Green Philippines

Green Philippines If you think that the massive planting of trees in the country today is a novelty, your memory might have failed you. At a time when President Marcos issued Timber Licensees Agreements (TLA) left and right to his cronies, he saw to it that the country should likewise go into tree planting to replace those already cut. Yet, even supporters of the strong man acknowledge that the forests were plundered and that the tragic floods that hit Ormoc City in 1991 was only the tip of the iceberg even as then President Cory Aquino administration tried its best efforts to recover lost gains in forest protection and the shaping of policies. Causes of deforestation are mixed, traced to land use policies of old which allowed the conversion of forest land for residential and agricultural purposes and logging, both legal and illegal. In community-managed forests, it is believed that people who live in the forests or in adjacent areas, once given access to forests and security of tenure, will be the best guardians. However, this still has a long way to go. The support of government and non-governmental organizations are needed. The onset of global warming finally took a toll worldwide made nations to seriously change environment policies, the Philippines included. Thus, from the old Alay Tanim project of the 1970s, where only students and a few government employees participated, recent programs to regreen the Philippines took a dramatic turn. Today, it is a must that all sectors should do their share of planting even just a single tree not only in the forests, bare lands, highways and backyards but throughout the length and breast of the archipelago. Even organizations like the Rotary are bent on helping the government combat the climate change. Even media organizations like the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas decided to do their share and went on a nationwide tree planting among its members. However, caring the young tree is another issue, it should be remembered that of the thousand trees along the highways planted some 30 years ago, only a handful survived. The survival of these planted trees therefore becomes a challenge to all of us if we really wanted to regreen the country. New polices should be developed on this aspect as people tend to cut more than plant trees. Only then can we say, this generation did its job well and good. (PS Licas)
