Reasons To Stay Another Day

Tours are sold at the Campground’s front desk at a discount. ACADIA NATIONAL PARK Driving in the park? Please watch for and obey the signs. Speed limits are strictly enforced as are the rules about roadside parking and pedestrian right of way in all crosswalks. Wear your seat belt and no texting, it’s the law! Cell phone users! Maine’s area code is 207. Call service can be spotty at best on the island. Raining? Don’t despair. Look for the umbrella ( an activity you can enjoy, rain or shine.

). It indicates

Fog? Don’t sit inside. Coastal drives can be beautiful. Inland roads and trails may be obscured. Abbe Museum – Dedicated to exploring the history and culture of Maine’s native people, the Wabanaki. Visitor Center - The park’s Hulls Cove Visitor Center is an excellent place to begin your tour. Maps, guides, displays, and a fifteen minute movie familiarize you with the park and services offered by the Park Service. Visitor information: 207-288-3338 Park Loop Road - This scenic road begins at the Visitor Center (may be entered at many points along its course) and is approximately 27 miles long. Be sure to take your camera and allow enough time to stop and enjoy the many overlooks. Consider parking the car and taking a bus or trolley tour. Cadillac Mountain - This, the highest point on the Atlantic coast, can be reached easily by car via the Park Loop Road or Route 233. For those up to it, there are several hiking trails to the summit. The road to the summit is narrow, winding, very steep, and should be avoided by RVs, mopeds or bicycles. The views from the top are truly spectacular. Allow enough time to fully enjoy them. Carriage Roads - The forty plus miles of car-free carriage roads in Acadia National Park offer the walker, biker, and carriage rider an opportunity to experience the park from a totally different perspective. They are easily accessible. Because of their popularity, these roads are often crowded with a variety of users. Schoodic Peninsula - The peninsula is located 4 miles east of Bar Harbor, Maine, as the crow flies or 40 miles north on coastal roads. The Schoodic Peninsula contains 2,266 acres, or approximately 5% of Acadia National Park. It includes the towns of Gouldsboro and Winter Harbor. There is a 5.5 mile one-way section of park road that hugs the coast around the peninsula with several turnouts. Most of the Schoodic shore is composed of red granite and makes for a beautiful drive rain or shine.

Sieur de monts Spring - Just off of Route 3 in Acadia National Park. Here you will find the Wild Gardens of Acadia, The Robert Abbe Museum of Stone Age Antiquities, and the Acadia National Park Nature Center. This is an excellent spot to learn about the flora and fauna of the island. The Mount Desert Oceanarium - MDI’s roadside attraction at its best. Touch tank, Maine Lobster Hatchery, and the Thomas Bay Salt Marsh Tour are a delight for kids big and small. The Seal Cove Auto Museum - Shares the story — the innovation, the ingenuity, and the power of imagination — that created these vehicles and transformed life in America. The Quiet Side of Mount Desert Island - Lies west of the long Somes Sound. The towns that comprise this delightful part of the island are Tremont, Southwest Harbor and part of the Town of Mount Desert. At the head of the Sound sits the beautiful village of Somesville, the first settlement on the island. Southwest Harbor occupies a strategic position at the mouth of the Sound. Tremont has several small villages. The small harbor between Bass Harbor and Bernard is often filled with fishing boats. Bass Harbor Lighthouse - Off Route 102 in Bass Harbor, the lighthouse is the most picturesque lighthouse on the island, hanging on to the side of the cliffs facing the sea. This lighthouse is still active. Downeast Scenic Railroad – See the beautiful countryside of Hancock County. View eagles and osprey while riding in restored vintage rail coaches. The Downeast Scenic Railroad was named Best Day Trip in 2017 and awarded a historical restoration grant! Great Maine Lumberjack Show – An hour and 15-minute show including Axe Throwing, Log Rolling, Underhand Chopping, Power Hot Sawing, Pole Climbing... and More! RAIN OR SHINE! Driving Day Trips – Wine Trail, Beer Trail, Maple Trail, Moose Trail. Maps available online or at the office. Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory – Located on the west bank of the Penobscot River. The Penobscot Narrows Bridge boasts an observation tower rising 420’ above sea level and the Fort has the best-preserved fortifications on the New England seacoast. Tour tickets at a discount: Bar Harbor Whale Watch, Oli’s Trolley, Walking Ghost and History Tours, Scenic Boat and Fishing Adventures, and more.
