Wedded to Success ‘Marriages are made in heaven, and marriage cards are made in Menaka’ Menaka, sure does live up to this tagline! Meet the man who made it possible. hen you are in love, you’ll want the world to know! And finally, the day has come, to join hands with your beloved, you can call all your friends and relatives to share the celebration of your love. Wait a moment; don’t you want this little piece of paper to be unique? Don’t you want it to reflect the happiness you have piled up in your heart? Yes, wedding cards are special indeed. This week, we get talking with Mr. S Shangaralingam, CMD, Menaka Cards who has been in the business for the past three decades. Making my first imprint Having studied printing technology in 1980, I wanted to try the then new form of printing – screen printing. Opportunity came in the form of a friend’s wedding, for which I designed the wedding card. The second card I designed was for my own wedding. Both the invites received much appreciation and this inspired me to specialise in wedding cards. And, here I am. Climbing up the ladder From an organisation that had just two employees, our company has grown not only in numbers. We always give our customers the best. From imported machinery to the latest technology in print, we are constantly updating ourselves. At present, we have screen, foil, thermal and offset printing. Delivering it right We constantly innovate. And since we do mass production, we are able to deliver good quality at an affordable price. Prompt service is another major factor

that helps us succeed. We have something for everyone Our price range varies from Rs. 1 to Rs. 500 per card. The different choices we offer are the Market Range (just one to five rupees per card), XL Range, Premium and Status Range. We want to cater to all classes of people. Whatever be your choice, we seek to give you a price worthy product. Choosing the right one for you When it comes to selecting your wedding card, a) First, have a look at the different price ranges we offer. b) Check our catalogue and choose the print style. From the type of card, colour to the font size, you’ll be able to opt for the right one from our samples. c) Then, you can have a look at the proof for your complete satisfaction.

factory in a village in Tirunelveli, even as we work collectively towards success, I am happy that this initiative helps men of that area get jobs. Expanding horizons

There are many. I like the sari border series in particular. They have also garnered much attention among customers.

As of now, we have around 36 dealers; we are looking at reaching the 100 mark soon. Also, we are looking at expanding our foreign offices to 12 countries across the world.

My dream

A word for our customer

My favourite

There are several gaps in the industry, the price can be reduced further, we can import more machinery to provide interesting options and yes, we can even work on our export plans. I am looking forward to filling these gaps. We have a

When you come to choose your card, you’ll have to look at as many options as possible and then decide. We have over 1000 designs and pricing is also very reasonable. Never, look at one design and decide, if you look further, you might find something better!

d) Finally, delivery is done at the promised time with an accuracy of 99.9 percent. We even comply with 24 hours deadline in case of emergency. Voted the most famous design There are around 10 designs that people opt for com-

The Bessie Bead Bazaar Looking for that rare shade bead for your ethnic wear? Seventh Avenue in Besant Nagar has it all in its gypsy kadais.

p e o p l e . t r e n d s . e v e n t s

stroll around Besant Nagar for sea breeze and quick snacks is a great idea for Chennai summers. But ask college goers and they will vouch the area to be one of their jewellery hot spots. The credit goes to a handful of roadside gypsy jewellery shops in the Seventh Avenue road near the beach. The gypsies have lived in Chennai for almost a century now and though a few have diversified into other jobs, a chunk of them still uphold the tradition of selling colourful beaded jewels. These gypsies live in

the gypsy colonies in Kotturrpuram, Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur. Most often than not, your wardrobe might have a rare shade of sea green or wine shade of maroon for which finding jewellery would be a difficult task. Drop in at any of these roadside shops and your search is sure to end. The gypsies travel to Mathura, Delhi and buy beads in loose. “We know the popular shades people look for and

also when we look at a particular shade, our instinct tells us if it will sell,” says Mariappan, one of the hawkers. So, what are the different varieties offered by these roadside sellers? The bigger beads are the attractive lot, as they come not only in vibrant rare shades, but also because the colours never fade. The beads are also in different shapes like oval, rectangular, square and come in mixed combinations too. Long chains with small rind beads intercepted with bigger transparent ones also give a trendy look. Bracelets, rings and earrings are also available at these shops. This beaded jewellery adds on a natural look to your attire when matched well. The north Indians in the city and the foreigners are a regular source of income for these sellers. The foreigners especially purchase in bulk to take it back to sell in their country. However, the local jewellery dealers don’t

seem to strike a balance with the prices negotiated by these gypsy merchants. The shops open as early as ten in the morning and close by nine at night. They are also open on all seven days and December is the peak sale month. The prices range from Rs. 10 for rings and go up to Rs. 60 for the heavy beaded jewellery. These roadside gypsy shops have struck a great rapport with youngsters and event managers as well. And making these vendors put up stalls in their events is the recent trend, be in college fetes or music concerts. Mariappan excitedly shows us the business card of the Earth Sync event coordinator who offered them an opportunity to set up free stalls at the venue. “We made great sales there and we hope more such opportunities cross our path,” smiles Mariappan. - Nandhini Ramkumar

Belly dancers, bejewelled elephants, beach weddings, nothing seems too extr a detail for themed weddings in the city

edding planners in the city are probably used to sourcing unusual requests: professional belly dancers, a traditional Malayali orchestra, vintage cars rarely spotted outside of good old MGR flicks or a sixteenth century palace setting snuggled into a kalyana mandapam. With more weddings entrusted to professional hands, brides and their grooms are more than willing to give shape to their ideal wedding, and speak what their dreams dictate. “About a decade ago, one had very little choice; except to like or dislike some things their parents picked for their wedding. Today, people are more forthright and specific about what they want. And wedding planners can give shape to their dream wedding and source everything for them. “When the option of having your dream wedding is available, then why not dare to dream,” says Rekha Rangaraj of Sumyog, a wedding planning company which she runs with her partner, Vidya Singh. “Nine out of ten weddings we plan are based on a theme. It may be something as simple as a colour code, or a motif, or even a lotus: from the wedding invitations to the ‘thank you’ cards, the theme will be followed down to the last detail. Of course, there are grander themes and more curious demands, like vintage cars straight out of old time movies for the bridegroom to arrive in. People want to be unique, and that’s a good thing, we enjoy having to do different things at each wedding.” Themed weddings have gained favour among many; and gives people the chance to add a touch of their own individualistic flavour when planning their special day. And with wedding planners to manage logistics, it has become easier to be more inventive. “It’s a special day that comes once in a lifetime, and people are willing to go the extra mile to make it special. Also, themed weddings have probably caught on because of peer pressure; everyone seems to be doing it, and so others want to give it a try,” says Saraswathi Kumar of Event Arts, an event management company that handles weddings as well. Whether or not the concept is catching on, one thing is for sure: themed weddings are going the extra mile in trying to find originality. “Everyone wants to stand out, and make their weddings unique, so people are coming up with more innovative ideas, and their preferences get more spectacular. Event Arts has done an Arabian Nights theme, complete with belly dancers flown in for the event, and got elephants for another wedding on the outskirts of the city. But obviously people understand we had limitations, if we tell them that animals aren’t allowed within the city limits, then we offer them other options,” she says, “Mostly, with the media’s coverage of hi-profile themed weddings, and people’s growing

exposure, they are more conscious of the fact that their dream wedding can be possible.” Do the extravagance and exclusivity that a personalised themed wedding affords come at a steep price of seven figure amounts? “Not really,” says M S Sowmya of Vivahas, a Chennai-based event management company. ‘It really depends on the client’s budget. We start off by asking a client what their budget is, and then we offer them options. For small budgets, wedding planners may obviously not be able to provide extravagant flourishes, but wedding plan-

ners are becoming popular not just with the elite, but with the middle class weddings also,’ she then adds with a smile, “At one wedding, we had to provide four white horses, drawn like Lord Indra’s chariot, and it turned out very expensive.”

The usual is the ‘thengai pai’, which includes a coconut and betel leaves, packed in a plastic bag or the traditional yellow cloth bag. But recently, some families have opted for trendier and more stylish versions of the regular ‘thengai pai’. Here are a few:

looks like imaginations are sure running wild it comes to planning weddings. - Krithika Sukumar

Just Jute An eco-friendly option that’s fast becoming popular are jute bags. Instead of using plastic bags or plastic baskets, jute bags are being used as ‘thengai pais’. You can get jute bags from Rs. 30 onwards, so they are not too heavy on the pocket!

Go Bling Why not bling thengaai bags? They add colours, charm and bring in just the right amount of excitement! A little expensive and often for such large quantities, they have to be custom made, but it’s worth it!

Say ‘yes’ to Paper If it’s to keep a coconut and a few other items, try paper bags. It does not have to be the regular brown bags, but you can opt for the recycled paper bags, which come in different colours and allow you to print your family name on!

Basket Wise Why should it always be ‘bags’, and why not baskets, we ask? Give your guests a ‘thengaai basket’ which they can later use at home. It’ll be easy to carry and user-friendly!

A Starry Wedding! The phrase ‘The Big Fat Wedding’ completely applies to some big and famous families in India. Topping the list are the wedding ceremonies of Sahara Shree Family and the Mittals. The wedding of Vanisha Mittal, the daughter of London-based steel tycoon Laxmi Niwas Mittal with Amit Bhatia, a Delhi based investment banker was much talked about. Taking place at the famous Palace of Versailles in France, the wedding celebrations went on for six days and the total estimated budget of the wedding was £30million (almost Rs.200 crores)! Other Star Performers! Raveena Tandon’s wedding took place at the Jag Mandir Palace on an island in Pichchola Lake in the Udaipur city of Rajasthan. Hrithik Roshan’s ‘almost fairy-tale-like’ wedding to his long time sweetheart Sussanne took place at the Golden Palms Resort and Spa, Bangalore. The latest show stopper was none other than Shilpa Shetty, this time it was her dressing that got her the attention. She looked radiant in designer Tarun Tahiliani’s two piece outfit in gold with Swarovski-encrusted bodysuit along with a satin sari-gown in the same shade while hubby Raj chose a black half sherwani suit. And yes, who’ll forgot our own Jyothika who wore a splendid pink sari with numerous Zari work. Her pretty red and white garland sure did get the fancy of a many bride-to-be.

f a s h i o n . s t y l e . i c o n

sk any married woman and she would without a single thought, proudly say that the most memorable, most treasured and most loved ensemble in her wardrobe, is her bridal sari! Whether she wears it again or not is a completely different issue, but her bridal sari has to be the best and she does not mind spending a fortune for that one day.

Here are a few bridal wear saris that are in vogue and becoming very popular amidst the young and trendy:

Silk saris, preferably Kanchivaram saris are the preferred choice for most South Indian brides. But, for the contemporary bride there are aplenty options to choose from.

It’s true that a sari can make any women look beautiful, but when buying your sari for ‘the’ day, there are certain parameters you should take into consideration, like: your weight, height and skin complexion. The fabric and design of a sari has to be complement your body type and make you look extra special on the most important day of your life. Here are some tips for choosing the right sari for your body type.

- Embellishments should be in vertical lines.

For the Plump Bride

So are you someone who likes modernity with a touch of tradition, then Vastra kala saree from Pothys is the one for you. It is available at a price range of Rs.10,000 – Rs.2,00,000.

- Banarasi saris with their fine zari work - Mysore silk saris - Kashmiri embroidered silk saris - Rajasthani embroidered saris - The Bandhej saris - Italian crepe block printed Find Your Sari

- Buy saris made of lighter fabric, like crepe saris as these will drape and fit close to your body giving you slimmer appearance. Avoid saris made of heavy glossy material. - Dark colors work well. - Learn how to drape the sari properly or else it might make you look plumpier. For the Slim Lass - Buy saris of heavier fabrics like brocade saris and heavy silk saris. Tissue saris and organza saris also give a fuller effect and are apt for slim women - Light coloured saris work very well.

- Heavily embellished lehenga style saris also go well with a slim body type. It’s even better if you can even get customised saris to accentuate your figure. For the Pear-shaped Lady - Buy slightly heavier fabric with fewer prints and avoid high neck blouses as they make you look heavier. - Dark coloured saris work for this figure, you could contrast it with different blouses.

For the Apple-shaped Bride - Buy light fabric and avoid loud patterns - Dark coloured saris work very well. - Full sleeves or puffy sleeved blouses should be avoided, as they make your arms and shoulders look bigger. What’s haute in Chennai?

Eat, Drink & Make

Now that the knot is tied, let’s have the feast of our lives…

edding is that one occasion in life that is of utmost significance.

At a Muslim friend’s wedding, where I was the only person to starve and celebrate their unison for being a pure vegetarian, Basha Biriyani had put up a riot of

delicacies. Different varieties of biriyanis - chicken, mutton, prawn and so on – and several other delectables kept the guests and well wishers, well, wishing well. Two long tables of food were catered in the buffet style and people kept going back and forth for more chom chom, doi or monsuri. And to my surprise, I discovered that Basha Biriyani can be contacted not just at #30/32, 2nd Main Road, Jawahar Nagar, Chennai 600082 or on 9003096660 but also at!

And in a country like ours, where food is not just a part but the lifeline of any occasion, wedding brunches, luncheons and dinners have emerged into a trendy affair than just the usual serving of ‘sambhar-koottu-poriyal’. Catering at weddings and in fact, all kinds of unique Indian (espcially Tamilian) functions that involves feeding a minimum of 50 guests is a flourishing business in the city. And like any other business, caterers have also tried to adapt to the changing world and evolved with a splash of modernity. Starting from names like R.S. Catering Services (where R.S. probably stands for Raghuveera Saranathan) or C.V. Marriage Caterers (where the proprietor could possibly be a fan of Captain Vijayakanth), we have today amongst us, the likes of La Fest Catering and Food Swing. And the change doesn’t stop with the names, but also with what they have to offer.

And recently, when I had to recommend a caterer for a family function, I got the contact of La Fest Catering from my friend, at whose wedding, I had nearly collapsed after having too much of delicious food. As the couple were international travellers and great foodies, they had placed the order for a menu which was a mish mash of specialties from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat and even China (!) for their fairly private wedding celebration with just 75 invitees. La Fest can be contacted at spsinglafest@hotmail. com or 044-65196682 / 9840098865 or New no.5, Old no.1, 5th street, Shakti Nagar, Choolaimedu, Chennai 600094 not just for weddings but for other occasions like birthday parties, corporate get-togethers, high tea and cocktail parties too.

Another memorable wedding that I attended was my Iyer friend tying the knot with his Bengali girlfriend. On the night of reception, we fell in love with this charming girl and their awesome Bengali food. The menu consisted of pulao (the authentic Bengali fried rice), Chingri macher malaikary (a preparation of prawn in mustard), alu dum (a preparation of potato), macher chop (Fish chop), chingrir cutlet (Prawn cutlet), begun bhaja (Fried brinjal), doi mach (Fish in curd) and many more. And desserts like khaja, nimki, kheer, rabri and sandesh just left our taste buds pampered royally. When I enquired about the caterer I was told to contact Sai Shankar of Saligrammam. And you can imagine my delight when I found the same caterer at a distant cousin’s engagement party. My joy knew no bounds when I saw those dhoklas , khakras, kachoris, basundhi and shrikhand. There are several other recommended caterers in the city like Buhari Biriyani Feasto, Annai Catering Service, C. Kesavan Catering and Abirami Caterers in various parts of the city like Egmore, Mylapore and Thiruvanmiyur. Also, apart from such independent caterers, let us not forget that we have other options in the form of HSB, Sangeetha and hotels like the GRT Grand Days,Taj Fisherman’s Cove and even Dakshin Chitra, where a wealthy friend of mine could afford to have his sister’s wedding reception and marriage respectively. I wished, “God bless the couple and the caterer!” - Shruti K M

Did you know?

It is believed that if an unmarried person sleeps with a piece of a wedding cake under their pillow, they will dream of their future spouse. In Bermuda, it’s common to have a small cedar sapling atop a wedding cake. This symbolises the growing love the couple nurture for each other.

Look Out for fake ISI mark It is estimated that nearly 10-30 per cent of the consumer goods market is accounted for by fake products. You can be taken for a ride if you are not careful.

e all know that standards are formulated to ensure desirable characteristics of products and services such as quality, safety and efficiency at an economical cost. When a product is certified as conforming to the specified standards, we regard it as a quality product and worth the price fixed for it. With a view to enforcing standards for different products according to international specifications, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS was previously known as Indian Standards Institution) was set up after the enactment of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986. Under a product certification scheme, BIS has till date granted more than 30,000 licences to manufacturers in different sectors. The certification entitles licensees to use the ISI Mark, which is considered the symbol of quality in India.

Act, Atomic Energy Regulation Board, Environment Protection Act, The Infant Milk Substitutes, Feeding Bottles and Infant Food Act. Some of the items brought under mandatory certification are LPG cylinders, milk powder, condensed milk, cereal food for infant, clinical thermometers, packaged drinking water and natural mineral water, electrical iron, immersion water heater, cables, switches, bulbs, circuit breakers, energy meters, dry batteries, steel tubes, oil pressure stoves, X-ray equipment, plastic feeding bottles, diesel engine, cement and steel and steel products (altogether a total of 17 items). In spite of periodic inspection by the authorities, the misuse of the ISI Mark is on the rise due to the growing demand of quality products. Sub-standard products using fake ISI Mark sneak in quietly and pass off as genuine items and the unwary consumer suffers. Nearly 10-30 per cent of the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) market is accounted for by fake products. Counterfeits account for a revenue loss of Rs 50-80 billion annually

to the manufacturer and the government. Also, 10 per cent of all major soft drinks sold are spurious, while 10-30 per cent of cosmetics and packaged food are counterfeits, according to a recent media survey. Many consumer activists have been suggesting that manufacturers should use packaging in such a way that does not lend itself easily to duplication or re-use. We are supposed to destroy plastic bottles containing soft drinks and water after use, but how many of us do that? In some shops you will find bottled water with broken seals. These are old ones collected and re-used by those in the ‘duplication business’. If the pre-packed items carry toll-free numbers, a consumer can call and check, in case of doubt, the genuineness of a product.

INFORM BIS WHEN IN DOUBT Now, have you ever been a victim of fake ISI product and how have you reacted when you found out? BIS wants to curb this menace and expects the consumer to help in identifying unscrupulous people.

Simply Sameera S

l i g h t . c a m e r a . a c t i o n

he’s the hot Bollywood babe who’s making waves in our own Tollywood now. After the super-hit ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ with Suriya, she’s now shooting with ‘Thala’ Ajit for Sivaji Production’s ‘Asal’. We get talking with the dashing Sameera Reddy who shares her gyan on movies and life. What made you choose a film like ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ for your Tamil debut?

to do films for their quality and don’t believe in notching up numbers. I am excited about Nagesh Kukunoor’s ‘Yeh Hosla’. It’s not a glam look unlike my other films. I have got great co-actors like Tanuja and Tanvi Azmi and it was amazing working with them. ‘Red Alert’ and ‘De Dhana Dhan’ are the other films I am in. So, how is the Chennai experience?

I had heard a lot about Gautham Menon and his work. I became a huge fan after watching his ‘Kaakka Kaakka’. So when a chance to work with him came along, I just went for it. I knew there would be three heroines with Ramya and Simran also in there, but I didn’t want to miss this opportunity. And here I am! How is ‘Asal’ shaping up? Well, it’s been great so far! We have been shooting in Switzerland, Lyons, Paris, the Far East and now, Chennai. It’s a really stylish film. I play the role of an Attache at the Embassy in Paris. And Ajith is a man on mission! How is it working with Ajith? He’s simply superb. He put me at ease during the shoot and even helped me with tips in the emotional scenes. His humility is amazing though he’s such a big star. Currently, we have been shooting a song sequence in a studio here with dance master Ganesh Acharya. It’s a wonderful experience being a part of this team with director Saran and Sivaji Productions.

It’s been great. I have personal friends in this town and I like to stay with them whenever I come down. Thanks to ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’, I have been coming here for the past two years. I love the food and the people and my friends really pamper me, so what more can I ask for? What do you do in your free time after shooting in Chennai? Well, some of my friends have beach houses and have been inviting me for parties there. If I can grab the time after the shoot I am planning to party but it’s been difficult so far. I am not much of a night bird, so, I haven’t really seen the nightclubs out here, though I’ve heard there is a rocking night life here! - Rinku Gupta

How happy are you with your career in Bollywood? So far, I am just ten films old there and I am happy with the pace I am maintaining. I want
