TOP TRAINING TIPS
Get r o f r e t t fi er m m u s
FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO SHAPE UP THIS SUMMER, A KEY TIP TO REMEMBER IS THAT GETTING RESULTS IS 70 PER CENT DOWN TO WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR MOUTH AND 30 PER CENT RELATED TO THE EXERCISE ROUTINE YOU TAKE UP
With this in mind, we’ve asked some of the best personal trainers at David Lloyd Leisure to share their top summer fitness tips to get your physique ready for the beach:
LITTLE AND OFTEN Consuming small meals and snacks every two to three hours throughout the day will rev up your metabolism and enable your body to burn an extra 350 calories per day. The total amount of calories can be the same, but spreading them out speeds up the metabolism.
INCREASE PROTEIN Eat a balanced diet – with around 40% of your calories in the form of good carbohydrates, 30% quality protein and 30% essential fats. Most of us are taking as much as 75% of our calories from starchy carbs (including bread, pasta, rice and potatoes) and consuming very few calories in the form of protein, which causes blood sugar levels to rise. Aim to eat more fish, chicken, meat and free range eggs.
BIG MUSCLE GROUPS Training your body’s big muscle groups is key to getting the beach body you desire as these burn the most calories during any exercise session. Good choices are squats and lunges for legs, cable flies and TRX chest presses for the chest, and wide-grip, pull-ups and seated rowing for the back.
HYDRATION IS KEY It’s simple: you need to drink around two litres of water a day. If water is absent, food is not transported and stored as fat. Dehydration can cause endurance levels to flag, as well as tiredness, headaches and dizziness, especially when it’s warm.
MEN AND ARMS For men who are looking for either bigger guns or just more definition, it’s important to know that your tricep muscle covers roughly one third of your arm and so it is vital to train it a little more. Picking exercises such as a tricep pull-down alongside a tricep kick-back is a great combination to work this area.
MEALS: boost your results with our expert food advice Pre-Workout: this could be the second most important meal of the day (after breakfast). What you choose
depends on the intensity of the exercise session. If it’s low, consuming a meal before a session will make you feel slow and sluggish. For moderate to high, that extra bit of fuel will be vital to get the best out of your workout. These simple guidelines should help you: 3HRS BEFORE
A small meal with a combination of protein and good carbohydrates
2HRS BEFORE A protein bar or shake
A small snack eg. a handful of almonds and a banana
Post-Workout: there is a key 20-minute window after an exercise routine comprising cardio and resistance
during which your blood vessels are enlarged and ready for the uptake of key nutrients. Exercise depletes critical amino acids such as glutamine and your body must restock these stores straight away with protein – chicken, fish, eggs, whey protein and soy protein are perfect choices. When exercising, your body will also use glycogen, stored in the liver. Oatmeal, brown rice, grains such as quinoa, and all vegetables and fruit are great for replenishing this.

BLUEBIRD A legend in time
The numbers change and records fall, but blue remains the true colour of speed 301.337mph. Speed records will always be raised, but time doesn’t diminish the record holders of the past. Sir Malcolm Campbell’s final land speed record achievement was set in his beautiful Bluebird at Bonneville Salt Flats in 1935 and, while that speed has been surpassed many times, the legend has not. The endurance of the Bluebird legend, courageously and proudly advanced by the great man’s family, is also about style as well as speed. The Bluebird machines combined technology and design in an extraordinary way whereby function inevitably took precedence — and yet delivered not only the fastest cars of their time but also some of the most beautiful machines on Earth. British luxury watchmaker Christopher Ward, official time partner to Bluebird Speed Records, has echoed elements of that style in a special tribute watch, the C7 Bluebird. This special Limited Edition (1,912) quartz chronograph marks the year that Malcolm Campbell set the first of his many speed records. Looking at the C7 Bluebird, the colourassociation is obvious but the design elements also include a dial based on
Bluebird’s speedometer and an elegant backplate that carries a tactile design of five concentric circles that echo Bluebird’s unmistakable wheel-hubs. Between the blue face and that backplate is a Ronda 3540.D Swiss caliber movement; like Bluebird, the beating technological heart of this machine is hidden from view but performs to perfection. This week, just as the Rolling Stones towered over Glastonbury, the Bluebird name will dominate the Goodwood Festival of Speed with the display of Bluebird V and Bluebird CN7. Christopher Ward will be there to present Sir Malcolm’s family with the Bluebird C7 Limited
Christopher Ward watches are available online at christopherward.co.uk and at the company's showroom, by appointment, on 01628 763040

ITUNES BLACKBERRY SMARTPHONE CALL OF DUTY
GOOGLE MAPS YOUTUBE GUITAR HERO
A recent surge in patent applications in the UK, USA and China, the biggest jump in 10 years, heralds the start of a new era of invention. So, where have we been and where are we going? The music world hasn't been the same since Apple launched its online music store for iPods and Mac computers 10 years ago. A quick catch-up with friends now involves at least a cursory level of grooming thanks to Skype. And to a generation, the Blackberry is a fruit named after a phone rather than the other way around. Technology and the way we use it has changed and continues to change our lives. When the first mobile phones were hauled around by beings called yuppies, they inspired both envy and scorn. Let’s face it,
they were hardly the stuff of Captain Kirk and crew. Until, of course, they were and now few of us could function without them. Tech years, like dog years, go by in the blink of an eye. The games we played then, the apps, the interfaces, are now like comfyslippered old men, loved and cherished of course, but the future is no country for them. Here we take a look back at 10 amazing years of ideas and innovation and forward to what’s on the horizon. Beam me up Scotty.
