Trashy to Flashy...

- One Man’s Trash is This Woman’s Treasure -

My love for sustainability and fashion began at an early age with “Vogue.” At my parents accessories company, we would flip through the annual issues looking for inspiration on latest trends and styles.

When I was 12 years old, I started my non-profit “Teens Go Green.” I was trying to find ways to make recycling a fun activity to do with my friends. When I began pageantry, sustainability became my platform. Using; an old Cosmo Girl magazine, a St. Petersburg tour pamphlet, and an FCAT study guide, I was able to create my first newspaper skirt. I then had the opportunity to showcase this project as an opening number for one of my pageants. Thus, began my journey into “trash fashion.”

Eco-fashion combines two of my greatest passions in a way that I enjoy sharing with the world.

There are many forms of ecofashion. Most wearable types of eco-fashion are certified organic clothing, up-cycled custom pieces, or thrifting with second-hand clothes.

The production of clothing, and the fashion industry are known to be one of the largest polluters in the world.

Nearly 3/5 of all clothing end up in incinerators or landfills after one year of being produced.

Trash-fashion is not ready-towear or mass produced. These outfits are made of discarded materials, primarily excess packaging consumers would otherwise throw away or consider trash. It can be argued these “trash fashions” look like exclusive handmade pieces that sit on top of the fashion pyramid as couture.

On the contrary, “trash fashion” is made of the most accessible material we have in society – garbage – and therefore costs almost nothing to make. Yet it can still achieve a high end look.

Environmental event coordinators and fashion shows would reach out to me to host “trash fashion” shows at their events. At these events kids would be invited to participate in a “Project Runway” style “trash fashion” contest.

Each participant would be awarded a refurbished trophy.

It was a tremendous way to grab people’s attention and to start the conversation on living a minimal waste lifestyle.

I remember having a paradigm shift when another environmental colleague told me they did not recycle. How could one consider themselves an environmentalist if they don’t recycle? I took this experience to reflect on the importance in the hierarchy inside the infamous 3 R’s. First Reduce, then reuse, and then recycle. Recycling will encourage the continued production of single-use plastics, papers, and metals, so it is best practice to cut out as much as possible.

With my trash fashion, I challenge myself to find materials that would have been thrown away in my own home or office.

I’ve collected tablecloths at parties, juice pouches at picnics, and traded people’s grocery bags for reusable ones. It was next-level hoarding. The first three months of being an independent woman in Miami, I collected as much non-contaminated trash as possible to make an outfit. Most of it was excess packaging.

I learned how to cut down my waste by 70% by bringing my own containers to refillable stores.

While trash fashion costs almost nothing to make, the time and labor it takes to make them is tedious.

The process can be anything from 5 minutes wrapping a tablecloth like a toga, to 3 months cleaning and manipulating garbage materials into textiles or jewelry pieces. No matter how long it takes to make, the reaction on people’s faces and the longterm impact it makes is always worth it.

Regardless of what form of eco-fashion you choose to pursue, the most important thing to understand is that sustainability must be a lifestyle and not a trend.

It is all about the choices we make as individuals and deciding to go for the more environmentally conscious alternative even when it is inconvenient. Long term growth always supersedes instant gratification; in fashion, our earth, and life.

I grew up listening to Jack Johnson, James Taylor, Neil Young, and Johnny Cash, which then led me into my teen years where I definitely strayed from the classics and indulged into bands like One Direction and The Fray. But during high school and now leading into my third year of college, I’ve found my music taste expanding, particularly into “older music”.

I tend to lean towards bands like Bread and Fleetwood Mac (or just 70’s music in general), but am continuing to find albums and artists from all different eras, learning about them, and what musical and cultural impact they have.

With each issue of Oneness, I will dive into either a particular artist/band, certain time period of music, or a singular song to analyze, enjoy, and share my interpretation of music through the ages. I hope you will follow me on this musical journey as we honor the great musicians that have paved the way for musicians today.

Something I have learned about song writing is that you have to dive deep into who you are. Figure out what story you want to tell, and it’s not always an easy one to write about. Our conversation with a college athlete...

Sports and exercise are not only great for the body, but wonderful for the mind too. Is there anything better than listening to your favorite songs while doing blood-pumping exercises that you love?

The goal is to be your healthiest self. Moving your body should be fun and exciting, not something you dread.

What are some of the benefits you have experienced during your time as an athlete?

What’s your best piece of advice to someone who is considering taking up running?

Being an athlete has been such a great way to find a positive and fun way to keep my body healthy.

Caring for your body is so important and running makes it incredibly fun.

Just start by going out and having fun! But listen to your body’s limits because running is a fun way to get in shape, you don’t want to push too hard and hurt yourself.

In your opinion, what is the greatest challenge people face when tryin to start a new sport?

Why do you think that it is so important to know your limits and prevent burn-out?

I believe that one of the main struggles when trying to start a new sport or even just trying to get fit, is learning to push your mental barriers. You need to be able to trust your body and not let your mind hold you back.

Knowing your limits is crucial not only for physical injury purposes but you also need to pace yourself. Listen to your body so that you can enjoy the sport rather then it becoming a chore.

History of Shakespeare in the Park Written by: Britt Haefeli

It is no secret that theatre has been a lively and important pillar of history. From tales being passed down from generations, to colosseums being filled to the brim with audience members, theatre has been an important aspect of human connection.

For centuries stages have been a plethora of spaces ;from whispers in attics amongst families, to a soap box in the middle of a park.

The classic saying “The world is your stage� rings true. It is also true that one of the worlds most infamous playwrights is Shakespeare.

He is said to be as commonly quoted and referenced as the Bible.

His works have inspired new genres and forms of theatre, from Romeo and Juliet to Hamlet, his plays are some of the most recognizable in history. In looking at the history of Shakespearean theatre one thinks of the Globe Theatre, and Shakespeare in the park.

Interesting enough, the first official Shakespeare in the park was not established until 1954. The term was coined by Joseph Papp, the founder of Public Theatre in New York City.

These productions originated in the Lower East Side and the showings were free. However, this is not where the idea for theatre in the park began.

In the 1930’s thousands of actors and other theatre professionals who were out of work were put into the Federal Theatre Project (FTP).

This project was a part of the Work progress Administration, this project was the sponsor of thousands of performances across the country, one of the main forms being the Caravan Theatre series. The Caravan theatre has been a performance medium that has been around for centuries. The original idea behind this style of performance was to spread the word of god from the Catholic Church.

Centuries ago when education was a rarity, many lacked the ability to read. So the Church began these parades to show the teachings within the Bible. It was almost like having parade floats, but instead of mascots and a car,

it was a carriage pulled by a horse that had a mini stage, leaving enough space for one scene of the play to be shown.

There wasn’t enough space for set or costume changes, so once the scene ended the caravan would pull forward allowing for the next caravan with the next scene to be shown. This ideal used centuries ago was then used to travel around America in the 1930’s. This then became one of the founding ideas for Shakespeare in the park. This summer activity is one that has allowed a great deal of growth and expansion inside of the world of theatre. These shows are often a lower ticket cost, allowing for vast range of audience members to be in attendance. This ideal of allowing theatre to be more inclusive has been a topic of debate amongst many theatre advocates.

The reason that Shakespeare’s work in particular are popular with this style of theatre is because his works are in the public domain, meaning, it is free for anyone to use in any way they would like. This is also how Shakespeare’s work can often change in such dramatic ways. People have put Shakespeare in; modern styles, futuristic styles, anything, the adaptation possibilities are endless. While admittedly this is an art form that cannot be enjoyed at the present moment, it is one that is fascinating to experience. If you are looking for activities to fill up your summer next year look into what theatre companies in your area do Shakespeare in the park.

August Advice: Going back to school...

COVID-19 has flipped our lives upside-down.

Everything is different: how we work, learn, and interact with one another. What is our new normal?

For those of us who will be heading back to school this fall, things will be different than what we’re used to. But that is no reason to stress out! You can do small things to de-stress and manage time well so that you can make the most out of this bizarre season.

It is still unknown if K-12 will go back to physical school or if it will stay online for now. And most colleges are resorting to online learning for at least the upcoming semester. Whether in-person or online education is in the cards, these 5 tips will keep you level-headed throught it all.

1 Prioritize time management. While the summer

has been far from calm, the rush of academic work can be incredibly overwhelming.

So, make sure you manage your time well so that you can have smooth sailing days.

Try the Pomodoro method or a variation of it. Work for 20 minutes straight then give yourself a 5 minute break.

Grab a snack, drink some water, or stretch. Give your mind a body a quick escape to stay on task and productive.

2 Make to-do lists. Sched-

ule time (30 minutes or so) every day to write out all of the tasks you must complete for the next day. This places your plans on paper to ensure you won’t forget anything!

Most of us don’t think it’s super fun to create a to-do list. But there’s no reason it can’t be! Pull out some colorful pens and doodle/draw around your list. This will make it much more attractive so that you are motivated to check every item off!

3 Feed your mind (and your belly too). Eating healthier

meals and snacks with help keep your mind clear and will keep your energy levels higher.

Swap out chips for almonds or popcorn. Instead of a sandwhich, have a hearty salad. It will make a big difference. And don’t forget to drink water too!

TRY IT OUT Try out these 5 tips to destress and increase productivity so that you can crush all of your goals!

Work, school, and juggling everything else is overwhelming. But remember - it will all be worth it in the end.

Self confidence will help you pull through the difficult times and you’ll come out the other side even better.

4 Get up and get outside! Schedules can become hectic

and it’s hard to make time for things, but try to create a window in your day for exercise. Getting your blood pumping will release endorphins and put you in a better mood.

When you have a more positive outlook, your stress will melt away. Then, you can knock out any task with ease!

Take 10 minutes every day to organize things. Straighten up the book shelf, throw away those water bottles, and then get back to work. You’ll feel more accomplished for the day!

A Few of My Favorite Things...

However, I did manage to create a long and most likely never ending list of my favorites songs/artists...

I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who hates it or doesn’t care for it. Everybody has their favorite genre, artist, or song that they listen to constantly.

When considering my own favorites, it was like asking a mother to choose her favorite child; you can’t do it simply because you love them all equally. As previously mentioned, there are so many factors to consider when choosing your favorite.

The memories that revolve around the song, or artist, the song itself, and my complete love for the foundational parts of it. How the artist chose to use a guitar or cello in the piece. The lyrics that have influenced tattoo ideas, or ones chosen to hold close to my heart as reminders for the future or past.

Slow, heart felt songs like Harvest Moon by Neil Young and Deep End by Holly Humberstone will always steal my heart away.

Most of the time, I’m able to tell if I like a song by how it begins. A song that can draw me in from the beginning is hard to find, but I would be surprised if you listened to any Fleetwood Mac or Ray LaMontagne song and weren’t immediately hooked.

What’s my style?

While my taste tends to stick around acoustic, 70s, folk type music with bands like Bread or The Civil Wars, I will always venture out into other genres of music like Nirvana or Ella Fitzgerald (both of which can be found on my favorites playlists).

The range of these artists, and many more that I have grouped together for my favorites playlist, may seem out of place and a bit weird; there is nothing I love more.

Because even though the songs may be different, they will always remind me of a part of myself.

It was difficult to pick my top two favorite songs (in no particular order). I took into account all of the different factors above when forming my list. While my main focus for my articles will always be oldie music, it was hard to not include one song that is by popular artists today.

Harvest Moon

by Neil Young

The first song is Harvest Moon by Neil Young. It is also another slow guitar song (a theme you’ll find with the top 5) accompanied with beautiful lyrics.

This love ballad seems to fill every inch of the room, makes you long for a love that you either have or want to have.

The lyrics are tear provoking and make you want to hold your significant other in a slow dance; it was the sweet guitar that caught my attention and continues to draw me deeper into the song.

Overall, the song is beautiful. I find it hard to find another word to describe this song. It’s filled with love and adoration, and will absolutely be played at my wedding in the future.

Deep End

Holly is an artist that has just recently stepped into the light of popularity. Out of the 3 songs she’s released, “Deep End” captured my attention first.

The slow, deep guitar that opens up the song is something you can feel in your bones and becomes impossible to ignore. While her voice is soft and sultry, it was the lyrics that brought this song to be number one on my list of favorites.

“Deep End” holds a lot of meaning to me, and I felt like I could find myself inside the words.

Because this song is so self-explanatory, and I find it to be incredibly personal, I won’t divulge into the what meaning these lyrics hold to me (I may or may not be getting a tattoo inspired by it). Listen and maybe you too can

Reminder: BLM is NOT Over.

By Gracie Pfaff Over the past few weeks, I have noticed the media covering less and less about the Black Lives Matter movement. Black Lives Matter is far from over. It’s not a trend where we post black squares and move on. Black lives matter all the time and we have to show our support until we see justice.

We dedicated our July issue entirely to the Black Lives Matter movement. Our world truly is at a breaking point, and we recognize that now is the time for change. You too can be a changemaker. We touched on the topic of this article in our July issue. Read it to find more resources and perspecitves on the BLM movement to better inform and inspire you.

We are well aware that this is a topic many debate over. However, we believe human rights are nothing to debate about.

Purchasing from Black-owned businesses and restaurants is a great way to put your money where your mouth is and support. Words are not enough, your actions must follow.

Signing petitions and calling your local representatives are both tangible ways to instill change in your community and hopefully, the country as a whole.

Studies have shown that Black entreprenuers are more likely to rely on credit and using personal savings for their company due to the fact that they are less likely to recieve outside funding than their white counterparts. Buying from Black owned businesses is a simple way to show your ongoing support and love.

Signing a petition can take as little as 15 seconds and it shows that you truly care that justice is served.

We all have different political opinions and everyone has a right to their beliefs. However when it comes to basic human rights, we must to protect the oppressed.

Once you’ve informed yourself on the history of Black oppression and racism, it is important that you share that knowledge with the people around you.

If we vote in a way that will have a positive impact on the Black community and other oppressed people groups, we can start to see a more loving world.

Well-informed people make a difference. You can learn how to change. You might become more accepting and caring.
