hat do the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the UCPB corporate headquarters have in common? Both are designed by the late National Artist for Architecture, Leandro V. Locsin. His artistic signature is unmistakable: a cantilevered entrance of granolithic adobe rarely seen in present-day architecture.

If the CCP was built as a venue for creative cultural presentations, the UCPB building was created for commercial banking. Who would have guessed that UCPB would one day become a repository of the Filipino’s artistic expressions as well? Since its founding in 1963, UCPB has directed part of its energies toward the preservation of Filipino cultural heritage. By the late 1970’s, UCPB has become a serious collector of paintings and sculptures of Filipino artists. Today, as UCPB marks its 48th year anniversary, its art collection is widely recognized as among the most extensive in the country. The collection number over 500 pieces that span the breadth of Philippine history: from Spanish times, through the American period and Japanese occupation, up to Philippine independence and beyond. One of them, “La Gitana” (1887), an oil painting by Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, is 124 years old. Many of the pieces in the UCPB collection are national treasures created by National Artists, such as “Elias Picnic” (1964), a quintessential impression of Philippine rural life in oil by Fernando Amorsolo; and “The Coconut Industry” (1979), a mural of epic proportions rendered in translucent oils that was commissioned by UCPB from Vicente Manansala for its head office. Also among the many legendary artists whose works have found a home in UCPB are National Artist Ang Kiukok, whose figurative expressionism works are among the most sought-after Filipino art pieces in art auctions; Solomon Saprid, whose recognizable bronze welding technique is brought to fore in his “Tikbalang” series; National Artist Jose Joya, former dean of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts and the acknowledged Father of Philippine Abstract Expressionism; and Nena Saguil, a Filipino expatriate artist who made her mark in Paris with her series of spherical symphonies on canvas. The UCPB collection likewise gives pride of place to the opuses of National Artist Napoleon Abueva, National Artist Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, Angelito Antonio, Antonio Austria, Juan Arellano, Manuel Baldemor, Jose Blanco, Eduardo Castrillo, Robert Chabet, Danny Dalena, Antipas Delotavo, National Artist Carlos V. Francisco, Romulo Galicano, Anita Magsaysay-Ho, Venancio Igarta, Raul Isidro, Raul Lebajo, National Artist Cesar Legaspi, Diosdado Lorenzo, National Artist Arturo Luz, Edsel Moscoso, National Artist Jerry Elizalde Navarro, Justin Nuyda, National Artist H. R. Ocampo, Romulo Olazo, Onib Olmedo, Victor Oteyza, Leon Pacunayen , Jorge Pineda, Cenon Rivera, Rodolfo Rogodon, Manuel Rodriguez Sr., Rodolfo Samonte, Juvenal Sanso, Mauro Malang Santos, Romeo Tabuena, Macario Vitalis, Hugo Yonzon, and Fernando Zobel. This selection of 48 Treasures made in celebration of 48 years of the UCPB stands as a testament to the distinction and discernment which have become the hallmark of the bank, both in banking and cultural excellence. UCPB is committed to continue its corporate social responsibility of promoting and preserving the Filipino heritage through the support of the visual arts.
