President’s Message – Tina Hiddink As I write this message, we as Simmental breeders are calving the next generation of Simmentals genetics. It is always an exciting time on our farm when we get to see the result of our 2014 breeding program, also realizing the death of any calf will be a great loss in our pocket book. We have all heard, read and benefitted from the spike in cattle prices in 2014. The demand for Simmental genetics has never been higher and the forecasters are predicting another great year for cattle sales. Ontario Simmental hosted the 2014 National Simmental Show at the Royal Agricultural Fair last November. We again thank all the breeders for exhibiting their cattle with close to 150 head shown. I would also like to thank all the volunteers that made this event a success. There is continued interest in the Bright Lights Futurity that we plan on holding again in 2015. The OSA is always looking at ways for fundraising to continue our support of the Ontario YCS and Ontario 4-H Programs. If any one has ideas to continue these initiatives please let the OSA Board know. Last summer we were approached by the CSA to host the 2015 CSA Conference (AGM) and the National YCS Show. The OSA Board is currently planning with the CSA to host this event at the Lindsay Fairgrounds from July 30 to August 2, 2015. This will be a great event and ask that we keep those dates open to show the provincial delegates and CSA directors that their choice to hold the event in historic Ontario was the right choice. As an association we are planning an updated Ontario breeders directory that will be handed out to promote and encourage visitors to visit with you as breeders to promote your Simmental programs. Contact Josh Wooddisse, OSA Client Services Manager to include an ad in the breeders’ directory. Hope to see you all at our March 7, 2015 OSA – AGM being held at the Best Western in Peterborough on March 7, 2015 at 1:00pm. Tina Hiddink

Re: 2015 Canadian Simmental Association Convention – Sponsorship Opportunity

To whom it concerns:

The Ontario Simmental Association is pleased to be hosting the 2015 Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Annual Convention – a signature event in the Canadian beef industry, in Lindsay, Ontario from Thursday, July 30th to Sunday, August 2nd, 2015. We are pleased to invite you to join us in this exciting industry event by becoming a sponsor of the 2015 CSA Convention.

This four day event will focus on bringing together Simmental Breeders and Industry Partners from across Canada. The main objective of this weekend is to advance the Canadian Beef Industry through the programming of the CSA by sharing information on CSA programming and the development of new programs. An integral part of this event is through our Young Canadian Simmental Association program as they hold their 2015 National YCSA Classic.

Sponsorship of this event is being offered through several options which allow everyone the opportunity to be part of the event. We feel that your organization would be an appropriate fit as a program sponsor and we are confident that your participation will offer maximum exposure for your company or organization. Please see the attached complete document to review the opportunities that are being offered.

A representative from the Ontario Simmental Association sponsorship committee will be contacting you to further discuss this opportunity and the benefits you will gain from exposure at this National event. Thank you for your consideration and we look forward to your participation in this premiere event.

Sincerely,

Spring Pasture Management Tips Jack Kyle, Grazier Specialist, OMAFRA There are a number of things that you can put in place now to give improved pasture yields throughout the coming season. Start by frost seeding legumes into your grass pastures during March or early April. Legumes provide high quality forage for your livestock and also provide a bonus in extra nitrogen that the grass plants will use for optimum growth. For maximum production there should be 40-50% legume in a pasture. Broadcasting several pounds of seed in late February to early April, depending on snow depth and frost is one way of increasing the legume content of a pasture. The clovers (white and red) and trefoil are the preferred legumes to use for frost seeding. Although alfalfa makes an excellent pasture legume it does not establish very well in a frost seeding system. The grass species generally do not give satisfactory results in a frost seeding situation.

Plan a rotational grazing system that allows the livestock to be moved from a pasture before the forage is too short. A residual pasture height of 3-4 inches is ideal. This leaves enough grass for rapid re-growth. Keep in mind that the root system tends to be about the same size as the above ground plant. If you take the grass down very short there will be a decrease in the size of the root system that will support re-growth.

A soil test should be done every 3-5 years on pasture fields and additional phosphorous and potassium added if required. The phosphorous and potassium levels should be in the medium range, if they are low there will not be enough soil nutrition to support optimum plant growth. A soil test will also indicate the soil pH, if it is low then apply lime as recommended by the soil test. The other fertility component is nitrogen. If there is less that 35-40% legume in the pasture there will be a response to additional nitrogen. Nitrogen should be applied at about 40-50 pounds of actual N per acre to get the best response. Additional N at this rate will increase plant growth for about 6 weeks after application.

Put livestock into a pasture before the grass is too tall. Ideally the grass should be 10-14 inches tall when the cattle are moved in. This will give the optimum length of forage for cattle to physically eat while maintaining a balance of yield and quality. For the first rotation through your pastures in the spring it will be necessary to start before the grass has reached this height. Then rotate quickly from pasture to pasture to keep up with the rapid growth. Subsequent rotations however should follow the above guidelines

OSA Advocate

8

Plants start to re-grow about 5 days after being harvested. Livestock will prefer the new growth and will eat it as it appears which will greatly increase the recovery time before the next grazing. For maximum forage utilization livestock should be moved every 1-2 days, but as a maximum every 5 days.

Train your livestock to electric fence. If livestock respect an electric fence they will be much easier to manage and pastures can be sized to the animal needs with single wire temporary fence. An effective electric fence should give the animal a “memorable experience” so they know not to touch it again. A good energizer that is properly grounded, sized to the length of fence that needs to be charged and with all connections making good contact should provide this “experience”.

Expect a shortage of feed in mid to late summer and then plan how you are going to fill this shortage. Do you have second/third cut hay fields that can be grazed? Should you plant some annual forage such as sorghum-sudan, late seeded cereals, turnips, or grazing corn? Is there a supply of other forage such as sweet corn waste available in your area at an effective price? Should you make hay/baleage with some of the excess early pasture growth? The things that will work on your farm will be different than the next person’s, whether they live down the road or across the province. Each farm needs to look at what will work for their situation.

Keep a pasture log this season where you can record the dates that animals entered and left each paddock, how many animals were involved and an estimate of the amount of forage present in the field. Also note any weather conditions. Starting the grazing season with a plan will allow you to make the necessary management decisions and adjustments during the grazing season to realize the optimum potential of your pastures.

Grand Champion Heifer National Junior Beef Heifer Show 2014

Shown by Kennidi Howe of Middlesex County The National Junior Beef Heifer Show held at the Royal Winter Fair is the largest all breed Junior Beef show in Canada. Every year 4-H members from across Canada come to Toronto. This year’s Grand Champion Simmental Heifer, Duncs Kisses 1A, shown by Kennidi Howe of Middlesex County, went on to claim the National Grand Champion Heifer title. Kennidi has been in 4H for the past 3 years and has had the opportunity to show Duncs Kisses 1A as a calf as well as a yearling heifer. In a phone interview, Kennidi says she picked out her heifer since “she was structurally correct, calm and came over to see her in the barn”. Kennidi plans to pick another great Simmental heifer for the upcoming year. The Ontario Simmentals Association congratulates Kennidi on her big win and we wish her the best of luck for next year.
