A WORD FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND CHAIR In 2020 more than a million Ontarians participated safely in festival events presented by organizers in 70 municipalities – despite the pandemic. Our successes during COVID-19 were made possible by expanding our festival from one weekend to four weeks, and supporting digital and restricted inperson events. By providing flexibility, agility and stability to our independent organizer network, we brought free arts and heritage experiences to Ontarians and supported our sector through the challenges of the pandemic.

In 2021, our organization will have two main areas of focus: 1) acting as drivers of cultural tourism once it is safe to get back on the road, and 2) again convening Ontario-wide organizers for our fall festival. Our post-pandemic vision is an Ontario whose many diverse regions are recognized as arts and culture destinations by local, provincial, national and international tourists alike. This year’s festival will be September 24 – October 24, 2021. We look forward to playing a key role in the recovery of our sector, and contributing to Ontarians social and economic well-being. We are deeply grateful for the substantial and meaningful support of our funders and sponsors, which makes this work possible.

FESTIVAL 2020

FESTIVAL OVERVIEW The Ontario Culture Days festival is made possible thanks to a network of 300+ organizers from across this province. The decision to move forward with our festival during the COVID-19 crisis was made in consultation with local arts and culture leaders, through round table meetings and individual conversations.

What changes were made to the festival format in order to move forward?  The festival dates went from three days to four weeks D igital, pre-registered and self-guided events were encouraged  Our online platforms were enhanced to accommodate digital events O ur staff educated organizers on health restrictions for safe in-person events, and verified their commitment to following provincial health regulations W e coordinated our efforts with other national and provincial Culture Days partners to maximize impact and our collective efforts

FESTIVAL OVERVIEW In the end, our hard work paid off.

There were over 1,000 registered events led by 350 organizers in 70 municipalities. Media impressions rose from 5 million last year, to 118 million this year. Audience size grew too. According to a general population survey, over one million Ontarians (or 7%) connected with Culture Days over the course of the festival.

IMPACTS ACROSS DISCIPLINES AND COMMUNITIES The vast majority (83%) of registered programs were designed for remote audiences, be they digital recordings, livestreams or self-guided events. While this was a huge change in everyone’s “standard operating” procedure, our network seems to have made the switch relatively well.

71% of organizers report being satisfied or very satisfied with the reach of their online programming. And in a year that has been difficult for all involved, 89% even reported having fun organizing their event.

All that being said, while most events were online, the overall attendance for the provincial festival was fairly evenly split between in-person and online events. In many ways, digital allows us to better connect people across a vast geographic region, but there is something inherently compelling in the appeal – and benefits – of inperson programming.

IMPACTS ACROSS DISCIPLINES AND COMMUNITIES When COVID-19 hit, Ontario’s arts and culture sector was devastated by wide-spread lay-offs, event cancelations, venue closures, and secondments within municipal administrations. We saw the role that the Ontario Culture Days festival would play in supporting recovery and reopening, but knew that the shape of our multidisciplinary event would notably change beyond the introduction of online events.

Health restrictions included physical distancing, masking, plexiglass barriers, and limits on event size, singing and wind-instruments.

IMPACTS ACROSS DISCIPLINES AND COMMUNITIES In 2020, we saw more storytelling, music, film and video, as well as theatre. But we also saw a lot less craft and visual arts, as well as fewer choir and dance programs, and those located at libraries and individually owned studios.

The impact was regional too, and differed by municipality type.

More events were registered in metropolitan areas, with many less in rural and mid-sized communities.

Events in southwestern Ontario dropped off, likely because events that would have taken place were concentrated around institutions that were forced to close; those institutions would have occupied a larger share of cultural offerings in the area.

However, we must keep in mind that digital, for all its utility, did demonstrate limits. That indicates that great care must still be given to ensuring that in-person events can take place.

CULTURAL TOURISM We believe that arts & culture play an integral role in creating a well-rounded tourism experience. At Ontario Culture Days we see our role in acting as drivers of cultural tourism, and this past year marked the beginning of our significant work in this area.

In 2020, we: R eleased the website ON Culture Guides (oncultureguides.ca), featuring a growing roster of travel itineraries of Ontario communities designed for use throughout the year  Produced Day in the Life, a series of community profiles to encourage hyperlocal tourism during our fall festival In 2021, look out for: M ore local travel itineraries and stories, accompanied by enhanced user experiences on our website A symposium convening tourism and arts marketing experts focused on amplifying Ontario as an arts and culture destination T he release of an online course to increase the effectiveness of small and medium-sized arts and culture groups in competing directly in the tourism market

SHARING THE STORIES OF ARTS & CULTURE IN ONTARIO Throughout the year we use our marketing channels to share the stories of Ontario’s arts and culture.

Our media partners, Star Metroland and PATTISON Outdoor, were vital in helping us share these engaging and important accounts with readers near and far. In addition, our new website gave Ontario Culture Days a prominent hub to feature arts and culture articles alongside our new Culture Guides.

PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD WINNER ARTS MILTON + PFLAG  HALTON MURAL PROJECT  MILTON, ON  As part of their Ontario Culture Days programming this year, Arts Milton joined forces with PFLAG Halton to bring a new mural to the community, which is now permanently on display on the facade of a Milton heritage building. The mural by artist JR Marr offers a message of pride, inclusivity and diversity, and can be viewed by Milton locals at any time of day.

 RUNNER-UP CITY OF OF THUNDER BAY INDIGENOUS LIAISON TEAM + THUNDER BAY LIBRARY  EVERY CHILD MATTERS  THUNDER BAY, ON The City of Thunder Bay’s Indigenous Relations and Inclusion Team hosted a series of programs, in partnership with the Thunder Bay Library and Boomer’s drive-in theatre, as part of Orange Shirt Day. Participants were invited to watch a drive-in screening of the film “Indian Horse,” which follows the survival of a young boy through the Residential School system. Attendees wore orange shirts, decorated their cars with signs that said “Every Child Matters,” and shared photos of the event on social media.

ACCESSIBILITY  WINNER BRUYÈRE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE CJ FLEURY  BE MOVED BY ART  OTTAWA, ON Organized by the Bruyère hospital organization’s artistin-residence, CJ Fleury, Be Moved by Art at Bruyère was a month-long program designed to be accessible, safe, and to inspire the imagination. With COVID-19 restrictions in mind, their hub created programming for both the patients of Saint-Vincent – a photography exhibit and an art hunt located inside the hospital – and the general public, hosting an online exhibition and a self-guided outdoor art tour.

RUNNER-UP HELSON GALLERY  CREATIVE OUTLETS: ART IN A TIME OF ISOLATION  Throughout Culture Days, the Helson Gallery exhibited Creative Outlets: Art In a Time of Isolation, a show that featured projects created by local artists in the early months of the pandemic. Seeking to remove barriers to participation in the arts, the exhibition featured many creative forms of expression, including sewn gowns and masks, journals, sculptures, and more.

CREATIVE SOLUTIONEERING WINNER ARTS MILTON + RICK IMUS  CURBSIDE CONCERTS FEATURING “THE VAUDEVILLIAN”  MILTON, ON  Arts Milton kicked off their festival programming with The Vaudevillian, a celebratory night of distanced community gathering. Families watched a 1930’s-style band from their own lawns and driveways, and audiences were able to safely experience live music – something they hadn’t enjoyed in over 6 months – as the show travelled to three separate street-side locations over the course of the evening. One audience member likened the feeling of watching the performances to the freedom she felt after WWII, when people were dancing in the streets.

 RUNNER-UP LINCOLN MUSEUM AND CULTURAL CENTRE  PIONEER WEEK VIDEO SERIES  LINCOLN, ON Every year in late September and early October, The Town of Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre celebrates Pioneer Day to mark the harvest. In order to mitigate the risk of an in-person festival, their 53rd annual Pioneer Celebrations went virtual, bringing legacy vendors and historians into the homes of Lincoln locals. With a little help from modern technology, the Pioneer Week video series introduced residents to blacksmiths, beekeepers, and the mighty steam engine, all of which was streamed on Instagram via IGTV, Facebook, and YouTube for everyone to access.

PARTICIPATION FROM A DISTANCE  WINNER ARTS MILTON + HOUSE OF CHORDS  COME TOGETHER  MILTON, ON House of Chords hosted two virtual sessions during Ontario Culture Days, bringing together musicians of all abilities for a collaborative experience. The program consisted of two parts: first, participants were invited to create and submit video and audio files of The Beatles’ Come Together. House of Chords then digitally combined those files to create one video. In a second virtual meeting, contributing musicians discussed the process, and reviewed the final product. The result? A jam session for the digital age, where local musicians could come together through music, despite the distance.

RUNNER-UP TOWN OF AURORA  CULTURE IN A BOX + CULTURE RALLY  AURORA, ON  For this year’s festival, Aurora’s Cultural Services Division reached out to local partners to help produce two programs: Culture in a Box and a Culture Rally. The town provided participants with a box full of activities and crafts which could be completed safely from home. Families and households were also invited to participate in the Culture Rally, a scavenger hunt that sent locals exploring Aurora from the safety of their cars.

ARTISTIC PROGRAMMING PLAYS A KEY ROLE Artistic programming directly produced by Ontario Culture Days serves an important role in allowing us to target resources to specific initiatives at the local level, and effectively fulfill a key part of our mandate: to bring the public into the creative process.

New to 2020, our Creatives in Residence format is a consolidation of artistic and public programs into a framework that facilitates the expansion of our mandate beyond the festival itself, into year-round activity. The new series allowed us to build stronger relationships with our participating creatives, as well as grow their relationship with our audience. Programs were developed throughout the year over a series of online, live-streamed, and self-guided events that created multiple points of access, and supported a deeper engagement in the artistic practice of the Creatives.

Based off of the positive feedback from our creatives, partners and participants this year, we will be including the Creatives in Residence series into our annual programming calendar.

 FROM FOOD TO PALETTE WITH KANIKA GUPTA AND AMIT KEHAR  OTTAWA A series of video workshops on watercolours and dyes derived from common grocery items. The videos were supplemented by mailed art supply kits, and inspired by the scarcity of grocery store shelves in the early days of the pandemic.

ANISHINAABE LANGUAGE SERIES WITH MATTHEW STEVENS AND JONATHAN COLWELL  PORT PERRY & MISSISSAUGAS OF SCUGOG ISLAND FIRST NATION  In this video series, our audience was introduced to the richness of Indigenous vocabulary, as well as values, teachings and place-names, that are rooted in Canada today – while simultaneously disrupting notions of a pan-Indigenous identity.

INDIGENESIS: COOKING LESSONS WITH PRE-CONTACT INGREDIENTS AND TECHNIQUES WITH TAMARA GREEN  PORT PERRY & MISSISSAUGAS OF SCUGOG ISLAND FIRST NATION  Chef Tamara Green focuses on the intersection of research and menu development, rooted in the use of pre-colonial ingredients adapted for contemporary kitchens.

 SETTLER HOW-TOS FROM LYNDE HOUSE MUSEUM  WHITBY Videos series and self-guided program on settler heritage activities – teaching how to spin wool, create rag dolls, and make Darby cakes. Each video shared some history, and outlined how these items would have been made at the Georgian-era Lynde House in the 19th century.

 THE LONGEST DROP: PUPPET PERFORMANCE AND WORKSHOP WITH KORNEL WOLAK AND CLELIA SCALA  KINGSTON A shadow puppet and musical performance brought us back to 1979, and a 17-year-old who set a world record by dropping an egg from inside the CN tower.

This original piece was accompanied by online workshops, so participants could create their own shadow puppets.

ANISHINAABE RESILIENCE THROUGH FASHION AND DESIGN WITH THE INDIGENOUS FRIENDSHIP CENTRE AND ART GALLERY OF ALGOMA  SAULT STE MARIE  Writer Mitch Case and photographer Anna PelletierDoble documented the annual Anishinaabe tradition in Sault Ste. Marie of Ribbon Skirts and their presentation to the community. This year the cultural art form came to include shirts as well as masks.

CULTURE DAYS @TPL Culture Days @ the Library, held annually in partnership with Toronto Public Library, celebrated its tenth year with a series of online programs that reached audiences throughout the province, country, and even internationally. The program featured engaging, participatory programming from five artists across disciplines, and got people dancing, beading, writing and telling stories all in their own homes.

New to 2020, we expanded our work with the featured artists, and worked closely with them in the summer before the festival to create content on our website.

Audiences got to know the artists and their practice through blogs, videos and DIY activities in early September, and then could take part in the live-streamed programs during the month-long celebration.

SAGE TYRTLE Sage Tyrtle is a professional storyteller who tells stories all over the world. Her stories have been featured on NPR and CBC radio and she is a Moth StorySLAM winner who has also appeared on the PBS tv show Stories From The Stage. She teaches The Art of Storytelling in schools, to individuals, and in corporate settings.

JUSTINE ABIGAIL YU  LIVING HYPHEN

Justine Abigail Yu is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Living Hyphen, an intimate journal that explores what it means to live in between cultures as part of a diaspora.

In this workshop, Living Hyphen led participants through a digital writing workshop specifically for IBPOC storytellers of all ages and writing levels.

BEADING WITH NAOMI SMITH

POETRY WITH PAULINA O’KIEFFE-ANTHONY

DANCE WITH BALLET CREOLE

Naomi Smith is actively involved in sharing traditional teachings with audiences, focusing on the ways of the Indigenous people of the Woodlands and Northeastern region from a historical and contemporary perspective often through the story of beads. Her artwork embraces ancestral designs in the form of bags, adornment, and accessories using quillwork, beadwork and other Indigenous methods and materials.

An award winning spoken word artist, Paulina is a member of the League of Poets and arts educator who aims to teach, support, engage and inspire youth with alternative methods of education are not available.

In this workshop, Paulina O’Kieffe-Anthony led a poetry and spoken word workshop for young adults.

Ballet Creole was founded in 1990 by Patrick Parson, a Trinidadian-born dancer, choreographer, drummer and educator. Ballet Creole’s versatile dancers and musicians perform traditional and contemporary dance and music from around the world, with a particular emphasis on the Afro-Caribbean diaspora. In this workshop, the company combined structured contemporary dance techniques with the physicality of traditional movements derived from the African Diaspora.
