SPRING SUMMER COLLECTION TWO THOUSAND AND TWELVE

SPRING SUMMER COLLECTION TWO THOUSAND AND TWELVE

Lalesso is the creation of designers Olivia Kennaway and Alice Heusser who after a holiday to Lamu Island off the north coast of Kenya were inspired to harness the cultural beauty of the East African ‘khanga’ or ‘lesso’ fabric and thus saw the birth of Lalesso .

Lalesso, as well as many other international designers, now uses SOKO for all their garment production. www.soko-kenya.com Lalesso also uses the creative talent of Kenyan artisans in many aspects of the designs, incorporating various design initiatives and supporting them in doing so. These include beaded bracelets on the swing tags,

BY JENNIFER KINNEAR

Renowned Irish Jewellery designer Jennifer Kinnear has been sourcing inspiration from her travels in Africa, Europe and her water loving lifestyle for many years. A first time collaboration for both JK and Lalesso sees this imaginative jewellery collection transform the creative ideals of both design mind powers into a unique explosion of artistic treasures. The collection was inspired by the textured layers of Africa’s terrain, the twists and turns that are abundant in Africa’s unpredictable day-to-day living and the contrast of the raw cultural aesthetics combined with the digtial era that the continent is entering into. The collection follows closely in line with Lalesso’s ideals of supporting the creative talent of Kenyans and promoting employment and boosting their standard of living. All design elements within the collection are handmade and assembled harnessing a variety of skills that Kenyans boast. The assembly workshop where the collection is made supports displaced citizens who have struggled with drug addiction, grew up as orphans or are suffering from starvation. This workshop aims to give them a place in society that will not only make them feel safe but provide a supportive community that will allow them to move out of their struggle with poverty.
