ARO DIASPORA

A/W2021 LOOK-BOOK

About the

COLLECTION Aro Diaspora explores my Arochukwu cultural legacy, searching inwards to find the treasures engraved within Western African traditions and outward in modern advances to narrate a beautiful seamless story of history, present, and future. My inspiration stems not only from my West African culture, but also from my new-found fascination with Japanese traditions and cultures. The juxtaposition of these two cultures will lead to exciting links and contrasts that will reinforce the uniqueness of the collection.

About the

COLLECTION

The collection showcases a bright colour palette made up of sunny yellows and blood boiling reds to represent the grim reality of the maniac phases caused by my identity crisis. Leading themes of self-expression, isolation and dissociative encounters are developed through using artistic hand printing techniques (Lino), dynamic silhouettes amplified by beading / asymmetric cuts, and the metaphor of the “masquerade.” All these factors lead to a rich and eccentric collection that hopes to bring recognition to young diaspora youth who feel lost, confused, or ashamed of who they are. Aro Diaspora is a gender-neutral collection that creates an interchangeable design space for the autumn / winter season 2021. The collection is positioned in the mid-luxury market to target fashion-forward people who have a vision for utopian Africa and empowering the lives of LGBTQ + and BIPOC youth.

ARO DIASPORA A/W 2021

Rich display of artistic storytelling through print A statement by the designer: “The print was developed using distorted compositions of my self- portraits to express dissociation and confusion regarding my broken identity as a teenager. I achieved the print by hand, using lino and water based ink on enzyme washed linen fabric (mustard colour) After a week of air drying, I then went over it further, by hand painting into the negative spaces of the print. This combination helped to form an artistic language about rediscovering myself amidst the gaps of who I was. Much like the Japanese art ‘kintsukuroi’ which involves repairing broken pottery by mending areas of breakage with lacquer and gold, I used hand painting techniques within the gaps of my Lino print to express the same philosophy. Rather than disguising my broken past, I treated and repaired it as part of my own history. Filled with colour and my own personal artistic language.” Chioma okoro 2021
