A MINUTE WITH THE MEENTS Marketing purebred livestock is always a challenge to reach new customers while maintaining your past customer base. This summer the American Hereford Association has released “Herefords on Demand”, a new program to help assist the members of AHA with the newest, most modern, up to date online catalog production system. “Hereford on Demand” is a tremendous marketing tool for breeders no matter what size of Hereford operation you are. This exciting system will allow private treaty sale listings, select small sale events, video sale offerings, show heifer prospect sales, sire directories, as well as traditional sale catalogs. Live expected progeny differences, (EPDs) updates that are searchable within an individual catalog or across all catalogs will be available with “Herefords on Demand”. This is a great opportunity for all Hereford breeders when buying or selling. The process to create a “Hereford on Demand” catalog has been created to be as user-friendly as possible with four steps to enter information for the catalog. These steps will guide the breeder through entering contact information, sale details, lot information, and then selecting a layout form. A Creative Services staff member will then work directly with the breeder to approve the catalog prior to posting it to the AHA website. Breeders can also order a small number to be printed for mailing. MAKE YOUR CATTLE BETTER TODAY BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO MARKET THEM TOMORROW! Today you now have a new system to assist you in marketing your Hereford genetics. Take advantage, by contacting Hereford Publication, INC, Creative Service Department, at 816-842-3757. MAKE YOUR CATTLE BETTER TODAY BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO MARKET THEM TOMORROW! John Meents American Hereford Association, Field Staff jmeents@hereford.org Cell: 419-306-7480

Sandra Ostgaard Memorial Fund Sandy loved Hereford cattle. She would brag about their docile temperament and the sheer beauty of the breed but more than anything else she loved her Hereford Family. Sandy grew up on a Hereford farm, she exhibited Herefords all through her youth years, she served as the Ohio Hereford Junior Advisor, Ohio Hereford Women President and most recently as a Director for the National Hereford Women. Her avid love for the breed has been passed down to her children and now grandchildren. Sandy and her husband, John, are long time supporters of many things Hereford, especially things involving youth. The Ohio Hereford Women have created the “Sandra Ostgaard Memorial Fund”. In memory of Sandy, this fund will pay one entry fee to the Ohio Premier Show for all first-time Ohio Junior Hereford Association members that will be exhibiting. Donations may be made by sending a check to the Ohio Hereford Women with Sandra Ostgaard in the memo line. After retirement, he continued to raise beef cattle and operate the home farm, which in 2019 has been honored as a Bicentennial farm in the state of Ohio. He was a member of several livestock and agriculture organizations. He received his 60th year pin from the Sharon Masonic Lodge in 2006. He was a member of Caldwell United Methodist Church. Lorin had a sincere interest in people, asking questions about their lives and passions until he knew them well. His love of poker led to many family events teaching the next generations to play blackjack and 5-card stud. He played trumpet in high school and loved showing his grandsons how to play the mouth harp. He loved traveling to Rose Bowls, Ireland, France, and to national cattle shows and Extension conventions. His favorite sight was watching newborn calves jump around in the meadows. He leaves his wife, Eleanor Everly Sanford, whom he married December 22, 1946; one daughter, Ann Sanford of Toledo; and two grandsons, Sanford Everly Bennett (Christine Fair) of Toledo, and Robert Russell Bennett of Austin, Texas; and he leaves a brother, Donald (Patricia) Sanford, along with many nieces, nephew, and great-nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister, Irma Sanford Wheeler. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Caldwell United Methodist Church, 537 Main Street, Caldwell, Ohio, 43724.

Jerry Ballard

Nashport - Jerry Ballard, 80, threw his last bale of hay on June 29th, 2019, while surrounded by family at Morrison House in Zanesville, Ohio. He was born August 15, 1938 in Middletown, Ohio to Benjamin “Floyd” and Nancy “Nannie” Louisa Ballard. In his early years he could be seen riding on the backs of pigs as he dreamed of life on the range as a cowboy. After graduating from Middletown High School, he achieved his dream as the entire Ballard clan moved to Nashport, Ohio to begin cattle farming. Walnut Hills Farm, which later became Ballard Stock Farm, was one of the preeminent Polled Hereford and Angus cattle breeders in North America. Over the span of almost 60 years, Jerry won numerous local, state and national Grand Champion and Premier Breeder awards at many fairs and shows.

Jerry demonstrated his well-known assertive nature by vigorously pursuing and winning the affections of the magnificently attractive woman he saw at a Frazeysburg High School basketball game. The woman in question, Patricia Ann Mercer, soon became his bride in 1962. Knowing that he needed help running his expanding empire and being particularly aware of how much good help cost...he and Pat had three kids: Jay, Ray and Jeri Ann. Over the years Jerry became known for a number of things. He was a great husband and father, an outstanding cattleman, a garden hose assassin and a world-class artist who worked in swear words much like Rembrandt worked in oils. At times he was a cattleman/poet who was often heard to say, “ok - make fun of the old man” (usually meant that he’d rather we not), “while you’re up” (usually associated with filling his water glass or changing the TV channel...used even if no one was actually up), “Sears called and the TV is in” (which accidentally let all of the kids know what they were getting for Christmas), “yo boys” (used as a rallying cry to roust his two sons on the weekend for morning chores), “my three sons” (uttered during his and Pat’s 50th wedding Anniversary, when he meant to say ‘kids.’ His Son-in-Law, Bob, was particularly shocked by this statement.), “get out and get the stink blowd off you” (also used to motivate his kids to get out of the house and do something productive). The true measure of a person is how they affected the people they leave behind. With that as a guideline, Jerry was an extraordinary man who will be dearly missed by many. He is survived by Patricia, his loving wife of 56-years; his children Jay, Ray and Jeri Ann - who are all very different, but highly successful; his daughter-in-law, Dale, and his son-in-law, Bob, his grandchildren Riley and Logynn as well as many extended family members and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held for friends and family. There will be no public funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to Christ’s Table, 28 South 6th Street, Zanesville, OH 43701.
