Penticton Hospital Auxiliary The Auxiliary has been serving Penticton Regional Hospital for over 100 years. It was initially started after a typhoid outbreak in 1913. Patients were placed in tents near the former nursing home on Fairview Road, and Mrs. C.A.C. Stewart formed the Ladies Aid to Penticton Hospital to help improve patient comforts.

In 1915 the Hospital was moved to Haven Hill and the group helped in many other projects including a Flu epidemic as well as providing linen supplies to a hospital ship during World War 1. In 1927 they provided furnishings and equipment for the new nurses’ residence and operated a panel truck as an ambulance service. In 1953 the new hospital was built and the Ladies Aid was changed to Hospital Auxiliary.

H O L I DAY E D I T I O N

These are just a few highlights of the group’s past history and the present members are proud to continue the mandate of “Adding to the Comfort and Care of PRH Patients” by fundraising and volunteering at the Hospital.

2018 pg8

From their humble beginnings in the mid 1900’s to present day, the Auxiliary members continue to work together to provide services and comforts to the residents of Penticton and area. Other projects supported by the Auxiliary are: The Care Closet, Breakfast Learning Club, Meals on Wheels, The Candy Stripers, Bursaries and numerous equipment purchases. The Auxiliary is currently working on fulfilling their pledge of raising $250,000 for equipment in the David E. Kampe Patient Tower, and they are very close to fulfilling that goal. With the support of Cherry Lane Shopping Centre, the Auxiliary has provided the “Christmas Gift Wrapping Service” for the last four years. The Auxiliary will be back for this Christmas season, offering the gift-wrapping service for the community. Volunteers are always needed. Please contact June at the Hospital Auxiliary if you are interested in volunteering for the Gift Wrap this year, or are interested in volunteering for the Auxiliary. Phone number is 250-492-4000 ext 2380. 

Giving Back: South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation Penticton Regional Hospital Cherry Lane Shopping Centre has raised a significant amount of money over the past four years towards the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation’s campaign to raise $20 Million dollars for the Medical Equipment for the new hospital tower. Starting in 2014, we have donated the proceeds from our “Photos with Santa” each Christmas Season.

To date we have raised $53,762, just from the Photos With Santa!

We would like to thank the community members/families who stopped by to see Santa in centre court to have their pictures taken – we couldn’t have done it without you! We look forward to another busy Photos with Santa season this month to add to our total towards the hospital fundraiser. 

When this magazine was distributed on December 5, the Santa photos will already be underway. We will once again donate the proceeds from the photo sessions towards the hospital tower project.

Property Sustainability Cherry Lane Shopping Centre is very proud of the integration of sustainability and environmental, social and governance practices into the operations of the centre.

The owners and management company fully understand the role that they play in providing healthy and efficient buildings and aim to become leaders in sustainability practices with a focus on health and well-being along with low-carbon energy supply. In recognizing that sustainability is an important part of retail business, tenants and occupants are partners when it comes to the Shopping Centre’s impact on the environment and overall sustainable practices. To support the owners’ philosophy, Cherry Lane will undertake to communicate to tenants and employees of the shopping centre, ideas, reports and information to help reduce negative impacts to the environment, along with health and wellness initiatives for employees. A wealth of information and guidance on sustainability practices has been provided along with helpful “toolkits” that provide practical ideas and strategies to help reduce environmental impact. With the assistance of the helpful “toolkits”, Cherry Lane has provided the tenants guidance on six areas where sustainability performance can be improved. The six areas are: } } Energy

Conservation

} } Water

Conservation

} } Waste

Management

H O L I DAY E D I T I O N

} } Transportation

2018 pg16

} } Purchasing

and

Materials } } Indoor

Air Quality

By identifying these important issues, it will improve business, the wellbeing of the employees, tenants, and the surrounding community. Going forward, Cherry Lane looks forward to working with the numerous partners to minimize the environmental impact, support health & wellness, and promote responsible business practices. 

In recent years, Cherry Lane Shopping Centre has undergone a series of building and property upgrades in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint. The main objective is, to borrow a phrase, to “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle where ever possible. Some of the changes are readily seen, such as the new landscaping on the East side of the property. Other projects are not as apparent, but equally as important. Russ Rexworthy, Operations Manager, began working at Cherry Lane in March of 2014 and a project was nearing completion to remove the florescent tube lighting along the entire valance area, approximately 1,650 linear feet. The old tube lighting was replaced with LED strip lighting. The strip lighting uses only 8.76 Watts per meter and will save 60,413 KWH annually. Since then, seventeen skylights have been changed in a similar fashion, replacing 1,834’ of florescent tubes with strip lighting. With this project completed, the building realizes a saving of 59,474 kilowatt hours annually. The retrofit continues with the service hallways. They have been partially converted to LED in 2018. This is an ongoing project. Another big change for Cherry Lane Shopping Centre has been the updating/upgrading of the landscaping and irrigation system. The Property has changed from large gallonage sprinkler heads to site specific drip irrigation. Additional landscaping was replanted with drought tolerant plants, grasses and trees. The water usage in this area has dropped by 60-75%. The personnel at Cherry Lane Shopping Centre is very proud of the work being done here with respect to recycling. Procedures are in place to divert cardboard and mixed paper from the landfill, as you do at home. All metal, light bulbs, glass and styrofoam are taken to companies where they can be properly handled. Having established a strong rapport with the new Habitat for Humanity (Restore) here in Penticton, the shopping centre donates items from when a store changes or simply changes their look. Restore is happy to repurpose anything. The Staff at Cherry Lane Shopping Centre are the engine that drives the machine. They take great pride in what they have accomplished over the past few years. They have taken ownership of this property and it shows in the things that have been accomplished. We have tremendous support and financial backing from the Owner, the property management team, and the staff collectively strive to provide a safe and comfortable shopping experience for all the visitors to the centre. - Russ Rexworthy, Operations Manager, Cherry Lane Shopping Centre

Vintage Car Show This past April, The South Okanagan chapter of the Vintage Car Club of Canada, were back in the Shopping Centre with a magnificent display of cars and trucks ranging from the early 1900’s to the 1970’s. Volunteers, like Don and Joyce Smith, have been active at Cherry Lane displaying the cars since the opening of our shopping centre doors back in 1976. These automobiles are shared because of caring owners giving of their time and expertise. For this we are very appreciative.

Great job everyone! A few pictures of the beautiful cars are shown here and at: cherrylane.ca/vintage-car-show-2018/

Cherry Lane’s New Look!

Mall Posters

Through the later half of 2017 and into 2018, the marketing department has been working hard on creating a new brand for Cherry Lane. You may have noticed the mall posters have changed, along with a gradual change on our print ads, social media images and an over all re-vamped marketing look. Together with Lerbekmo Design, our department has created a new logo, and a new marketing style which is now officially launched with this magazine. Clean lines and a more modern look were two of the priorities going forward for the rebrand. Have a look on this page – you may have seen a few of these images in the centre and around the community.

Mall Posters Calendar

There is still a lot of work to do to change everything over to the new branding. Going forward you will notice the subtle changes that incorporate this new look as we update & renovate the shopping centre. ď Ž

A Message from the General Manager - Judy Richards Cherry Lane Shopping Centre has been an integral part of the City of Penticton for forty-three years. Positioned on twenty-one acres of land it is positioned mid-way between Okanagan and Skaha Lakes. A business bridge supporting the community of Penticton. The merchandise mix is made up of three anchor stores; Hudson’s Bay, Save On Foods and London Drugs. These are complimented by fifty-eight national, regional and local retailers. The newest stores being, Lachi, Boathouse and Ardene. Cherry Lane Shopping Centre is also an economic engine in the city with approximately seven hundred people being employed at the centre throughout the year. The retailers create annual sales in excess of one hundred and sixty million dollars. The facility has undergone many notable changes through its history. The major ones being the addition of Hudson’s Bay (1998), the 1995 expansion which included the addition of Save On foods, twenty thousand feet of retail and the addition of twenty six skylights. London Drugs was built in 2005, followed by the construction of the new washrooms in 2007.

The most recent improvements include the Main Street landscaping that was completed over two years in three stages and the addition of state of the art roof top units for the Tenants. The Owners are looking to the future with plans to build new washrooms with access off of the food court starting early in 2019. There will be three new food court units created in the food court to provide more selection. Renderings have also been created depicting the renovation of the seating area in the food court. This scope of work will include new floors, improved ceiling detail and new furniture. Over the years hundreds of nonprofit organizations and thousands of volunteers and supporters have utilized the shopping centre to enhance their fund raising efforts. Volunteers have always been a strong component of the City of Penticton and of Cherry Lane Shopping Centre. A special thank you to all the volunteers who work tirelessly for the community. A final appreciation to all of the customers who visit and shop at Cherry Lane. Thank you for your patronage and on going support. 
