Welcome to Oh Crop! Magazine’s June Special! I honestly never thought it would get this far... To think seven months ago I was thinking about starting Oh Crop! and now look where we are! We have had over 3500 views since then and it’s been incredible to see the work that people had for us; for that I’m both truly honoured and grateful for your help. I recently decided to continue the magazine on, for at least another six months (I hope!). But for that Oh Crop! Magazine needs photographers and writers. Please get in touch as without photographers and writers we won’t be able to continue the magazine! Tell your friends, promote Oh Crop! and continue to read the magazine on a monthly basis. Help Oh Crop! to be bigger, better and more successful than it currently is so that we can continue to give you an amazing service.

Abdullah BinHussain Cameras have always been an attraction for me since childhood. I’ve used several digital cameras and never used to get the result I wanted. I was inspired by a camera magazine which had various photographs clicked by professionals. Later my view of photography changed only when I bought my first DSLR Canon 450D. I took photographs the way I have never taken before with digital cameras. I got to try and learn new aspects of photography. The magic about photography is that each time we try, we learn a new thing. The colours and depth of the photography from those photographs in magazines inspired me to click more photos and participate in several competitions. I was always motivated and supported by my friends and family who appreciated my photography. Page | 5

Amanda Bunce Hi, I’m Amanda Bunce, 2nd year TV and Broadcasting student. I was first interested in photography at the age of 11 when my dad bought his first digital camera. Everything about digital photography fascinated me. Seeing the picture that had just been taken instantly on the small screen amazed me. When I bought my own compact camera, I soon realised there was a lot more to discover in the photography world! Now, 9 years on I own the Canon 500D and absolutely love it! My hobby has grown in so many aspects, learning valuable new skills and techniques along the way. I am inspired by everything around me, a new location, a group of friends, a trip to the beach, music, other artists, the environment, just about anything. I have an eye for colour and shapes, and I enjoy carrying out photography projects and focusing on specific subjects. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ amanda-bunce

Hello! I’m Chi and I’m the founder of Oh Crop! Magazine. I have always been interested in photography since I was a young boy and especially loved landscape photos. However I didn’t get into photography until 2009 when I bought my Canon 450D. Since then I have bought a Canon 50mm f/1.8, a Sigma 70-300mm, a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and now own a Canon 7D (Clearly I can’t look after my money!).

I like to take photos of gigs and sports but I’m always happy to try everything so that I can improve my photography! I don’t think I’ll ever go into serious photography as it’s too competitive and expensive for me. I hope that one day I can fulfil my lifelong dream; to go to every single continent including Antarctica! http://www.flickr.com/ photos/chibear89

Danielle Starr Hi I’m Danielle Starr, I’m 20 years old and I take photos! I have always been interested in photography but never knew where to start and only started taking photos recently. I’m currently shooting with a Sony Alpha 450 (chosen primarily because of its auto-HDR and 7fps in sports mode) however I have never used the auto-HDR! I’m particularly interested in rust and decay... and padlocks. I’m not entirely sure where the obsession with rust came from, but it’s evident if you go through my photos - I have come to love the different textures which are apparent between rust and stone where they often appear together. I also have a fondness for boats and marine scenery. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ daniellestarr Page | 13

Elisabeth Spielbichler For as long as I can remember I have always been taking pictures of anything and everything. When I was twelve I got my first Canon SLR and photography lessons where I got taught the basics. I recently got my own DSLR and have been working on my photographic

skills. I love taking people pictures and since I spent 10 years in Asia, I have quite a collection of people living their everyday lives. However, since my DSLR I have developed an increasing enjoyment for landscape photography, more Page | 14

specifically seascapes. Aside from these two main areas, I have also spent time taking photos of sunsets and historical buildings.

Page | 15

Within photography, I attempt to keep things simple as much as possible. Most of my attempts are made with the same camera/ lens, which I carry with me almost all of the time.  Predominantly I am a Black & White film photographer; although I do own both Digital and Film, I rarely find myself straying into either Digital Page | 16

or Colour. I find B&W gives an odd separatism from reality that really helps convey the correct message through photographs.  I like to not take photography too seriously if at all possible, using it as both to amuse myself with self-expression, and to document my life as I live it.  Hopefully without following too

Hi I’m Irina. I study Architecture, second year, and I had my first film camera when I was 12 and first digital camera when I was 16 but I truly started photography when I got my DSLR in January this year. I have a Canon 550D with an 18-55mm lens and this camera completely changed my approach and my perception about photography. Particularly, night photography was something I have never done before and so I was very keen to experiment

with my camera in low light. But my favourite subjects remain nature and architecture; I approach them in an abstract way and I like to emphasise symmetries, regularity and rhythm. I never process my pictures but this is something I would like to learn. In general I still have so much to learn about photography and as I progress I enjoy it more and more. I find it fun and challenging at the same time. http://www.flickr.com/ photos/irinaghiuzan

Jade Tuplin Hello! My name is Jade, I am 19 years old and I am studying at College in sunny Cornwall! It was pretty much a year ago, this May that I got into photography, I bought myself a Canon 1000D and my journey into photography began. I am pleased to say that, a year later, I finally upgraded to my beautiful Canon 60D! I was inspired to buy my camera after viewing some photos taken by a German exchange student at my

College. Looking at his beautiful photos I thought to myself; ‘I want to be taking photos just like that! So from then on I was inspired! I love people photography, also taking candid shots. I think these are so beautiful and can really capture what that person is like naturally without the false pretence of a forced expression. Recently I photographed my first wedding and I thoroughly enjoyed that, I hope to go on and photograph some more Page | 22

weddings this summer! Through photography so many good things seemed to have happened to me. I’ve made friends from all over the world and had opportunities given to me that I never would’ve had before. I love cameras, photography and taking photos, it makes me happy and it’s now my life! http://www.flickr.com/ photos/jadetuplin

Hi my name is Kathryn Younger I am 16 years old and from Hertfordshire. I have been doing photography for almost two years now and mostly shoot with my 500D.    I am primarily a self-taught photographer and my interest began at the end of 2009; since this time my interest has grown greatly and I like to try and photograph a wide range of things.  I have done some practical things at school including: year books, sports day, a funeral, theatrical productions, dance shows, prom and party events whilst out of school I have shot a parkour group. I have also done a few modelling portfolios and the models have had the opportunity in getting on to the next stages of that field.

KRISTA PALMU “Someday you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. C.S. Lewis This is what kind of happened to me. One day I woke up and realized that I could live in a sweet, joyful world where I would be surrounded soft, pastel, and dreamy fantasies. I suppose I had always had a thing for everything that was extremely magical and whimsical. In a sense, I still get to be that little girl who believes in fairy tales. Having said this, my photographic style is a blend of wishes and imagination. Coupled with a strong belief that wonderlands truly exist, I aim at daily creating and building my own non-sense world where joy blooms. Indeed, one day I was old enough to start reading living fairy tales again. May your days be filled with joy. http://www.joyhey.com Page | 31

Hi! I’m Marina, 25 and from Austria. I remember always being fascinated by photography, although I didn’t pursue it properly until a couple of years ago. My creative background is in drawing and painting, as well as architectural design. In a way, that is how I approach photography – trying to see shapes, patterns, symmetry and dynamics, staying close to the original meaning of photography (greek; photo: light, graphé: drawing – drawing with light). I love the play of light on surfaces, how it is reflected and accentuates some things while casting others in shadow. I’m

Marina Hauer Page | 32

also very much into architectural photography, minimalism, and (candid) portraiture (although I’m not good at that, because I’m too chicken to just walk up to people and stick a camera in their face). Over the last year or two, I’ve started to explore black and white photography, because it can be so expressive if done correctly. In general, my inspiration comes from looking at the world – not critical, or judgemental, but seeing what’s there, and capturing it, trying to show it in its best light. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ marinahauer/

Hey, I’m Nikki Shaw, a second year architect studying at Portsmouth University. I got involved in photography a few years ago when I joined my local camera club, but it’s only since I started uni and joined the photo society, that I have really become serious about photography. Most of my photos are taken when I’m out and about; whether it’s

just wandering round my village, walking along the beach or travelling around Europe – I like to capture magical moments in time. I currently use a little Nikon D40x and S550, and I have just dug out my dad’s Olympus OM2N SLR so I am beginning to experiment with film. http://www.flickr.com/ photos/shawn_the_ sheep

Paul Harr is I have been what you could call a ‘serious photographer’ for around 18 months. Prior to the purchase of my SLR I had messed around with a digital compact (and film cameras before then).  My primary interest is in gig photography; personally I find there is nothing like it. As everyone who has shot gigs will know, the true joy lies in going through the pictures the day after and finding gems such as those I have featured here. I use (and will always use) a Canon. They’re simply the best (couldn’t resist!). http://www.flickr.com/photos/ paulfrankharris

I got started in photography just over a year ago, mainly because I'd seen so many amazing photos on the internet and I wanted to try and create some myself. So I bought a Sony a330 and started experimenting. I'm exploring a lot of different types of photography at the moment, particularly land/cityscapes. I love how photos can express a moment/ place in so many different ways; how there are so many different styles and methods someone can take a photograph. http://www.flickr.com/ photos/50058629@N04

Russell Ede I'm Russell, a photographer and full-time(ish) History undergraduate student, I'm also currently the President of the Reading University Photographic Society for the second year running; though I'm a little older than most students, having worked for the railways for several years prior to university (as well as undertaking a part-time Civil Engineering degree, yeah, there was a heel-face-turn somewhere along the line). I do mostly sports photography these days, something I particularly enjoy doing as it connects two of my passions as a fan and as a photographer. I'm also starting to do wedding photography and I also regularly cover events, and in my portfolio I can rather proudly list working for Reading Council to photograph the 2010 General Election Counts for Reading East/West. Given that I'm a sports photographer and do some paid work, it's probably not surprising that I predominantly shoot with Canon's lovely EOS 7D coupled up with their EF 70-200mm f4 L IS USM Lens and/or the EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM Lens. However, I also own several other lenses, including Canon's EF-S 15-85mm, EF-S 60mm Macro as well as Sigma's 50mm f1.4 Lens. I also utilise an EOS 40D as a second body and occasionally rent lenses for specific purposes, which is a really cheap way of getting high-quality lenses for specific tasks! http://www.flickr.com/photos/russellede

Serena Wong

Hello, I am Serena Wong from Singapore (Chairperson of University of Manchester Photography Society, AY2010/2012). I was partially influenced by my mother about photography since young and always wanted my own camera. I only started shooting (serious photography, not toy cameras) since year 2005 when I bought my first DSLR (Canon EOS350D), and am still using it now. I started off shooting more portraits and exploded into many more areas since. In year 2006, I was given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, when I was selected to represent my Polytechnic as one of the youth photographer for Singapore 2006 (IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings). This opportunity allowed me to take a huge leap in my photography walk as I got the chance to expose myself to a major event and working with various well-known photographers in Singapore. Taking a step back from digital photography, Lomography (especially instant photography) is my current area of focus. http://www.wix.com/together_serena/serenaphotography
