To be a Christ-centred family that loves and serves one another with joy and humility

- REV FR J J FENELON Pilgrimage – A Spiritual encounter with God A pilgrimage is a journey of moral or spiritual significance. Generally, it is a journey to a shrine of importance to a person's beliefs and faith, the place of birth or death of founders or saints, to locations where miracles were performed or witnessed, or locations where a holy person or visionary is said to have lived. Such sites may be commemorated with shrines or temples that devotees are encouraged to visit for their own spiritual benefit. A person who makes such a journey is called a pilgrim. I have been on several pilgrimages and have been blessed to celebrate Masses at the various Holy Shrines and spend time in prayer and meditation, which in itself has been a tremendous privilege. But what has really edified me has been the faith of the many ordinary people who brave the cold wind, rain or heat, attending Masses, praying the Rosary, meditating on the Stations of the Cross, going for the Holy Bath(Lourdes) and other spiritual activities. Such simplicity and humility of faith even touched one of the pilgrims, a non-Catholic Christian, during my recent pilgrimage. He was so overwhelmed by the faith of the ordinary people. He has developed a more favorable attitude towards the Catholic faith and feels closer to God because of this experience. But not everyone can have the time or money to make such a pilgrimage. Does that mean we cannot have a deep spiritual encounter with God? We can have a deep experience of God locally at a retreat, in the Mass or during time of prayer if we are open and surrender ourselves to Him without reservation. Jn.14:23 –“Anyone who loves me and keeps my word, my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make our home in him”. Our “heart” is this “home”. God dwells deep within us. In the quietness of our adoration room we can have this deep spiritual encounter with God. “Come and see” (Jn.1:39). Come and be a pilgrim.

Until we have fallen in love with Jesus and the gospel, are so inspired by the Good News proclaimed by the Lord, and find hope, meaning and purpose, the gospel cannot be proclaimed with joy and excitement as did the first disciples who encountered the Risen Lord. May our hearts burn like the disciples while on the road to Emmaus, always conscious that joy cannot be contained and that goodness always spreads. Every authentic experience of truth and goodness seeks by its nature to grow within us. Let us heed the words of Jesus Himself and reach out to others to seek their good and be missionaries bearing the Good News with joy, kindness, patience and love. May the Good News burn within our hearts as we seek to spread the goodness of the gospel to all whom we encounter! (Archbishop William Goh)
