7 Day Media Fast

all me cynical, but I don’t believe everything I see. In these days when urban legends are served up daily to my in-box, blogs offer every imaginable opinion, and anyone with photoshop can create digital images that look real— most of what I see and read each day I take with a grain of salt.

How do we discern what is true from what is false? The apostle Paul says “do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” The writer to the Hebrews says “the word of God is…sharper than any two edged sword…it discerns the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” We stop being conformed to the world’s thinking when we reduce our worldly input, particularly our consumption of spiritually empty media. And we renew our minds when we meditate on that which is true—God’s word. There is no substitute for spending “face time” with God. If you aren’t reading God’s word daily, I encourage you to begin today--just 5 minutes of uninterrupted time each day with the Scriptures will get you started. In addition you can make the most of your As I cut down the noise commute time in the car or when you are working around the house level, I heard God’s word by listening to God’s spoken word— more clearly and I sensed whether on the radio or Bible teachHis peace and love in a ings tapes, CDs or on your ipod.

I recently returned from a missions normal media-saturated life. trip to India. During those 11 days I had no access to internet, television or (heaven forbid!) radio. While I found the experience to be spiritually enriching for many reasons, I think one of the contributing factors was I “fasted” from media. As I cut down the noise level, I heard God’s word more clearly and I sensed His peace and love in a deeper way than in my normal media-saturated life. So I offer you this challenge: Take a 7 day media fast—no television, no aimless internet surfing, no secular radio, no secular music on your mp3 player. You will be amazed at the results. Here are some of the benefits God promises when you meditate on His word: • revival of your soul • wisdom • joy in your heart • a clear vision of God • success in whatever you do (Psalm 19:7-8, Psalm 1: 3). What t.v. show, movie, popular song or internet blog can offer you that? Thanks for listening to

Questions for Oprah and Today’s New Age Thinkers...

[ ARTICLE ] have a few questions - but they are not about whether

Oprah Winfrey, Eckhart Tolle or Marianne Williamson are good, smart and nice people. I’m sure they are. My concern is about the ideas they hold - since good, smart, nice people can hold false beliefs and be wrong about all kinds of things. Sometimes, even the most important things.

I have questions about their worldview. A worldview is made up of the answers we give to life’s most fundamental and profound questions. It includes the answers we give to questions of philosophy, religion, ethics and theology. And they are questions that have been asked and answered by every culture in world history. When comparing and contrasting religions, worldview categories are the most basic level of inquiry. If you know a person’s worldview, you know a whole lot about them. Oftentimes, you even know more about their thinking processes than they do. Right now, Oprah is co-teaching an online class with author Eckhart Tolle, based upon her current Book of the Month, his “A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose.” And, Oprah’s promoting a daily radio show on her XM channel featuring Marianne Williamson teaching from “A Course in Miracles.” Both Tolle and Williamson are New Age thinkers. Oprah says she’s a Christian—arguing that she can reconcile “her” Christianity with what they’re teaching. If she’s a Christian, she’s an ignorant one, because Christianity is incompatible with New Age thought. Here’s how the two opposing worldviews, Christianity (C), and New Age (NA), answer some of the most basic worldview questions. The New Age answers are ones that would be commonly held, though certainly not universal, as the belief system is loose, eclectic and unique to each individual adherent. 1. Why is there something rather than nothing? Christianity (C): God created the universe at the moment of the beginning of time, matter and space. Big Bang cosmology and all modern science affirms this. New Age (NA): The universe is beginning-less, endless, eternal. 2. Does God exist?—and is He personal? C: Yes, God is personal, and the Bible teaches God is three persons sharing one essence, what Christians refer to as the Trinity. More specifically, God is tri-personal. 07

NA: Yes and No. Yes, God is an impersonal force that exhaustively fills every atom of the eternal universe: All is God, God is all, God is all of us and God is each of us. No, there is no personal creator called God who is outside of time, matter and space. 3. Who am I? C: A creation of God. NA: God. 4. How did I get here? C: God created man with moral freedom and invited him to join the presence of the Trinity. But man exercised his freedom in rebellion to God, and now only through the work of the incarnate God and second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ, can that severed relationship be restored. NA: Through the infinite process of karma. As God, you are eternal, and have been reincarnating from object to object for trillions of years, and when you ultimately achieve enlightenment, and remember that you are God, you will then lose your individual sense of self and consciousness and become One with the One. (Remember, there is no personal God. God is a force. You must return to being a force.) 5. Why am I here? C: The Westminster Catechism answers this question beautifully: The chief end of man is “to glorify God and enjoy him forever.” I am called to make a decision with eternal consequences: either accept or reject God’s offer of salvation in Jesus Christ. I am also called to help others make a correct choice; to advance the true, the good, and the beautiful; to fight evil and injustice; to work with God at reconciling the But man exercised his freedom world to Himself. in rebellion to God, and now only NA: To pay off previous karmic debt gathered over trillions of through the work of the incaryears. nate God and second person of 6. What is the meaning of life? C: To glorify God. NA: To achieve enlightenment.

the Trinity, Jesus Christ, can that severed relationship be restored.

7. What is the true, the good, and the beautiful? C: God—and his goodness can be seen through his creation. NA: Since there is no distinction between creator and creation, there can be no distinctions between true-false, good-bad, right-wrong, ugly-beautiful, or pain-pleasure. 8. What is the best life? C: A life in the full presence of God. NA: The life immediately before enlightenment, since you will no longer exist as a person once you remember you are God.

9. Who is the best man? C: Jesus Christ, the Man who never sinned. NA: “Best” is a nonsensical moral category. 10. Why is there evil, pain, suffering, and injustice? C: The Fall. Man exercised his freedom in rebellion to God and these are the consequences. NA: People are paying off their karmic debt. As God, we are responsible for the reality we create for ourselves through our thinking and choices. If we are suffering, it is because we are choosing to suffer. If we think differently we can alter the external world and create our own reality. 11. Why do bad things happen to good people? C: We live in a fallen world with moral freedom. Evil and sin exist. Men hurt themselves intentionally and accidentally. Our hope is only in God who is able to bring good out of evil. NA: Karma. Karma and reincarnation have all kinds of fatal logical problems. Who started karma and reincarnation and why? Who decides what behavior gets rewarded and what gets punished, especially since there are no moral categories? How can there be a “who” to all this when God is a “what,” an impersonal force like gravity? How can an impersonal force help you in your relationships, heal your hurts, illnesses and wounds, help with your addictions and bad habits, lead you to confront social evils, poverty, crime, corruption, broken families, broken hearts? 12. Will good or evil ultimately triumph? C: The resurrection of Jesus proves that good ultimately triumphs over evil. NA: These are only apparent moral categories, they don’t really exist. 13. Is there life after death? C: Yes! In either heaven or hell. Our destination is based on our response to the person and work of Christ. NA: Yes and No. Yes, in that you may have trillions of more reincarnated bodies to inhabit as you pay off your karmic debt before reaching enlightenment. No, in that once you’re enlightened, you will cease to exist, since you will have remembered you’re really an impersonal force that New Age thinkers call “God.” The New Age Movement is intellectually and spiritually bankrupt. But, it is making Tolle and Williamson—and especially Oprah—a whole bunch of money. Speaking the Unspeakable: Seven Suggestions for Better Intimacy

[ ARTICLE ] o you remember the day of President Kennedy’s assassination? I can describe the room. The people. The weather. It was like being struck repeatedly with an emotional sledgehammer that pounded the spikes of grief, fear, and confusion into a 14-yearold boy’s heart. I’ll never forget that day.

Twenty-five years later another day brought news that pierced my heart. No visible bullet was fired. No assassin at whom to vent my anger. There was only the word that a hero of mine had fallen. His spiritual influence had been tarnished by adultery. I was nauseated when the news came, for I had drunk deeply from the well of his writings, preaching, and life. I’ve done a lot of thinking since then. I’ve pondered the tragedy to his ministry. I’ve winced at the shame to him, his family, and the name of Christ. I’ve asked myself, “How many like him must fall before we who are Christians come out of our sanctified closets and admit that sexual temptation does exist?” I’ve grappled over the growing number of Christians who’ve lost their marriages, families, and ministries due to sexual infidelity. As a result, I have determined that we need to start asking one another

some tough questions. Like a man asking another man, “Are you being the leader of your family and taking care of your wife’s needs-spiritually?” “Emotionally?” “Sexually?” “Are you being faithful sexually to your wife?” “Are you being faithful mentally?” “Are you reading ‘stuff’ you shouldn’t?” And wife to wife, “Are you sending your husband into the world hungry, with his sexual needs unmet?” “Are you a ‘marriage bed magnet’ that causes him to daydream at work about you!?” I’ve concluded that it’s time we stop assuming we are all beyond temptation and start exhorting husbands and wives to pay more attention to taking care of one another’s physical needs. But for some, any open admission about the sexual dimension of life is strictly taboo. I love to quote Dr. Howard Hendricks’ powerful statement about sex, “We should not be ashamed to discuss that which God was not ashamed to create.” If God isn’t blushing about what takes place in our bedrooms, then why are we? Why is it that many of us feel so uncomfortable with talking about sex? Why are we so afraid of this God-created portion of our personhood? Is it because we feel so uncomfortable with our sexuality?

Here are seven exhortations to affair proof your marriage: 1. Make your marriage bed your priority. Exhaustion is the great zapper of passion. Our already-tired-blood is further thinned by feverish paced and packed schedules. The result is we have little time and energy to share, give, or receive. Fatigue does not fuel passion. Practically, some couples could go their own independent way indefinitely, denying their need of one another. But God gave us sex as a drive to merge, to force us out of our isolation. Am I suggesting that you should write “sex” down on your calendar? I’ll let you decide. But some who read this don’t need a tablespoon of Geritol-you just need to say NO to some good things and go to bed early-say about 8:00 p.m. or so. 2. Talk together about what pleases one another. I once spoke to a group of wives whose husbands are in the ministry. During the message I took a few minutes to address the subject of intimacy and how so many men bomb out of the ministry because of sexual sin. Afterwards, a young wife came up to tell me about a conversation that she had had with her husband. As they were driving home after he had spoken at church one night, she turned to him and asked, “Sweetheart, what do you want me to do that would help you become a great man of God?” There was a moment of contemplative silence, then his reply came, “When I come home from work, meet me at the door with no clothes on!!!” She was dumb-founded! Was he being silly or serious? She has since concluded that HE WAS VERY SERIOUS!!!

3. We need to fan the flames (or flickers) of romance. Barbara and I have a small table in our bedroom set with dishes for special evenings. (No, our bedroom isn’t that big, it’s just that crowded!) When our children were at home, we put them to bed with a book or rented a Walt Disney movie as we shared a candlelight dinner, alone. We fan the flames by re-introducing ourselves and talking. What setting enables your love for your mate to spark or even ignite? Feed the flames-don’t starve them. 4. We need to have fun with one another but not at the expense of the other person. Some are so serious about “the objective” that we’ve lost the fun of the relationship. Grins, giggles, and laughter ought to drift out of our bedrooms occasionally. (So what if the kids find out-it’ll be good for them to know that Mom and Dad have fun in bed!)

Snap out of the ruts, there are a lot The Lord God who created of classy lingerie stores today - why 40,000 different kinds of butnot have fun shopping together? terflies never intended that Christians ought to be their best our marriage bed become boring! But some are-especially in customers-our God created the sexual dimension of our lives! what they wear to bed!!! Men really aren’t excluded here, but I’ve had some tell me privately that they’d like to bum some of the burlap sacks their wives sleep in. Sure you may get cold-maybe you’ll have to snuggle to stay warm! Snap out of the ruts, there are a lot of classy lingerie stores today-why not have fun shopping together? Christians ought to be their best customers-our God created the sexual dimension of our lives! 5. Add the element of surprise to your marriage bed. Why not take one of your lunch hours at work to add some sizzle and creativity to your marriage bed. Caution: If the sexual area of your marriage has been a struggle, then it might be good to ask permission before cooking up something you think is wonderful, but offensive to your spouse (Romans 15:1-7). 6. Be patient with your mate. Remember, the Christian life is the process of becoming like Christ. This area of married love and commitment demands that we are continually growing and learning about one another (see 1 Thessalonians 5:14-15). 7. Beware of bitterness. Perhaps nothing should be feared more than that of becoming resentful of your mate’s sexual drive or apparent lack of sexual appetite. Bitterness quenches the fires of romance. Keep short accounts and ask forgiveness when you fail or if you have become bitter (Ephesians 4:26-27). We love what Vonette Bright, wife of the founder of Campus Crusade for Christ said about sex, “It’s just as important to be filled with the Holy Spirit in bed as it is in witnessing to another about Jesus Christ.” And on another occasion she added, “If there’s a better way to make a cake, then I want to know it!” Why not pull the plug and turn out the lights early tonight?

Are Termites Eating Your Home?

12 Things You Need To Know To Protect Your Biggest Investment! Termite swarmers look similar to flying ants, except they have elongated bodies rather than separated body parts. They also have two pairs of wings. In Southern California, we deal mostly with two types: Subterranean and Drywood. Subterranean termites live within the ground and travel to the structure in mud tunnels. Drywoods live in the wood and produce small round pellets that resemble multi colored coffee grounds.

2.The Electro-gun is a hand-held device that emits 90,000 volts of electricity in order to treat Drywood termites. The termites then conduct the current because their bodies are 90% water. Wood, however, is not a good conductor of electricity. The electric current seeks the path of less resistance; therefore it enters the termite tunnels and shocks them. 3. The Microwave Treatment is similar to the microwave you have at home. It has been redesigned, however, to treat flat surfaces such as walls or wood beams. It cooks the termites and will treat one square foot area at a time. 4. Heat is a completely non-chemical process. It kills termites and sanitizes the treated area by raising temperature above 130 degrees. The entire process can take approximately about 4-8 hours and does not require leaving overnight or bagging food (fumigation does), nor does it damage roof tiles. According to the California 5. Borates are salt solutions that are formulated to penetrate through wood. They not only kill the termites but they help protect against future re-infestation and stay in the wood indefinitely.

Department of Consumer Affairs heat and fumigation are the only approved and recognized methods to kill drywood termites for “whole housetreatments.

6. Termidor is used for treating subterranean termites. It is not a repellent to the termites and is very effective because the termites do not know it is there. They take it back to the colony and it is transferred to the other termites as they groom each other. 7. The treatment cost will vary depending upon the size and accessibility of the structure, the type of termites you have and the extent of the infestation. We also need to know what type of termites you have and what method of treatment is required. These are factors that the inspector will be discussing with you and he can give you an exact cost at the time of the inspection.

8. All the non-chemical methods can control and kill termites. According to the California Department of Consumer Affairs heat and fumigation are the only approved and recognized methods to kill drywood termites for “whole house”treatments. Fumigation requires vacating the structure for several days and heat does not. (Local treatments may not eradicate undetected infestation.) 9. White spots in the wood are usually a form of fungus and not a sign of termites. If you point it out to your inspector, he will identify it for you and give you a recommendation to correct the problem. 10. A complete inspection on an average single family home usually takes an hour and includes all accessible areas including the attic and sub area. Be sure to make all areas accessible for inspection. 11. Termite swarmers are the flying reproductive termites that migrate and swarm to start new colonies. 12. The termites are swarming everywhere! What can I do? They swarm in bunches and usually lose their wings, and die without establishing new colonies or damaging the structure. There will be less each time they swarm until they empty their colony and stop. They can be cleaned up with a vacuum as they loose their ability to fly. It will be helpful to the technician if you point out any areas you see them swarm from. When was your last termite inspection? Life is Too Short… Dear KKLA family, Once in a while, in the busyness of life, we’re reminded of what really matters. Recently, here at Park Place Funding, we were sadly reminded of God’s encouragement to “redeem time.” There are two people who make Park Place Funding what is today, Mark and Tina Gallagher, the owners of the company. For 15 years, they have steadfastly seen our company as not just a mortgage business, but as a ministry to their friends, family, the body of Christ worldwide. They are the most generous and giving people I have had the pleasure of knowing. This sentiment is echoed throughout our offices. By living their faith they have not only changed the lives of thousands of radio listeners with our Strategic Loan Strategies, but they have changed our lives as well. I speak for our entire office of loan agents and support staff. Last week Mark and Tina suffered a terrible and tragic loss in their family. And now our “family” sees life a little differently, for we also lost a wonderful coworker. And the loss reverberates with a lingering sorrow. We have been reminded that our days on this earth are like a shadow (1 Chron. 29:15), and that we should be more mindful to number our days… and gain a heart of wisdom (Ps. 90:12). We have been abruptly reminded that life is too short to do anything that might hinder each and every relationship that we have. It is our prayer that God will bring beauty from ashes, as He so often does; that He might use us to share this perspective with every new client or prospective client that we meet. We dedicate ourselves more than ever to never gamble with our reputation or integrity, no matter how challenging this industry may be. Like Mark & Tina, we believe that all of our success and blessing comes first and foremost from the favor of God; then, from the relationships that we establish, foster, and keep until the day that our gracious God and Savior calls us to glory. We look forward to serving you and your family for many, many years to come.

You Can Live Beyond Headline Hysteria! By Jack Graham

Host of Powerpoint Radio heard weekdays at 10:00 am on 99.5FM KKLA

Even though there is panic in the world… there is peace in the heart of the believer.

tense about the future.

lot of people these days are wringing their hands about the future. And it’s easy to understand why. From the conflict in the Middle East and the war on terror…to the constant threat of natural disasters at home and abroad…to the increasing sexualization of our culture…even to skyrocketing gas prices…there’s plenty of evidence that these are troublesome and unsettling days. And as a result, many people are very

But I want you to know that you don’t have to walk around with headline hysteria. You don’t have to fret or worry about what the future holds because God has given you and me a clear picture of what the future will look like. Yes, we may face trials and tribulations and temptations in the here and now, but take heart! You and I have great hope as believers in Christ. One very vivid picture of this hope is found in the Old Testament book of Daniel. Now, some have said that Daniel is to the Old Testament what Revelation is to the New Testament. Both books are apocalyptic, meaning they unveil or 26 uncover messages regarding the future and the end times.

And in the second chapter of Daniel, we find one of the most remarkable prophecies in all of the Word of God. You probably remember the background story from your days in Sunday school. Daniel and his friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, had been taken along with other captives into the land of Babylon. There they were forced to learn the ways of the Babylonians and the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar. But while they were in Babylon, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood firm in their faith and purposed in their hearts not to defile themselves. And as a result, God honored them by elevating them to a place of prominence in King Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom. It was at this point that God gave Daniel the opportunity to interpret King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream…which was a prophecy of what the future held. Now, I don’t have the room here to unpack everything in Daniel’s interpretation of the king’s dream. But I do want to focus your attention on two things Daniel said in his interpretation that should encourage you today…no matter what you may be going through or how There is a God in heaven dark the future may look to you right now. who personally controls

every aspect of your life. So 1. There is a God in heaven who personlook to Him and trust Him! ally controls your life.

Daniel 2:28 says, “…there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days.” Do you see what Daniel is saying here? There is a God in heaven! I don’t care what you’re facing…whether it’s a marital crisis, a financial crisis, or a health crisis…there is a God in heaven who personally controls every aspect of your life. So look to Him and trust in Him! 2. There is a God in heaven who will forever rule and reign. Daniel 2:44 says, “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever….” Even though there is panic in the world…even though there is war and disaster and sickness and death…there is peace in the heart of the believer because we’ve read the final chapter. You know, there are two kinds of religion in the world today. One is spelled D-O and the other is spelled D-O-N-E. Do or done! Either your religion is one of do…do this if you want to be saved or keep this commandment in hopes you’ll be saved or do this religious exercise and perhaps you’ll be saved. Or it’s one of done…the finished work of Jesus upon the cross! Today, it’s my prayer that you will trust in Christ’s completed, finished work on the cross, and that you will take heart from the words of the prophet Daniel. As a believer, you have a God who personally cares about you and what you’re going through. And one day, you’ll rule and reign with Him forever!

The American Vision Story

“Revolutionizing the Window Industry one customer at a time.” We would like to take just a minute to share with you the beginnings of American Vision Windows. We are a family owned business that began with the sole purpose of revolutionizing the window installation industry. We began, just as you are now, as customers seeking information about something we had heard little about, “vinyl windows.” With a two story house full of aluminum windows, we were constantly battling drastic temperature differences between upstairs and downstairs. Also, with a new baby in the house, we were tired of always feeling a draft near his crib. Seeking a solution, we began to learn about the benefits of dual paned windows, like reduction in both noise and energy cost, and a more secure home. So, we embarked on a window buying adventure, just as you may be about to do.

Unfortunately, what should have been a pleasant and exciting experience, turned out to be nothing short of a stressful disaster. After three months of contractors showing up late at our house, or not showing up at all, having many calls avoided, and being lied to about everything from when our windows were going to be installed, to what kind of windows we were actually getting, we had become disgruntled customers. The only positive outcomes of our experience is that we did finally, end up with new dual paned windows, and eventually, a successful window sales and installation company committed to not letting others experience what we had. Many people are turning to dual paned energy efficient windows to reduce their energy bills. If you have old wood or aluminum windows and enjoy saving money and the feeling of a well insulated home as much as we do, then you may be in the market for new vinyl windows and doors. If you choose to give us the opportunity to beautify your home and save you money on energy costs, I am certain that your buying experience will be a positive one, because we truly care about improving the quality of your home.
