Origin The origins of fan publications can be traced back to 19th century literary groups in the United States, when the Amateur Press Association published collections of fiction, poetry, and commentary. They had H. P. Lovecraft as one of their biggest representatives.

1914 The Little Review Jane Heap and Margaret Anderson publish the celebrated literary magazine The Little Review, a form of self-publishing close in spirit to the fanzine that brings together an extraordinary collection of modern American and European writers.

1916 Dadaism Dadaism was born as an intellectual and aesthetic vanguard movement that proposes the opposite of the concept of reason, a denial of everything and destruction through destruction.  —  Their artists produce and distribute small books as art zines. —  The use of collage, appropriation and stamping influence subsequent fanzines.

1926 Amazing Stories Readers of the professional magazine Amazing Stories send their own stories in exchange for the magazine publishing their names and addresses in order to start correspondence with other readers. — There is a strong community of fans that exchange ideas and stories. — Amazing Stories helps define and launch a new genre of pulp fiction.

The Comet

1930 The Comet The Science Correspondence Club in Chicago publishes The Comet, the first science fiction fanzine. —  Fandom science-fiction clubs publish their own fan magazines or fanmags. —  The mimeograph emerges as a cheap medium that facilitates the production and distribution of fanmags.

1940 Fanzine Term Russ Chauvenet, author of the zine Detours and one of the founders of the fandom of science-fiction, coined the term fanzine (a combination of fanmag and letterzine) in order to distinguish them from prozines, professional journals of the genre.

1950 Beat Generation The groups of writers of the Beat Generation encourage the racial, women, and gay liberation movements as well as the rise of the hippie counterculture as a rejection of the classic values of society. — They mimeograph small runs of their own chapbooks. — They use self-publishing and their own distribution channels to disseminate their radical works due to the difficulty of doing so through the current means of the time. These events represent a milestone in the history of the fanzine.
