Our home!

Welcome to Markaryd It’s where we live. Where we work. Where we relax and enjoy life. With lakes and forests close at hand, it’s easy to lead a happy, healthy life. There’s so much to be inspired by, so much to do. We shop locally because local retailers offer the best service. The creativity of our local entrepreneurs provides the basis for a fantastic labour market and a vibrant local community. And in our leisure time we like to stay active. Our many clubs and associations offer an impressive array of activities for young and old alike. Here it’s simple to listen to a concert, take a cycle ride or simply relax in tranquil surroundings. In short, life is good in and around Markaryd! Welcome to Markaryd – our home.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST IN AND AROUND MARKARYD? We asked a number of friendly Markaryd residents that question. It’s logical to assume that “if I live here, I feel at home”, but we wanted to find out what they like best about their municipality. What makes them feel at home? What tips do they have to share with all those who have yet to discover how great life in Markaryd really is.

MÄRTA ARVIDSSON: I like all the lakes and our lovely natural surroundings. We’ve a nice indoor pool, too, and everything is close at hand – churches, shops and so on. MY TIP: Take a walk around the ponds in Södergård Park in the heart of Markaryd.

ALGOT BÄCKMAN: There are big playgrounds to play in and a big indoor swimming pool, as well.

ANNA HOGENFÄLT: As a newcomer I was impressed by the warm welcome and how soon I was made to feel part of the community. There’s fresh air, peace and quiet – and no queues or traffic jams. That’s a big plus compared to city life. MY TIP: Sånna Gård Farm – when the sheep are put out to pasture.

6

OLA BRANDT: I love living in Strömsnäsbruk village. Fresh air, clear water and just a 100-metre walk from my front door in a residential area to the forest. I love my job that lets me experience the creativity of children and young people. And I love coming home to a haven of peace and quiet after a day in the city or a long trip away. MY TIP: Don’t miss the fishing! Almost all our lakes offer fantastic opportunities for everyone who enjoys fishing.

LINNEA FAGER : Markaryd has so many activities to choose from: bowling, padel, football, swimming – you name it! Travel within the municipality is easy. I don’t need to go further afield. We have virtually everything we need right here. MY TIP: The padel facilities here are truly outstanding with several indoor and outdoor courts.

HENRIK HELLSTRÖM: I enjoy living in the country yet still being able to quickly get to the centre of Markaryd. I like being close to family and friends, and when I’m out and about it’s nice to almost always meet someone I know and can chat to. MY TIP: I tell everyone: Make use of all the things we have! Shop here, eat here and explore your local surroundings.

Activities ...

for all interests and ages Whether you come just for a day out or stay a little longer, you’re sure to find something that suits your interests. Markaryd Municipality has lots of activities for young and old alike, both in the villages and in the countryside.

CULTURAL CENTRE, LIBRARY & CINEMA Kulturhuset in the centre of Markaryd is a focal point for all forms of culture. There is something for just about everyone in the cultural centre’s varied programme of lectures, movie screenings, concerts, exhibitions, etc. The premises also house a library with plenty to interest bookworms of all ages.

SWIMMING INDOORS & OUT Hannabadet indoor swimming pool in Markaryd has something for everyone – a play area, a 25-metre pool, water slide, sauna and steam sauna. For those who prefer to swim outdoors there are three open-air pools at Strömsnäsbadet. There are bathing sites beside some of the lakes in the municipality, such as Klintabadet by Lake Hammarsjön, and you can also swim in Lake Getesjön and Hannabadsjön.

8

PADEL, THE NEW RACKET SPORT Padel is the popular new sport that has taken Sweden by storm in recent years. Since 2018 Markaryd has two outdoor courts adjacent to the bowling alley in the centre of Markaryd, and an indoor facility with three courts close to the E4 motorway.

CANOEING With the 150-kilometre Laganleden canoe route just around the corner it’s simple to explore and experience the countryside by canoe or kayak – all the way to the west coast, the Kattegatt and back. Markaryd’s canoe centre, Sydsvensk kanotleasing, is based in Oshult.

MARKED TRAILS/WALKS Marked trails through the deep forests follow close to the shores of lakes such as Byasjön and Lokasjön. There are several paths and walking trails ranging from one to six kilometres in length. You’ll also find information signs, barbecue facilities and windbreaks along the trails.

TRARYDS SKANS ZOO Animal lovers are sure to enjoy a visit to Traryd in the north of the municipality. There’s a small zoo there in a pleasant rustic setting with African dwarf goats, Gute sheep from Gotland, rabbits, peacocks and other animals as well. There are also barbecue facilities and trails around the nearby lake.

FISHING Fishing is allowed in many of Markaryd’s lakes and rivers, including Lagan. Please remember, however, that you need a permit. This can be purchased over the counter at the COOP store in central Markaryd, the Tourist Office at the station, or online at www.ifiske.se. CYCLING, CULTURE AND COUNTRYSIDE For railway enthusiasts Strömsnäsbruk Engine Sheds offer not only a chance to stroll around the museum, but also to cycle on a rail-inspection trolley – an eco-friendly way to explore the surrounding countryside.

ELK SAFARI Does the idea of close encounters with big, wild animals excite you? If so, take a trip to remember through the Swedish forests at Smålandet Moose Safari Park.

Time-honoured furniture design Markaryd played a key role in twentieth-century Swedish furniture design. Today locally based companies continue to supply the world with beautiful and elegant furnishings. Forests mean good access to timber for producing wooden furnishings. From the mid-1800s onwards the furniture industry grew rapidly in this part of Sweden. Over the years numerous cabinet-makers and furniture factories have found a home in and around Markaryd. Today one of Markaryd’s most successful furniture companies is Johanson Design, run by brothers Paul and Dan Johanson. The company is now one of the leading brands in the Swedish and European furniture industry and works with some of Europe’s top furniture designers. Almost all manufacturing takes place in Markaryd from where products are exported to some 60

10

countries. Many find a home in public spaces such as restaurants, night clubs and TV studios, or on ferries and in churches. The Swedish designer whose work is most in vogue today is probably Hans-Agne Jakobsson. He qualified as a furniture-maker at the age of just 18 and then studied in Gothenburg to become an interior architect before working as an industrial designer at General Motors. In his spare time he designed and experimented with light fixtures. He was, however. unable to interest anyone in producing his designs, so he started manufacturing his own lamps in metal and wood in Markaryd in 1951.

His fame peaked in Sweden and internationally in the 1950s and 60s, when his lamps featured in

numerous international competitions. Although no longer in production, his lamps remain hugely popular among collectors and fetch sky-high prices at auctions.

HANS-

Hans-Agne Jakobsson is often called “the master of soft lighting”. His designs always sought to avoid glaring bulbs, but his famous lamello lamps, made of thin slices of veneer, were the result of pure happenstance. While working on shop window decorations in Markaryd one Christmas, he used sheets of veneer to temporarily screen a couple of glaring light bulbs. When someone came into the shop and asked to buy the arrangement, Hans-Agne realised the potential popularity of this concept – and soon his wood veneer lamps were on sale all over the world.

Antiques –

and flea market bargains In the summer the area in and around Markaryd is transformed into an El Dorado of antiques and potential bargains with a story to tell. That’s when the flea markets and antique dealers open their doors to welcome serious collectors and curious passers-by from near and far. It makes Markaryd and its surroundings the ideal summer destination for browsers and bargain hunters. It’s also a sustainable and eco-friendly way to shop, and with so many good deals to be made, it’s a paradise for those with the patience to sift through all that’s on offer. You’ll find a list of the best local flea markets and antique dealers on the following page.
