A MINUTE WITH THE MEENTS

The 2017 National Junior Hereford Expo “Showin for the Roses” is now history. What a historical event it was! There were over 900 junior exhibitors from 35 states in attendance. A huge thank you goes out to the National Junior Board of Directors, the Andrew Matheny Family, and the Don Cole Family along with Amy Cowan, and her staff for putting on the largest Hereford Junior National ever. Besides record number of cattle, the quality of cattle was superb. Of the 136 classes shown each and every one was tough, tough, tough to win. There were some really awesome heifers that were standing fifth, sixth, seventh or even last in almost every class. Congratulations to all the junior exhibitors for doing an outstanding job, and bringing there “A” game to Louisville. I wanted to share a few of my highlights of the week: 1. Junior Board Member, Mason Blinson sang “My Old Kentucky Home” and past Junior Board Member Keysto Stoltz played “Call to the Post” on his trumpet prior to the championship drive. 2. The barn was filled with moms, dads, grandpas, grandmas, and juniors having a great time all week long. They were playing cards, playing corn hole, or just enjoying hanging out with family and friends. I call that family bonding. It was neat to witness! 3. Joe Rickabaugh, Tommy Coley, Trey Befort, and I cooked 65 three pound beef tri tips for the tailgate party. It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun. They were consumed in an hour and a half! 4. Cattle check in, showmanship line up, heifer, steer and bull line up went as smooth as ever. I believe not one young person missed a class all week long. If so, my goal was reached! 5. The band, Nashville Crush, did a bang up job entertaining all the people at the tail gate party. I thought they were a top notched country band, and you possibly might hear them in concert in Grand Island, NE. 6. There was a family who has been showing Herefords for 38 years, and I think have been to almost every Hereford Junior National. The family won their first class ever at a Hereford Junior National Show. That moment was a pleasure to witness, and seeing their smiles as the boy exited the ring, and moved to the picture backdrop. If you and your family have never been to a Hereford Junior National, I want to encourage you to put that on your “To DO List”. Next year it will be in Grand Island, NE, July 1 – 7, 2018. Save the Date! MAKE YOUR CATTLE BETTER TODAY BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO MARKET THEM TOMORROW! A note from the President............ Hello Hereford Enthusiast: President’s letter; It seems this spring and summer have gone by very quickly. The show season for our Juniors began at Wooster, followed by Switzerland of Ohio., Premier Show, the Junior National in Louisville and finally the Ohio State Fair. A great set of Herefords was seen at each and even better a great set of Buckeye Juniors involved. Louisville was the scene of many OBJHA members along with families supporting these youngsters. A big ‘shout out’ goes to all in attendance and a great thank you to Sarah Helsinger for coordinating the meals serving to all families and to Dale Decker for super Breakfasts every day and to Jay Reed for being the chef along to all the families who provided lunch and or dinner each day. If you have a chance please mark your calendar to attend the 2018’s Junior national in Nebraska the first of July.. you will be in for a very memorable time. Also don’t forget to visit the Hereford barn at FSR and the Futurity/Field day at Old Washington. Marsha Farno President Buckeye Hereford Association

Ohio Buckeye Juniors in the News

Ohio was well represented well at the National Junior Hereford Expo in Louisville, Kentucky recently. In the contests on the weekend, Kelsey Decker shined in the photography contest, receiving first place honors in the Enhanced category. She also placed third in the Hereford Cattle and the People categories. We had a couple of young juniors participate in the pee wee speech contest. Emma Lewis and Augustin Burwell showed their speaking talents at a young age! You could see Mason Weber practicing his Individual Sales all week. His hard work paid off as he earned second place. The Judging Contest was held Monday and Ohio is proud to have the high individuals in the Pee Wee and Senior Divisions! Madelynn Baney was first place pee wee and Keayla Harr was first place senior. Ohio also boasted TWO nominations for the coveted Herdsman Award. Both Keayla Harr and Emily Beanblossom were nominated and represented our state well throughout the week and their careers. Outstanding Ohio Pictured is Emily Beanblossom & Keayla Harr, Junior member was nominations for Herdsman of the Year. Dylan Evoniuk. Retiring junior members were Kyndall Williams and Emily Beanblossom.

Emily Beanblossom exhibited the Champion Bred & Owned Cow/Calf pair and went on to win the overall National Champion Cow/Calf Award with HH Pearls Uno 576A, a February 2015 female sired by NJW 73S W18 Hometown 10Y ET with her January bull calf sired by RST Times A Wastin 0124. Congratulations to all the participants at the National Junior Hereford Expo. Friendships and memories were evident through the week. Thank you to all that pitched into help for the week, including all the brought food or helped with our display. Thank you to Dale Decker and Jay Reed who mastered breakfast and the grill. A special thank you goes out to our “show mom Sarah Helsinger for organizing all the meals for the week and helping us keep functions on track!

Some of those projects are Ohio State Fair awards for all Juniors that show a Hereford Heifer in Breeding Showmanship, Showmanship awards for The Jr. Premiere Show (when needed), to run and help sponsor The Ohio Hereford Queen, hospitality on sale day at The Ohio Beef Expo., and other things that come up (like 75th Anniversary Celebrations)!!! We love new members and value our old ones. Please send $30.00 to Janet Earl , treasurer of The Ohio Hereford Women at 7552 Lisbon Road, Lisbon, Ohio 44432.
