Privately-owned property in the this country increased in value from £1,719 billion in 1999 to an estimated £3,755 billion in 2009, new data from Halifax shows. This is equivalent to around £33,000 per head of the UK population and equates to an increase of more than £2,000 billion. Property buyers up north will welcome the announcement that over the same period the value of housing stock in the north of England increased by 132% against 109% in the South. Despite this upward trend Halifax point out that

The Co-Operative Bank and Britannia points to the fact it has seen a 31 per cent increase in like-for-like mortgage applications in the first half of this year. The mortgage lender also reported a 13 per cent increase in the proportion of customers who have remortgaged since the start of 2010. The financier has introduced several new packages in recent months in a bid to attract buyers back into the housing market. These include a five-year capped tracker, allowing customers to take advantage of low interest rates and security against future rate rises. Neville Richardson, chief executive of The CoOperative Financial Services, said: “Throughout the credit crisis our strong financial position and responsible lending approach has attracted more and more customers to us and is an approach we will continue to build on, “Increasing numbers of people want to be with a business that they trust and in our case – a business they can have a say in.” Meanwhile, HSBC last week introduced two new mortgages to its range of home credit products. Also, earlier this year, the Post Office launched productes which required only a 10 per cent deposit. The news comes after research which says that the overall value of UK housing stock has more than doubled nationally over the last decade.

NEW APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME IS LAUNCHED Help for young across region getting into construction BALFOUR BEATTY, the infrastructure services business, has launched a new apprenticeship scheme which is set to benefit young people all over Merseyside, with job and training opportunities. Areas such as construction trades, ICT and facilities management all have openings for young people to take up apprenticeships within Balfour Beatty’s supply-chain companies. Details of the apprenticeships, which will be delivered in partnership with the North West Apprenticeship Company, were announced at an event in the Halewood Centre for the Learning last week. The lucky first two candidates to join the scheme were formally signed up at the event. Stephen Gilchrist, 17, from Kirkby and Ben Howarth, 16, from Hunts Cross will be undertaking a General Construction Operations Apprenticeship and training in bricklaying, respectively. Ronnie Round, leader of Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, has commented, “Through this innovative and far reaching programme, Balfour Beatty will transform the futures of a great many young people.
