mothers2mothers (m2m) is an Africa-based NGO that unlocks the potential of women to eliminate paediatric AIDS and create healthy families across eight sub-Saharan countries. m2m trains, employs, and helps empower HIV-positive women to work as community healthcare workers in understaffed health centres and underserved communities. Through a peer-to-peer approach, these ‘Mentor Mothers’ deliver a range of health services, advice, and support to women and their families. Started in Cape Town, South Africa in 2001 with an initial focus on preventing mother-tochild transmission of HIV, m2m has innovated and built on its strengths and now provides family-centred support for a range of related health and social issues spanning pregnancy, birth, childhood, and adolescence. It also partners with governments and other NGOs on the adoption of its programme to spread the Mentor Mother Model and its benefits. m2m has a track record of scaling its services and proven impact. In 2017, m2m and its partners enrolled 2.3 million new clients. m2m has virtually eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV among the enrolled clients it serves directly for the last four years, with an average transmission rate of just 1.6%, while 97% of children in its ECD programmes meet all of their development milestones at 12 months. Fire destroys more homes in Khayelitsha UNATHI OBOSE

T

hsepethsepe informal settlement residents in Khayelitsha are facing a bleak Christmas after their shacks were ravaged by fire on Tuesday. About 30 shacks burned down and about 130 people, including children, were left homeless. The fire is the second in Khayelitsha in about a month. About 1 300 people were left homeless in SST when an inferno destroyed about 300 shacks last month.

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of Tuesday’s fire was unknown. Fire victim Fikiswa Mooi (29) said she only managed to escape with her hand bag and some important documents. “I was at a nearby spaza shop when I saw the smoke. Initially, I thought there is someone burning rubbish. It was when I heard someone screaming ‘fire, fire’ that I realised it was something more serious. And the flames were already big,” she said. Mooi, who is staying with her bigger sis-

ter said all other belongings burned in the fire. “All the stuff including bed, fridge, cupboard and some clothes caught fire because I was unable to take them out. “I don’t know what to do and I am concerned what is my sister going to say because all her stuff burned up,” said the mother of two children.

He found the courage to speak out about his bully.

Help comes in handy for fire victims UNATHI OBOSE

C

hristmas came early for the SST fire victims in Town Two when they received food parcels fom the South Africa Soong Ching Ling Foundation on Thurdsday last week, at Kilambo Hall in Makhaya. Some of the donations included sugar, flour, teabags, rice, mealie-meal, canned fish, cooking oil and many other things. The donations came in handy as the victims of last month’s fire still grapple to put their lives together. More than 300 shacks were destroyed and a man was killed when a fire broke out in Town Two last month, leaving more than 1000 people homeless. Since then, help has been pouring in, and the donation is the latest in a series of interventions. The foundation is working with various communities in the province by promoting international relations and safeguarding world peace. And there was no better time for some of the victims to get the donations. “The groceries that I received will make a huge difference. I won’t buy everything for Christmas, instead I’ll just add a few things. I’m so relieved. “Now I only need to make sure that I settle

the lay buy for my children’s clothes,” said Bulelwa Nonkwitshi. She urged the government to build them proper houses. “We need houses. Every year we suffer the same fate. Our lives are in danger. We don’t know when are we going to die,” she said. ANC member of parliament Leonard Ramatlakane, who accompanied members of the foundation, praised the foundation for assisting the victims. “They are here to fulfill their promise by assisting the fire victims,” he said, adding that as the party they had asked the foundation to help. “They (foundation) arrived at the right time. As we all know Christmas is time for gifts, reunion and love.” Foundation chairperson Chen Qing said they strived to promote friendship between South Africans and Chinese people. “After we heard about the fire we decided to collect food and donate it to the victims. We’ve been working with the Khayelitsha community for a long time, donating food and other things,” she said. She added that they have in the past donated food to Baphumelele Children’s Home in Site B. Ward 96 councillor Thando Pimpi thanked the foundation for the support. See page 11

Cries to end child abuse UNATHI OBOSE

A

s part of the 16 Days of Activism for no violence against Women and Children campaign, parents and young children from Mfuleni took to the streets on Monday to encourage young children to speak out against any form of abuse. The march was organised by Afrika Tikkun as part of its Memeza Bazokuzwa awareness campaign. The campaign is designed to motivate children to speak out, and it came a day after the launch of the 16 Days campaign. Campaign co-ordinator Makhoaphe Letsie described the march as an annual event. She said their aim is to raise awareness in the community to stop child abuse. “We want the community to stop abusing children, listen to them, take them serious and believe them,” said Letsie. Letsie said many children’s were violated through corporal punishment at school and at home. She added that they were also abused sexually. “We want them to break the silence. If

they experience anything which is bad or they feel uncomfortable they must report it to their parents or educators,” she emphasised. Letsie urged children to stop bullying each other. She they also fighting for the rights of children living with disability that they also need to be respected too. Zisekho Nkoyana (19) said they want their voices to be heard by the community. She urged parents to listen to their concerns instead of sidelining them. “Afrika Tikkun has taught me on how to express myself and how to resolve problems without violence. And also to work as team,” she said. Parent Nodadithi Xegwana also urged other parents to listen and protect their children. “Gone are those days when a parents have to compel their views to the children regardless of how the children feel. We need to sit down with our children and talk instead of using corporal punishment,” she said.

Residents demand safety UNATHI OBOSE

A

Petros Mente complaining about crime to Dan Plato.

ngry Site B residents vented their frustration around crime in area when mayor Dan Plato visited the neighbourhood. The visit took place on Thursday. Plato was in the area to listen to some of the resident’s concerns and to seek ways to help. The meeting was at Usasazo High School. Irate residents lashed out at police for alleged “poor” police visibility and escalating crime in the area. Fuming resident Petros Mente said crime in the area had spiralled out of con-

trol and police were nowhere to be found. He said as senior citizens they felt unsafe. “Criminals are terrorizing our communities. And even if they (criminals) are arrested today they are released the following day,” said Mente. He urged Plato to pay special attention to the Cape Flats, where crime and gangsterism is prevalent. Plato vowed to address all residents’ concerns. However, he stated that he needed some time to adjust into his new role and to acclimatise to the new environment. Plato described crime is a major concern to everyone.

WHEEL TECH

He promised to organise a “special meeting” with police and the Metro Police officials to look at strategies to curb crime in the area. “I will depend on the local councillor for a follow-up meeting. If he says I must come in December or January I’ll come. I’m ready any time,” said Plato. Ward councillor Thando Mpengesi said as the community they lived in fear because of the escalating of crime in their neighbourhood. He said they wanted Plato to intervene and resolve their problems. He highlighted robberies, murders and car hijacking as the most occurring in the area.

Proteas local star ploughs back SIYABONGA KALIPA

P

humza Maweni, a South African Netball national team player from Khayelitsha, is the latest in a series of people to bail out the SST fire victims. The Proteas goalkeeper recently donated school uniform to a group of Chuma Primary School learners who lost everything during the fire. Maweni bought school shirts, trousers and skirts for 63 learners. Maweni said when the fire broke out she was around, and had decided to contribute something. “I sat down with my family and we decided that I should donate school uniforms because education is very important,” she said. She said she wanted to encourage children from her area to take education serious to improve their future prospects. Maweni praised the community for supporting her when she started her netball career. “I got a lot of encouragement from this community. “I would even knock at people’s doors asking for money so that I can go and play for the province,” she said. Vuyane Ngqaqa, a father of a Grade R learner Indivile (6), said he is happy with the donation. Ngqaqa said most of the learners did not know where to get uniforms following the fire. Another parent, Sikelelwa Pakade, mother of another Grade R learner Chumisa (6), praised Maweni. Pakade said she now does not have to worry about her child’s school uniform anymore. “I feel like a load has been lifted off my shoulders. I would not sleep easy at night because I was always worried about her uniform,” she said.

Keen to make a difference while building your professional network?

Become a YeBo volunteer! We need matriculants or recent graduates to join the YearBeyond programme and help tutor junior and high school learners at low resourced schools. While giving back volunteers will: • Gain practical work experience; • Strengthen their leadership skills; • Build their professional networks; and • Further their career prospects as a result. Open to matriculants and graduates aged 1825.

“YeBo is one of the few programmes that allows you to see how you’re working towards building a better community, and a better South Africa. You don’t see it as volunteering. You see it as a duty; a duty of changing others.” Former YeBo volunteer Thando, from Kuils River, now Director at Liysahka SA and studying at the Cornerstone Institute.

NO MORE WORRIES

I am here to solve your problems My name is Michell. I am 52 years, I live in Vredenberg. The reason I wrote this message is to make sure that you also get it. I know you are the way I was. My life was a mess. I worked for 22 years with no money and my husband left me. I had a big court case and had lot of debts but a few weeks I read in a newspaper and I saw a man God PASTOR BADWELL prayed and also gave me Holly Oil and black stone. I paid off my debt and my husband came back. My financial problems were solved, my court case was scratched. I am succesful in love again. I live a happy life now. Thanks PASTOR BADWELL for bringing joy in my life. Stop suffering! Pastor has helped a lot of people all over the world. You can change your life today.

H4H Nompunyezo Siyoyo under 14 basketball tournament held coaching clinics.

non governmental organisation Hoops 4 Hope (H4H) held its annual Basketball tournament on Saturday 25 November at the University of Cape Town. H4H uses basketball as a way of training and empowering children to work in their own communities. The tournament is held in memory of former H4H coach Nompunyezo Siyoyo. The event is called H4H Nompunyezo Siyoyo u.14 basketball tournament. A day before the tournament, the National Basketball Association Africa team held a basketball coaching clinic with the participants. There were also some educational activities related to leadership skills, communication and how to deal with health issues. The tournament was for under 14 boys and girls basketball teams. A girls team made up of players from Crossroads, Nyanga and Philippi called CNP Thunder won the girls final while Vikings from Montana took home the boys trophy. The Thunder beat the Western Province Chinese team 21-14 to claim the

cup. Thunder coach Thabo Marotola said even though they had only two weeks to prepare for the tournament they were favourites to win. He said they know the teams they played against from the Cape Town Basketball Association, which is the league they play in. “We always play the same teams we faced and beat them. So we came to the tournament as the favourites,” he said. Marotola said by winning the cup he hopes that the parents of his players will take them serious and support them in everything that they do.
