Wi Exclusive Interview

and

Darren

Sarah, I love the story of how Darren proposed. Please tell our readers.

Darren had arranged for a hot air balloon ride in California, where we live. But, there we were in a hot air balloon and Darren starts a video and I’m like…”why is he doing this? I’m wanting to look at the scenery”. The video is set to music and there are places he has traveled to that he wants to take me. Still…I’m wondering what’s wrong with him - we are on a hot air balloon ride and the scenery is breathtaking! Wait a minute…there he is in the video at my house in Oklahoma, ringing the doorbell. Whaat??? He’s shaking my parents hand. He is asking my Dad for permission to marry me! This is a marriage proposal in a hot air balloon! Darren then said, “Sarah Dawn Cumby, will you“…and before he could finish, I’m jumping up and down saying “Yes! Yes! Yes!”

How did you choose your color palette? Darren definitely wanted blue. It is our favorite color. For a complement to the blue, we used Tiffany blue, pewter and coral. Did you have a theme of any kind for your wedding and reception? We met in New Orleans, so I’d say we had a New Orleans themed wedding. Our party favors were pralines, fleur de lis shot glasses imprinted with our names and we had New Orleans style lamp posts at the reception. Also, there is a dance in New Orleans called a second line dance. These are people who follow after the parades and dance with parasols and handkerchiefs. At the reception, the wedding party opened the doors and second line danced into the reception, the girls using

their bouquets and the guys used their handkerchiefs. They formed a soul train line and then Darren and I did our own second line dance into the reception! It was so fun! What was your favorite memory? Several: My Dad married us and that was extraordinarily special. Also, there was a running joke between my brother and Darren about kissing me, so when it came time for the kiss at the altar, Darren really made a production of it. The reception was really rocking, too, and everyone had so much fun! Was there anything that was requested by Darren? Darren wanted us to use blue as the main color and he wanted to have New

Orleans pralines. Are there any special memories that you care to share with our readers? We had jelly beans on the dessert table and jellybeans were also a wedding favor - which to some people might seem like an random thing. This was a special touch between my dad and me because he had nicknamed me Jellybean when I was a little girl. Was there anything that you “splurged on? My first thought was my dress and my shoes, but we also splurged on the cakes. We had an awe-

some wedding cake. The top layer was mocha, followed by layers of strawberry, lemon and Italian crème. Delicious! Darren loves cheesecake and we had three for the groom’s cake. The cakes must have been good because they were gone in 45 minutes! What was the best advice you were given as you planned the wedding? I was given a lot of advice but really the one thing that stuck was this: Even if something doesn’t happen and doesn’t go right - no one will notice! And, guess what??? Somehow, I walked down the aisle without my bouquet and no one noticed - not even me for a while! Enough said!

Christian was the opening act for Adam Carroll, a Texas folksinger and songwriter, at the Cicada Festival in Ontario, Canada, where Christian grew up. After the concert, they exchanged CD’s and an exchange of friendship and later, love began. Adam revisited Christian in Canada and soon asked her to visit him in the Lone Star State and eventually made her an Oklahoma bride, at the Bottle Cap Barn. In keeping with her creative spirit, Christian made her unique button bouquet and the boutonnieres. Very countrified! Adam had written a song called the Oklahoma Gypsy Shuffler and Christian had drink cups made with the imprint “Oklahoma Gypsy Shufflers”.

Christian was relaxed about the wedding, wanting it to unfold naturally into a beautiful, artistic wedding day. They had traveled to Oklahoma and found a rustic venue and a photographer that were perfect for the vision they had in mind. Catie Bartlett, their photographer, was in tune with the couple’s creative and artistic lifestyle and captured the essence of their wedding with her eye for detail and fun. Fellow musicians and songwriters were there to support the happy couple and following the ceremony, Christian says there was so much talent in the room, they just had to have a jam session with singing and laughter. She says the day unfolded exactly as it should have - even without much planning.

Expert ADVICE...

WEDDING AND R EC EPTION R E N TA L S Most brides have a Pinterest Board and files of wedding pictures that they love. Often, it is difficult to know where to start and how much it will cost to achieve the look or theme you are wanting. Rentals are the most cost effective way of turning your Pinterest dreams into reality. Whether you desire a chic, country, country chic, a small backyard BBQ or elegant opulence for your reception, the logical choice is rentals. Many rental companies, such as Factor 110 Events, have a large inventory of tables, chairs, linens (from burlap to the most elegant), china, flatware, and most anything else the bride might desire to have a memorable reception. Recently,

Sweetheart Linens, explained to me that they are a smaller, more specialized company offering a wide selection of tablecloths, chair covers and sashes for rent. Their customer is more of the DIY bride, although they do deliver and set up. Perhaps you are wanting bistro tables with long cloths and under lighting or large round tables with floor length cloths complete with plate chargers and napkins and coordinating centerpieces? Or, you’ve seen elegant sofa seating with lit cubes as cocktail tables. Though Oklahoma City offers a wide range of rentals, Brian Ferrell, president of Factor 110 Events, tells me he and his staff keep current of the latest trends in the industry and bring them home to Oklahoma brides. From an intimate home wedding to a large wedding at an area venue, Brian says their mission is to create an event that will transform your wedding and reception into an unforgettable and magical day.

WI Just Married Tips Alyssa and Cody

RealWedding.HerAdvice. A wedding is a once in a life time event and I know we all want it to be perfect. Here are a few ideas from my own experience. One idea I would suggest to a bride is to shop around, especially if you are on a budget. Prices vary so much for the same thing and it will pay off for you if you do your homework. We did all the decorations ourselves and this was a budget saver. I ordered our programs, favors and personalized koozies online. The fabric pom pom balls were the most time consuming, but I loved them! Make a checklist and include a column for prices and the name of the company you called. A checklist will help you so that you are not stressing about everything at once. Instead, you can take one step at a time. My bridesmaids were very helpful to me - they were my support team! We talked about everything - many times over! LOL One detail in our wedding that made it “ours” was my blue rose bouquet. On our six month anniversary of dating, Cody gave me blue roses so I knew I had to have them for my bouquet. We had our wedding at an Oklahoma vineyard and the wine was pure “Oklahoma”. The vineyard was very affordable and it was breathtaking. I also did a lot of online research for our photographer. I chose to meet with Kim Stubbs because she had won the Knot award. When I met with her and looked at her books, I fell in love! We had a local Italian restaurant cater our reception. The food was delicious and stress free on everyone. We served various beers and the wine from the vineyard. Our wedding cake was blue velvet. We left on our honeymoon 2 days after the wedding, which I highly recommend. Waiting for a few days after the wedding gives you time to relax, wind down and collect yourself. And, you need it! Lastly, I would give this advice: DON’T STRESS. This was my philosophy the whole time we were planning the wedding. If something wasn’t going the right way, I would just tell myself that as long as Cody was there and there was someone to marry us, nothing else really matters, and it’s true! Our wedding turned out perfect. It was more than I expected! Best wishes and happy planning!

honor to be asked to wrap the lazo around the couple during the Mass. After the ceremony, it’s time to party! Most Hispanic wedding receptions are lively, with plenty of great food and dancing. Often dancers in costume will come and perform the Mexican hat dance, Mariachis, salsa, and flamenco style dances. A big traditional activity at the reception is called the baile dolar - the money dance. Wedding guests take turns dancing with the newlywed couple and pin money on their clothes.

Another wedding custom is the wrapping of the lazo, which is an extra long rosary. The lazo is wound around the bride and groom in a figure eight, and demonstrates their union. It is a great

WI Debbie’s Tips MY ADVICE: Pick the top three things that matter most to you and concentrate on those areas. The reality is that we all have some kind of budget to work with. Sit down and decide what really matters, maybe for you it’s the food, music, and the flowers. For someone else it’s the dress, cake, and venue. Once that’s established, you can cut expenses in other areas and budget accordingly.
