Vanessa, how did you and Trevor meet? Trevor is a pharmacist and he works at a drug store that is famous for old fashioned orangeades. I had dropped in to have one and we struck up a conversation and orangeades lead to dates and that lead to marriage! It all started with an Orangeade! What is it that you love about Trevor? He has a big heart! And, a big smile. And, morals and Christian values. I love that about him. The squash blossom necklace in your bridal portraits at the Grisso Mansion is beautiful! Who did it belong to? The turquoise and silver squash blossom necklace is a family heirloom passed on to my mother. It had belonged to an Indian princess and is part of a matching set that also includes a ring, bracelet and ear rings. My Papa gave it to my grandmother many years ago. It was an honor for me to wear it. It is truly exquisite and a priceless treasure to our family. My grandmother had no idea that I would be wearing the necklace for my bridal portraits and I know my Granny will be pleased.

After the proposal, you had to plan a wedding. How did you get started? First, I chose a date and immediately booked the photographer that did my sister’s wedding - Kim Stubbs (who is awesome!). Next, I reserved my hometown church and booked a building at the Kingfisher Fairgrounds for our reception. What was your vision for the wedding and reception? I wanted our wedding day to be bright and colorful, summery, elegant - with sparkle and glam. Really, our wedding was perfect - I wouldn’t have changed a thing. Did you have a wedding theme? I would say Sparkle because that is a nickname of mine. My ear rings and bracelet, the cake decoration and mercury glass candles and vases all added sparkle to the wedding. We used vintage chandeliers for additional ambiance.

What was your favorite moment? I have several. I think my first favorite moment was when the minister pronounced us husband and wife. I felt I was the luckiest girl in the world. Then I would say my “two” first looks. The first one was when Trevor saw me for the first time and the second was a first look between my Dad and me. Both very touching memories for me. Did anything unusual happen? I nearly got married without a ring! The best man managed to lose it twice! It’s a good thing we got married before it could happen three times! What song did you dance to as husband and wife? We danced to Carrie Underwood’s Look at Me. I also want to mention that our father/daughter dance was to Tim McGraw’s My Little Girl. However, moments into the song…Scratchhhh… Dad and I did a dance medley including The Twist, Y.M.C.A. and Stayin’ Alive. To say we caught everyone off guard is an understatement!! Are there any other special memories that you would share? Yes! Trevor wrote me a love letter everyday for the week leading up to our wedding and they each had a different song phrase in them that made him think of me or that meant something to us or our relationship. I really wish I had the words to express how amazing my husband is, but words don’t do him justice. You would just have to know him like I do!

Looks we Love…a beautiful cake, mercury glass, bulldog cookies (Bentley and Bruiser)…

WI Interview... Donnie Bro Donnie Brown Celebrity We d d i n g Planner Donnie Brown was in town. Star of the Style Networks reality TV show Who’s Wedding Is It Anyway and author of Donnie Brown Weddings: From the Couture to the Cake, not to mention one of the world’s most prestigious celebrity wedding planners. Clearly, I was apprehensive about the interview. He’s such a BIG deal! I needn’t have worried. Donnie was nice, charming, and effortlessly made ME feel totally relaxed…isn’t it supposed to be the other way around??? According to his press release, the wedding day, for most people, is one of the most stressful days of their lives. So how has wedding planner, Donnie Brown survived more than 3,000 of them? He has a secret weapon. “I try to use humor on a dayto-day basis,” he says. “I think humor makes the day far more fun and the stress less burdensome.” When talking about weddings, it is clear Donnie lives and loves what he is doing. You can see the wheels turning with lightening speed as he explains his mission and dedication to brides. Hailing from Lubbock, TX. (just down the road from my hometown of Amarillo, TX.), he exudes confidence, flair, For Information on Advertising call 405.216.0747

wn ... One of a Kind and a genuine interest in every bride that walks through his doors. Entering his luxe 6th floor offices, a bride has breathtaking views of Dallas and is immediately treated as royalty. Booking 95% of the brides that come to him to plan their weddings, Donnie and his team are busy, both in Dallas, Los Angeles New York City and Oklahoma City. What are his weddings like? Show stoppers! The kind of dream weddings we see in the movies. During our talk, Donnie almost sounds clairvoyant. He says his greatest skill is reading between the lines when meeting with a client and developing her ideas after only a few minutes of conversation. Donnie says his “visions” for the wedding develop very quickly as he listens and immediately has creative inspirations to offer. He has been privileged to develop a following of loyal and happy brides and says, “his brides trust me totally.” Everything, and I mean everything, passes through Donnie’s hands, right down to the mother of the bride’s jewelry and Spanx, if someone needs them. He demands perfection from his clients as well as himself and his staff and the results are beyond reproach, as evidenced by the demand for Donnie Brown. “Clearly, a low-key wedding is much simpler to get through, “ says Brown, who has also worked with actresses Dixie Carter and Emma Thompson as well as the Democratic National Committee, The Dallas Cowboys, and other sport athletes and A-list celebrities to show his amazing versatility. “One thing to note is that there is so much excitement surrounding a high-profile wedding or event. Otherwise, it’s just like working with the couple next door. A couple that has managers, agents, and publicists, that is!” In 2001,

WI Donnie Brown ...

Brown landed a high-profile celebrity client when country star LeAnn Rimes and fiancé Deane Sheremet hired him to create their internationally published wedding day. Donnie was in Oklahoma City as the wedding planner for OU alumni and the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle, Gerald McCoy and his fiancée, Ebony, who recently wed at The Reynolds Performing Arts Center on the University of Oklahoma campus. Brown’s versatility and flare was again evident for the reception and was held in a custom-built tent structure at the Duck Pond, also on campus. They were in good hands, choosing one of the few wedding planners who could handle a wedding of this magnitude - 250 guests that included an elegant sit-down dinner. Ebony wanted to make a platinum wedding statement and Brown pulled out all the stops to make it extraordinary. 1,000’s of sparkling crystals, like tiny chandeliers, hung from filament suspended on a grid above the head banquet table. Computer controlled lighting could change the crystals to create a breathtaking, shimmering light show. For Information on Advertising call 405.216.0747

Emily had envisioned an elegant backyard reception at her parent’s home but was nearly outdone by the tornado that had struck the night before. Even though the wedding rehearsal was not completed, the rehearsal dinner was spent in the basement at Remington Park and the grounds of her father house had been damaged, Emily and Kris had the wedding day they had hoped for. Kris’s good natured groomsmen cleared the damage in the backyard the day of the wedding to make sure all things were a “go”. The tent was erected, the DJ set up his equipment and 250 guests arrived to celebrate the love and marriage of this happy… and blessed couple. Emily chose the vibrant spring palette of coral, accented with seafoam and gray. Her Mom and aunt brought a special gift for her on the day of the wedding. Their great, great-grandmother’s diamond brooch was given to Emily to wear in her wedding. But where and how? Her Mom’s

friend came to the rescue with a sewing kit (great idea!) and sewed the brooch onto the top of Emily’s veil! A lovely accessory! So, at the end of the day, the couple arrived at the reception in the sleek red Pontiac Bonneville, where a party atmosphere was unfolding, cocktails were served, a beautiful food buffet was assembled in the tent, plentiful seating was in the “renovated” backyard, and Emily and Kris, along with their guests, felt relaxed and happy and enjoyed the evening immensely.

Thank you to all the brides who have trusted us with their wedding dreams. Brides are just a big part of our day to day life and it seems as we pore over their photographs and write their stories, they become our friends, too.

A Bride’s Guide www.okcweddingideas.com

WI ARTICLE - A Bride’s Jou Abbey Volkman

We d d i n g C o r r d i nato r Abbey Volkman, wedding coordinator at the Skirvin Hotel has worked with 100’s of brides to plan their wedding day and reception. She is well versed in all aspects of wedding planning from the tiniest details to the overall big picture. She has emerged as one of the most capable and creative wedding coordinators in Oklahoma City.

A BRIDE’S JOURNEY TO THE ALTAR...FIRST IN A 4 PART SERIES I’m ENGAGED!! To say I was happy was an understatement - I was ecstatic! After helping countless brides plan weddings for over 5 years, now it is my turn! I’m getting married! After coming down from the clouds and my re-entry to Earth, I knew I had to begin my own planning. Would my experience and expertise help me plan my (and maybe your) perfect wedding? Yes! Without a doubt! First things first. After the proposal and setting a date and after the giddiness subsided

(ha!), my first thought was…not a dress, not a color palette, not flowers…girls, you have to get your venue booked ASAP. So many brides wait and are disappointed to find their venues are booked a year in advance or venues available are not within the budget. I wanted someplace a little more modern. I’m not a rustic kind of gal, so I needed a more “luxe” location - something a little more posh. It’s never a quick or easy decision and our options ran the gamut, but finally we chose a venue we loved and that was a BIG item we could cross off our list. Just as you infuse peppermint into vodka, I wanted our wedding to be infused with my fiancé and my personalities. We are an energetic, social, joyful couple (maybe even goofy) and it is so important that the wedding be a wedding that our friends and family will say “that was so Abbey and Eddie”. We want this party to absolutely reflect who we are as a couple! Side note: It was important to Eddie that we write our own vows but I wanted the tradition of saying the same words that so many couples have said over the years - very traditional vows. However, after mulling it over, I realized it’s our ceremony, why not do both!?! So now we are speaking both traditional vows as well as reading our own. rney to the Altar...part 1 Entertainment is a priority of mine. So many times I see brides at their receptions upset because the party is… well, just lame. I think so much rides on your entertainment, whether you go with a band or a DJ. There is nothing worse than a human iPod with no guest interaction or any real knowledge of who the bride and groom are as a couple. I think your Master of Ceremonies is as much responsible for shaping the outcome of your reception as you are! Why not be on the same page? Eddie and I are big dancers and we definitely want our guests to get out there and join us. Spend extra time interviewing your DJ/band and be assured that who you hire will be awesome and that everyone will have fun. Most brides choose a theme and I’m no exception. My colors are plum and platinum - and as I often say - not purple and silver! I think these colors are a pretty mix of modern and elegant. Soft colors are beautiful, too, but Eddie and I are so much more “in your face”. We wanted a color palette to match us. As I’ve said from the get-go…I want no part of my wedding to say “simple”. Modern and elegant will be the inspiration words we use to carry out our wedding décor, flowers and details. Lastly, for this installment, I want to suggest having a binder to keep all your paperwork and notes in. Pinterest certainly helps, too. What bride hasn’t benefited from that?! Your budget dictates most everything. No matter how much you know about weddings and events, the sticker shock is always a bit severe for a moment. But, you know what? Sometimes there are nice surprises-- a little extra here and there, rather than the other way around! Coming in September I’ll see you in September with more insights of my own wedding planning and hope to help you with your wedding, too! I’ll be addressing photography, floral choices and bridal
