GILLIAN COETZEE photographer & designer cape town, south africa

I am a photographer from Cape Town, South Africa. While travelling I have often felt compelled to read the world through a captured frame — the impersonal and the personal: love and hate. For the past four years I have focused on design and the art of music, trying to combine natural elements with technology, a sort of alchemy of the left-brain if you will. Photography — a common misplaced means of communication — can be a means to an end in the right hands. I feel that being honest and revealing the truth can summon emotion faster if the mind is fed the right message by the image. Conforming to the regular and well-known feels, and seems, to stifle free will. I’ve always tried to obtain an open mind and to steer clear of a ‘take-away’ mentality in my work and personal life. I use time and travel to reach my destiny and along the way pictures will help. “Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.” — Haile Selassie
