AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY OKLAHOMA GIRLS STATE
Councilwoman Nikki Nice Empowers Girl State Delegates
Vol 78 Issue 2 May 2022
Oklahoma City Councilwoman Nikki Nice visited with 2022 Girls State and delivered an excellent speech of empowerment. Nikki Nice has an impressive record: she's the 10th woman to be elected, 2nd woman of color, recipient of the Opio Toure Medallion award, Finer Womanhood Award, and Citizen of the Year Award among many others. She runs Ward 7, a distinct set of square footage that she takes care of. Ward 7 is the place that she was born, raised, educated, and spiritually nurtured in. She is committed to moving Oklahoma City "Forward Together". Her speech focused on how to face challenges, giving back to your community, and that we can only make a difference together. Councilwoman Nice faced not only the challenge of being a woman, but being a Black woman. She encouraged us to face our challenges instead of letting them discourage us, as they often do. Because no matter what, there will always be challenges but we should use them to ignite our fire and drive us into achieving our goals instead of letting them drown us. Councilwoman Nice was very down to earth and humble when she spoke. Her humble demeanor made her speech outstanding! She encouraged the delegates to be ambitious and shoot for the stars. If the delegates can take anything away from her speech, it should be that our race shouldn't separate us as women. We need to stick together and challenge the things that we all face together in a sisterhood.
"KEEP YOUR FACE ALWAYS TOWARD THE SUNSHINE, AND THE SHADOWS WILL FALL BEHIND YOU."
- Walt Whitman Any challenge in your way can be worked through with the help of other women. Essentially, we need to aim high and uplift other women; if we do, we can rule the world and inspire change for our nation as well as our respective careers. Chisholm City's great Junior Counselor Alivia Jeter’s encapsulated the feeling of many of us listening by sharing, "I really enjoyed Councilwoman Nikki Nice's inspirational speech because it left me and the other girls feeling empowered and ready to step forward, use our voices, and change the world together." -Alicia McGhee, Chisholm City
