The men’s indoor track & field team captured multiple SUNYAC titles, and an ECAC title to go with its National title in the 4x400 relay as their accomplishments highlighted a very successful winter season for SUNY Oneonta. Other highlights included, junior swimmer, Michele Sano, capturing the first SUNYAC title for the women’s swimming & diving program, classmate Josh Wake won the ECWC title at 184 lbs. to qualify for the NCAA wrestling tournament and the men and women’s basketball teams finished with winning records overall at 16-10 and 20-6 respectively. The women’s indoor track & field squad also captured a SUNYAC title for themselves in the 1,600-meter relay. The national title winning foursome for Oneonta in the relay included seniors Eric Theiss and Joe Reed, junior Fred Romer and sophomore Sean Daly. They came across the finish line with a time of 3:17.19 to win the event by nearly 1.50 seconds over Carroll College, who placed second with a time of 3:18.51. The National Title is the crowning victory for this foursome this indoor season. Previous to the NCAA meet, they had won both the SUNYAC and ECAC Div. III Reed crowns. With the win in the relay, the men’s track & field program will add five All-America plaques to its trophy case. Also at the meet, Reed earned his second consecutive indoor All-American honor when he placed fifth in the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.37. Reed has now accumulated three indoor All-American certificates to go with his two outdoor honors and now a national title. For Theiss and Romer, this is the second straight year that they have earned All-American honors in the relay event. Last year they were part of the foursome that took sixth place at the NCAA meet. Daly is earning his first All-American honor. The national title is the first for the men’s track & field program, which is only in its seventh year as a varsity sport at the college. It is the second national title for both the men and women’s programs in the last four years. In the spring of 2006, Adrienne Musu Jackson-Buckner captured an individual national title in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Div. III outdoor championship meet. Reed (55 meters), Theiss (400 meters) and senior Mike DeVasto (shot put) were all individual champions at the SUNYAC championship meet. Theiss and Romer were also part of the conference champion 4x400 relay with sophomore Joe Reyes and freshman Sean Wren.

Red Dragons in the Community Five SUNY Oneonta athletes spent March 18-20th at Ithaca College attending the Sport, Sexuality, and Culture Conference. Representing SUNY Oneonta were senior women’s administrator Colleen Cashman along with juniors Lauren McGee and Christine LaGuardia, sophomores Leslie Dauphinais and Joe Reyes and freshman Tom Hancock. The purpose of the conference was to continue to fuel and extend the dialogue around sport, sexuality and culture both in the United States and internationally. Former NBA player John Amaechi was the keynote speaker for the event while other speakers included USA Today columnist Christine Brennan and the Director of Sports Media, Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Ted Rybka among others. “The knowledge and experience I gained at the Sports, Sexuality and Culture conference was invaluable. The most important part of our trip was the chemistry generating through each person that volunteered to attend. The simple idea of being a gay athlete is incredibly scary. However, this conference helped me realize that there are other committed straight athletes right here at SUNY Oneonta that are willing to give 100% with an open mind to change life for the better, even if it is for just one other athlete.” -Lauren McGee “My experience at the Sport, Sexuality, and Culture Conference at Ithaca was definitely something I will remember for a long time. Being a straight male myself I never really looked at the issues that involved the LGBT community. I was always aware that there were many difficulties that people in this community faced, but I never thought anything of it. After this conference I am not only much more aware of the issues, but I feel like I can relate to them as well. Being a minority of Hispanic background I understand how people of this community may feel out casted and looked down upon. Most people only look at race and skin color to determine minority groups but after this conference it made me realize it’s so much more than that.“ -Joe Reyes “I went to the Sport, Sexuality, and Culture Conference with the hopes of learning more about these diverse and sensitive topics. The conference was sprinkled with various speakers who spoke about personal experiences, perceptions of various groups in the media, and most importantly ways to educate others, including campuses, about acceptance of others. As a group, we are looking forward to sharing what we know and what we have learned with fellow athletes and peers to make SUNY Oneonta a safe space for all.” -Christinie LaGuardia

A pair SUNY Oneonta wrestlers earned Scholar AllAmerican honors this past winter from the Div. III Wrestling Coaches Association for their achievement in the classroom. Junior Josh Wake (Delhi, NY) earned Scholar All-American honors for the second consecutive year. This past February he won the ECWC title at 184 lbs. to advance to the NCAA Div. III championships. He finished the season with a 31-13 overall record and a 14-3 mark in conference play. Joining Wake on the Scholar All-American team was senior Michael Hamilton (Yaphank, NY) who also earned his second consecutive Scholar All-American honor. Hamilton wrestled at 174 lbs. this season and put together an overall record of 33-12 including a 12-1 record in dual meets. The Red Dragons also were honored as a team as they accumulated a 3.302 overall GPA, which was 15th on the list of 25 schools that earned the honor. Oneonta was the only SUNY School to earn Academic honors and one of four New York schools to earn team Scholar All-American honors.
