he recent full moon phase triggered another run of shell cracker and blue gill catches. We started our week by catching limits of large shell cracker and blue gill.

The fish were in very shallow water around spawning beds; some were locked onto the beds while others were milling around the periphery of the bedding area. We tried several different baits, and each of them provided bites for us.

The best bait overall was a grass shrimp skewered on a small hook.

Crickets were a close second, and red worms were our backup plan.

We tried used a small bobber and also tight-lined our bait on the bottom, each worked at times with a small bobber providing the better results.

We would start the morning fishing the deeper edges or drop-offs where the fish some of the fish would be staging to move up later in the day. As the sun rose higher in the sky and the day progressed, we would see the fish move shallower and then move right onto the spawning beds. The next new

moon phase should provide another great opportunity to catch pan fish as will the May full moon.

Bass fishing is steady as she goes, with big fish falling prey to shiners and big numbers of fish being caught on artificial baits.

Top-water baits, flukes, speed worms, senkos and trick worms are all working daily. A skinny dipper or trixie shark will still draw strikes from bigger fish in general. It’s a great time to be a resident of Okeechobee.

Fishing is great and should continue to be for a long time.
