I define myself as a young woman of leadership, responsibility and commitment. In general, I consider myself a designer. I studied architecture, although throughout my training I have been also interested in other aspects, such as graphic design, interior design and industrial design. Because of this I would like to learn in different fields, to maximize my knowledge and obtain a position where I can grow professionally in the design industry, gain experience and find opportunities where I can achieve my goals. I am bilingual and with good communication skills in Spanish and English. I assure I would be an excellent addition to any environment and hope to contribute with my multiple capacities to the tasks and complete them successfully. The Lake View is an art gallery. This three story building has an access thought the principal street and another one thought the sidewalk. It has three different areas of expositions, interior and exterior. The building is next to a natural pool with a zone to rest and take the sun. It has doble heights and vertical louvers to control the sun exposition in the upper levels. The project was design in 2012 under the supervision of Professor Josue Rivera. !" #$

During the 1960s, construction in Puerto Rico proliferated as a result of several events. The University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus opened in 1965 the first Architecture School in the country that was already beginning to bear fruit, preparing an emerging class of professionals. In addition, new tools allowed more accuracy and better representations. The Island experienced an evident economic progress and the environment was propitious for the development of architecture in the Island. Under this frame many Cuban architects would have to get to practice their profession in the country because of the Cuban migration after the defeat of General Fulgencio Batista and the triumph of Fidel Castro in 1959. Gelabert & Navia Architects represents one of several that were nourished of the many professionals who exerted after their arrival to Puerto Rico. These developed a wide variety of projects during the 60s and the first half of the 70s, located mostly in the metropolitan area of ​​the country.

The examples still standing characterize, to a large extent, the current Puerto Rican urban condition. The amount of work that is still preserved by the architects is significant. However, both the authors and their works have been excluded from the current architectural debate on modernity in Puerto Rico. The architects José A. Gelabert and Rosa M. Navia designed more than eighty projects in Puerto Rico. Their works could be grouped according to the program they hosted: residential condominiums and hotels, businesses and industries, urbanizations, schools and buildings for the community. In general, the work of Gelaber-Navia shares some of the emblematic characteristics of Modernity, among them: the free floor, the articulation of the corner and the accentuation of verticality by “stripes” in a large part of their buildings. Gelabert and Navia contributed to the development of the city in Puerto Rico, designing a large number of structures according to the period in which they had to build. Buildings that today are part of the daily life of many and relevant pieces within the group of buildings that make up San Juan.

Their projects seem to focus on housing, considering that more than half of their work on the island was aimed at housing. They demonstrated to have total control of the properties that were presented to them, specifying successful projects. They are a couple that demonstrated fairness in the work that was presented to them, each one attending a primordial vertex of the work. The most emblematic projects of them should be part of the modern discourse of Puerto Rican architecture. After the completion of more than 80 projects around the island and reside for 15 years, in 1975 Gelabert and Navia migrated once again, this time to Venezuela. The reason attributed to the decline of the economy in Puerto Rico, specifically construction. Gelabert taught at the University of Venezuela, and both got their licenses and built for a period of 5 years. In 1980, they decided to go to the United States as had been their intention from the beginning. Today the architects reside in Miami and throughout their years they obtained the licenses of Washington and Florida, however the only one that is valid until the day of writing is the Puerto Rico one.

Miramar Place is an apartment complex located in Santurce, San Juan , Puerto Rico. This building have commerce in the first level, a training area, a two level restaurant, a bar and a travel agency. It has four towers and the connection between them is through bridges.

This complex has studios of one room and apartments of two and three rooms. The building has two pedestrian entrances, one in each street and a parking lot for the residences and users of the locals. The project was design in 2015 under the supervision of Professor Josue Rivera.

This project was design during a student exchange in Madrid, Spain (ETSAM). It consists of a community that uses the materials provide to make domes for housing, and convert the actual structures in commerce, orchards and gardens obtaining a self sustainable village.

The community recycles everything available, collects the water and moves it through the place for reuse. The project was design in 2015 in collaboration with Alba Sánchez Álvarez and under the supervision of Professors Eva Gil, Federico Soriano & Pedro Urzais in “Atlas: Emulations Of The Informal IV”.

Rio Piedras Center is an office building in the heart of the city. The building has a big parking lot for the employees and users since the city doesn’t consider the occupation of car around the area. The project consist in two towers looking to the historic center of Rio Piedras.

This seven story building has access thought an intersection to the interior central plaza of the project. It has a restaurant and two platforms with pergolas for recreation in the first floor. The project also includes a theater in the second floor and double height in its waiting area.

The perforated walls on facades are to control the sun exposition. The project has a private exterior space for the employees in the third floor, on top of the theater from where you can see the city. The project was design in 2016 under the supervision of Professor Enrique Abruna.

The Heritage Documentation Programs administers Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), the Federal government’s oldest preservation program, and companion programs Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), and Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS). Documentation produced through the programs and housed in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress, constitutes the nation’s largest archive of historic architectural, engineering and landscape documentation. The HABS, HAER, and HALS documentation, consisting of measured and interpretive drawings, large-format photographs, and historical reports, is developed by a combination of career National Park Service (NPS) staff, students and professionals through sponsor funded projects, and donations to the collection. HABS, HAER and HALS work in cooperation with groups in both the public and private sectors to help underpin preservation efforts, including rehabilitation, community development, advocacy, and historical interpretation.

In the summer of 2016 I participate with my fellows architecture interns Diana Serrano, Janirat Williams and Caleb Sloan in the program. That year the team documented in New York the Contagious Desease Hospital, Isolation Ward I. We were under the supervision of Architects Robert Arzola, Paul Davison & Daniel De Sousa. Opened on June 20, 1911, Isolation Ward I was one of three detached isolation wards build as part of the Contagious Disease Hospital complex of the Ellis Island U.S. Immigration Station. Independent and distinct from the Contagious Disease Hospital’s, three isolation wards were design to provide receiving, discharging, and hospital facilities for immigrants suffering from serious contagious diseases and their combinations such as scarlet fever and diphtheria. Calling for a greater degree of isolation, these three wards were locates on the far northeast end of Island 3 and where originally free standings. In 1914, however, Isolation I & K has their exterior walkways raised, covered, enclosed, and connected to the hospital’s main corridor.

Design by Jame Knox Taylor, the Supervising Architect of the Treasury, Isolation Ward I containes two ward units on either side of the building’s party wall. Each ward unit contained its own discharging rooms, linen closets, and a kitchen on the first floor and bedrooms, a bedroom and sitting/dinning room on the second floor for USPHS nurses. Isolation Ward I’s exterior was executed in the same Georgian Revival mode as the rest of the Island 3 hospital: red tile roof, pebble and dash stucco wall treatment complemented the style and monumentality of the Island 2 general hospital while detailing and lower scale made it visually distinct. During their forty-three years of occupation, the isolation wards proved to be flexible spaces responding to the various needs of patients and staff. Isolation I remained relatively less altered than the other two, but it too has walls removed, tile added, and other modifications that affected its appearance and use over the years. The Ellis Island U.S. Immigration Satation ceased operation on November 12, 1954 and the complex has remained unoccupied.

This industrial design project consist of a block that can have different uses, bookshelf, space divider, frames or facade. It is inspired, as name refers, in a honeycomb. The object was design in 2017 under supervision of Professor Eddy Figueroa.

09 HOMELESS SHELTER ARCHITECTURE

The population of homeless people has increased by almost 40% in Puerto Rico in the last two years. This due to different causes, the use of controlled substances, the lack of accessibility to treat mental and health conditions, the recent migration out of the country, the elimination of federal public assistance, school dropouts, divorces, the abandonment of the elderly, the difficult reintegration of former inmates and the lack of resources to afford housing due to the huge economic crisis. The homeless experience a series of problems related to negative social stigma and rejection of the community. These people are in the streets vulnerable to inadequate conditions or innumerable health complications, decreasing their quality of life and requiring urgent services. The state has failed on multiple occasions creating supporting areas, which eventually fall apart due to the little sustenance they receive. That is where non-profit entities, most of them affiliated with a religious organization, are the ones that take the initiative to help.

However, the help these centers offer is temporary, they have a predilection for certain groups, often they do not have enough funds and their infrastructure does not encourage the reintegration of the homeless, on the contrary, it marginalizes them. The assistance of these entities transforms misery into a dependency, fostering a symbiotic relationship with the church.

The intention is create a help center with capacity to accommodate a large number of homeless people in a save place, concentrate aid next to it, have self-sustainable spaces, and architecture that encourages their intentions of rehabilitation, offer temporary housing, prenticeships, work and tools for their social reintegration to all groups of homeless.

As a result of ambulation there has been a segregation between marginalized groups and the community. The abuse is one of the most unpleasant situations; the need and misery take over the environment and gradually affects us all. The largest number of homeless people is in the metropolitan area of ​​the country (51%), between Hato Rey, Río Piedras and Santurce. Just as the homeless are in the shadow of wealthy people, the abandoned or disused buildings in prosperous areas could be seen as the best analogy. For this reason I propose to use disused buildings around the city to serve as shelters or centers that provide services to the homeless.

The project has a principal exterior plaza for the use of the homeless and a service building. In the first level you will find the hospital, and a security area. On the second floor there will be services offices and rehabilitation programs. The third floor is a more private area, here will be rooms for the homeless who are in the process of reintegration, with recreation areas and playing rooms. In this level are also the class rooms to give workshops and classes that can help them to be independent. The project was design in 2017 under the supervision of Professor Carlos Betancourt.

KEY

N.S. Savannah was the first nuclear powered merchant ship. Built in the late 1950s at a cost of $46.9 million, including a $28.3 million nuclear reactor and fuel core, funded by United States government agencies, Savannah was a demonstration project for the potential use of nuclear energy. Launched on July 21, 1959, and named after SS Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic ocean, she was in service between 1962 and 1972 as one of only four nuclear-powered cargo ships ever built. Savannah was deactivated in 1971 and after several moves has been moored at Pier 13 of the Canton Marine Terminal in Baltimore, Maryland, since 2008.

In the summer of 2017 I participate with my fellows architecture intern Cristina Montenegro and Diana Serrano in the program. That year the team documented varios ships, the main engine of the Nuclear Ship Savannah, Gas Turbine Admiral William M. Callaghan and Steamship Cape Inscription. We worked under the supervision of Todd Croteau.

The GTS Admiral W. M. Callaghan, was first constructed to be used in an industrial capacity but later optioned by Military Sealift Command to be used in logistical work throughout the fleet to deal with the changing needs of the military. The ship was delivered in 1967 and was used for transport responsibilities during the Vietnam War. It has been used in a variety of different services in its history since it was initially launched, including the War on Terror in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

The SS Cape Inscription was originally launched in 1975 as the SS Maine. The States SS company took the first contract in 1976 and it operated until 1979, when it was purchased by KEY the ship Whitney National Bank. Later on 1987 Low Pressure Turbine was reacquired from Aits commercial roles and B Low Pressure High Speed Pinion brought back under military control under C Low Pressure First the Reduction Gear Jacking Gear Electric Motor Maritime Administration Dand renamed the SS Cape E Jacking Gear Inscription. Since then Fit has been kept in ready High Pressure Turbine G maneuvering Valves reserve status and used occasionally for heavy lifting operations to European theaters to have the equipment air-lifted to active engagements.

The Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) was established in 1969 by the National Park Service, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Library of Congress to document historic sites and structures related to engineering and industry. This agreement was later ratified by four other engineering societies: the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. Appropriate subjects for documentation are individual sites or objects, such as a bridge, ship, or steel works; or larger systems, like railroads, canals, electronic generation and transmission networks, parkways and roads. From its inception, HAER focused less on the building fabric and more on the machinery and processes within, although structures of distinctly industrial character continue to be recorded. In recent years, maritime documentation has become an important program focus and they have associate with the Maritime Administration, (MARAD).
