Sault Ste. Marie

Sault Ste. Marie is one of the oldest settlements in North America. For hundreds of years, people have lived beside the rapids of the St. Mary’s River, such as Jesuit Missionaries, explorers, voyageurs, artists, soldiers, and traders. The rapids provided an ideal environment for fish gathering, and for centuries communities of Ojibwa lived close to the river, their livelihood based on whitefish. Sault Ste. Marie (also known as “the Sault” or “the Soo”) is a city located on the St. Mary’s River in Ontario, Canada. It is the third largest city in Northern Ontario, with a population of approximately 75,000; residents of the city are called Saultites. “Sault” means “rapids” in French, and thus the entire name translates to “Saint Mary’s Rapids.” Although the word “Sault” is pronounced like “so” in French, anglophone residents pronounce it as “soo.” With a mission established by French Jesuits in 1668, claiming of the area by Simon-François Daumont de Saint-Lusson, in the name of Louis XIV of France, and fur trading posts soon after, this was one of the oldest European settlements in Canada. To the south, across the St. Mary’s River, is the United States of America and the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Due to having the same name, these border towns are known locally as the twin cities; they are joined by the International Bridge, which connects Interstate 75 on the Michigan side and Huron Street on the Ontario side. Traffic on the Great Lakes flows through the St. Mary’s Rapids via the American Soo Locks, the world’s busiest canal in terms of tonnage that passes through it, while smaller recreational boats use the Canadian Sault Ste. Marie Canal.

Bill & Joan Richard

Bill and Joan have been avid RVers since 1992, and happy campers long before that, as they both grew up in families that spent their summer vacations camping. They know what campers are looking for in a five-star outdoor hospitality experience. Bill is a US Air Force Thunderbird alumni, and career Aircraft Engineer, as well as a former professional motorcycle racer.

Joan’s background includes the aviation and hospitality industries, and most recently as an Accredited Groomer, owned a successful dog grooming salon in Southern Ontario. In their spare time, they compete with their collies in Agility, Obedience, RallyObedience and Conformation, and have earned multiple championships and titles in both Canada and the US.

Animals of the North

It is so great to be amid the nature here. However, there are precautions to be taken: 1. DO NOT FEED THE BEARS. 2. Take garbage directly to the dumpsters and lock them behind you. Do not leave garbage out. 3. Do not leave pet food outdoors. 4. Thoroughly clean outdoor barbecue grills after use. Be careful traveling at night. This is when a lot of the animals move. Hitting a bear or moose can seriously injure you and damage your vehicle.

BLACK BEARS Bears are very prevalent in Northern Ontario. A bear’s weight varies with the season, with them weighing 30% more before their winter hibernation. Males vary between 57 to 250 kilograms (125 to 550 pounds). Bears are omnivores and live in forested areas. They do not leave these areas in search of food. Sometimes they will become attracted to a human area because of the availability of food (garbage). Bears are very dexterous and can open jars and door latches. They have great physical strength and can run up to 40 to 50 km/h (25 to 30 mph). Cubs are born in February. Usually a litter is two cubs weighing 10 to 16 ounces. They depend on their mother’s milk for 30 days and reach maturity at 18 months. The average life span is 18 years. MOOSE Also very prevalent in Northern Ontario, moose are herbivores. They consume 9,970 calories a day to maintain their weight. A typical moose weighing 360 kilograms (794 pounds) will consume 32 kilograms of food daily. On the average, a moose stands 1.8 metres (6 feet) at the shoulder. Moose calves are born in May or June and stay with their mother until the next young are born. Moose are not normally aggressive to humans and will choose to run away. Plan your trip and make reservations on
