Analysis of Horror Character: Frederick Charles ‘’Freddy’’ Krueger is a fictional character and is the villain and primary antagonist in the A nightmare on Elm Street film series. He appears as a disfigured serial killer who uses his signature glove with razors attached in order to kill his victims, in their dreams which will cause their death in the real world as well. However when Krueger is put into the real world he has normal human vulnerability. This iconic character was created by Wes Craven and was primarily portrayed by Robert Englund his first appearance being in 1984, but in 2010 and re make of the classic film series was made in which starred Academy Award-nominee Jackie Earle Hayley. Freddy is often known for being a vengeful character that attacks his victims from their own dreams. He is commonly recognized and identified by his brunt, disfigured face, red and dark green stripped sweat shirt, a brown fedora hat and his trademark metal clawed brown leather glove on his right hand. Wizard magazine have rated Freddy as the 14th greatest villain of all time, the British television channel sky2 ranked him 8th, and then American film institute ranked him 40th on its ‘’AFI’S 100 Years... 100 Heroes and Villains’’. Robert Englund has stated he feels Freddy represents neglected, and particularly suffered by children, also the character may broadly been know for representing subconscious fears. A nightmare on Elm Street is an American franchise which includes seven slasher movies, one re-make, and one cross-over film (Freddy vs Jason), comic books, a television show and novels. The franchise begins with a series of films which were created by Wes Craven, based on the fictional character Freddy Krueger. The films collectively have grossed over $455 million at the box-office worldwide.
