Promoting highland vegetable industry - Festivals - Understanding the Writ of Kalikasan

Festivals Festivals nowadays are becoming a continuing strategic tableau to wonders of a certain place. These are events where Filipino celebrate to express warm welcome of the harvest, express religious fervor, portray culture that are handed down from generation or commemorate a historic event. They are more expanded and elaborate celebrations featuring various competitive cultural shows, dances, theatrical performances, exhibits and presentations and other related activities from local government units and various participating groups. Among the popular festivals are Sinulog in Cebu, Atiatihan in Aklan, Dinagyang in Iloilo, Moriones in Marinduque and the Panagbenga of Baguio City. Through this, the sense of history, pride , values, experiences and cultural identity among the people are strengthened. These festivals while showcasing the culture and heritage of the community also generate income and create livelihood as they build on the strength of the tourism industry. The festivals also serve as venue not only of participants but also of tourists to gain deeper understanding of the cultural heritage of a place. The problem of crass commercialism, however, comes into the fore. And this is what the government through the Department of Tourism is watching. As the primary planning, programming, implementing and regulatory government agency in the development and promotion of the tourism industry, it provides hands on support to these festivals while ensuring that the each festival has distinct character and observes religious or cultural sensitivity.
