Official Newsletter of SUNY Oneonta Athletics

Morgan & Johnson selected as All-Americans Men’s Soccer wins back-to-back SUNYAC titles The National Field Hockey Coaches Association has selected its 2012 All-Americans and SUNY Oneonta senior Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) and junior Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) have earned honors for their outstanding seasons on the field.

The SUNY Oneonta men’s soccer team won its second straight SUNYAC title this fall and made its second consecutive NCAA appearance after defeating Plattsburgh, 2-1, in the conference tournament championship game. Oneonta scored two late second half goals and then held off a late attack by Plattsburgh to secure its victory.

Johnson and Morgan become the seventh and eighth field hockey players in the program’s history to earn national honors. Morgan becomes the third, two-time, All-American for field hockey and the first since Oneonta Hall of Famer Eileen Colwell went back-to-back in 1992 & 1993.

“We showed tremendous character to win in a difficult environment,” said head coach Iain Byrne. “The game could have gone either way, but our class up front got us over the line with two great goals.”

The two were selected after both being named to the North Atlantic All-Region First Team last week. Both players were selected as First Team All-SUNYAC performers as well this fall. Morgan, who earned second team honors for a second year, was the team’s leading scorer this fall with 33 points on 13 goals and seven assists. Her 13 goals were tied for the team lead and two of her tallies were game-winners. In just two seasons with the Red Dragons, she has accumulated 70 points. In her 40 games, she has scored 25 goals while adding 20 assists. Six of her goals have been game-winners. Johnson, who was selected as a third team player, had a career season this fall with 30 points on nine goals and a team best 12 assists. For her career, she played in 77 games and registered 52 points, scoring 14 goals and adding 24 assists. She had five game-winning goals including three this fall. Johnson and Morgan were part of a trio of players that reached 30 points this season for the Red Dragons. It was the first time since the 1986 season that the field hockey program had three players record 30 or more points in the same season.

The two teams were playing each other for the fourth straight time in the SUNYAC tournament, but the first time in the conference championship game. In the previous three meetings, the two teams were even with a win, a loss and a tie. Last year, Oneonta defeated Plattsburgh 4-2 in the semifinals en route to winning the title. The two teams battled each other for 78 minutes in a scoreless game before Oneonta finally got on the scoreboard in the 79th minute. Leading scorer, junior Luke Halberg, took a pass from freshman Dylan Williams on a counter attack. Halberg took the pass into the right side of the box and angled in toward the goal before putting a low shot into the far left corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead. With Plattsburgh pressing, Oneonta got another break on a counter attack and scored its second goal. Freshman Jake Sutherland took the ball down the left flank and broke in towards the goal where he was able to slide a shot by the Plattsburgh keeper. The Cardinals made the match interesting when they scored less than 30 seconds later on a header. Plattsburgh had one more rush, which produced a weak attempt that was handled by Oneonta keeper Daniel DeBottis. Plattsburgh did hold an advantage in both shots and corner kicks, but it was Oneonta that made the most of its late game opportunities.

Dragon 1 Tales

College Football Hall of Famer Don McPherson spends day at SUNY Oneonta “We need to have the conversation,” said Don McPherson.

The Alumni Career Panel designed specifically to help support upperclassmen student athletes in their quest to prepare for, and enter, the working world, graduate school, The speakers (L-R) Brianne Galli ’11, Paige Harris ’08, etc. Bringing back alumni who Bill Dergosits ’05 and Kelly Stevens ’04 are already in the work force or who have furthered their education allows for the sharing of advice. Forty-five current student athletes attended the event that ran for approximately 90 minutes. Topics that were discussed during the question and answer session included, ******** How the panelist’s lives/careers differ from what they thought when they were a junior in college; ******** To be prepared for potential (professional) interviews by knowing the ins and outs of the specific position that they may be applying for as well as everything there is to know about the industry and the company they are interviewing with; ******** The importance and necessity of networking with not only the coaches and athletic staff, but also more importantly, the academic faculty on campus – it can lead to so many opportunities above and beyond a reference; ******** To start thinking now about finances as things change quickly when you leave college and are out on your own with new fiscal responsibilities; ******** Specific interview questions that may stump a recent grad – don’t be afraid to brag about yourself in an interview, prospective employers want to hear how great you are; ******** The importance of having internships and getting involved in online networking venues such as LinkedIn and CareerAthletes. com.

McPherson then met with the Men’s Committee on campus along with the male athletics department staff. The hour-long discussion centered on being a male in today’s society and what it really means. He talked about breaking away from the traditional, stereotypical ideas of what being a male and expanding the view to include a holistic approach to being a male. “I’m strong, but I’m also sensitive and nurturing,” McPherson told the group. Later in the day he held an open forum in the little theatre in the Hunt Union building where he spoke to the group primarily on the topic of violence against women. His message was how their needs to be a culture shift in how we view the issue. McPherson has delivered school and community based programs addressing issues such as drunk driving, alcohol and substance abuse, bullying, youth leadership and mentoring. Upon retiring from pro football in 1994, he joined Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society as national director of Athletes in Service to America. In 2002 he founded the Sports Leadership Institute at Adelphi University, for which he served as executive director until 2007. In 1995 McPherson turned his focus to the issue of “men’s violence against women,” as director of Sport in Society’s Mentors in Violence Prevention Program, taking over for the program’s founder, Jackson Katz. McPherson emerged as a national leader and advocate for the prevention of sexual and domestic violence. He has conducted workshops and lectures for more than 200 college campuses, community organizations and national sports and violence prevention organizations. His programs and lectures have reached more than 1 million people.

“I am pleased to see Oneonta providing outreach activities for athletes concerning career planning, and was very honored and excited to participate as a panel member for this event. Students should know that it is never too soon to start thinking about “life after college.” Make the extra effort to network and preserve current relationships with professors, coaches, and mentors. You never know what opportunities they may lead to.” Kelly Stevens

McPherson’s day began with a session with the entire staff of the athletics department. During the session there was an exchange of questions and answers geared towards giving the staff a deeper understanding of how they can be an influence for change when it comes to important social issues as hazing and violence against women in light of recent events at two sister institutions. Being an agent for change and talking with young people about acceptable, positive behavior. “We always talk about the bad behavior and what young people shouldn’t be doing instead of talking to them about positive behaviors,” said McPherson during the session.

Four former student athletes were gracious enough to take time out of their busy lives to serve as panelists. The group included Brianne Galli ‘11, Paige Harris ‘08, William Dergosits ‘05 and Kelly Stevens ‘04.

The former Syracuse All-American and College Football Hall of Famer had a clear message October 8th when he spent the day on the campus of SUNY Oneonta. McPherson had a full day of spreading his message of “having conversations” as a way to change the norms when it comes to the specific social issues of hazing and violence against women. His day culminated with a presentation in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House in front of an audience of about 700 students. The audience was made up of primarily student-athletes and members of Greek organizations.
