For people with petrol running through their veins Hanhart is harking back to its close association with motor racing in the 1960s and 1970s with the launch of three new chronographs from its Pioneer collection. The Racemaster GT, the Racemaster GTM and the Racemaster GTF, with their sporty, technology-inspired design, are the first models produced by the Swiss-German watch brand to feature watch cases made from HDSPro® steel, which is 100 times more scratch-resistant than conventional stainless steel.

L

egendary tracks, famous names and unforgettable racing cars – the early days of motor racing were characterised by a sense of adventure and something truly extraordinary. While fearless drivers revved up their engines and raced round and round the circuit, battling for position, team managers, engineers and race

directors would record their lap times. None of this would have been possible without mechanical stopwatches – specifically, mechanical stopwatches from Hanhart! Ever since the first stopwatch was produced in Hanhart’s workshops back in 1924, the Swiss-German watch brand

has been closely associated with motor racing. In homage to the fascinating, adrenaline-fuelled sport of motor racing, Hanhart is expanding its Pioneer collection with the launch of three new Racemaster mechanical chronographs. Right from the start of the design phase, it was decided that the look of these chronographs should be inspired by sporting technology. Their appearance should pay tribute to the design of vintage racing cars: dynamic, cool and daring. The result is a watch with an

eye-catching case and a distinctive leather strap in a racing design with a red lining. The dial is clearly reminiscent of early speedometer displays – thanks to its neat style, with luminous arrow-shaped hands, simple and perfectly readable Arabic numerals and applied hour index marks, coloured subdivisions into individual segments and Hanhart’s characteristic display format with two counters at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock, a tachymeter scale around the edge and the unconventional circular element in the middle. And, of course, it also features the hallmarks of Hanhart design – the asymmetrical button arrangement and the red reset button.

Watch cases made from stainless steel that is 100 times more scratch-resistant

Aside from its exceptional scratch resistance, this processed steel is also distinguished by its outstanding resistance to corrosion, which is comparable with any of the highest quality stainless steels available. Since the steel is not coated during the finishing process, the authentic look and feel of the material is retained and, moreover, there is no risk of chipping any layers of coating that have been applied. Last but not least, this steel does not contain any nickel, so watch cases made from this material do not pose any known allergy risk.

New chronograph in three different versions To introduce this new range, Hanhart is launching three Racemaster watches with cases measuring 45 millimetres in diameter. These models are differen tiated by the design of their movements

To keep the sporty, technology-inspired look of the Pioneer Racemaster watches in perfect condition for as long as possible, Hanhart is manufacturing the cases from an innovative kind of stainless steel. Hanhart is the first watch brand in the world to use this steel, which offers an ideal combination of hardness, resistance to corrosion and nickel-free composition. A special finishing process gives this steel its distinctive surface structure, which is at least three times tougher than before, resulting in a more than 100-fold, and thus more than 10,000%, improvement in scratch resistance. On the two-button Pioneer Racemaster GT chronograph, the small round display at 9 o’clock is not simply reserved for the small seconds, as would normally be the case; it also accommodates a practical 12-hour counter. This model thus remains true to the bicompax display format, yet it also features all the functions of a tricompax chronograph. The upper chronograph button, positioned asymmetrically in relation to the lug, is a striking feature that is unique to Hanhart. In order to achieve this arrangement, Hanhart integrates a spe cially designed lever into the case. This redirects the force from pressing the button located at 2 o’clock by the required number of millimetres.

Pioneer Racemaster GT

and dials, but all three have their own exclusively and elaborately converted automatic calibre. This makes it possible to position Hanhart’s characteristic 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock displays in an aesthetically harmonious arrangement right at the edge of the generously sized dial. The aesthetic appearance of the Racemaster models thus corresponds perfectly with the style of the Hanhart chronographs from the 1930s, which owed their distinctive design to the unusual 15.5-ligne size of the early manufacture calibre.

As a single-button chronograph, the P ioneer Racemaster GTM bis based on the years of experience accumulated by Hanhart in manufacturing this kind of timepiece. All the chronograph functions – start, stop and reset – are performed via the same button and they always follow strictly one after the other. Unlike its two-button counterpart, the seconds hand on this model cannot be resumed after it has been stopped; it invariably jumps back to its initial position the next time the button is pressed. The movement has therefore been slightly re-engineered: the lever which sits directly beneath the point where the button at 4 o’clock would normally be has no function, so a large shift lever is responsible for the third strike on the chronograph cam. This cam has also been modified so that it has an additional tooth on its lowest level, enabling the shift lever to control not two, but three positions.

As for the Pioneer Racemaster GTF, this model also features a flyback function. While on a conventional stopwatch one button controls the start and stop functions, another is used for setting the relevant hands to zero and an intermediate stop is required for a restart, this flyback mechanism makes it possible to simultaneously stop, reset and restart the chronograph by pressing a single button once. The chronograph hand thus returns to its starting position and immediately resumes its time measurements; there is no need to restart the watch after it has been reset. The colour scheme used for the dial reflects the colours of the legendary racing cars of the 1960s and 1970s: the anthracite-tinted middle section provides a strikingly contrasting backdrop for the bright red hands and is surrounded by a ring-shaped minutes scale, which is white on the Racemaster GT, light blue on the GTM and orange on the GTF. It is also worth taking a look at the back of the three new Pioneer Racemaster models: the closed case backs, as conventionally seen on instrument watches, are decorated with an elaborate engraving of a starter’s flag crossed with a chequered flag. •

“If it’s been tested at the

Nürburgring it’s sure to be a success!” The 1927 slogan “Jeder lobt, was Nürburgring erprobt!” (“If it’s been tested at the Nürburgring, it’s sure to be a success!”) can still be seen near the old drivers’ paddock at the Nürburgring and, even today, it has lost none of its relevance – not least when it comes to Hanhart’s stopwatches. Countless kilometres of test driving and motor racing on one of the world’s most challenging circuits not only set the standard for what is required of both man and machine, but also in terms of precise timekeeping. Günter Steckkönig, a Porsche engineer and an experienced test and racing driver, reminisces about the old days.

“F

rom the 1950s onwards, I learned at first hand just how demanding the Nürburgring can be for vehicles and drivers. As a test driver and engineer for Porsche, I was involved in testing and development at international racing circuits for many years.” As part of a well-established and professional team made up of driver Herbert Linge and various chassis engineers and mechanics, Günter Steckkönig’s main responsibilities included measuring and recording individual lap times when it came to testing the driving performance of the Porsche 550 Spyder on the Nürburgring’s “Nordschleife” (“Northern loop”) track. The aim of the tests was to optimise the technical characteristics of the car in order to achieve faster and faster lap times. Precise and accurate timekeeping was absolutely essential for Steckkönig’s work. “The mechanical stopwatch played an extremely impor tant role in the measuring process,” he

says, “but I could always rely on the watches from Hanhart!” The test drives on this challenging, 22.8-kilometre long track, which has a height variation of around 300 metres, were scheduled for a whole week at a time. Whatever the weather – be it wet or dry – the test team would drive lap after lap, with each driving time painstakingly recorded and entered into a timesheet. Even the slightest changes to parameters such as stabiliser bars, torsion bars, shock absorbers or the positioning of the wheels on the front and rear axles had to be noted with the utmost accuracy. Only by following a systematic procedure and using faultless measuring instruments was it possible to achieve the objectives set. The times recorded had to be extremely precise and reproducible, as even the tiniest of discrepancies in the results could steer the costly development process in the wrong direction. To avoid any measurement inaccuracies being caused by the warmth of the timekeeper’s hands, the stopwatch was encased in a wooden box and operated via extended start and stop buttons. The results measured and recorded using this method did not just prove beneficial for the development of the Porsche 550 Spyder, however; they were also used for other racing cars, as well as for mass-produced vehicles. Günter Steckkönig believes that “This groundwork and testing with Hanhart stopwatches formed the basis for many of Porsche’s victories on international racing circuits”. •

PRIMUS Desert Pilot

For the modern adventurer The models featured in the Primus collection offer a contemporary take on the legendary chronographs produced by Hanhart. Now, Hanhart is launching the Primus Desert Pilot pilot’s chronograph, which sports a trendy outdoor look with a sand-blasted case and a sandcoloured dial and fabric strap.

H

anhart is known for its precision-perfect and absolutely reliable instrument watches designed for use in the air, on the land and on the sea. The pilot’s chronographs it started producing in its manufactory in the southern German town of Gütenbach back in 1939 were instrumental in shaping the iconic design of this type of timepiece. Hanhart has produced a contemporary version of these legendary chronographs in the form of the Primus Pilot, which cleverly combines historical details with progressive design.

The perfect outdoor look Inspired by the desire for freedom and adventure, Hanhart is now introducing the Primus Desert Pilot, a watch with a cool outdoor look that highlights the independence of the wearer. Its solid stainless steel case with flexible lugs has a matt sand-blasted finish, giving it a technical and sporty appearance. Another new feature is the sand-coloured dial, which presents a striking contrast to the large Arabic numeral 12, clearly readable index marks and distinctive hands – all of which are finished with a black Super-LumiNova®

coating. It is encased by a convex, internally anti-reflective sapphire glass, while a screwed-down sapphire glass case back allows the wearer to see the fascinating interplay of the movement and the skeletonised rotor. The Primus Desert Pilot is finished off with a coarsely woven fabric strap – also sand-coloured – along with a practical, easily adjustable folding clasp made from sand-blasted stainless steel with an inlaid red marking.

Committed to tradition However, like all the models in the Primus collection, the Desert Pilot also bears the recognisable hallmarks which hark back to Hanhart’s watch manufacturing tradition: one of the brand’s distinctive features, the red reset button, underlines the relationship between Hanhart’s first pilot’s chronographs, its mechanical stopwatches and the current collection. It has been a distinguishing characteristic of Hanhart watches since 1939 and was previously intended to prevent pilots from unintentionally resetting the stop time. For the models featured in the Primus collection it has been finished with anodised aluminium. The thin, distinctive fluted bezel with inlaid red marking is also reminiscent of the design of the legendary chronographs from Gütenbach.

Top functionality, ease of use and maximum readability In order to ensure safety and ease of use for the measurement of time intervals or for air and water navigation, or when using a stopwatch to measure interval times and end times or distan ces on dry land, the first priority was to ensure maximum functionality, ease of use and outstanding reading precision. There was no need for unnecessary gimmicks or design features on the case and dial, and Hanhart continues, as always, to stand by this maxim. To ensure an accurate time display and precision chronometry, the models in the Primus collection are equipped with an automatic calibre modified to a bicompax display, featuring a rotor with a skeletonised Hanhart logo. This allows the small seconds to be clearly positioned at 9 o’clock and the 30-minute counter to be arranged at 3 o’clock – a configuration which Hanhart has customarily used from the very beginning. Perfect readability is guaranteed not least by the clear design of the dial and the luminous hands. •

ACTIVITIES

Manufactory in Gütenbach

A successful combination of history and modernity In 1934, Hanhart supplemented its manu facturing facilities in Schwenningen by establishing a second production site in the southern German town of Gütenbach. This site has since been expanded seve ral times over the past few decades, and it is here that – as always – the entire range of mechanical and electronic stopwatches, as well as the Pioneer collection, are made over the course of numerous production stages. In recent years, since the launch of the Primus and Pioneer collections, the focus at Hanhart has once again turned conti nuously and increasingly towards the production of wristwatches. To accommodate this development and satisfy the high demands on modern manufacturing, a new watchmaking studio designed to provide optimum working conditions has been set up on the Gütenbach site. Right next to it, a former workshop space has also been converted to house a new museum. In a setting where the industrial ambience of the early 20 th century has been left largely untouched, visitors will be taken on a journey back in time to the early days of watchmaking craftsmanship at the factory: precious pieces and collector’s items which now have great rarity value are presented here alongside carefully preserved tools, equipment and craft utensils. Large windows form a link between history and modernity, connec ting Hanhart’s long tradition of manufacturing skill with the expertise of the company today. Renovations have also been carried out in the office area on the top floor of the building, which has been enhanced with the addition of a light-filled presentation room that fits in perfectly with the current image of the Hanhart brand. Further improvements are on the agenda for 2013 with the restoration of the external façade and other parts of the building’s interior. •

Brand ambassador

“Mr Hayabusa”

sets new

world record! Elmar Geulen is famous for breaking every speed record on his motorcycle under the pseudonym of “Mr Hayabusa”. In September 2012, the Hanhart brand ambassador set a new world record! On an enhanced road-licensed Suzuki Hayabusa motorbike, he shot down the runway of the German General Motors Test Centre in Dudenhofen/Pferdsfeld at a speed of 330.43 km/h.

E

lmar Geulen achieved a spectacular record-breaking feat on 25 April 2011, when the professional racing driver and Hanhart brand ambassador pulled the inline skater Jürgen Köhler – who was skating on blocks of ice – along a soaked asphalt runway on his modified Suzuki Hayabusa motorbike, at a speed of 209.16 km/h. Yet now he has shattered a new speed record. “Mr Hayabusa” outlined his ambitious goal: “Our tests have shown that we can expect to exceed 350 km/h if the weather conditions at the venue are absolutely perfect.”

And on 8 September, conditions at the General Motors Test Centre in Dudenhofen/Pferdsfeld, Germany, were certainly perfect. Elmar Geulen reached a speed of 330.43 km/h as he travelled down the runway formerly used by Phantom fighter jets on his enhanced Suzuki Hayabusa, which has a power output of 400 HP – the fastest anyone has ever driven on a road-licensed motorbike! With his modified MAB Turbo Hayabusa, which is the only one of its kind in the world, Geulen shattered every speed record: from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, from 0–200 km/h in 6.3 seconds, and from 0–300 km/h in just 13.1 seconds.

Elmar Geulen began his career as a motocross rider in 1976 – and by 1982 he had won the title of German amateur motocross champion four times. In 1983 he decided to move into road racing, and within a year he had made the leap from “B licence” rider to gaining an international A/I licence and was making successful debuts in the most spectacular races in the world: the German Superbike Championship, the 500cc Grand Prix, the Macau Grand Prix, the Endurance World Championship, the Le Mans 24-hour race, the endurance races at Le Castellet and the Nürburgring, the legendary Isle of Man TT race (which he has started 12 times) and much more.

In 1993 he switched to the Supermoto class before moving on to the newly formed Powerbike class for 1300cc motorcycles in 1999. When the Suzuki Hayabusa – the world’s fastest mass-produced motorcycle – came onto the market, Elmar Geulen found the perfect vehicle for Powerbike racing. With this bike, he became the undefeated world champion over a period stretching from 2002 to 2008. As the only rider to achieve success in international motor racing with a modified Suzuki Hayabusa, the press nicknamed him “Mr Hayabusa”. •

on the road! Since December 2012, a bus sponsored by Hanhart and Studio Küpper has been transporting passengers throughout the road network in Aachen, Germany.

If you are out and about on the streets of Switzerland, you are sure to come across this time and again – the new Hanhart semi-trailer.

“Have a sick line!” Only in October are top kayakers given the chance to test their skills on the section of the Ötztaler Ache river known as the “Wellerbrücke” rapids – one of the most challenging and legendary whitewater courses in the world. That is when the Extreme Kayak World Championship takes place in this part of the Austrian Tyrol. As official timekeeper, Hanhart is always there to support the athletes in their search for the perfect route downriver.

river pushes the competitors to the limits of their technical ability and fitness – and they cannot afford to make a mistake.

W

hen extreme kayakers rave about a “sickline”, they are talking about the absolutely perfect, smoothest and quickest route downriver. At the Extreme Kayak World Championship in October 2012, 150 of the world’s best whitewater, slalom and freestyle kayakers from 30 different countries gathered in the Ötztal valley to find this perfect route under race conditions on the swirling rapids, which are naturally punctuated with obstacles of the most formidable kind. This challenging 280-metre long stretch of

The extreme kayaking section of the Ötztaler Ache river is known as “Wellerbrücke” and its awe-inspiring whitewater reaches grade 5 level of difficulty – making it not only technically demanding, but also dangerous. Unlike the previous year’s competition, the 2012 World Championship also presented the kayakers with an extra challenge: during the winter thaw, a new hole had formed just before the infamous “Champions Killer”– the last waterfall in this stretch of the river – which the extreme kayakers have fondly dubbed the “Champions Killer Minus 1”. This posed some major difficulties for the competitors. 24-year-old Sam Sutton produced an impressive performance to prove once again that he is currently the fastest extreme whitewater kayaker in the world. The New Zealander successfully defended his title with a winning time of 56.92 seconds, which was recorded by Hanhart: “This victory was undoubtedly the most difficult one for me. The standard of competition has never been so high; this is an Olympic year, so everyone was extremely fast – it’s probably the strongest field we’ve ever had!” •

Three 20-minute sessions of sheer excitement on the ice When the real action gets underway on the ice and the best teams fight for glory, Hanhart is sure to be there. As a specialist in timekeeping for dynamic sports both on and under the water, Hanhart has not only served as an official watch partner for the SC Bern ice hockey team since 2010, but it is also the “official timekeeper” for the prestigious Spengler Cup Davos.

When this year’s Spengler Cup – arguably the oldest international ice hockey tournament – kicked off in the Swiss city of Davos on 26 December 2012, Hanhart resumed its key role as official timekeeper. Since back in 1923, the world’s top ice hockey teams have been coming to the highest city in Europe to compete for the winner’s trophy, donated by tournament founder Dr Carl Spengler. The tournament is held annually between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve in the ice-skating arena in Davos. In addition to the host team HC Davos and the ever-present Team Canada, a varying selection of domestic and foreign teams take part each year. Team Canada ultimately claimed victory over the hosts HC Davos in a spectacular final with a scoreline of 7:2. •

Pioneer

Looking at these watches, it is clear where their origins lie. In terms of their design and technology, all of the models in the Pioneer collection are based on Hanhart’s long tradition and outstanding expertise in producing fine chronographs, albeit interpreted in a new way. They are characterised by trademark details which have been unmistakable features of the brand since the start: the typical “bicompax” display format, the red button, the increased spacing between the crown and the upper button, the fluted rotating bezel – depending on the model – with its red mark ing, and the striking riveted leather strap. Perfect, high-precision functionality and optimum readability come as standard with these instrument watches. A particular highlight of the collection is the limited Pioneer Stealth 1882. This flyback chronograph features an hour counter in addition to the usual minute counter. However, to retain the typical bicompax display format, this extra counter has been incorporated into the small seconds. The exclusively modified automatic calibre of the watch also enables the two displays to be positioned in an aesthetically balanced arrangement on the edge of the minimalist dial, just as they were on the legendary models of the past.

PRIMUS

contemporary take

In a on previous Hanhart chronographs, the Primus collection cleverly combines traditional elements with stateof-the-art technology and progressive design.

The Pilot, Racer and Diver models are the perfect embodiment of Hanhart’s core area of expertise: the manufacture of precision timepieces for use in the air, on the land and on the sea. While the Primus Pilot recalls the brand’s legendary pilot’s watches, the Primus Racer represents Hanhart’s long tradition as a top manufactory of hand-wound stopwatches, which have been used for all the major motor races. Meanwhile the Primus Diver, with its ease of use and outstanding readability, impresses amateur sailors and divers today in the same way as its predecessors appealed to the naval officers of the past.

CLASSICTIMER Since 1924, when the first stopwatches were released from the company’s own workshop, Hanhart has been a pioneer in this field and has pro gressed to become the most important manufacturer of time-measuring instruments.

In as early as 1935, Hanhart developed the complex two-hand stopwatch and, with its “ Superschnellschwinger” (super-fast) watch with a frequency of 360,000 vibrations per hour, became one of the first manufacturers to enable hundredths of a second to be measured.

Continuing a long tradition, high-quality mechanical stopwatches are still being produced in Gütenbach in a series of countless individual work steps. Their manufacture movements enable timing down to a hundredth of a second and include specially developed complex features such as a drag indicator or flyback function. In the past, they have been used at all major sporting events and motor races, amongst other things, and today they are popular collector’s items and an invaluable companion at rallies, particularly for ambitious drivers of vintage cars.
