CUYAHOGA RIVER

Irish immigrants settle in Irishtown Bend and Whiskey Island.

1848

Irishtown grows denser as a result of booming industrial job opportunities. The residence of John Connors, who emigrated from Ireland in 1849, from 1852 until his death in 1906. Connors was employed as a laborer on Cleveland’s docks; as of 1900 he was a full-time employee on the Erie Railroad coal dock located adjacent to his home across West River Road. He raised a family of seven children, five of whom lived to adult age.

1880s

West 25th Street is a vibrant corridor by 1917. Excavation for the future trolley tunnel is just beginning.

1917

Dredging and widening of the Cuyahoga River begins in the 1920s. Irishtown Bend dredging project is completed in 1938.

1920s

LEDERER BUILDING

Much of the site is cleared as new housing is built in the 1960s.

FRANKLIN ALLEY

1964

CMHA’s Riverview Tower, built in 1964, has 498 units dedicated to senior housing.

Today

Ohio City Farm is supported by innovative local private-public partnerships and is jointly managed by Riverview Towers tenants, CMHA, and Ohio City Inc.

Today

The Refugee Response, based here, supports over 60 refugees each year through initiatives such as REAP (Refugee Employment Agricultural Program)

Today

Nearly 500 miles of regional trails connect diverse landscapes in Greater Cleveland, from Cuyahoga Valley National Park to Lake Erie.

Today

SHIPPING CHANNEL

The Cuyahoga River shipping channel supports a $3.5 billion shipping industry and 20,000 workers. The Port has played a leadership role in the environmental health of the river, with the end goal of getting the Cuyahoga River delisted as an Area of Concern for the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

How can a new vision for Irishtown Bend celebrate this rich history, place, and potential?
