I

have a fascination with beauty, elegance, and innocence throughout fashion photography. It's so moving it can grasp your attention and you end up feeling empathetic throughout its story. When it was time to come up with the theme for issue 5, I wanted to integrate that style of beauty with a little bit of edge and romanticism. That is where the seasons issue was named from. Since Issue 5 is released at the end of summer but the beginning of autumn and fashion week, I wanted the reader to get that sense of all seasons. This issue incorporates color & prints from spring/summer with dark & edge from fall/winter. I want to thank all my readers and contributors. This magazine and especially this issue would not look as beautiful as it came out without the time and dedication spent from my contributors. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I have been compiling it together. Stay in touch with ONE Magazine and myself for updates, upcoming submission dates and more.

resort trends Beautiful looks from resort '12

Written by Danielle Peterson danyellpeterson.blogspot.com Image credit to vogue.com & style.com

Every year resort season gets bigger and better, and this year might have been the best of the best. Designers typically have been prone to only produce a collection of 10 or 12 items, but this time around we saw that the future of fashion is leading toward a more serious focus on four strong collections not just fall and spring. This season also demonstrated the fashion world’s ongoing love affair with prints. It’s clear that floral patterns are here to stay, but it was the stripes during resort that stole the show. Also, where we have typically been seeing long, wide pants we saw short and skinny grazers leading us to believe that fashion is going to be a little more playful once the snow melts from winter. Structure was a key focus for fall, and while the love for peplums continued onward, it was the natural form that was especially highlighted during resort. Designers gave us an affirmative statement for the female form in the shape of pleats and waist belts that accentuate curves. At the same time, they tended to drift away

from layers and return to the simple and chic form of the shift dress. Some trends from fall may have carried over into the new season, but it’s clear that resort time is a reprieve from the high maintenance and a time for fashion to be fun and comfortable. Grazers    Where we saw a resurgence of wide legged pants in fall, resort takes us somewhere fun and casual with grazers. Whether it was Christopher Kane showing some ankle with his pastel pink jeans or Proenza Schouler’s edgy leather grazers, these IT pants made a statement in just about every collection and in all different ways. Labels such as Belstaff and DKNY incorporated grazers in a more business than casual way while Christian Dior and Jill Stuart made the ankle pants feminine by pairing them with floral blouses or lacey peplums. One look designers seemed to love during resort was mixing the grazers with ankle strap heels to elongate the legs.

Furthermore, the diversity designers used this season with patterns, colors and textures will do you a favor come spring time because you will be able to blend the pants in effortlessly to any trend the new season brings us. So get your ankles ready ladies, come resort time, they will be getting a whole lot of attention. Shift Dresses    Designers showcased their ability to bring past staples into the here and now during their resort collections by reimagining and modernizing the shift dress. Prabal Gurung and Jason Wu displayed their take on the dress in black and white pieces that emphasized the shape and made for a stunning mod adaptation. On the other hand, Peter Pilotto made his shift dress fit in to our current print-obsessed frenzy and played with textures as well as color resulting in a dress that looked anything but dated. Although shift dresses are typically defined as not having a waist line and being sleeveless, Proenza Schouler and Suno produced stunning interpretations on the shift form but added sleeves, which can make the dress more wearable with seasonal changes. Paired with tights and a jacket, the shift dress can get you through the colder months or left on its own can be a standout look for resort and spring time. However, no matter how you wear it, take

inspiration from the designers who each showed his or her own creativity on a classic form and make it yours and make it fun. Stripes    Stripes are never far off the fashion radar, but when resort season arrives, it will be the pattern on everybody’s mind. From Henry Holland to Thakoon, designers utilized stripes in a multitude of ways and sometimes mixed the horizontal with the vertical or used different colors to make them stand out. Christian Dior and Jason Wu went for simple statements with stark contrasts, but other designers played with the mixing patterns idea and started with stripes as a base and added another pattern or even more stripes. Because stripes are one of the simplest ways to jazz up an outfit, by adding other prints to the ensemble, labels like Suno, Preen and Marni made their looks more intricate and detailed. In a similar twist, Balmain created outfits consisting of a mixture of stripes that were reminiscent of a chic version of Beetlejuice. Vertical stripes tend to be the most slimming, but designers played with so many ideas in resort that it’s worth a shot to experiment and try something new by mixing a striped shirt with a patterned skirt. In this fashion age, we've seen too much is just enough.

Pleats    Say goodbye to the straight and narrow pencil skirt because resort is going to be all about the va va voom that pleats have to offer. Not only are they simple and demure, but also they have ability to make a skirt more interesting right off the bat. However, they do have one caveat; pleats tend to make hips look larger, but my advice is to forget about it and use it to either accentuate your curves or create the illusion you have them. Louis Vuitton’s pink pleats made a gorgeous dress look somewhat ethereal. Matthew Williamson and Sachin + Babi both used them to add volume to their outfits. Stella McCartney made pleats look chic, simple and cool with her minimalist style, and Belstaff ’s pleats created a fun mixture of masculine and feminine. Pleats come in all different sizes and whether you’re going for the thin streamlined look that Oscar de la Renta perfected with a silver skirt or the bold thick look Marni incorporated for school-girl chic, there’s a little something for everyone in this trend that will immediately make your outfit more daring.

Waist Belts    Typically, looks like the shift dress tend to deemphasize the waist and curves, but pleats and waist belts remind us we have them and remind us to show them off. Waist belts were the designers’ go-to accessory this season and like pleats, accentuate curves on even the smallest frames. Some designers like Oscar de la Renta and Jason Wu went for understated and subtle waist belts whereas Rag & Bone and Christopher Kane used them to add one more pop of color. Ricardo Tisci of Givenchy was anything but subtle with his take on the classic piece and displayed it more as an avant garde accessory than a classic staple. The waist belt has the ability to make a simple outfit a little more intricate and to make your curves stand out. So whether you want to go for subtle and sophisticated or bold and chic, the waist belt is the perfect way to take your outfit to the next level.
