ANSU SESAY

1997 USA Basketball World University Games Sicily, Italy Gold Medal Prior to the 1997-98 season, Ansu Sesay helped Team USA win the gold medal at the 1997 World University Games, which were held in Siciliy, Italy. Team USA posted a perfect 6-0 record at the World University Games, defeating Canada 72-64 in the championship contest. Sesay played in all six games and averaged 7.5 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists. He finished sixth on the squad in scoring. The Houston, Texas, native also shot 51.9 percent from the field and 73.9 percent from the free throw line. He netted a team-high 19 points in Team USA’s opening win over South Africa by a 110-32 score. His other highs were four rebounds in wins over South Africa and Great Britian, four assists in victories over Hong Kong and South Korea and three steals in wins over South Africa and Hong Kong.

KEITH CARTER 1998 USA Basketball Goodwill Games New York, N.Y. Gold Medal

In the summer of 1998, Keith Carter was a member of the United States team that won the gold medal at the Goodwill Games. The gold medal was the first by a U.S. amateur team in international play since 1986, and Team USA posted a 4-1 record en route to the gold medal. Carter played in all five games and averaged 7.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists. The Perryville, Ark., native had four steals and one blocked shot in the Goodwill Games and also shot 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from the field, 40 percent (6-of-15) from the three-point line and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the free throw line. Carter came off the bench to score 15 points in Team USA’s 106-75 win over Brazil, which propelled the U.S. into the Goodwill Games semifinals. He netted his 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, including 2-of-4 from the three-point line. Carter had a solid all-around performance with four points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals in Team USA’s 93-85 overtime victory over Australia in the gold-medal game. He helped carry the game into overtime as his defensive pressure on Australia’s Andrew Gaze forced Gaze into a long three-point attempt which missed its mark at the end of regulation. Carter also scored 12 points and grabbed three boards in Team USA’s 89-76 win over Lithuania in the semifinal round.
