STORYTIME IN THE PARK Storytime moves to the park this summer! Bring a blanket and enjoy stories, songs and fingerplays. Duration: 30 minutes. READ TO A DOG Young readers are invited to drop by and read to a cuddly canine. Upon arrival, check in at Children’s Services for a reading time. Trained therapy dogs provided by Pets for Life, Inc. Reading sessions will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
FIND FIDO FRIDAYS Stop by the library every Friday throughout the summer and try to track down that pesky dog Fido who will be hiding somewhere in the Children’s Department. If you find him and tell us where he is, you’ll get a small prize!

Space is limited and tickets will be handed out 15 minutes before on a first-come first-served basis. Seating is on the floor and no chairs, food or drink is allowed. AWESOME BIRDS Meet a curly-crested toucan and a green parrot. Marvel at a cockatoo who does tricks and Mr. Bo Jangles who will dance. Watch Swoop the owl as he flies overhead. SUMMER BOOKMARK CONTEST Design a bookmark for the Olathe Public Library! Entries will be judged by grade and prizes will be awarded. Winning entries will be printed and distributed at both Olathe libraries at the end of the summer. Entry forms available here and in the library. For kids entering 1st – 5th grade. Music INTERMEDIATE UKULELE R Americana Music Academy’s Linda Tilton will cover fingerpicking, reading tablature and advanced chord shapes such as barre and diminished. Babysitting SAFE SITTER ® BABYSITTING CLASSES R Ready to take on the responsibility of babysitting? The best sitter is a Safe Sitter®! Take this fun class where you’ll learn how to handle emergencies when caring for young children. This class will discuss information on how to set up a babysitting business, what to do with behavioral issues, how to be a successful babysitter and child care essentials. You will also go home with a certificate of completion and a manual. Class will cover choking infant/ child rescue and infant/child CPR. A graduation ceremony will be held at 4:30 PM and parents are invited to attend. More than 50% of the American population over the age of 30 has gum disease, and tooth pain is the most common reason that children miss school. A registered dental hygienist will discuss the signs and symptoms of common dental diseases and conduct free dental screenings. Music SPENCER & RAINS: ART & MUSIC Tricia Spencer & Howard Rains, both multi-instrumentalists known for their twin fiddling, play old time fiddle tunes and sing songs in the style of their home states, Kansas and Texas, as well as other regional styles. In addition to playing and preserving old time fiddle tunes, both are artists. Their performance kicks off Indian Creek’s month-long exhibition of Rain’s artwork, which captures the spirit of traditional fiddle music on paper. Screening WORLD ELEPHANT DAY SCREENING: ELEPHANTS IN THE COFFEE To commemorate World Elephant Day, Bhaskar Krishnamurthy will screen his documentary, “Elephants in the Coffee.” A discussion will follow. In the film, Bhaskar and co-producer Tom Grant explore the relationship between elephants and humans, especially in southwestern India, where wildlife parks abut coffee plantations.
