NIGHTLIFE AND

Oneida County has a long and distinguished reputation for its robust nightlife. Back in the 1950s, a number of well-known local clubs and restaurants Richard Barrett Editor, Observer Dispatch were part of a popular jazz circuit that featured performances by world-class musicians and singers. Some of those venues are now gone, but there are plenty of venues here that host some of the best live jazz, blues, folk, rock and alternative music around. The area is home to a long list of legendary musicians who continue to regularly play live on local stages. Live theater and performance art has never been more prolific and at a higher level in Oneida County thanks to our landmark theaters-The Stanley Theater in Utica and the Capitol Theater in Rome-- and a renewed effort to bring top-performing Broadway shows to the area, including Cinderella, Chicago and Cabaret this year. There are also a few smaller, intimate venues featuring live

Entertainment

musical performances, Community Theater, and independent film screenings, and for those who simply want to catch the latest movie releases, the area’s movie theaters are conveniently located in commercial areas surrounded by endless shopping and dining options. Kick up the excitement with an evening of horse racing at Vernon Downs, or playing a few hands of poker at Turning Stone Resort, our premier resort casinos, located a short drive from Utica or Rome. There’s always plenty of fine food, shopping, and entertainment on hand and these venues are always high energy. It’s hard not to get swept up in the excitement of a roaring crowd cheering on a horse, or seeing the joy of a player who just won big on a slot machine. These venues are literally a one-stop shop for nighttime entertainment. Our local arts community doesn’t fold up at night, either. Rather, it comes alive with live concerts at a variety of venues, film screenings at Cinema Capitol, poetry readings at The Tram, and evening museum tours during First Fridays at MWPAI, one of the most distinguished art institutions in the country, home to works by Leonardo Da Vinci and Salvatore

Dali. With downtown revitalization under way in hubs of Utica and Rome, many old, abandoned buildings have been re-purposed into artists’ lofts and commercial spaces. These spaces are becoming popular spots for after-hours painting and calligraphy classes served with a side of wine at venues like Art & Vine or Painting with a Twist. A fun way to relax, socialize and get creative. Fine and casual dining is literally all over the map and the only limitation is one’s personal taste. The choices seem infinite. Greek, Italian, Bosnia, Middle Eastern, Indian, Asian, American, Farm to Table, Mexican, Dominican, pub food, natural food, seafood, steak houses, the list goes on. The variety of local cuisines reflects the diversity of the county’s ethnicity, and the choices rival those of much larger metropolitan areas. Oneida County has a rich history and tradition of outstanding restaurants and we are fortunate to offer locals and visitors alike so many quality unique dining options. For those feeling adventurous, on any given night you’ll find a comedy show, an open mic, trivia time, karaoke, or a poetry slam waiting to be enjoyed.

HIS TOR IC TORY EVENTS & ATTR ACT IO N S PATH THROUGH HIS

If a weekend immersed in history is your ideal getaway, Oneida County is the perfect destination. Located at the convergence of many important travel routes, an extraordinarily diverse amount of significant history happened here. In Rome, visitors can tour Fort Stanwix National Monument. Known as “the fort that never surrendered” for successfully thwarting an intense siege in 1777, Stanwix was built to protect traders during the French and Indian War and was also used during the Revolutionary War. Just six miles away at the Oriskany Battlefield, explore the site of one of the Revolutionary War’s most deadly battles. Considered by many to be a critical turning point in the War, hundreds of brave soldiers lost their lives in Oriskany, fighting for American independence. In Sherrill, the Oneida Community Mansion House offers an intriguing tour that lends insight into a

mysterious utopian community that endured for decades – even though marriage was not allowed. The building of the Erie Canal, which started in Rome on July 4, 1817, sparked countless cultural and commercial developments across New York State. Take a relaxing cruise aboard Erie Canal Cruises for a historic narration of this iconic National Heritage Corridor and National Landmark. Interested in the history of American sports? Check out the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown or the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota. Be sure to visit the Baron Von Steuben Memorial State Historic Site, see astounding bygone architecture and decorative arts at Fountain Elms, learn about the Oneida Indian Nation at Shako:wi Cultural Center, and explore a long list of historic sites just waiting to ignite your passion for the past.

HAUNTED HISTORY TRAIL

Do You Believe Explore the trail to hear Central New York’s bone chilling history and meet ghosts from the past. Do you believe in the paranormal? Whether you’re a true believer in ghosts or a die-hard skeptic, visit any of the spooky sites on the Haunted History Trail of New York State to test your beliefs. Stay at a haunted inn, join an investigative team on a ghost hunt, or go on a candlelit tour of a haunted building. For more hauntings visit HauntedHistoryTrail.com.

Haunted Sites CAPITOL THEATRE, 220 W DOMINICK STREET, ROME One of the most interesting and stylish haunts in Central NY is the depression-era Capitol Theatre. Built in 1927, this art-deco theatre seats 2,500 and boasts a Moller Organ in the orchestra pit. Paranormal occurrences date back more than 30 years. Witnesses have reported a shadow figure of a man, organ music (despite the lack of a working organ until 2003), whispered conversations, opening doors, and even the sounds of an ongoing show late at night.

SHOPPES AT THE FINISH LINE, 800 COURT STREET, UTICA Ground was broken in April 1847 for what was originally known as The Utica Globe Mill. In 1871 a fire destroyed the entire mill. Larger and improved buildings were completed in 1873. Mill operations ceased in 1916. Today, the Utica Globe Mill is known as The Shoppes At The Finish Line & Utica Brews and while the industrial history may have been left behind it is still present not only in the architecture but the haunting activity that continues. Many investigations of the Mill have led to countless paranormal experiences and even the capture of disembodied voices.

UNION STATION, 321 MAIN STREET, UTICA Union Station, built in 1814, is long reported to be haunted with the numerous accidental deaths that occurred along the railways. Today, it is common for people to report witnessing ‘ghost lights’ moving along the tracks at the station, phantom passengers riding in the cars, ghostly conductors pacing the platforms and the haunting sounds of tragedy echoing through the station in the late night hours.

OUTDOOR ADVENTUR E

Do you love to Fish for anything? From eightinch bluegills to fat walleyes to big, muscular carp to relentlessly combative smallmouth bass? What about trout? John Pitarresi Editor, Observer Dispatch How about fly fishing for trout? For many anglers, it’s way more than a hobby. It’s more like a lifestyle, and there are plenty of opportunities to live it right here in Oneida County. We have more than 100 miles of public fishing rights on trout creeks and rivers in the county, and hundreds more that run through state lands or are accessible by landowner

permission. Oriskany Creek is one favorite destination. It is easily accessed, and it is terrific, with many wild fish in the upstream areas, including occasional brook trout, and some bruisers in its last few miles as it flows toward the Mohawk River. West Canada Creek has an even bigger reputation, and for good reason – it offers the real possibility of a 20-inch brown on any trip. It has been regarded as one of New York’s top trout streams just about forever, and it’s been even better since the DEC began stocking two-year-old fish more than 20 years ago. A good day on the West Canada, with big fish rising to steadily hatching mayflies, might not match what you might find on the famous streams out West or on the fabled rivers of the Catskills, but close enough. And sometimes it is better!

There are many other choices: Sconondoa Creek, Sauquoit Creek, the upper Mohawk River, the east and west branches of Fish Creek, and many others with low-key reputations or none at all that offer high-end experiences. You can find plenty of places to throw popping bugs for panfish and bass, too. Not a fly fisherman? That’s no problem. There are innumerable waters where you can fish with bait or lures for almost any species with great success. Oneida Lake and Lake Delta are terrific walleye and bass fisheries, and the Mohawk River and Barge Canal offer a wide variety of species, including occasional northern pike of impressive dimensions. If you love to fish, Oneida County is a great bet, no matter what you are after.

Get Away to Winter Adventure Central New York is a four season recreational destination, with plenty of SNOW for those that love to downhill ski, crosscountry ski, Jim Rolf snowshoe, ice Trail Coordinator NYS Snowmobile Association fish and snowmobile. Oneida County is home to 12 snowmobile clubs, accounting for the highest number of club members cumulatively across New York State. These all-volunteer crews maintain over 550 miles of trails as well as many more miles of community-connector trails. Our high rate of membership is driven by the fact our local clubs provide some of the best snowmobile trails in NYS and the fact that a large portion

of the County receives significant amounts of snowfall each year. From the hills in the South, with Tassel Hill at 1940’ above sea level; to Oneida Lake; to the northeastern gateway of the Adirondack Park and to the northwestern trails connecting to the world-renown Tug Hill Region… the Oneida County trail system is a premier snowmobiling destination with family friendly amenities located on or near the trails. Winter sports opportunities are endless in Oneida County. The Utica Comets, AHL pro hockey team, play on home ice at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium to thousands of cheering hockey fans each season. The Utica Curling Club dates

ONEIDA COUNTY IS HOME TO 28 GOLF COURSES WITHIN 28 MINUTES.

With 28 courses within 28 minutes, golfers can immerse themselves in an entire vacation of course exploration. Valley View course in Utica was designed by the famous Robert Trent Jones Sr., whose design philosophy was “a golf hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey.” Rome Country Club’s beautiful course is completely irrigated (roughs, too!) and is rated four stars by Golf Digest. Turning Stone Casino Resort has five spectacular courses, three of which are PGA-level, 18-hole championship courses. Atunyote and Kaluhyat were each honored on Golf Digest’s prestigious America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses list for 20152017. Those looking for a more relaxed game will enjoy Pleasant Knolls, a player-friendly recreational course

offering 9 holes of par 36 golf. Golfers in a hurry will appreciate Sandstone Hollow. Designed by legendary course architect Rick Smith, with the busy golfer in mind, the Hollow ranks among the top 25 par 3 courses in the United States.

On behalf of the Mohawk Valley Association of Realtors, thank you for visiting our great area. We sincerely hope that your time here in Oneida County was Ed Jekel everything you ExecutiveOfficer Mohawk Valley Association of expected, and REALTORS® much more. The Mohawk Valley is home to many things, but for those of us who live, work and play here, it’s our home. And like all good neighbors, we’d like to share our home with you. If your visit here left you wanting a more permanent experience, one where your daily life is rarely routine, you’re like many other transplants that have made this region their forever home.

Oneida County delivers four full seasons of outdoor living, theater and entertainment, night life and activities. Virtually everything our great state has to offer - many of New York State’s greatest attractions - are either in the backyard, or a day trip away. There’s camping, fishing and boating in the summer. When the snow flies, there are hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails to explore, as well as access to the best skiing in the Northeast. In the spring and fall, the region boasts some of the most magnificent foliage in the nation. And dining throughout the region is second to none, with more family-owned specialty restaurants than franchised eateries. Commuting in the area is a snap – no matter where you are, as most of our residents say – “you’re only 3 songs away from anywhere”. Our area is welcoming to people from around the world, or around the corner. No matter where you’re from, you’ll feel like
