Faculty Desiree Acosta (Ballet, Preschool, Tap) began dancing at the age of 4 and developed her skills through her home studio, workshops, competition, and church. She completed Dance Masters of America’s Teacher’s Training School in New York. Christine Brewer (Acting) has been teaching in the public school system for over 25 years. Currently at Clarke County High School, she directs the school’s thespian troupe, forensics team, one-act competition play, and spring musical. She has taught the OOHAC summer theatre camps for over 14 years. Steven Brewer (Acting) has been the Managing & Artistic Director of the OOH Theatre Company & Arts Centre since 2003. He has degrees in Theatre Performance from the State University of New York and in English from Clemson University. Steve has worked in community, professional, and educational theatre for over 30 years, and has directed more than 40 plays and musicals at the OOH. Deswell Carr (Hip Hop, Preschool) received his dance training as a student with the Charles Town Dance Studio, which became the OOH Dance Studio. He’s been a part of the studio for 10 years and began teaching at the OOHAC in 2012. Deswell is the show choir choreographer at Washington High School. Heather Toma Carr (Ballet, Jazz) trained and performed in Los Angeles with several dance companies, followed by dancing ballet, jazz, and musical theatre in national and international touring productions. She was Assistant Director-Choreographer for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus before moving to Charles Town. Ed Conn (Broadway, Tap) began performing at the age of 5 with the Capachione School of the Performing Arts in Massachusetts. He studied Musical Theatre at Shenandoah Conservatory, and began teaching dance at Allegro Dance Studio in 2011. Ed has been with the OOH as an actor since 1997 and became an OOHAC dance instructor in 2013. Christina Franz (Ballet, Pointe) brings over 30 years of teaching experience to the OOHAC. She studied ballet under Leda Anchutina Eglevsky at the Eglevsky Ballet in Long Island, New York and then went on to train at the American Dance Machine at The Broadway Dance Center and Steps in New York City. She joined the OOHAC in 2016. Sherry Smith (Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical) has been a dance instructor since 1998, with experience teaching Ballet, Jazz, and Tap to students ranging in age from three to adult. Before joining the OOHAC, she taught at a studio in Chantilly, Virginia, until 2014.

Heather Mae Wilson (Voice) studied Music Education with a concentration in Voice at Concord University, and she completed a Master of Music Education at Shenandoah Conservatory at Shenandoah University. She has been teaching voice, instrumental, general music, and theatre arts for 14 years.

General Schedule We run a full-year academic calendar program with abbreviated summer offerings. Fall: 10 weeks (2nd week of Sept. to the 3rd week of Nov.) The Dance Studio performs The Nutcracker during even-dated years. During odd-dated years, the Arts Centre performs a different winterthemed production. Participation in winter production is optional. Acting Performance and Youth Choir have performances at the end of the semester. Spring: 19 weeks (2nd week of Jan. to the week before Memorial Day). Following instruction weeks, there will be two weeks of rehearsals for the dance recital, which falls the weekend after Memorial Day. Participation in the recital is mandatory. Acting Performance and Youth Choir will have performances at the end of the semester. Summer Classes: We offer a several weeks of theatre and dance camps during the summer. Students may audition for our summer production.

Cancellation Policy School & Holiday: If Jefferson County schools are closed due to a teacher work day or similar non-weather related event, the OOH will continue on schedule. We also are not closed for Federal holidays (such as President's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Election Day, etc.). Inclement Weather: If Jefferson County schools are closed due to inclement weather, daytime classes (Preschool, Homeschool) will be canceled. For classes that meet at 4:00 p.m. or later, a decision on cancellation will be made by 1:30 p.m. For Saturday morning classes, a determination will be made by 9:00 a.m. If we feel that most dancers and our instructors can make it safely to and from the OOH, we will hold classes. If snow begins in the late afternoon, evening classes may be canceled if it is felt that the road conditions would worsen before dismissal time. Road conditions can vary dramatically in different parts of the county. Parents should always use their best judgment with regard to driving in inclement weather. We will notify families of our decision by email, on our Studio Facebook page, and by text. Sign up for our notification service to be notified via text: Text OOHSTUDIO to 51660. Make-Up Classes & Refunds: Our tuition pricing takes into account the possibility of missed days each semester due to weather or instructor illness. We therefore will make up classes at our discretion and when time permits. We do not provide refunds or credits for these missed classes. Students who miss a class due to illness or injury are welcome to talk to the instructor about making up that class during another class time.

Studio Policies 1. We strongly support a positive environment! Parents and students alike should always be respectful and supportive of teachers and fellow students by not speaking of them in a negative fashion. 2. Students must be dressed in proper attire for class (see Dress Code). 3. Arrive to class on time. Students arriving after warm-ups may be asked to sit and observe the class or make it up at another time in order to avoid injury. 4. No food, drinks, gum, etc. allowed in dance studio with the exception of closed water bottles. No cell phones in class. 5. Students must be picked up promptly after class ends. 6. The OOHAC is not responsible for class changes between our two buildings. 7. Parents are welcome to sit in the waiting room but are not permitted in the classroom, except during observation week. Please help us by keeping the waiting room clean and orderly. 8. If you have smaller children with you, please keep them quietly occupied. You must keep them away from the Studio doors, which can open unexpectedly. 9. We have many activities happening in our buildings (rehearsals, classes, meetings, office staff working). Please keep voices and noise at a moderate level. This also helps instructors to focus on teaching your child. 10. N. George Street and Liberty Streets are very busy. Do not ask your dancer to cross the street to get to your car. All studio participants under the age of 18 are asked to wait inside for their ride. Parents should come inside to pick up younger dancers. 11. The OOHAC reserves the right to dismiss any student for breaking the rules, being disruptive or uncooperative, or endangering staff and other students, without refund. The OOHAC strives to maintain an environment for students to feel safe and comfortable and has a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior causing physical or emotional harm to other students and instructors. 12. The OOHAC is not responsible for items left in the waiting room, including electronics and dance gear. 13. All students must have a current Emergency Contact form on file with the OOH Office. 14. Students withdrawing from a class must do so in writing 30 days prior to leaving. 9


Tuition Monthly tuition is based on the total number of minutes of class time your family is taking. To determine your tuition, add the total number of weekly minutes of classes for each family member enrolled. The number of minutes can be found on the registration form next to the class name. Refer to the tuition chart for the monthly tuition cost. For example, if you have one dancer taking an hour-long class and another dancer taking a 45minute class, then your family is taking 105 minutes of class time per week and tuition is $80/month. If your total family minutes exceed 675, your tuition caps at $300/month. Payments can be made by credit/debit card, check, or cash:  Automatic payments: Provide a credit/debit card number for payment to be deducted automatically the first week of the month.  Invoice: OOH will email an invoice for payment the first week of the month with a $5.00 monthly service charge added to each payment. Payments received after the 15th of the month will incur a $15 late fee.  Pay in Full: Pay for the year in full and receive a 5% discount. To determine the year payment, calculate your monthly payment and multiply by 8.  You will be billed for 8 months (Sept.-Nov., Jan.-May), which is the total tuition divided into 8 payments. There is no tuition due in December, though costume payments may be due.

 If you withdraw your child from our Studio, we must be notified in writing 30 days in advance.

Additional Fees The OOHAC does not charge a registration fee. Other expenses you can expect include: Required  Ballet uniform. The OOH office has these available for your convenience: $12 for Ballet I-IV; $20 for Ballet V-Advanced, $15 for skirt for Intermediate and Advanced Pointe. Classes Acting Studio The OOHAC Acting Studio offers small classes that are designed to encourage students to have a strong respect for the performing arts and for each other as individual artists. Class work includes scene study, role playing, and improvisation and creative exercises that keep the studio fun and engaging. Our goal is to be sure that each student understands what it means to be a good performer, to utilize their creative tools, and to be an actor in today's competitive theatre world. Acting Ages 8-18. Students will build their acting skills with fun, technique-driven activities, such as improvisation, reading from scripts, creating scenes, and jumping from different voices, hats, costumes, and characters in this fun class. Acting Performance—Production TBA, will be selected based on class enrollment Ages 10-18. Students should have taken one Acting I class or take it simultaneously with Acting Performance. All students will audition and be cast in the production. Each class thereafter will be used to stage and rehearse the play, which will be performed for parents and friends. Students must attend both weekly class meetings (Tuesdays & Thursdays) to participate.

Voice Studio The OOHAC Voice Studio offers a Youth Choir and Private Voice Lessons. Young vocalists will learn the proper techniques that will help them to sing with strength and clarity without straining. Students in the Voice Studio will perform once per semester at a local venue (such as Black Dog Coffee). Youth Choir Age 10-18. Students must audition. Students learn proper singing techniques including diction, breathing, pitch, and posture. Students learn to build confidence when singing in front of others. Private Voice Lessons Ages 8-18. Private lessons are scheduled by appointment. These are oneon-one lessons to develop your particular vocal instrument and build a repertory of songs. Private voice lessons are $1/minute.

Dance Studio Dancers who are new to our studio should contact our office for advice on class placement. A student typically stays at a level for 1-2 years, especially if they have never had any dance instruction or if they are new to that level.

Preschool Classes Preschool Ballet Ages 3-5. Students learn beginner ballet steps while working on stretching, coordination, locomotive skills, and having fun. Dancers must be potty trained and be able to participate in class without a parent. Preschool Ballet/Tap Ages 3-5. Students learn beginner ballet steps while working on stretching, coordination, locomotive skills, and having fun. Students are introduced to the rhythm and fun of percussive dance by learning basic tap skills. Dancers must be potty trained and able to participate in class without a parent.

Ballet Classes Beginning Ballet Ages 5+. This class introduces young students to the beginning fundamentals of ballet. Basic ballet skills, vocabulary, rhythm, and coordination are taught and developed through creative movement in the structured environment of a traditional ballet class. This class is for young dancers who are new to ballet and dancers who are transitioning out of our Preschool Dance. Ballet I & II Ages 6+. Students in this class will concentrate on basic ballet fundamentals, including body alignment, vocabulary, and basic positions of the arms and feet. Ballet III & IV Students will continue with the foundations of ballet. They will focus on technique at a beginning intermediate level. Students will move through the barre, center work, and progressions, which include turns, jumps, and leaps. Ballet V This twice-weekly class allows the teacher to assess readiness for pointe, offering an atmosphere for proper evaluation of important skills. Students begin to develop and strengthen the muscles necessary to go en pointe. The class stresses correct alignment and correct classical ballet technique. Ballet VI This class meets twice a week. Students at this level will continue to work on their technique. The combinations and floor patterns will be more complicated than in previous classes. Students may begin to go en pointe, and will work on strengthening exercises. Ballet VII Students continue to work on their technique in this twice-weekly class. The combinations and floor patterns will be more complicated than in previous classes. Students typically are also in Intermediate Pointe. This class prepares dancers to transition to Advanced Ballet. Advanced Ballet & Pointe **By audition & permission from instructor. In this twice-weekly class the technique is faster, more demanding, and focus is on building stamina and skill. Students must have acquired the proper level of strength and ability to safely participate in this class. Advanced Pointe students must be enrolled in Advanced Ballet. Homeschool Ballet This class is intended for students in Ballet levels V through VII. The class may be taken as one of the two class requirements, or it may be taken in addition to the two classes. Teen Ballet Teen Ballet is open to students in Ballet V and above that are looking to include ballet to enhance their dancing quality, but do not wish to be enrolled in a more rigorous en pointe program. Dancers will focus on Cecchetti-influenced ballet.

Beginning Pointe This class emphasizes foot strengthening exercises and alignment. A slow, thorough, and careful approach assures a safe and solid foundation that allows the student to be in control and at ease as she dances en pointe. Students may need more than one year in beginning pointe. Must be enrolled in Ballet VI. Intermediate Pointe **By audition and permission from the instructor. This class continues to emphasize foot strengthening exercises and alignment. Students must have acquired the proper level of strength and ability to safely participate in this class. Students may need more than one year in Intermediate Pointe. Must be enrolled in Ballet VII. Homeschool Pointe Like Homeschool Ballet, this class is for students enrolled in Ballet VI or VII and Beginning or Intermediate Pointe. This class may replace one of the two required classes or may be taken in place of one of the two classes.

Hip Hop Classes Hip Hop I & II Ages 5+. Students will learn basic elements of hip hop with high-energy warm ups and basic technical training. Students will learn various floor combinations. Hip Hop III Students will continue to learn elements of hip hop with high-energy warm ups and technical training. Students will build endurance and stamina through class work as well as learn various floor combinations. Hip Hop IV Students will continue to learn elements of hip hop with high-energy warm ups and technical training. A more in-depth study of specific styles of hip hop will be explored at this level.

Jazz Classes Jazz I Ages 5+. This class is for students with little to no experience in jazz dance. Students will learn basic isolations, work on placement, coordination, and combinations. Students are encouraged to enroll in a ballet class; jazz is a style of dance that finds its roots in ballet and participating in a ballet class will improve a dancer’s jazz technique. Jazz II-V These jazz class levels focus on body isolations while students work on jazz technique, stretching, flexibility, and coordination. Students will learn different jazz style combinations. Students are encouraged to be enrolled in a ballet class; jazz is a style of dance that finds its roots in ballet and participating in a ballet class will improve a dancer’s jazz technique. Advanced Jazz **By audition and permission from the instructor. This class works on jazz technique, body isolations, stretching, flexibility, turns, jumps/leaps, and coordination. Students placed in this class must have a high level of technique and be enrolled in a ballet class (can get instructor approval not to be in ballet).

Tap Classes Tap I Ages 5+. Tap I is a fun class for students with little to no previous tap dance experience. Students will learn basic tap vocabulary and rhythmic skills while focusing on coordination and basic tap beats. Tap II Tap II is geared towards the beginning intermediate student, with at least one or more years of tap dancing. These classes consist of more technique working on coordination, rhythmic variations, timing and beats. Tap III & IV These classes are geared towards the more experienced student, with at least 2-3 years of tap dancing. Classes consist of more technique working on coordination, rhythmic variations, timing, and beats. Advanced Tap **By audition and permission from the instructor. Students should have the highest level of technique in this class, which focuses on technique, beats, and timing, emphasizing precise footwork and rhythms. Students work on different tap progressions and combinations.

Special Interest Classes Broadway I Ages 8-12. This class introduces a variety of dance styles that have made the American Musical Theatre a favorite of performers. Broadway II Ages 13-18. This class continues the exploration of dance styles in American Musical Theatre. The class evolves from Broadway I with a more advanced look and more advanced movements.

Lyrical Lyrical is the perfect fusion of ballet and jazz and is performed to music with lyrics to inspire movements that express strong feelings and emotions, which allows for a more individual approach and expressiveness. Students must be enrolled in Ballet V or Jazz IV or above and should also have one previous year of Ballet V or Jazz IV.

Adult Classes Adult Tap Adults, have you taken tap before and want a refresher? Always been interested in tap but never taken a class? Join us each week for an evening of percussive fun! This class is a great workout. Adult Roulette This class will shuffle through Jazz, Ballet, Broadway, Hip Hop, and possibly more. During the second semester, participants in the class will work with the instructor to decide which style to showcase for the recital! If our Adult Tap class is any indication, this will be a great workout—and a lot of fun!

Placement & Advancement Acting Studio In our Acting Studio, there is no upward path of advancement through class titles. The longer your child is with us, the more refined his or her talent will become. Each semester, our Acting class offers a different area of focus, so if your child chooses to join that class semester after semester, s/he will continue to broaden his or her acting skill foundation. Acting Performance will work on a different script each semester, which means the roles, character development, and production education will be different each semester. Dance Studio Of our three studios, our Dance Studio has the most linear progression through levels of training. Each discipline of dance advances at a different rate. We currently offer Preschool dance, nine levels of Ballet, six levels of Jazz, five levels of Tap, four levels of Hip Hop, and special interest classes. This means that a dancer will move through the levels of Ballet more quickly than through the levels of Tap, for example. However, students should expect to be in the same level in a discipline for a few years. We will advise dancers which classes are appropriate based on their current skill level. Ensuring that your child arrives to every class on time and ready to go will help them to more readily master each level. Absences and tardiness prevent your child from fully embracing his or her dance education. ď‚Ž Instructors follow a rubric specific to each form of dance and are continuously monitoring students to assess progress. As dancers meet the skills in that level, instructors will determine if they are ready to advance. ď‚Ž Please refrain from contacting instructors or the office to have your dancer moved to a different level. It is important for each student to be in the class that fits their skill level to prevent injury and frustration. A student that is placed improperly is being set up to fail. Voice Studio We are able to teach several levels of experience within one small group. As your child returns to class each semester, the curriculum offered to them will be appropriate to their vocal development and progress.

Dress Code All students are expected to attend classes in suitable attire. In general, students should wear clothing that permits them to move freely, such as athletic gear or dance apparel.
