Flower Plants to Brighten Up Your Garden
Flower plants are a wonderful way to brighten up your garden. They are easy to grow and are beautiful when you see them blooming.
Some of the most popular flower plants are lavender, foxglove, and water lily. These are just a few of the many flower plants you can plant in your garden.
Water lily
The water lily is a flowering plant that grows in ponds, rivers, lakes, and seas. These beautiful aquatic plants have been immortalized in art. In ancient times, the lotus was considered to represent the beauty of nature. Today, the water lily provides an aquatic habitat for fish, waterfowl, and other aquatic creatures.
Water lilies are members of the order Nymphaeales. They are native to temperate and tropical regions of the world. Many varieties of water lilies have been developed for ornamental use.
Water lilies are easy to grow. You can start them in a pot or in a fabric planting bag. Their leaves are distinctive. Each has a narrow cut near the stem.
Astilbe
Astilbe flower plants add a splash of color to any shady garden. They are perfect as a ground cover or for edging, planting, or as part of a border.
Many varieties of astilbe bloom for a long time, providing yearround interest to your garden. Depending on the variety, the flowers range in size from 6 inches to two feet. Some species bloom from mid-spring to late summer.
Astilbes are great in woodland gardens, or beside a pond, stream, or waterfall. They also blend well with other native plants, and look attractive in mass in a shade garden. The foliage is especially eyecatching in bright colors.
Eschscholzia
Eschscholzia is a genus of twelve or so annual plants. The genus is named after Baltic German botanist Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz. Aside from being an excellent flowering plant, it also happens to be a good food source.
One of the most popular varieties is the California poppy, a cactuslike scavenger found in the west, from Washington to Sonora. This perennial is a great choice for the garden as it grows well in poor soils and has a long bloom time. In milder climates, it can be grown as an annual. It is an easy-to-grow plant and will require a bit of watering, but not too much.
Dianthus
Dianthus is a plant that is not only easy to grow, but is also extremely beautiful. It grows well in containers and can be planted in beds or borders. These plants require regular watering and fertilizing. They are also susceptible to pests, such as aphids and slugs.
The plant’s flowers have a spicy sweet scent that is particularly appealing to butterflies and hummingbirds. Dianthus is a perennial, so it will bloom again in the spring and again in the fall.
You can plant dianthus directly in the garden or you can propagate dianthus from seed. This plant can be found in shades of green, silver, and blue. Regardless of the color of the foliage, the flowers are a beautiful addition to the garden.
Lobelia
The Lobelia flower plant is a prolific bloomer. This small but elegant plant can be grown in a container or in a garden. It can also be used as an edging or accent plant.
As a perennial, the lobelia does not have to be replanted each year. However, it will need some extra help in the winter.
For optimal growth, the lobelia plant should be in a location with rich, well-drained soil. It also needs to be watered regularly. If the
plant gets dry, it can suffer from stunted growth and root rot.
Lavender
Lavender flower plants represent grace, serenity and purity. The flowers contain the highest concentration of oil glands. Their aroma is also beneficial for mood and relieves stress. They can be used in soups, salads and stews.
Lavender can grow in a variety of climates. It thrives in moist, dry or Mediterranean climates. When growing lavender, choose a site that gets at least six hours of sunlight a day.
Planting lavender should take place after the threat of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 60 degrees F. The lavender plant should be surrounded by good drainage. If the plant is too water-stressed, it could develop a root rot.
Foxglove
The Foxglove is a flower plant that grows from seeds. Foxgloves are herbaceous perennials that grow well in full sun, but they are also quite partial to light shade. They are native to temperate regions.
During its first year, a foxglove begins as a small basal rosette. It’s stalk rises and produces pendulous bell-shaped flowers that range from purple to white. In some varieties, the bell-shaped flowers may be yellow.
Common foxgloves are sold as second-year potted nursery plants.
However, some hybrids are bred to produce blooms in the first year.
