Frazier family learns life lessons from BEST, other youth competitions Story and Photos by Amy Beth Graves

he first year competing at the Ohio Cattlemen Association’s BEST show was memorable for the Frazier family because of what their children took home. It wasn’t trophies, money or other honors, though. Instead it was a life lesson. “The first year we had no idea what to do and took two commercial cows. The kids shut the gate at every show. A guy came up to them and said ‘Don’t look like that – if you learn how to lose gracefully, you’ll be the best winner overall’,” said Alice Frazier as she reflected on the competition. “That’s what the show did – it taught them how to lose and not be upset.” But the show did much more than that for the Frazier family in Jackson County. It inspired Tedd and Alice Frazier’s children, Haley and Taylor, to become more competitive with show cattle. It also became a real family affair. Alice serves on the BEST 8 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | The Ring 2012

committee and Burroughs & Frazier Farms, a recent partnership, was a sponsor for this year’s BEST Program. “Losers always succeed at something,” summed up Haley, who is now 12 years old and has three years of showing under her belt. This year she showed the Reserve Champion Bred and Owned Heifer with her ShorthornPlus. Besides Shorthorns, the family typically keeps MainTainers and crossbreds. “To be a good winner, you have to be a good loser,” Tedd elaborated. “Just because you close the gate doesn’t mean you’re a loser; it gives you something to work for.” Work is something that the entire Frazier family knows well. Alice is medical director in Pike County for ER services, covering five hospitals, and Tedd recently won the Republican bid for sheriff in the November election. With no Democrats or Independents on the ballot, he will take office next January.

Feature Campaigning for sheriff was so time consuming that the family had to hire somebody to help out at Frazier Family Farms, located in Jackson. It also meant that Tedd couldn’t go to all the cattle shows. Besides the BEST series, the family competes all over, including at county fairs, North American International Livestock Exhibition, Kentucky Beef Expo, Ohio Beef Expo and the Missouri State Fair. The family occasionally travels to Missouri where Tedd grew up and his family still has a commercial cattle farm. Some of the cattle wind up at the Ohio farm until they are sold at nearby feedlots. “Some families give toys to their kids on their birthdays. My kids get cattle and fainting goats. I’ve always been into cattle because my wife likes to eat beef. It took a long time for her to admit that you had better beef out there than out of the freezer, didn’t it?” Tedd said, teasing his wife. Tedd and Alice met in Missouri when she was going to medical school. When it came time to return to Ohio to finish up her education, Tedd said “I’m going back with you if it’s OK” as Alice recalled and he went to a law force academy in Springfield where Alice grew up. The couple bought an 11.5 acre farm in 2001 and worked at fixing it up and adding more land. They built a barn and fenced in the property. The family is currently in the process of purchasing about 500 acres that they have been leasing and using to grow hay and run the cattle on. They put in a pond and have been busy putting in a frost free water tank. “We’re working on getting it set up before I take office,” Tedd said. With her medical background, Alice does AI (a procedure she jokes that is not very different than for a human), C-sections and shots. Tedd, who said that when he was young he couldn’t wait to leave the family farm, discovered he missed it and now spends his days sitting on a tractor during hay season.

Every year the Fraziers buy two to three heifers as they build up their own stock for their children who keep track of all the animals’ names and what year they were born. The kids tend to have themes in mind when they name their cattle such as Mud Pie, Peanut Butter and Oreo, named after pies. There are also silly names such as Darth Vader, Johnnie Walker and Shorty. Their friends often come over and help out in the barn, which Tedd described as being kid friendly. The siblings have their duties divided up – Haley takes care of the heifers and Taylor the steers. The show cattle are the kids’ responsibility, and they even help make breeding decisions. “Our kids don’t play sports in school because their sport is cattle,” Tedd said. When Taylor piped up that he wanted to play baseball, Alice was quick to say it was a definite possibility. “If he can show dedication to this, then you know he’s got the respect and dedication needed for the next job,” she said of her son. The couple pointed out the benefits of having the children run their own show cattle operation.

Taylor and his older sister Haley are in charge of taking care of the family's show cattle. The Ring 2012 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | 9

Feature “It leaves them with a business that they can run and still have some profit from,” Alice said. “4-H taught that originally. If you take a project and you start with it and work your way through it, there is a positive end even though you may not place.” The Fraziers said they particularly like the BEST program because it is a series of shows and keeps youths active during the winter. “I like it because we rarely go on family vacations and get to have family time,” Taylor said. His father added that with winter being a slow time on the farm, the family likes participating in BEST because they “make new friends and get to hang out as a family.” It was at their first BEST competition that the Fraziers ran into Chad Burroughs who was watching his nephew compete. They became friends over the years (Chad also is in law enforcement) and last January they merged their businesses to form Burroughs & Frazier Farms. Their rewards program offers $1,000 to any breeder that raises a state champion market steer or heifer bred by one of their bulls and $500 for a state reserve champion. “We were trying to figure out how to keep the kids making a little money for college and how to run a business where they have profit and enjoy working at it, and Chad and

10 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | The Ring 2012

I got to talking and he said ‘Do you want to go into a partnership?’” Tedd said. Chad described the Fraziers as “outstanding people who are honest and hardworking. They are good people who try to be helpful to youths throughout Ohio.” Stephanie Sindel, BEST coordinator, also praised the Frazier family. “They’ve been active since the kids started and are all about helping kids all across the state compete,” she said. Competing in the BEST and other livestock shows is important for youths because they learn the value of hard work, social skills and how to get along with others, Tedd said. “You could take a $50,000 animal out there and if the kid doesn’t know how to do showmanship, then all you have is an animal. The BEST and other kids’ programs show them how to do it,” he said. “They can’t learn this in a classroom – they can only learn by seeing or doing. They are learning more and more that everything has a little trick to it.” Taylor is starting to do well in shows – he had the 2011 Ohio Beef Expo Champion Shorthorn Heifer – and he has a simple explanation for why he likes to compete. “Just for the joy of having something to work for,” he said.

Talk. type. Tweet. Tips on how to best utilize media to get your message heard. Compiled by Julie White

Today’s consumers want to know more about where their food comes from. With the average American now three generations removed from farm life, cattle producers have a long road ahead of them and a lot of people to educate. Thankfully, there are countless resources to help spread the word. Let’s learn about a few...

Talk .

Every beef producer, young and old, can share a story about themselves. Daren Williams, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Executive Director of Communications, shares some tips on how to effectively communicate with a consumer.

Listen Consumers often perceive farmers as less interested in listening to consumers and more keen on just defending the status quo. In reality, as farmers we have always known that keeping the status quo is not sufficient. We’ve always been making changes from generation to generation. Don’t take questions as criticism. Someone asking questions about how you raise livestock does not equal criticism. Consumers are asking because they want to know. Find common Ground, not differences Common ground with consumers can be found on almost every issue. For example: Consumers are concerned how food production impacts the environment; cattle producers are concerned about this as well.

14 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | The Ring 2012

Share your story Be willing to share your story and communicate your commitment to meeting the consumer’s expectations. Don’t get hung up on the facts and figures and instead talk about what you do every day—this is what you’ll know best. Consumers want to know how you raise livestock and why. Be ready Is your farm in show shape? If someone visited your farm today, will they be able to see your commitment from providing the best care for your animals to having the most minimal environmental impact as possible? Pay attention to what’s going on in the news and stay up to date on current events. Remember the MESSAGE: We are working to continuously improve whether it’s in animal care or environmental stewardship.

Feature Some think of it as an online journal, and others more like a website. However you view it, a blog can be a powerful tool with a broad reach. Crystal Blin, an avid blogger and advocate for agriculture, gives advice from lessons learned in the blogosphere.

Q: Why have a blog? think a blog is a really great way for A: Ipeople to learn more about yourself, your family, your philosophy and it allows you to connect with others on a deeper level. What I love about blogs is that they allow you to be flexible with your message. Blogs are easy to manage yourself. You can update your information instantly on your blog, instead of having to wait for a webmaster to update your website.

Blogger or Wordpress and there are agricultural companies that now offer the service of creating a blog design for you. Pictures are extremely important in terms of design. I never post a blog without a photo in it. One of the most important sections of your blog is an about page. You should have an easy way for people to find out more information about you or your farm and how to contact you. My about page is probably one of the most heavily visited pages on my blog.

Q: Should I blog? Q: I have a blog. Now what? think with blogging and this is really an easy way to follow your A: Iwith A: Providing any social media, if you’re not planblog is important. On the Blogger ning on using it consistently, don’t bother creating an account. I think it is really important to have fresh content up there and especially with blogging. It needs to have fresh content a minimum of one time a week if not a couple times a week. People only come to your blog if you have new information being posted regularly. So do you have enough time to post consistently on a blog? I also think that for some people that might not be interested in building a website yet, a blog is a really good way to start off.

Q: How do I get started? talk about design first. Your A: Let’s blog does not have to be elabo-

rately designed, but it has to still be eye pleasing. There are pre-made blog designs whether you are using

platform, you can follow the blog by joining it through Google. The other option is to have a follow by e-mail button on your blog. This is another way people can be notified when there are new posts online. Also, share your blog on your social media sites. Blogging is very much a community. Don’t expect people to comment on your page or read your blog if you are not reading or commenting on other’s. I like to say comments are like candy. It always feels great to get a comment so return the favor. Include some way to track the traffic to your blog, because I probably average 1 in 100 people who read my blog will comment. I use Google analytics which is a free service. That’s probably one of the most valuable things.

The way in which Americans communicate with each other has been changing drastically in recent years. This shift is being pushed by the way that individuals interact with each other.

By Mike Haley, Simmental producer in Wayne County Ohio who is actively using social media to share agriculture’s story. Instead of a phone call or letter to update friends and family emails are sent and updates are posted to social networking sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and blogs. The shift from traditional one-way communications of print and video to the two-way communications via social media provide cattlemen new ways to connect with their customers. Building your farm brand: Advertisements, websites, farm signs, flyers and classified ads are a few of the many ways that cattlemen utilize to sell and promote their cattle, but perhaps one of the most effective ways they have to market their cattle are the real world face to face interactions they have with their customers, or other cattlemen. This is one of the many reasons why cattlemen that are promoting genetics from their farm put the effort into livestock shows and participate in industry organization events. Like many other aspects of our farms, technology is changing the ways which we can establish those connections with our customers. With the evolution of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook cattlemen can now have interactions with potential customers on a weekly, daily or even hourly basis without ever even leaving the farm. These updates not only serve as a reminder to your current customers but also allow new customers to learn more about the genetics your farm is promoting. It’s not just about marketing, the more one socially interacts with others the more successful their online presence is and marketing culture helps gain attention towards your offerings. Advocating for agriculture (Agvocating) -Information and ideas can spread like wildfire on social media sites allowing positive messages about beef to reach individuals

16 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | The Ring 2012

far removed from ones immediate network. It also allows false or negative information to spread very quickly and can result in detrimental results to the beef industry. This was very evident during recent events involving lean finely textured beef where activists dubbed it as “pink slime” and spread misinformation about how fat was removed and its safety that resulted in a nationwide boycott of the product forcing the BPI to shut down 80% of its business. Marketing to your customers: Many cattlemen agree that there’s a growing disconnect between them and their final customer, the American consumer. Simply updating others with posts and pictures from farms can spark curiosity from individuals that can lead to conversations and a better understanding of what happens on farms. Social network sites are allowing farmers and ranchers a new and unique way to reconnect with their customers to establish proactive relationships. Once relationships are built individuals can turn directly to the source about questions raised about the way their food is raised and get more reliable information, slowing the pace of the negative messages pushed by anti agriculture groups. Staying informed: News now breaks on social network sites. Social networking sites can allow individuals to stay up to date on timely information on topics like legislative updates, crop conditions, and livestock show results as they happen. Social networking has proven itself as a powerful way to market your brand, your industry as well as stay up to date. If you are on a social network site are you using it for its full potential, if not, why aren’t you?

BEST Program Continues Strong

By Katie Hack

When the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association founded the BEST program in 1999, there were three goals in mind. These goals include the education and leadership development of youth, recognition of the youth involved in the beef industry and establishment of a series of shows that have consistent and ethical regulations. Over the past 13 years, the BEST program has seen tremendous growth and serves as a model for other youth programs around the country. The BEST program has many hard-working committee members, volunteers and sponsoring partners to thank for its success. Not to go unrecognized are the exhibitors and families whose hard work and sacrifice make this program so rewarding. As with any flourishing program, the BEST program has undergone changes throughout the years for the betterment of the organization and will continue to do so in the future. BEST Committee Junior Representatives The BEST committee is made up of a devoted group of volunteers from across the state. Within this group are three youth exhibitors that have taken on the task of being the voice for their peers. The BEST junior representatives have the responsibility of attending meetings, planning shows, helping to organize the BEST leadership conference, along with attending other leadership building activities within the industry. Each junior representative serves a two-year term. The terms are staggered to ensure experience among the junior representatives. 46 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | The Ring 2012

The 2012-2013 BEST Committee Junior Representatives are Jessica Harsh, Sarah Johnson and Amber Shoemaker. Both Jessica and Sarah are in the second year of their term, while Amber is joining them in her first year as a junior representative. These three young ladies are delighted to start working toward this upcoming year and excited for all the opportunities it has in store. Jessica, from Delaware County, is the 17-year-old daughter of David and Michele Harsh. Jessica has participated in the BEST program for 10 years and has won numerous awards throughout her career in the program, including the 2012 BEST scholarship. A recent graduate from Buckeye Valley High School, Jessica will be attending Purdue University in the fall, majoring in animal sciences and agricultural communications. Along with numerous school activities, Jessica was elected Northeast Director for the American Junior Chianina Association in 2011. Sarah, from Pickaway County, is the 17-year-old daughter of Steve and Terry McKie-Johnson. Sarah had her first experience with the BEST program when she was just four years old, before the age requirements were changed. She began exhibiting again in 2002, this year receiving third overall in senior showmanship as well as Grand Champion AOB Heifer. She also enjoys taking part annually in the BEST program’s photography and essay contests. Amber, from Stark County, is the 19-year-old daughter of Keith and Dawn

Shoemaker. Amber had a very successful 20112012 season, winning both Champion Senior Showman and Reserve Champion Percentage Simmental Heifer. She is currently a student at The Ohio State University ATI majoring in animal sciences and agricultural communications.

2012-2013 BEST Junior Representatives pictured from left are Amber Shoemaker, Stark County; Jessica Harsh, Delaware County; and Sarah Johnson, Pickaway County.

Rule Changes for 2012-2013 The BEST committee members strive to better the program every year. With these efforts come changes and adjustments. The following are a list of rule changes and improvements that you can expect for the 2012-2013 season. Next year, there will be a separate Novice Showmanship division. BEST participants ages 11-16 only will have the opportunity to show in a separate Novice Showmanship division. All beginning showman ages 8-10 including Novice will show together in the Beginner Showmanship division. BEST points for Novice market animals and heifers will continue to be tracked as they have been. All Chianina cattle born after January 1, 2012 will have to meet the breed minimum of 6.25% to be eligible to show as a Chianina at BEST sanctioned shows. All heifers born before Jan. 1, 2012 will be grandfathered into the program per ACA Jr. Show eligibility rules.

New for 2012-2013, all heifers will be eligible to show as a Market Heifer and a Breeding Heifer. These heifers may also be dual nominated as both a Market Heifer and a Breeding Heifer and two sets of points tracked on the same animal for both divisions. In an effort to keep up with the times and be more user friendly, the BEST committee will permit electronic paper lookup at for animals nominated into the BEST program. Original documents for proof of registration are strongly encouraged for those who have the time permitting after the date of purchase before their first BEST show. The participant will still fill out their Intent to Participate form as usual and if the registration information is available when the form is filled out, simply fill out the designated area on the form and OCA staff will have your papers checked ahead of the BEST show season. At the show, your animal will still have their tattoo verified for the BEST show season. For purebred BEST

The Ring 2012 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | 47

heifers, a certificate will be handed to the participant to act in place of the original registration paper throughout the season so that they will only have to bring that certificate back to check in for their exhibitor numbers. Keep in mind that this is a BEST only perk and those cattle not entered in the BEST program will not be eligible for electronic look-up. At the first few BEST sanctioned shows BEST participants may also enter their animal in the BEST program and track points on the animal with a breed declaration. They will collect points on the animal and proof of registration MUST be received by the BEST coordinator at the BEST sanctioned show immediately following the declaration. Any animal that proof of registration is not provided for by the show immediately following will forfeit all of the points earned. The finalized rules will be on the website this summer for BEST participants to review.

48 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | The Ring 2012

Not a rule change, but something to look forward to in the coming season, there will be a mentoring program implemented into the BEST program for the 2012-2013 show season. This will include a more seasoned BEST participant helping newcomers to the program and helping them with questions that they have as well as encouraging the new BEST participant to take advantage of all of the opportunities that the program has to offer. If you’re interested in being a mentor for the Novice members next year, please let the OCA office know The BEST committee and BEST Shows are already planning and looking forward to another fantastic year. For any questions about the BEST program, please contact Stephanie Sindel, BEST Coordinator, at the OCA office or one of the BEST committee members.

ome say, “don’t mix family and busi-

ness,” but this family wouldn’t have it any other way. Being competitive in the seedstock cattle industry goes hand in hand with strong family ties and cooperation for Jones Show Cattle, Harrod, Ohio. Though Troy Jones and his father, Randy, take the lead role in the operation, Troy says his two brothers and family are very involved. “There’s a lot of times when they don’t have much time to help because of their excavating company,” Troy says. “But whenever I need help, they are both there.” The Joneses raise Maine-Anjou and Simmental with an Angus influence strong in the base of their 300 cows. Relying heavily on embryo transfer (ET) and A.I., JSC finds pride in the type of cattle they produce. “We’ve had a great experience with Maine-Anjous,” Troy says. “There’s kind of 68 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | The Ring 2012

a bad perception of Maine cows. They say they don’t feed and structure is a problem. Our Maines are deep-bodied, sound and big-footed. They’re cattle that would feed with any kind of cattle in the country.” Troy jokes that a growth in their herd was caused by his dad’s addiction to buying cattle. However, the numbers have supported a strong production sale in November for the past six years and a February bull sale for the past two. “The female sales have been great,” he says. “Last year was our highest averaging sale, right at $9,500. It’s been a good deal for us and we’ve met a lot of really good people.” Hosting a sale meant that JSC had to be more aggressive with increasing genetic quality, specifically using ET. “We work pretty hard every year at getting embryos in and just getting stuff going,” Troy says. “I swear without ET we’d have a bunch

While JSC strives for show ring success, seeing their customers do the same brings on a stronger sense of accomplishment. “We’ve done a lot of winning in the past,” Troy says. “A lot of it with The Jones family works together to raise Maine-Anjou and Simmental cattle in Harrod, Ohio. ones we’ve bought, but here over the last five or six years with families here in Ohio, they’ve been successful with what we’ve sold them.” Another customer, Jason Minneart of Illinois comes to mind. “He has a cow out of one of our old donor cows,” Troy says. “The heifer has brought in more than $300,000 in progeny and was Reserve Champion at the National Western Stock Show. The family contributes their success in part to youth programs like 4-H. “One of the biggest things is, and dad has always said it, without 4-H in our family who knows what we would have done,” Troy says. “It’s one of those deals that helps kids learn responsibility and get a good work ethic…keeps them out of trouble.”

Randy is excited to have his two 9 year old grandchildren in the show ring this year. Because of this, JSC started a small Hereford herd for the grandkids. “It’s fun to watch them show,” he says. “They are improving with each show and learning. That’s what it’s all about.” Troy says that the attempt to change child labor laws was alarming. “Trying to get kids off the farm is a terrible idea,” he says. “Kids wouldn’t get any of the responsibility they need and they don’t do it because they have to. They do it because they love it. All three of us boys will be back involved with 4-H because of our kids.”

Hidden Creek Farm finds success in a unique blend of breeds. Story and Photos by Julie White

ot every mom expects a gift that “moo’s” for Mother’s Day, but when Trish Fulmer set eyes on Little Miss, she thought it was the perfect present and was hooked. From that first Miniature Hereford heifer Trish received from her husband, Scott, four years ago to the 15 head of small-stature cattle they own today, their respect and passion have only grown for the Miniature Hereford and Lowline Angus breeds. “I like their personality,” Trish says as she’s describes the small herd residing near their home just west of Mansfield. “Their docility is a high factor for me. It’s easy for me to work with them by myself.” But their even temperament is just the tip of the iceberg. The Miniature Herefords, Lowline Angus and nearly 50 head of Angus cows make up the Fulmer’s “hobby farm,” 74 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | The Ring 2012

Hidden Creek Farm. Scott and Trish both own and work at Elite Excavating and oversee around 20 employees. “When we are not working full-time at our excavating business, we’re working with our cattle,” Scott says. “It really doesn’t leave a lot of time, but somehow we seem to squeeze everything in.” It was their daughter Kearstin that got them involved in the beef industry. Starting off with feeder calves for her 4-H project, they chose to use Limousin and eventually moved on to Angus, focusing on easy calving and strong carcass values. Scott grew up with a farming background on both sides of his family, though neither had cattle. However, it has turned into a family operation. Kearstin, now 19, doesn’t live at home anymore, but enjoys seeing the cattle when she visits. Their son Jerod, 14, helps with chores and other daily tasks.

Two characteristics stand out and have been utilized by Hidden Creek Farm — easy fleshing ability and low birth weight. “I’ve been told ‘twigs and sticks, Trish, feed them twigs and sticks they are too fat,’” Trish says. “They are so easy fleshing that these Scott and Trish Fulmer raise Miniature Hereford, Lowline Angus and Angus breeds keep good condition cattle in north central Ohio. Scott and Trish agree that Miniature Herefords and Lowlines have a lot of potential to meet niche markets. “The main market for these cattle are the people who have small acreage, are older or younger, or don’t have a big facility set up for regular size cattle,” Scott says. “They are easier to handle and not as intimidating for small kids or older people.” These breeds also have the opportunity to meet the demand for freezer beef. “You can purchase a side of beef and still have it fit in your freezer,” he says. “You can get all the cuts of beef you would like without going out and purchasing an additional freezer.” Looking forward the Fulmer’s have some plans. “Lowline genetics are a good start for grass-fed beef,” Scott says. They are hoping down the road to market grassfed beef. “We have 122 acres at our other farm,” he explains. “We are implementing a rotational grazing system by dividing it up into 11 pastures. Once we get that in place we plan to move forward to a grass-fed only situation.” Trish says she would like to see their herd increase in quality. “We’ve got DeJaMoo and one of our other top females, CRF Willa, at Trans Ova Genetics in our effort to raise higher quality cattle,” she says. “We want to thin out the herd and get rid of ones that are ‘just 76 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | The Ring 2012

The purpose was to determine whether large or small animals were more efficient converters of grass into meat. Destined for slaughter upon termination of the project, a small herd was purchased by seven men in 1992. Following the sale the men met under a gum tree and established the Australian Lowline Cattle Association, adopting the name “Lowline.”

cows.’” Scott pays much attention to Angus genetics specifically selecting animals that have strong carcass traits and good EPDs. He plans to put his knowledge to use in selecting their next generation of Miniature Herefords and Lowlines and continue to use embryo transfer and A.I. to do so. The numbers and participation in Miniature Hereford and Lowline events are growing. Trish is currently serving on the North American Miniature Hereford Association Board of Directors. She also helps to organize the Miniature Hereford Show at the Ohio Beef Expo which was in its second year in 2012. The Lowlines had their inaugural show at Expo this year. Trish expects their popularity to continue to increase. “They are an up and coming animal,” Trish says. “I think you’ll see more guys using them.”

What would the beef industry do without cattle shows? By John Grimes, OSU Extension Beef Coordinator

he title of the article you are about to

read may seem a bit peculiar to find in a publication devoted to interests associated with showing beef cattle. However, the role of cattle shows within the beef industry has evolved over the years and is certainly different from times when I exhibited 4-H and FFA projects. One can wonder about the importance of cattle shows or if they will even be around in the future. Let’s consider the positive and negative aspects of today’s beef cattle shows. Beef cattle shows historically have served the primary purpose of evaluating, influencing and setting the direction of cattle type through visual evaluation. Over the past century, most of the significant changes in the type of cattle produced in the United States have had their earliest roots in the show ring. Pick any given point in history where a major change in 98 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | The Ring 2012

cattle body type occurred and there usually was a prominent university professor or judging team coach or respected breeder leading the call for change. These knowledgeable leaders were the industry’s best option at the time to determine the need for change. The benefit of hindsight allows us to determine which of these changes truly benefitted the beef industry and which changes proved detrimental. Evaluation of beef cattle has become much more sophisticated with the passing of time. We now have several tools available to help evaluate in addition to phenotypic evaluation in the show ring. In the early 1980’s, breed associations began to publish Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) as a tool to evaluate the genetic merit of different traits of cattle. Later, ultrasound was utilized to evaluate carcass traits in cattle without requiring harvest

Feature of the animal. Recently, DNA testing of animals has allowed breeders to increase our confidence in an animal’s genetic merit by increasing the accuracy of the EPDs. DNA testing has also allowed us to identify genetic defects and attempt to minimize their harmful effects. These technological advancements have certainly impacted the importance of the overall evaluation of beef cattle today. Phenotypic evaluation will always have a place in determining the quality of traits such as feet and legs, soundness of movement, udder quality, etc. But one has to wonder about the future of cattle shows and their importance within the beef industry. Do we really need cattle shows to see continued advancement of the beef industry in this country? The answer depends on your perspective. Could I still produce cattle today if there were no cattle shows held? Absolutely! Some would argue that the show ring today has become such an artificial environment in which to evaluate cattle that it has little merit within the industry. Judges and breeders alike can lose sight of the practical traits of animals and how they relate to everyday production. It is simply human nature to take things to the extreme and the show ring bears this fact out. Look at the extreme changes in type and kind that we have seen over the years. Did cattle need to be as tall as they were in the late 1980’s? Look at the changes we have seen in grooming practices. I understand that “hair styles” change but do we really need to have air conditioned rooms that allow an animal to have a winter hair coat in the heat of mid-summer?

While I can question the legitimacy of priorities and practicalities associated with beef cattle shows today, I believe it remains a very important asset for the industry today and in the future. There are many important benefits associated with beef cattle shows, some of which have been recognized for many years while others are others have recently gained importance. As stated earlier, cattle shows give us the opportunity to compare the phenotype of animals from our herd against animals from other operations from around the country. I believe the show ring in its purest form can improve the quality of any herd because it makes the owner/breeder critically evaluate their animals in areas where technology can’t assist us. Several breeders would not otherwise be involved in the cattle business if the show ring was not available as a means to evaluate their herd’s production in a competitive environment. Think of some of the businesses that supply products and services to the show ring industry and you will see economic impact. As with any youth project, a participant should gain a working knowledge of the beef industry through the development and management of their project animal. There are things that I do today as a cattle producer that were learned as a result of carrying beef projects as a youth. Clubs and their advisors

The Ring 2012 | Ohio Cattlemen’s Association | 99

Feature continue do an outstanding job of providing educational opportunities for their members. Breeders who sell youth their project animals are a valuable source of information to youth members. My experiences as a 4-H and FFA member certainly played a large role in my becoming a cattle breeder today. There is no denying that there has always been an important human element associated with the beef show ring experience. The daily care of an animal that is associated with a properly managed livestock project will teach a certain degree of individual responsibility. This definitely has application to any career path that may be chosen as an adult. Showmanship is an extremely underrated aspect of the beef show ring experience. A good showman develops a unique bond with an animal and understands animal care and behavior at its highest level. In my opinion, this has been one of the greatest benefits of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association’s BEST program. The level of beef showmanship has significantly improved in the state of Ohio as a result of the extra shows available for participation through this program. Participation in beef cattle shows at the local, state, and national level gives us the opportunity to interact with the non-farm public. While this opportunity has always

been there, it is more important than ever. Less than one percent of this country’s population is involved in production agriculture, and the disconnect between farmers and the public is greater than ever. As representatives of the beef industry, youth and adults alike need to take the time while attending shows to educate the public as to how we manage our animals in order to produce a safe food product. I realize that not every youth member taking beef projects will be involved in the beef industry as an adult but they can be a future asset to the industry through their knowledge gained as a result of project involvement. My family has exhibited beef cattle at all levels of competition for more than 40 years and it has played an important role in our cattle operation. We have had many positive experiences and a few negative ones along the way associated with beef cattle shows but I wouldn’t trade a bit of it away. I believe that showing beef cattle has better prepared my children for whatever career path they choose as adults and has made me a better breeder of cattle. For the show ring to have a continued place of importance in the beef industry, we can’t lose sight of the practical production and human element aspects that can greatly benefit our industry in the years to come.

The Ohio State University Livestock Judging Team Scenario: Rank these Shorthorn heifers as they should be selected for a purebred operation in southern Ohio. The operation’s main source of income is from their open heifer sale in the fall where other purebred producers and junior showmen purchase elite heifer prospects with show ring and donor potential. This operation exhibits cattle at the state fair as well as several national shows to increase their exposure. Bull calves will be sold private treaty to other seedstock producers. All other calves will be sold at weaning through the local sale barn. Feed and labor are abundant. All heifers will be bred to a calving ease sire.

There’s a pair of females that combine balance and eye appeal with some added mass and power to find in the top pair. I started with 4. The February heifer excels the class in terms of base-width and center-body dimension. Not surprisingly, she’s the high performing heifer on paper. In addition, she’s the nicest balanced heifer that’s laid in the smoothest about her shoulder and she’s really feminine and extended up through her front one-third. In terms of generating seedstock with some added look, but still keeping them stout and basic in their

build, I’m the most confident in 4’s brood cow potential. Now I’ll admit, the top pair is close and if 4 gets beat, it’s by 3. She’s an expressively muscled heifer that does stand down on a larger circumference of foot and bone. But not surprisingly, the heaviest muscled heifer in the class is rounder hipped and coarser fronted. She’s more opened up at the point of her shoulder and toes out up front. When directly compared to 4, she gives up some balance and structural correctness so I left her a close second.

Still, of the remaining trio, 3 is by some margin the boldest sprung and most powerfully constructed heifer so I easily use her over 2 in my intermediate decision. 3 simply spreads more shape and dimension throughout her quarter, while still being more correct in her rear leg set. Genetically, I’d expect her to generate the stouter, faster growing progeny. Sure, 2 is a long-sided heifer that stays leveler from hooks to pins and she does toe ahead truer up front. Nevertheless, the blaze-faced heifer simply lacks the spring of rib and muscle shape to rival my top pair. When viewed from behind, the heifer th e k t with extra set to e e c

her hock flattens through her lower quarter and narrows up at the ground. Now in a bottom pair of females that just aren’t as good on paper, I still prefer the depth of body and easy fleshing brood cow look found in 2 over 1. In a pair of lower quality females she’s the logical replacement choice. I do appreciate the spotted heifer for being stouter hipped and heavier boned. Even so, the high birth weight heifer is the tightest and harshest about her center body. Plus she’s entirely too straight out of her hock. I question her functionality as she’s simply the furthest removed from breeding fundamentals, so she’s fourth. Thank you. ansci.osu.edu/livestock-judging-team/
