MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Weather! Weather! Weather! Regardless were we went this summer, farmers, ranchers, everyone was talking about the weather. Too wet! Too dry! It?s been perfect! We are currently making plans to hold the National Simmental Show at the 2019 Royal Agricutltural Winter Fair. We welcome Jennie Ahern from Ireland who will be judging the Open Simmental Show. We encourage everyone to come and join us ?at the fair ?, exhibitor and/or observer. A good time is planned for all. Stay tune for further updates. I want to thank the OSA Board for their support in allowing me to attend the CSA ? Convention and National YCS Show held in Saint Hyacinthe, Quebec from August 7 ? 11, 2019. This was an opportunity for me to attend the Provincial President?s meeting with the CSA Board of Directors. This is definitely an opportunity to be taken advantage of, this allows candid conversation between all parties. We want to congratulate Shane Williams, on his election to the CSA Board as the Ontario Director for a 3-year term. It was the first time under
the CSA?s new constitutional change that a provincial director was elected through a mail in voting procedure. We thank Larry Barkley for being our CSA Director for the past three years. He will now have time to show that ?new? bred heifer he won through the Dutch Auction at the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Auction. The heifer was donated by Barlee Simmentals (Jerry Barber & Family) and raised $32,140 at the fundraising auction. The summer shows and fairs are well under way. I encourage our members to attend these events and enjoy the comraderie. As cattle producers we are resilient and encourage breeders to continue to market Simmental cattle. There is definitly a market, as confirmed by CSA and the increase in registrations. Again is 2019 we are holding the OSA Sweepstakes. Any bull or female purchased from an OSA member qualifies to receive 1 entry/animal into the sweepstakes, if transferred by December 31, 2019. OSA is offering 3 bull and 3 female draws at $500 each. Entries to be drawn at 2020 OSA-AGM.
We encourage our members to contact Whitney DeDecker if you need promotional material to distribute/ have available to display at local events i.e. plowing matches, cattle shows, cattle and stocker sales. She can also assist you with with your promotional and advertising needs. You can contact her at memberservices.osa@gmail.com or call/text at 1-519-500-8930.

On t ar io Sim m en t al Associat ion Recogn it ion of Ch am pion s Designed to recognize the top purebred or fullblood show female and male exhibited in the province of Ontario.
To be eligible animals must be registered with the Canadian Simmental Association and meet the standard set forth by them with regards to purebred/fullblood status. Award will be presented to one male and one female according to points accumulated regardless of age division. Animal must be legibly and properly tattooed as indicated on the animal?s registration paper at each of their qualifying shows. Animal must be owned by a member/members in good standing with the Ontario Simmental Association at the time of the show to be eligible.
The OSA with its membership have decided on Pet er bor ou gh Fair , Glen coe Fair , Ren f r ew Fair an d t h e Royal Win t er Fair that animals may attend to receive points. Exhibitors may attend multiple shows and points from all qualifying shows attended will be added for that animal. There is no limit to the number of qualifying shows an animal may attend and accumulate points from. This is done to encourage exhibitors to get out as much as possible to promote and showcase the Simmental breed.
* * Bulls and females exhibited at these shows will be recognized based on a calculated points system, determined by show placings from 1-10 in each class. Points differ based on the size of the show and with the number of cattle that are exhibited. Extra points will also be given to the Grand and Reserve
SOCIAL MEDIA & LIVESTOCK MARKETING By Whitney De Decker
With Todays Technology and the World Wide Web at our Fingertips. Learn how to use different social media platforms to grow your customer base. FACEBOOK Originally developed to allow social conntections via the internet, Facebook has transformed since its global release in 2006 from personal social media to more of a business direction. With Facebook, you have the ability to connect with people on a global scale in 3 different ways: Facebook Friends, Facebook Pages where you can create a business page and Marketplace. Friends and Pages are the most commonly used for Livestock businesses as Facebook has restricted live animal sales as of 2019. Utilize your personal page or your business page to post updates about your program. Many people use it to showcase their current genetics, advertise sales and general updates on their programs such as calving. The ability to have online albums for
interested parties to reference allows people to see a chronological timeline. It is easy to use and allows people to quickly post content and keep potential customers engaged and upto date. It has become an excellent tool for people with minimal web advertising experience or techonological savy to connect with others in the industry. Facebook also uses targeted marketing to suggest Friends or Pages that would be of interest to you allows you to further expand your network.
INSTAGRAM Instagram is an online photo album developed in 2010 allosing people to share pictures, trending stories and locations with friends and others on their platform. The utilize the # (hashtag) to target people with similar interests. You
can follow others pages and have followers for your own page. It is good for quick updates and having pictures for people to reference quickly. It allows for people to private message you for inquiries or comment on your picture uploads. It is best used to attract people by the photos you post. It is limiting in being able to post more detailed content but can grow a massive following of people interested in your content. W EBSITES Websites are the go to social media location for most Livestock Programs. It allows you to directt people by website link to your farm information. Websites allow for a professional detailed location for you to provide information as detailed or general as you see fit. Most commonly used websites for self created websites
are GoDaddy or Wix. Websites do cost money to host online and create depending on the complexity of the site. You can make your website interactive setting up mailing list for sales catalogs, online stores and tailoring each page to your invidual taste. Websites do require regular updating of the content and can be more time consuming. For people with limited internet experience, a website may be intimidating to start with. There is an option to hire someone to build your website, which can cost anywhere from $500 and up depending on how advanced you want it to be for your viewers. Websites are a great to have listed on your other social media spaces to direct them to your homepage.
YOUTUBE Youtube is a great tool to use to support your marketing of livestock. It is an online video platform that allows you to upload and share videos. Many breeders will use Youtube to store videos of sales animals and attach the links on their other sites to direct customers to so their offering can be viewed. You can upload videos from around your farm or whatever topic you decide is best suited to tell people more about your business and display your program. Youtube is more informative media as it not normally used to make direct contact with customers in way of conversation.
TW ITTER Twitter is considered a microblogging site which uses "Tweets" as messages to interact with others. It is restricted to 280 characters per post making it ideal for quick updates (i.e. show results, sale feature etc) Twitter is a new age news source with people following modern cultrual events from elections to celebrites. For those that do not have alot of time or are new to online social media, it may be too in depth to keep up with. It is another type of social media that compliments other online advertising avenues and is best used once you have built a customer base with brand recognition. Even if you do not utitlize Twitter for your program, it is worth a look to check out
whats happening in the great world of livestock as many large livestock companies, suppliers and ranches do use it on a global scale.
W HICH ONE IS BEST FOR ME? Everyone can benefit from the use of Social Media to promote their livestock program. Depending on your individual needs, one option or multiple social media platforms used simultaneously can increase your marketing abilities no matter how big or small of an operation. The internet makes it possible to have a global reach with investement. Wanting to market embryos to another country or get your live sale animals exposure beyond your local region? Accomplish just that and more. Internet advertising has become the next generation newspaper classifieds. We suggest starting with something basic like a Facebook account to grow your contacts and get comfortable with a simple social media outlet. Not sold on the idea? Give it 30 days of daily interaction and see how many contacts old and new you can expose your program to. There are many online tutorials on how to use each program. Just ask your friend Google search engine to help you along the way!
