Colesberg — A Historical Frontier Town With Contemporary Twists Travellers on the N1 between Johannesburg and Cape Town often stop over for the night in the historical Northern Cape town of Colesberg. Their sojourns are normally all too brief. Colesberg, set snugly in a ring of little hills, has a lot more than an overnight bed to offer.

Take the newly-established Colesberg Walking Tour, for instance.

Pop in at the local Tourist Info offices in Murray Street and someone there will organise you a guide for a fascinating threehour tour through Colesberg.

The area has seen waves of settlement over the past few millennia. First, the Stone Age folk roamed these hills, hunting the antelope that moved through the surrounding prairies. Then came the trekboers (nomadic farmer) who, with their livestock herds, were in constant search of new pastures. They were followed by the missionaries, who set up a number of stations and converted the local /Xam San to their congregation.

Finally, the settlers arrived and established some kind of formal government — and a settlement called Colesberg in 1830.

The first few decades of Colesberg resembled the first

few decades of Tombstone, Arizona, USA. They were both gunfighters’ towns, unruly places full of wandering hunters, adventurers, thieves and cutthroats mostly moving northwards in search of greener pastures. Gunpowder and liquor were the coin of the day until law and order were established.

The slow rhythms of Colesberg were disturbed at the turn of the 19th Century by the South African (Anglo-Boer) War. Battles between Briton and Boer were fought all over the koppies surrounding the town.

Your historical walk around Colesberg will include visits to the Colesberg-Kemper Museum, various churches, the stone Magistrates courthouse, various Karoo-style houses, some old shops in the main street and, possibly, lunch at a former horse mill which currently does duty as a bar and restaurant. Visit the various cemeteries, ask your guide about a tour of the local township or, if you’re feeling particularly active, unstrap those mountain bikes from your vehicle and take on one of the listed Colesberg mountain bike trails.

A Karoo guest farm with a difference is Poplar Grove, just outside Colesberg. It’s a Zen Buddhist retreat, offering a number of guest cottages and a Zendo for meditation. Poplar Grove also offers various out-ofretreat options for overnight travellers or longer-stay visitors who just want to savour an escape into the wide-open spaces and daily routine of farm life.

About 30km east of Colesberg is the ground-breaking Hantam

Community Education Trust farm school, with a capacity of 200 young learners who are mostly the children of Karoo farmworkers.

Started more than 30 years ago by a group of concerned farmer’s wives, the Hantam Trust also offers a social outreach programme, a weekly clinic, a Tourism School and a Handyman School (both in Colesberg town). More than 90% of graduates from the school are employed in stable jobs, in a country where the estimated youth unemployment rate is 64%.

Teacher Assaulted By Learner Can Sue Education Department A court ruling has paved the way for a teacher to sue the Mpumalanga Department of Education for R8-million for loss of earnings and damages after he was attacked in his classroom by a learner.

The incident occurred at Bergvlam High School in Mbombela in March 2018.

Richard Prinsloo had been teaching for 25 years. He suffered fractured ribs and injuries to his head and his eyes. He resigned, citing post traumatic stress disorder.

A video of the incident was aired on a local television news channel, showing the grade-10 learner repeatedly punching Prinsloo before being restrained by fellow learners. The incident was said to have been sparked by remarks Prinsloo made to the learner regarding his mother who had recently died in a car accident.

While Prinsloo laid a charge against the learner, this was later withdrawn by a magistrate who directed that the learner continue seeing a psychologist and attend a National Institute for Crime Prevention and the

Reintegration of Offenders (NICRO) anger management programme.

Prinsloo said the department had a duty to protect him and to give him support after the attack.

The department raised preliminary objections saying the case should not proceed because it had little prospect of success and Prinsloo had not timeously issued a notice required in law that a party intends to sue an organ of state.

The department also took the view that Prinsloo should claim under the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) because the injuries arose “out of and in the scope” of his employment.

The act, the department said, precluded him from suing the department. But Mbombela High Court Judge Takalani Ratshibvumo ruled against the department. Regarding the late filing of the notice, the judge said Prinsloo had explained that he was not aware of this legal provision at the time, had to raise funds to instruct attorneys to lodge his claim, and was preoccupied with a disciplinary

Regarding the Compensation Act, the judge said Prinsloo was not a “boxing coach”. “The motive of the learner in attacking him is irrelevant … The question rightly to be asked is whether the act causing the injury was a risk incidental to his employment.

I am unable to see how an assault on a teacher on duty at school arises out of his employment … I cannot conceive of the risk of assault being incidental to teaching.”

Judge Ratshibvumo referred to another case in which a court had awarded damages in excess of R1.1-million to a teacher who was bludgeoned with a hammer by a learner in full view of others in the classroom, noting that Prinsloo had good prospects of success in his claim. He ordered the department to pay Prinsloo’s legal costs for the application.

The main matter will now be set down for hearing.

In the audio recording, David is heard claiming that the figure was much lower because they only stole a portion of the cash hidden in the sofa at the farm.

He tells the unidentified men that the robbers only took about $800,000 (about R13-million) packaged in eight wrapped parcels containing $100,000 each.

The money was shared between four people including the cleaner, who received $200,000. David admits to taking $300,000 (nearly R5-million).

He also gives details about how he crossed into Namibia, saying he left because he sensed that “this thing is too hot”. David claims he was arrested because someone who did not get paid from the stolen cash snitched on him.

From the description in the recording, it appears that police raided a Milnerton property where David and other suspects were staying in 2020 after the robbery.

David describes the raid, saying police beat the suspects and even took out the “whole ceiling of the house” looking for the money, but the suspects told the police that it had been spent. He claims that they were dumped “in the bush” after the raid.

Interestingly, the recording includes the claim that David’s father worked for the state and was somehow connected to the Namibian vice-president.

The content of the recording suggests the fallout from Fraser’s disclosure could potentially be embarrassing for the Namibian political leadership, not just for Continues from pg 15

The band travelled around SA in search of potential groups to groom for international status, and to fulfil the dream of the band's founder. The development programme, according to member Sibongiseni Shabalala, was one of the late Joseph Shabalala’s many wishes: he wanted to open doors for other local groups to navigate the international arena just like they have done for 58 years now.

“My father’s dream, when he founded Mambazo, was to develop people and also take traditional music and South African culture abroad, the music that we are singing. That first part has been realised, as the group has won three Grammy awards, while showcasing South Africa's tradition internationally. “My father's other dream was to develop musicians through a music school and that is what we are doing now through the Ladysmith Black Mambazo Mobile Academy programme. We have selected nine groups that we are busy recording and developing to be the next best international acts that can also win Grammys,” said Shabalala.

The groups were discovered during Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s national competition tour in 2018.

Daar is ook soveel redes wat ons nie weet, hoekom mense dit doen nie. Die navorsing sê een van die redes is depressie. Medies sê dis 'n wanbalans in die brein. Dis wanneer die serotonien vlakke in die brein baie laag is. Dan ervaar jy daardie moedelose gevoel. Wat 'n donker en alleen plek om te wees? South Africa Wins Two International Archery Events In Virtual Tournament The two-day 2022 African Archery Federation Tournament that caused a buzz of excitement at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley this weekend wrapped up on a high note on Sunday.

Family and friends had spent the weekend supporting their own personal favourite archers in a discipline that takes a tremendous amount of skill and discipline.

National teams of African Genesis Archery (AGA) faced-off against opponents in the international virtual event. Teams doing battle were South Africa,

Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, who each hosted their own event in a city in their own country. The live event was then broadcast so that teams were actually competing virtually against the other countries in real time.

arrows were shot at six, 3D moulded, life-size animals with points being awarded accordingly. Individual archers and teams with the highest overall scores were then announced as winners of the tournament.

Archers competed in a Bull’s Eye as well as a 3D competition.

In the Bull’s Eye competition, archers were given 15 arrows to shoot at an 80cm fita target (stationary circular targets) at a 10m distance and then 15 arrows at a 15m distance to get a score out of 300.

After the two-day event was completed, South Africa won two of the International events.

Speaking exclusively to Driving.co.uk at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Wing Commander Stuart Edmondson, who was head of engineering operations before being “handed the keys” to the project at the start of the year, said Bloodhound is ready and waiting for a new land speed record attempt with a one-time investment.

“We don’t need a billionaire, we just need a wealthy investor” he said. “£10 million — that is the figure that people need to focus on. You can have 11 million in the bank, then you can afford it.”

The car, which currently resides at Coventry Transport Museum, is still available for use, and the EJ200 jet engine, Nammo rocket and pilot Andy Green, who holds the current world land speed record, are all also ready to go, once investment is found, according to Edmondson (pictured below at Goodwood).

“We came away from that knowing comfortably that we can break the land speed record. We didn’t go there to go and explore 1,000 miles per hour. “As an engineer, I think the challenge is awesome,” he said.

“But I’ve also realised we’ve got to distance ourselves from the image we have, quite rightly, that burning fossil fuels is not appropriate to the era we live in.

“So I’m doing it for three reasons: it’s the right thing to do, the engineering challenge, but also to increase the attractiveness of any investor.

We have had investors turn away and go, ‘I can’t be associated with that. I’ve got lots of money, but that’s not green’.”

“In theory the car is designed for 1,000mph,” he said. “The reality is we need to, as Bloodhound has always done, do everything incrementally.”

Edmondson was keen to clarify that Bloodhound wouldn’t be using biofuels to power the jet engine, which come with their own environmental issues such as deforestation and mass crop farming, but synthetic e-fuels, such as those being developed by the likes of Porsche, using renewable processes to create a hydrogen and methanol-based liquid fuel. The process is potentially completely carbon neutral.

“This is where I think the planet should go to solve the aviation industries problem, which is aviation industry cannot replace the jet engines they have in the next 10, 20, 30, 40 years,” said Edmondson. “Your Airbus 330 is not going to be powered by a different type of engine. The only way you’re going meet your green deadlines is to provide fuel that is net zero.”

“STEM is my biggie,” said Edmondson. “Pushing the science, technology and maths comes back to the idea that engineers have got to fix the green problems of today. People can say we’re going to go green, but who’s going to do it?

In a post to the Bloodhound website, Edmondson said: “Utilising green fuels strengthens our ability to inspire the next generation of Engineers and create a lasting legacy, as the world pushes engineering boundaries in a sustainable way.”

Surgery Happening After 3 Yrs Of Fundraising Although they miss home, all their loved ones – and South African food – Resegofetse Molale from Kuruman is grateful that she and her son, Phetogo (5), can be in America for his lifechanging surgery.

Phetogo was born with a rare orthopedic condition called congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia (CPT). This condition is a break in the bone that fails to heal. As he grows, his fibula is being pushed out by his broken tibia, almost cutting through his skin which is very painful. While South African surgeons suggested amputation as the best option for this condition, Molale learnt after intensive research about the Paley Orthopedic and Spine Institute in Florida where Dr Dror Paley has been treating children with this condition for over 28 years. He has been able to achieve a 100% success rate.

This type of surgery is usually performed when children are a year old, and Phetogo was almost two when Molale consulted Paley. Time was running out as the deformity worsens with age. After thorough communication with the

New E.U. Rules Squeeze Orange River Citrus Farms Citrus in South Africa is grown across the country mainly in the Limpopo, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu- Natal, Northern Cape, and North West provinces THE clearance of hundreds of containers of southern African oranges that are already being shipped is uncertain due to “unjustified, scientifically flawed, unnecessary and disproportionate” EU regulatory measures, the Citrus Growers Association (CGA) warned on Friday.

CGA chief executive Justin Chadwick said in his weekly newsletter that the EU Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG Sante) expected South Africa to have implemented these measures on the False Codling Moth (FCM) risk management system before the South African National Plant Protection Organisation, under the Department Agriculture Land Reform and Rural Development (Dalrrd), had even received official notice of the new measures.

“We are unsure if southern Africa should have known due to the Minister of Agriculture in Spain tweeting about his

political victory (he was tweeting even before the votes had been counted); or whether Dalrrd is meant to have a crystal ball that allows them to know DG Sante’s changed measures before they publish them,” Chadwick said.

“Surely this is no way to treat a trading partner of over 100 years, and surely this is not how the International Plant Protection Convention dictates that new measures are informed and implemented. This is not a risk that requires emergency measures – indeed if it was, one would expect stronger measures against those with significantly greater interceptions over the past three years.
