Cover Letter The following is an assessment of the leadership skills I have and the analysis of the leadership skills I might lack or need to work harder on strengthening. But before we get started, I would like to take the time to thank those worthy of this great accomplishment. First and foremost, Allah All-Mighty, for giving me the chance to improve myself and surrounding me with people that support and believe in me. After the One-and-only, I would like to thank my sister, Sarah for investing in me and believing in me although I wasn't the best person or her only choice. Despite all my shortcomings, she stood by me as a mother, father and sister. I would also like to thank my wife, Mawaddah, for her patience and belief in my abilities to better myself and for standing by me in the hardest of times and situations. Last but never the least my teacher, Ali, for giving me so much of his precious time and knowledge. Thank you all for being there for me and standing by my side. I pray that Allah bless you all for all that you have done for me.

Sincerely,

Othman M. Buraik

Chapter One

Leadership Style

3

My Leadership Style Although everyone tends to occasionally switch his/her leadership style depending on the situation in hand, I'm more of the "Participative Leader". I've been working as a manager in different jobs in Jordan ever since I came to Jordan in 2005 and little have I seen proper leadership skills here. Before coming to Jordan I was working for a company in the United States. My manager was a great influence to me as was Michael, the co-CEO of the company. Michael was the Participative Leader I always wanted to be. It was he who once told me, "If you want your employees to worry about your work issues, you have to worry about their personal issues." Now that was a fair deal to me. So I adopted the habit of asking my employees' opinion before making my decision in all the companies I have worked for. In 2005 I worked for a short time with Safeway as a supervisor for the second floor at the 7 th Circle branch in Amman, Jordan. I would often gather my fellow employees and ask them what they thought was the best way to display a new item, or where to replace an item that was removed from the special offer section. That helped me in many ways especially the fact that all the employees that were under me loved working with me. On the other hand, my managers didn't always have the same feeling towards me. Many of them felt me as a threat to their career. I soon found a better job and resigned from that position. The company I worked for the most in Jordan was my next job, Batshon Home Fashion, a local boutique home accessories and fashion company. The co-owner, Kamal Batshon was actually my customer is Safeway and had come up to me and offered me a job at his company as a store manager—something I was only dreaming of but never thought would come to me. Although I had less employees working under me at this job, I found myself in my work and started to work harder and harder to understand the different materials and items and what made a towel "good" or "great". Soon enough I was the Brand manager for all three stores and the Executive Manager for a new concept called "H&H" of "Hotel & Hospitality". Now I had a huge group of employees and even more work. So again, I used this great leadership skill and started to consult my employees on the finest details since most of them were older than me in this job. The fruit of consulting, you ask? H&H was soon the most popular brand of linen in the kingdom holding a whopping 70% of the local market including Aqaba, Petra, Irbid and the Capital, Amman. The list goes on and on, but what I would like to say, is that "ten minds are better than one". Sometimes leaders fail to see the simplest of details sending them into an endless descending spiral of emotions, conflicts, misunderstanding and misinterpretations all at the price of his/her job. Whereas when a leader puts away a little bit of his/her "pride" and consults his/her employees, they all feel privileged and look for those small details so as to prove to the leader that they were worthy of his/her trust and loyalty—thus giving him/her their loyalty in return. In my opinion, it's a win-win situation. You get the job done properly, and all your employees love you and want to work with you.

Chapter Three

Comparison

11

Comparison Between My Initial Opinion and Post-Assessment Test

In my initial opinion of my leadership style, I mentioned that I was a Participative Leader. After completing the Second Leadership Assessment test, I found the following: 1- I have good communicational skills with my group or team, but on the other hand, I need to improve my civic related communications and awareness. 2- I need to work on my political awareness. 3- I need to be more aware of the sensitivity of a situation and be able to predict future possible complications and situations. This indicates that I need to be more aware of my indirect surroundings and try to "look" a bit farther away from my comfort zone.

Final Summary

17

Final Summary They say that a human usually can't see his/her own mistakes. This project has proved that to me in many stages. Please observe the following: 1- In the first stage of this project, I presumed myself to be a great leader and the "Mr. Perfect" for any job—just give it to me and watch how the pros do it—type of leader. 2- At the second stage, I found out that I had a few things that could not be underestimated, but rather, must be addressed before they place me in a very hard situation. 3- By stage three, I was on the road to repairing these mistakes. 4- Last but not least, stage four, made me understand the reason I was making these mistakes, thus finding the proper way to solve them. This project proves to me that I need to slow down without the loss of self-confidence. I need to open my eyes and be aware that sometimes indirect connections with a decision could affect the outcome, thus, harm me in my professional and/or personal life. Therefore, I must think twice and study issues from every prospective to find the best solution for the issue in hand.
