SHORTHORN

History

The Shorthorn Breed of cattle originated on the northeastern coast of England in the counties of North Cumberland, Durham, York and Lincoln. The first real development of the breed occurred in the valley of the Tees River about 1600. The large-framed cattle that inhabited this fertile valley became known as the Teeswater cattle. The breed later spread to Scotland and then to America in 1783. When first brought to Virginia, the breed had attained the name Durham. It was the first improved breed to be imported here and the qualities the animals possessed put them in great demand, rapidly spreading their influence across America. Shorthorns were popular with America’s early settlers. They valued this breed for meat and milk and found Shorthorns a willing power for the wagon and plow as well. The breed followed, sometimes pulling pioneer wagons across the Great Plains and into the far west. In 1834, Felix Renick of Chillicothe made the first major importation of Shorthorns to Ohio. On October 29, 1836, he held the first Shorthorn auction in Ohio. The cattle sold for huge amounts ranging from $400 to $2,225. A monument was erected to mark this historical milestone. The Shorthorn breed is one of the oldest American breed organizations in existence today. Shorthorns and Polled Shorthorns are registered in the same Herd Book. Over 45 other breeds of cattle show traces of Shorthorn / Polled Shorthorn in their parentage, including Belgian Blues, Santa Gertrudis, Angus, Red Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Beefmaster, Maine-Anjou and Milking Shorthorns. The breed has been a part of many “firsts”. The first registry for any breed of beef cattle was Coates Herd Book in 1822. The American Shorthorn Herd Book was the first of any breed to be published in the U.S. and was started in 1846. The first breed organization in America was the American Shorthorn Association which was founded in 1872. The first major breed to be developed in the U.S. was Polled Shorthorns, originating in Minnesota in 1881. Shorthorns are the world’s most numerous beef breed, but their numbers in North America do not reflect their world popularity. They are considered to be the most docile, easily-handled beef animals in the world. Shorthorns have long been known for their maternal traits, milking ability and calving ease. Now the breed is excelling in growth and carcass traits, possessing the ability to produce a choice carcass while maintaining leanness. 54 | OSBA Membership Directory

Winkle recognized by ASA In 1985, his parents, Jeff and Susie Winkle, started Cedar Lane Farms in Cedarville, Ohio, after working for Isaac’s Land and Cattle. Once Scott reached 4-H age, Jeff and Susie decided to get back into the Shorthorn breed. Jeff’s family had been involved since the 1920’s, making Scott a third generation Shorthorn breeder. The Winkle’s purchased a bred cow from the McLaughlin (10 M’s) family and a bull from Waukaru Farms. This allowed Scott to start building his own herd as a junior member and he has been expanding it for the last 10 years. Scott spent eight years working for and traveling with his childhood friend, Josh Greenhorn and the Greenhorn Cattle Scott Winkle received the Lawrence Grathwohl Shorthorn HerdsCompany. He is recognized by those in the man of the Year award at the 2020 North American International cattle industry as someone that is always Livestock Expo willing to help whether that be dialing one in or pep talks outside the ring. Since 2014, Scott and his girlfriend Katie have been the Ohio Junior Shorthorn Association advisors, leading the state to multiple Outstanding State Awards at the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference. Scott and Katie assist junior members attending the NJSS with their projects, speeches and more. The role as advisor has showcased his passion for building youth in order to build our breed. When not working as a machinist in Cincinnati, Ohio, he devotes his time to helping the Kennedy Family of Seaman, Ohio, as well as other juniors and their families across Ohio. Cedar Lane Farm raised CLF Foolin’ Around 1401 ET, a Sonny son out of a full sib to CF Bravo. This bull was a three time undefeated Ohio and Kentucky State Fair Grand Champion Bull. Many of his calves have gone on to be successful at NAILE, NJSS and other shows. Scott enjoys working with his family at Cedar Lane Farm while assisting juniors all across Ohio. The Herdsman of the Year is a prestigious award sponsored by the Shorthorn Foundation and honored with a trophy buckle in memory of Lawrence Grathwohl. Lawrence Grathwohl was a loyal member of the ASA who passed at the young age of 41. He was best known for raising Shorthorn cattle, which he showed all across the country. The award is voted on by fellow Shorthorn breeders and announced during the National Shorthorn Show each year. Congratulations to Scott Winkle for being selected by his peers for this special award - The 2020 Lawrence Grathwohl Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year. It is well deserved.
