WELCOME! This catalog features programs and events for all ages. You can have the latest issue sent to your email through our Library Loop newsletter. Sign-up for Library Loop on the front page of the library website. We try hard to make sure everything in here is accurate but sometimes unexpected things happen. STORYTIME IN THE PARK Storytime moves to the park this summer! Bring a blanket and enjoy stories, songs and fingerplays. Duration: 30 minutes. Stories will be geared to 3 to 5 year olds, but all are welcome. In case of rain, storytime will be cancelled. Birth to Preschool FAIRY TALE STEAM Use STEAM concepts (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) to help your favorite fairy tale characters. READ TO A DOG Young readers are invited to drop by and read to a cuddly canine. Upon arrival, check in at Children’s Services for a reading time. Trained therapy dogs provided by Pets for Life, Inc. Reading sessions will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

FIND FIDO FRIDAYS Stop by the library every Friday throughout the summer and try to track down that pesky dog Fido who will be hiding somewhere in the Children’s Department. If you find him and tell us where he is, you’ll get a small prize!

A registered dental hygienist will discuss the signs and symptoms of common dental diseases and conduct free dental screenings. Information on where to get affordable dental care will be available. Big Programs

at Indian Creek Community Church (12480 S. Black Bob Rd.) These programs are geared towards 1st through 5th graders but parents and siblings are welcome. Space is limited and tickets will be handed out 15 minutes before on a first-come first-served basis. Seating is on the floor and no chairs, food or drink is allowed. AWESOME BIRDS Meet a curly-crested toucan and a green parrot. Marvel at a cockatoo who does tricks and Mr. Bo Jangles who will dance. Watch Swoop the owl as he flies overhead. The birds from Wings of Love will surprise and delight. Duration: 45 minutes to an hour. NOTE: At the request of our presenters, no preschoolers or babies at this program, please. SUMMER BOOKMARK CONTEST Design a bookmark for the Olathe Public Library! Entries will be judged by grade and prizes will be awarded. Winning entries will be printed and distributed at both Olathe libraries at the end of the summer. Entry forms available here and in the library. For kids entering 1st – 5th grade. Deadline for entries is June 26. Winner will be announced July 10 with bookmarks available July 31.

Music INTERMEDIATE UKULELE R Americana Music Academy’s Linda Tilton will cover fingerpicking, reading tablature and advanced chord shapes such as barre and diminished. The class focuses on standard ukuleles but baritones are welcome. This class is for those who know basic chords and chord progressions. Ages 13 and up. Duration: 2 hours. Babysitting SAFE SITTER ® BABYSITTING CLASSES R Ready to take on the responsibility of babysitting? The best sitter is a Safe Sitter®! Take this fun class where you’ll learn how to handle emergencies when caring for young children. This class will discuss information on how to set up a babysitting business, what to do with behavioral issues, how to be a successful babysitter and child care essentials. You will also go home with a certificate of completion and a manual. Class will cover choking infant/ child rescue and infant/child CPR. A graduation ceremony will be held at 4:30 PM and parents are invited to attend. Courses are FREE for Olathe residents or students that live in the Olathe School District & $20 for those residing outside of Olathe/the Olathe School District. Bring a sack lunch, snacks and drink and completed Student Information Form and Student Contract to class. For ages 11-16. Please arrive between 9:45 & 9:55 AM. Beginning and advanced genealogists are welcome. Librarians and volunteers will be available to help. SCAN YOUR HISTORICAL PHOTOS R Save your family photos, slides and negatives and make them look like new using the library’s scanners. You can correct fading, spots and color. Music SPENCER & RAINS: ART & MUSIC Tricia Spencer & Howard Rains, both multi-instrumentalists known for their twin fiddling, play old time fiddle tunes and sing songs in the style of their home states, Kansas and Texas, as well as other regional styles. In addition to playing and preserving old time fiddle tunes, both are artists. Their performance kicks off Indian Creek’s month-long exhibition of Rain’s artwork, which captures the spirit of traditional fiddle music on paper. Screening WORLD ELEPHANT DAY SCREENING: ELEPHANTS IN THE COFFEE To commemorate World Elephant Day, Bhaskar Krishnamurthy will screen his documentary, “Elephants in the Coffee.” A discussion will follow. In the film, Bhaskar and co-producer Tom Grant explore the relationship between elephants and humans, especially in southwestern India, where wildlife parks abut coffee plantations.
