From Boycott to Victory

towards a solution to this potentially international issue, Starbucks turned to themselves and created a program for diversity training that includes closing their stores for one day and hiring the highest-priced diversity trainers money can buy. The Black community wanted to know, “How will we, the Black community--aggrieved by this incident and aggrieved every day--how will we be better because of your “diversity training”? The only answer Starbucks could give was, after the training “You will be better because we will be better.” Sorry! Not good enough! Numerous studies by Harvard University, MIT, Tel Aviv University and others show that diversity training doesn’t work and can produce the opposite of intended outcomes. These studies conclude that decades of cultural, racial and environmental bias and prejudice cannot be eradicated with one or 50 or 100 “diversity trainings.” In fact, such “trainings” can cause those hard-wired feelings to become more deeply entrenched thus resulting in the opposite of the sought-after effect.

The Chicago Boycott – Case Study

If Howard Shultz wasn’t the founder of Starbucks, he would have been one of the boycott protesters with us. He said he was “embarrassed” and “ashamed” by the arrest of two Black men in a Starbucks Store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who were taken away by police and subsequently held for 9 hours in a Philadelphia jail for the crime of sitting in a Starbucks store and not ordering coffee. Starbucks is widely known as a good operator and an overall good guy in American business circles with its clean stores, open meeting spaces, free Wi-Fi; strong community relations, and its great business model consisting of good jobs with fair benefits. But the Starbucks decision to fix this public relations problem with “diversity training” is not the Howard Schultz or even the Starbucks way. Rather than work with the Black community

In Chicago, The Black Star Project organized a 12-store boycott of Starbucks. During the boycott, no anger was displayed. No one was arrested. No windows were broken. No stores were firebombed. Instead, there was plenty of dialogue. Dialogue is the Starbucks way. There were reports of Starbucks’ employees offering the boycotters free coffee and standing with the protesters. Protesters held doors open for elderly customers who did not honor the boycott. One protester even offered to buy a Starbucks coffee for the sick father of a man who expressed guilt about violating the boycott, but explained that his dad could only drink one kind of coffee—only available at Starbucks. It seemed as though boycotters and boycottees had reached a human accord -- The Starbucks Way. The Chicago boycott organizers are now planning community forums at more than 300 Black-owned or managed coffee houses, as well as at faith-based and community-based organizations across the U.S., especially near the 12 Starbucks stores previously boycotted. These community forums will serve as “Black Economic Empowerment Forums”, where attendees will develop plans to improve the economic vitality of their communities. We wanted Starbucks to be part of this initiative. So far, they have said no. Starbucks is really one of the “good guys” in corporate America but working with the community will only make them better. It’s important to understand that even with over 9,000 stores throughout America, Starbucks shops are really only guests in these communities.

Video Shows Black Airbnb Guests & Police Joking

By AMANDA LEE MYERS and JANIE HAR Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) - New video shows officers joking with three black people considering suing over what they say was an excessive response to a racially motivated 911 call in Southern California. The body camera footage released by the Rialto Police Department Tuesday shows a laid-back and at times light-hearted interaction between officers and the group they had pulled over, which included the granddaughter of reggae legend Bob Marley. The group had been checking out of their Airbnb rental with their luggage when a neighbor called police on April 30 reporting a possible burglary. Filmmaker Kells Fyffe-Marshall wrote on Facebook that they were “surrounded’’ by seven police cars and told to put their hands in the air. She nor her lawyer responded to requests for comment Tuesday. Rialto police Chief Mark Kling says the department has been unfairly accused of racism.

Multiple Shootings Leave 5 Wounded in San Diego SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Officials say multiple shootings in downtown San Diego have left five people injured. San Diego police say in a statement early Tuesday that two black men shot and wounded three men and a woman on a street corner at about 11 p.m. Monday. A fifth person was shot and wounded nearby, Police say all five of the victims were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials have not identified the shooting victims. The suspects have been described as being 19 to 25 years old and about 6-feet tall. They were wearing dark clothing and last seen running from the scene of the shootings. No additional information about the incident has been released.

Partnership Powers Up Career By Genoa Barrow California Black Media Buie, a mental health worker, was tired of toiling away at low-end, minimum wage jobs and was going through a “rough patch” after losing her home in Alameda to a fire. “One of the first questions they asked me during the interview (for both Cypress Mandela and PowerPathway™) was, ‘Why do you think you belong in this program?’ I told them, ‘If this training program is serious about changing lives, put me in it and watch a life be changed’ and that’s exactly what it’s done for me,” said the 2016 graduate. Shimia Buie’s path to full-time employment with PG&E has been as curved as Tate’s, having initially failed a test for entry-level work, but later passing it with the help of fellow PowerPathway™ students and staffers, landing a paid internship with the company and then being hired as a utility worker on its electric side. Today, she works at a facility that provides electricity to parts of San Francisco and Daly City. From 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. she’s digging ditches and running underground cables. It is physical work, but Buie is reaping the rewards. “I’ve come a long way from that hotel room,” she said. “I was able to establish credit. I was able to basically live comfortably without wondering where our next meal was coming from and how the bills were going to get paid. My son is now 20 years old; I was able to put money away for him to be in college and invest in my future,” Buie continued. She plans to reach electrician status and then promote to supervisor. Buie calls PowerPathway™ “one of the best programs in Oakland right now.”

According to PG&E spokesperson Tony Khing, nearly 95 percent Cypress Mandela’s 148 graduates have been hired by PG&E and other utilities and companies such as East Bay Municipal Utility District, AT&T, Comcast, BART and CalTrans. The PowerPathway Program boasts an overall diversity rate of 88 percent. PG&E Senior Program Manager, Justin Real, says it is having a real impact on improving the job outlook for minorities in Oakland. “Typically our students go on to make an average salary of about $92,000 a year. These are some of the last middle class jobs, for someone to come in, they don’t need a college degree or education, and are still able to make upwards of $100,000 a year. Most importantly, they are able to work in their local community. When you think about it in terms, it is much bigger than PG&E, the commerce that is able to spread and, frankly put, in the Oakland program for instance, Oakland gets a huge benefit in having one of their own residents making a salary much above minimum wage and being able to invest back in the community.” “From PG&E’s side, we have always been a very diverse company, but we are really able to make sure that our students that now become PG&E employees are reflective of their community. They are the best ambassadors that our company can ever have, they know what the work is like in their local communities,” Real said. PowerPathway™ debuted in 2008 and came to Oakland in 2012. A full-fledged housing crisis has gripped California, marked by a severe lack of affordable homes and apartments for seniors and middle-class families – as a result of property values climbing to pre-recession levels.  The median cost of a home in California is now a staggering $500,000, twice the national median cost. “Living in decent, affordable, and reasonably located housing is one of the most important determinants of well–being for every Californian. More than just basic shelter, housing affects our lives in other important ways, determining our access to work, education, recreation, shopping, and quality health care.” said Horton.   “If we don’t fix this, seniors and poor to middle income families will be forced to leave California.” As the Making Home Affordable Program, (HARP), signed into law by President Obama, is set to expire on December 31,

2018, now is the time for this type of legislation. HARP helped homeowners refinance their mortgage with an average rate reduction of 2.1 percentage points, saving an average of more than $4,100 in interest during their first 12 months, or about $345 every month. Additionally, homeowners who refinance from 30 year fixed mortgages to 15 year fixed mortgages can save up to $145,000. For more information, scan over. California has the third-lowest home ownership rate and the fourth highest rent in the country.  The decline in home purchases is generally related to higher rents as it becomes a challenge to save enough for a down payment.  There is a direct relationship between high rents and high home prices.  Additionally, studies find that housing costs are a burden on one’s finances when they surpass 30% of income.  According to a Public Policy Institute of California study, nearly one in three California renter households spends at least half of their income on rent.  While incomes have remained stagnant, rents in California continue to soar, resulting in many low- and middle-income workers cutting essential spending, which also hurts the State’s overall economy. Even with rent control in cities like Santa Monica and Los Angeles, as of March 2018, the average rent for an apartment in Los Angeles is $2554, which is a 0.16% decrease from last year when the average rent was $2558, and a 1.64% increase from last month when the average rent was $2512. “The cost of renting an apartment or home in California is as high as it’s ever been.  In fact, many millennials are moving from California because the dream of affordable housing seems so unlikely.  It’s necessary we do something to lower the cost of renting one’s residence in this state,” Horton said. The average rent in California has increased 60% over the past 20 years.  The flat “renter’s credit” amount has not been adjusted since it was enacted in 1972. Assembly Member Santiago testified at the Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation:  “With the rising cost of rental housing in California, the expansion of the renter’s credit can increase access to housing for low-income families.”  The legislation passed out of the committee with a 9-0 bipartisan vote.  The bill now moves to the Assembly Standing Committee on Appropriations. This bill will increase the nonrefundable renter’s credit to the greater of $60 allowed under current law or 10 percent of the median rent in the county where the property is occupied for individuals and $120 under current law, or 20 percent of the median rent in the county where the property is occupied for joint filers, heads of households, and surviving spouses. cate for criminal justice reform, voting rights, equal access to fair wages, employment, and quality housing and education. But, who cares about my titles? Everyone who pays their fee should be allowed to play golf, if they desire, without interruption, without false accusations, without intimidation, and without the threat of police, especially when they have committed no crime or disruption. I kept wondering whether the police were professional, because they knew me and what would have occurred had they not known me. While we waited, I texted the other three ladies who had left. I let them know that the police were called, and they became so upset they wanted to return for fear of what could happen. With the long history of how police interact with African Americans, businesses know, or should know, that when they call the police they are inviting them to arrest the person, which could also lead to injury or death. This situation was not as bad as the recent arrest of two Black men at a Starbucks in Philadelphia, because we were not arrested nor was it as bad as the incident involving a 25-year-old Black woman at a Waffle House in Saraland, Ala., because police did not assault us. However, it is similar to them in that businesses are using the police as their personal complaint department and as enforcers without repercussion or accountability. Police must turn away once they learn that the matter is not criminal, but

civil. Law enforcement policies and practices must change. Police must enforce laws against these businesses and their owners who file false complaints. Legislators must act to hold businesses accountable. Patrons and the community must stand up in the midst of these situations, instead of being passive observers or actively trying to concoct legitimate reasons for the mistreatment of Black patrons, when they are nonexistent. See something, say something. I commend the men who publicly spoke out for us. I am thankful for the public outcry of support. We, as African Americans, just want to live. Some wanted a place to meet, others wanted utensils for their meal, others wanted to exercise, and we simply wanted to golf. We demand the freedom to frequent businesses, to use services, to ask questions, and, yes, to even complain without the fear of being arrested, beaten or shot. The irrational fears of some White people should not be our problem and should not interfere with our quality of life. We will not stand idle or remain silent while our freedoms and lives are devalued and threatened. Despite the attempted movement to take us back to a time of second-class citizenry, we will not return. We will maintain the shout, “Forward Ever, Backward Never!” for ourselves and our brethren of other races, colors, nationalities, religion and of other protected classes. Only together will we make positive change.

This summer in Georgia, Virginia, New York and in Washington, D.C., six NNPA journalism scholars selected from Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) located across the nation will have the opportunity to work in Black-owned newspapers. These outstanding NNPA DTU Fellows will also journey together to highlight and file news reports about real life stories that are occurring in our communities. In the current national media climate where allegations of “fake news” are routinely propagated, we will welcome receipt of the news and inspirations from the writings, videos and social media postings of our young, aspiring journalists. We are also grateful to the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) for assisting Chevrolet and the NNPA to notify and reach HBCU students attending 120 HBCUs across the nation about the DTU fellowship opportunities. Blacks Can’t Afford to Ignore Dental Health By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Newswire Columnist While Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provide a safety net, access to dental care is a big issue, especially for children of color. According to the Pew Charitable Trusts, “tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children in the United States, five times as prevalent as asthma, and dental care is one of the nation’s greatest unmet children’s health needs.” Why? Sometimes children’s parents simply did not arrange for them to see a dentist. Sometimes, dental services were not available in particular areas, for example, dental needs are sometimes more likely to be addressed in emergency rooms than dental clinics. And, a 2016 report from the Department of Health and Human Services said that dental provider shortages were at least part of the reason some children, especially low-income Black and Hispanic children, lack dental care. Children pay a big price when their dental needs are unmet. In the worst and most extreme cases, as in that of Maryland’s Deamonte Driver, children can die, because they do not have access to basic dental services. “Childhood dental decay can lead to pain, difficulty eating, speaking and sleeping, and more serious infections, some of which can be life-threatening,” said Dr. Diane Earle, the managing dental director for Kool Smiles. To address some of the need, Kool Smiles is offering free dental care to children in need on Sunday, May 20. Forty-nine offices in 13 states plus Washington, D.C. will be open to provide dental exams, extractions, fillings, sealants, and other emergency services. The free day is open to children who either lack insurance or are underinsured.

To be sure, Kool Smiles can’t possibly provide a smile for every child, but they are taking a step in the right direction. This year represents the fourth year that the organization has offered the free service. It’s first-come, first-serve; so if you are interested, check out mykoolsmiles.com/sharing smiles, where you can register for a free appointment. In the past three years more than 1,400 children have received free dental care, with more than 500 being treated last year. Kool Smiles hopes to serve even more children this year. Access to safe and affordable health care has been part of my portfolio for some years. In 2015, I had the privilege of spending a week at Meharry Medical College, lecturing on health policy. The challenges that people of color face around health care can be distilled to the 3 A’s: Access, Assets, and Attitudes. All too often access is limited, because people live in the wrong areas, because providers are unavailable, or because there are other reasons people can’t physically get to the care they need. Assets determine almost everything—if you don’t have the dollars, no matter what the proximity, you won’t likely have the care you need. Finally, the attitudes of both providers and patients make a difference in who seeks care and in what kind of care is provided. Recent work on maternal mortality among African American women, regardless of race, suggests that racial attitudes in treatment make a difference. Consider the case of our superstar, Serena Williams, who almost died giving birth to her precious Alexis Olympia, partly, because of some preconceived notions about Black folks on the part of misguided medical professionals. Mental health and dental health are the two parts of healthcare that are most frequently ignored. It is not enough to simply

get an annual checkup. Increasing research shows that mental health and physical health are inextricably intertwined. Dental health, all too frequently, is ignored. Even those with “good” health insurance may have limited dental insurance. And lower-income folks rely on Medicaid and CHIP, but may not have anywhere to go to get the help they need. Dental practitioners like Dr. Diane Earle, a second-generation Meharry-trained dentist, stand in the gap for those who may not have access to healthcare. In her role as Managing Dental Director for Kool Smiles, Earle said that, “Sharing Smiles Day is an opportunity for our dentists and staff to put a smile back on the faces of children who need dental care but whose families cannot afford it.” Pew says that more than 18 million low-income children had no access to health care in 2014. Kool Smile’s effort to see 500 or more children on May 20 doesn’t begin to deal with the enormity of the challenge, but it’s an effort that will make a big difference for the children who are treated. And it’s an opportunity for us to reflect on the importance of dental health that the role that organizations like Kool Smiles can play in closing the dental health gap. Full disclosure: I’ve worked with Kool Smiles and their dental service organization, Benevis, on a program called Watch Yo’ Mouth, featuring Dr. Diane Earle and healthy living author Debra Peek-Haynes. We plan to offer more of these programs in coming months. Meanwhile, though, I am excited about Sharing Smiles Day and about developing ways more low-income children can have access to dental care, so that there can be a healthy smile for every child in our nation.

Early exposure to non-traditional learning environments not only creates a generation of new dreamers and thought leaders, but also provides them with an eye-opening and novel perspective on the limitless opportunities that is their future. From elementary to middle school, efforts to prepare students for college and beyond are taking hold earlier than ever as a childhood surrounded by books, scholastic support and diverse role models leave permanent impressions on a young person’s mind well into their late teens. By Lynette Monroe Program Assistant, NNPA ESSA Public Awareness Campaign Salome Thomas-EL, a charter school principal and award-winning national education expert, captivated an audience of over 500 educators with his keynote address on overcoming barriers to success at the 2018 National Title I Conference in Philadelphia, Penn. Title I schools are characterized by the additional funds they receive to meet the needs of their most vulnerable students. “Title I funding provisions are designed to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantaged and to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education. The National Title I Conference engaged educators at all levels around the relationship between cultural competence and best academic practices. Principal EL leads Thomas Edison Charter School, a tuition-free, public charter school in Wilmington, Del. According to the school’s website, more than 95 percent of students that attend Thomas Edison live at, or below the poverty level. Principal EL shared the story of the Thomas Edison Charter School chess team that competed and won the United States Chess Federation (USCF) National Elementary Chess Championship in Dallas, Texas on Sunday, May 11, 2014. Edison was the only school from Delaware competing in the National Tournament, but persevered to bring home Delaware’s first National Scholastic Chess Championship, the school’s website said. “Thomas Edison is the home of one of the most-fierce, all-female chess teams in the nation,” the school’s website said. “They have won the Mid-Atlantic All-Girls Chess Championship three of the past four years.” Principal EL left the crowd with four C’s (Crazy, Curious, Consistent and Culture of Love) that he has used to overcome barriers to success in the classroom: Crazy—Every child deserves to have at least one person be crazy about them. Curious—It is not enough for educators to care about their students; they must be curious about their lives outside of school, as well. Consistent—Often times vulnerable youth grow accustomed to inconsistencies from adults in their lives. Principle EL challenges educators to stay consistent, despite the challenges that may occur. Culture of Love—Sometimes the children who need love the most, ask in the most unloving ways. Principal EL also challenges educators to create a culture of love for all students. Similar stories of triumph were shared from educators from all over the country, highlighting why diversity and representation in teaching is so important. Dr. Tommy A. Watson, the former principal of Palmer Lake Elementary School in Brookland Park Minn., grew up in Denver, Colo. As a child, both of his parents were addicted to heroin and were professional shoplifters. He also spent a lot of time in foster care and was homeless as a senior in high school. Today, Dr. Watson travels the country sharing his story with at-risk youth, leaving behind a message of hope. “When I went off to college, my mother was in prison, my father was in prison and my older brother was in prison. My older sister was back in Denver on drugs…I really saw education as my only way out,” Dr. Watson explained, as he detailed his motivation to share the power of education in his life. Dr. Robert Kirton, the CEO for DNA Educational Solutions and Support also talked about his personal experiences as an adolescent and how he uses those experiences to shape the education policies that he advocates for. “My thing is going from risk to resiliency. I started off pretty sluggish. I got in trouble all the time while in school. I got a young lady pregnant, while in high school,” Dr. Kirton said. “She left me with the baby; she didn’t see him again until we both graduated from college. He graduated with his bachelor’s and I graduated with my doctorate.” According to Dr. Kirton’s biography, the educator has a documented success that includes a cumulative graduation rate above 95 percent. Dr. Kirton’s personal story of risk to resiliency supports his educational approach. His straight-forward, disciplined strategy focuses on ensuring students feel safe and understand the connection between their actions and consequences. His method to “suspend students to school” is a refreshing approach in an educational system that disproportionately suspends and expels Black children. When asked about the importance of parental engagement, Dr. Kirton answered, “I engage parents as partners…[you have to] bring them into the fold and make them apart of the team.” Dr. Kirton continued: “When parent participation is not an option, I find a parent-like figure to fulfill that crucial part.” Learn more about the Every Student Succeeds Act and the importance of diversity and inclusion in teaching at nnpa.org/ essa.

ence, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) fields are especially important. Reflected in its legacy history, American industry was built on innovation. In order to awaken dreams and inspire the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers and leaders, it’s imperative to expose children to STEAM at an early age. If engaged, receptive and they’ve developed an interest by eighth grade, they’re three times more likely to pursue careers in STEAM fields later in life. STEAM careers are at the forefront of some of the fastest-growing industries. Conversely, they also have some of the largest gender gaps as women comprise only 26 percent of all science, tech, engineering and mathematics jobs. As they continue to grow, women are getting left behind. Many young girls are turning away from STEAM careers during their developmental years and have completely opted out by high school. That must change and we, the village (with torches in hand), must step up to lead, advocate and champion that change. For over three decades, the Ford Motor Company has been committed to supporting innovative initiatives that encourage and inspire young people to pursue and succeed in STEAM fields—a career path many, if not most, of today’s youth (especially African American youth) believe are out of reach for them. Both within and outside the village, this is an important conversation that we must have as the future of our children is at stake. In addition to sponsorships, scholarships and aligning with synergy partners such as the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), Ford has demonstrated its commitment in a hands-on way, connecting with and supporting a host of STEM and STEAM focused initiatives including Girls Who Code, Tech Sassy Girlz, STEMinista project, Destination Imagination, School Retool, Michigan Technological University, Amphi Middle School’s Girl Power in Science & Engineering, FIRST® Robotics and #WomenInSTEAM, among others. Here in the U.S. and around the world, women are severely underrepresented in STEAM fields—career fields that are expected to grow more than 9 million jobs by 2022. No surprise, both women and men are needed to fill those jobs and we, individually and collectively, must do our part to begin to narrow the gap, especially among African American youth. For African American communities, integrating young women in science and technology begins with planting the seed at an early age, nurturing that seed to show the impossible is possible and, cultivating girls to become a part of those fields. Ever shifting, the formative and impressionable years between teen and young adult are a principal cause for why young girls are looking away from STEAM. Ford remains committed to inspiring young people to seek knowledge, be curious, solve problems and—like Henry Ford himself—make their dreams of a better world come true. Whether parent, educator, leader, STEAM alum, or just someone who cares about the village and its children, you can play a role in supporting an up-and-coming generation of young girls interested and desirous to pursue a career in STEAM. Let’s unite as one to stimulate, inspire and change a life. At the end of the day, we’re all stakeholders in the future and success of our children.

Shohei Ohtani Continues to Impress

By Cameron Buford Contributing Sports Writer Whatsgoodinsports.com Weeks ago, we asked if Shohei Ohtani was changing minds in baseball; though he may not have changed many minds yet, he is certainly turning heads. The Angeles dynamic Japanese pitcher who also boast unique hitting ability has been very impressive early in the season. So impressive he’s challenging history with start. As the season progress, the multi-talented, Ohtani continue to impress baseball fans across the country. Shohei has been impressive both on the mound and at the plate. On Mother’s Day, this past Sunday, we saw another example of his pitching dominance. Ohtani threw 6 inning he threw 103 pitches for 11 strikeouts with 1 run on 3 hits. One shy of his personal best, this was the second time, in 6 starts that he threw 11 or more strikeouts in a game. No Angel, other than Ohtani has ever amassed 43 strikeouts in their first six games, he is also 3-1 with 2 no decisions on the season. This fascinating Japanese two-way player is doing things the world of baseball hasn’t seen since the likes of Babe Ruth. So far this season, Shohei at the plate is hitting .348, .652 Slugging %, 5 homeruns, 16 RBIs and a 1.044 OPS. All the while having a 3-1 record on the mound with a 3.58 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP 43 Strikeouts in 32 innings pitched. The 6ft 4in Iwate, Japan native Shohei Ohtani is proving to be worth the time and attention he garnered from Major League Baseball this past off season, because of his hitting ability matched with his raw pitching talents. Leading the team in quality starts, ranking 3rd in strikeouts and 4th in innings picked is evidence of the promise his talents brings Angeles fans. Though his play and potential may not have convinced more GM’s to utilize two-way players, the Angeles should be credited for being open to the idea. The has seemingly paid off to this point. They are drawing in fans specifically to see Shohei and what he can do, and he is taking some of the spot light off other stars on the team allowing them to focus on their individual games. Morton was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972. She served four terms, representing Bridgeport. She later won a Democratic primary against an incumbent senator and then went on to win the general election after a lengthy court battle with Bridgeport Democrats. She served six terms in the Senate, eventually becoming deputy president pro tempore in 1990. She retired in 1992 and died in 2012. Four current black women legislators nominated Morton to the hall of fame, citing her “quiet determination” to fight prejudice and racism. California Mayors Seek $1.5 Billion to Help Homeless

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ Mayors from California’s eleven largest cities on Wednesday asked state lawmakers to provide $1.5 billion to help with what they say is a growing homeless crisis. They are backing legislation that would require the cities to provide matching funds, creating a $3 billion pot of money to be spent on affordable housing, temporary shelters, supportive services and outreach. They said in an earlier letter to legislative leaders that lawmakers should use a quarter of the state’s $6.1 billion budget surplus to help the homeless. San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer called it “the most pressing issue facing California cities today.’’ The mayors cited a 2017 federal estimate that the most populous state now has more than 134,000 homeless people. Their request came the same day that two Democratic state senators announced they will seek $2 billion for affordable housing, also in response to the mayors’ requests. The bipartisan group includes mayors from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Long Beach, Sacramento, Oakland, Bakersfield, Anaheim and Santa Ana. The proposals come less than six months after Gov. Jerry Brown signed 15 housing bills into law. They imposed a new $75 real estate transaction fee and placed a $4 billion housing bond on the November ballot.

Texas Woman Defecates in Pants to Hide Drugs CORSICANA, Texas (AP) _ Police say a Texas woman attempted to hide evidence during an arrest by defecating in her pants and using the feces to conceal drugs. Officers in Corsicana, about 55 miles (88 kilometers ) south of Dallas, were investigating a report of a theft at a grocery store on Wednesday when they attempted to subdue a female suspect and take her into custody. Police say they placed Shannen Martin in the back of a police cruiser where they say she intentionally defecated in her pants then hid a crack pipe, 2.3 grams of crack cocaine and a Valentine’s Day card in her excrement. Officers had to sift through the woman’s feces to retrieve the evidence after Martin was booked on charges of tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance.

Philadelphia 76ers vs. Miami Heat As expected. the youth of the 76ers dominated the youth of the Miami Heat and won this series 4-1. Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Indiana Pacers To the surprise of many, Victor Oladipo was able to lead to Pacer to 3 wins in this series. Though the superiority of LeBron James led the Cavaliers to game 7 series win. Western Conference Predictions; Houston Rockets vs. Minnesota Timberwolves The young Timberwolves were able to catch the Rockets sleeping one game, though they were never in danger of this losing this series and won 4-1. Golden State Warriors vs. San Antonio Spurs The Veteran Spurs were able to muster up enough gumption to beat the Champs in one game, before being sent fishing. Warriors won 4-1 Portland Trailblazers vs. New Orleans Pelicans I was completed wrong in this series as I had Trailblazers winning this series. Not only did they not win, the Trailblazers were swept out the playoffs by Pelicans, behind the phenomenal play of MVP Candidate Anthony Davis. Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Utah Jazz In this series we’ve seen the emergence of a superstar and the downfall of another. Rookie of the Year Candidate Donovan Mitchell led the Utah Jazz to a convincing 4-2 series win over the Thunder, while 2 of the 3 so called “superstars” for the Thunder were non-factors in this series. Coaching and unity were key factors in this series win for the Jazz.

Second Round Eastern Conference Toronto Raptors vs. Cleveland Cavaliers I didn’t have much confidence in the Raptors going into this series and just as expected the Raptors weren’t ready for the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers won the series 4-0. Philadelphia 76ers vs Boston Celtics Though we enjoyed seeing some of the best young talent in the NBA compete in this series, the Boston Celtics defeated the Bucks to stay alive in the playoffs. The excellent coaching, toughness and youthful exuberance of the Celtics lead them yet another playoff series win. Second Round Western Conference Utah Jazz vs the Houston Rockets The greatness off Mitchell was able to get one win for the Jazz, though the experience of the Rockets helped them as they won this series 4-1. New Orleans Pelicans vs Golden State Warriors Just as easily the Pelicans won their earlier series, is just as convincingly the defending champions defeated them in this series 4-1 Eastern Conference Finals Boston Celtics vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Though the Celtics have yet to let injuries derail their season, having two All Stars can’t and won’t be good for the Celtics. Brad Stevens has proven to be underrated and overlooked but can he come up with a scheme to corral the best player in the league? I expect the Cavaliers to win the series 4-3. Golden State Warriors vs Houston Rockets This is the matchup all NBA fans have been clamoring for all season. Can the Rockets deeper bench and mid-range game beat a team that has 2 League MVP’s? Even though the Rockets come into this matchup outmanned I expect them to keep this series competitive before losing 4-2 to the Warriors. The NBA Finals Barring injuries, I am confident in my previous prediction of another Cavaliers/ Warriors Finals matchup for the 2018 NBA Finals. The defending champions will successfully defend their title against a game Cavaliers team. I have the Warriors winning their third title in four years in going away fashion 4-2. The excitement of these playoffs and the future of the NBA is at an all-time high. The development of the young talent coupled with some of the great coaches in this league keeps this league enjoying worldwide growth. “Black Panther” Salutes Grads By Lauren Poteat NNPA Newswire Contributor After celebrating the success of back-to-back, global box office hits, Marvel’s “Black Panther” actor Chadwick Boseman, returned to his alma mater, Howard University, to deliver the school’s 2018 commencement convocation address. In March, Marvel’s “Black Panther” became the highest-grossing superhero movie of all-time in the United States (not adjusted for inflation), when it surpassed the $623 million mark set by “The Avengers” in 2012, according to Variety.com. Then, Boseman reprised his “Black Panther” role for “Avengers: Infinity War,” which is currently the fifth highest grossing movie of alltime. Championing his own personal experiences during his time studying at the prestigious, historically Black university, Boseman urged proud degree recipients, to press forward, to hold up their heads and to never fear rejection. “I can think of no better place to be right now, after the ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Avengers’ campaigns, then to return and participate in these graduation ceremonies with you,” Boseman told the graduates. “It is a great privilege, graduates, to address you on your day, a day that will be one of the most important accomplishments of your life to date.” Howard University President Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick recalled “how Boseman and his classmates advocated and participated in a three-day protest against the university to dismiss an initiative to transition the College of Fine Arts into the Department of Fine Arts. The protest was unsuccessful in stopping the transition,” a press release about the president’s speech said. With Boseman by his side, Dr. Frederick, “announced a campaign to re-establish the College of Fine Arts and launch an Endowed College of Fine Arts Award,” the press release said. Dr. Frederick encouraged the graduates to “take risks” and “learn how to be wrong.” “It is the best way to learn and grow,” Dr. Frederick said. “Build a culture of generous listening so that others may be emboldened to take risks, too.” According to school officials, during the 2018 commencement convocation, Howard University awarded 2,217 degrees, including 343 master’s degrees, and 90 Ph.Ds. Boseman called Howard University “a magical place” as he

recalled the day that he met Muhammad Ali, as he walked across “The Yard.” “I remember walking across this yard on what seemed to be a random day, my head down, lost in my own world of issues like many of you do, daily. And I raise my head…Muhammad Ali is walking towards me,” Boseman said. “Time seemed to slow down, as his eyes locked on mine. He then raised his fist into a quintessential guard and I was game to play along with him, to act as if I was a worthy opponent. What an honor to be challenged by ‘The Greatest of All-Time.’” Boseman continued: “I walked away floating like a butterfly. I walked away, at that moment, amused at life, amused that no one would be able to believe that story, but me. That is the magic of this place [Howard University]. “Almost anything can happen here,” Boseman said before giving the crowd the official Howard salute (“H-U! U-Know!”). Boseman also praised the students for their drive and perserverance in organizing the longest sit-in protest at Howard University’s administration building in the school’s history. Allegations of mismanagement in the school’s financial aid office sparked the protest, which lasted nearly two weeks in April. “Everyday that you fou ght for, was not for yourself, but for those that come after you,” Boseman said. Overcome with gratitude and excitement, Howard graduate Kyla Maupin, who received her degree in French, expressed her sentiments about Boseman’s speech. “Hearing Chadwick speak was really inspiring,” Maupin said. “I really appreciated hearing about his struggles in the beginning of his career; that was really inspiring for me. Maupin added that she was proud to see a fellow Bison deliver the commencement address. Closing out the high-energy ceremony, Boseman offered one last nugget of wisdom, urging graduates to find their purpose. “Purpose is the essential element of you,” Boseman said. “It is the reason you are on the planet at this particular time in history. Your very existence is wrapped up in the things you are here to fulfill.” Boseman continued: “Whatever you choose for a career path, remember the struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose.”

Cosby Jurors Shopped Book Deal By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor Before they convicted Bill Cosby on three counts of aggravated indecent assault last month, some of the jurors were already plotting on how they could cash in on the case. People familiar with three of the jurors on the case said they had a book deal on their minds, long before evidence was presented in the courtroom. “The 80-year-old comedian faces up to 10 years in prison on each count, but Cosby is likely to serve them concurrently,” CNN.com reported. “A sentencing hearing with Judge Steven O’Neill has not yet been scheduled, and Cosby remains out on bail.” Juror No. 11 and juror No. 12, two White males, “specifically talked about how much they could make after they send that old man to prison,” said a Norristown resident, who goes by the nickname, “Deacon Stone.” Stone declined to provide his given name, because he said he feared for his safety, but he was visibly present throughout the trial. According to Stone, another juror was told, “Dude, do the right thing, get that book deal,” by a close family member. Asked how he came across the information, Stone and another man, who didn’t want to give his name, said they are “closer than cousins” to one of the jurors. During the trial, juror No. 12 appeared to talk to Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele’s spokeswoman Kate Delano in a flirtatious manner. At least three individuals regularly complained of the juror raising his eyebrows and winking at Delano, who may have not been aware of the juror’s actions. Juror No.12 was also observed smiling “almost uncontrollable” at attorney Lisa Bloom, who’s client Janice Dickerson testified against Cosby. “If jurors in the Cosby trial were motivated by the possibility of getting a book deal, then they would have had incentive to find him guilty, guilty, guilty—just like they did,” said famed forensic psychiatrist and expert witness, Carole Lieberman. “Finding him ‘guilty’ made it a landmark victory of sorts, because of the #MeToo [movement] and because it brought down a once-powerful celebrity. If they had found him ‘not guilty,’ there wouldn’t be much of a story there, so people wouldn’t be as interested in reading about it in a book.” Eleven of the 12 jurors have already joined to hire a publicist. Juror No. 1, who was observed sleeping throughout the trial, appeared alone on ABC’s Good Morning America after the verdict and said Cosby’s 2006 deposition hurt the comedian.

However, former Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor made a deal with Cosby in which Castor agreed that if the comedian sat for the deposition, his words could never be used against him in any current or future criminal prosecution. Castor blasted O’Neill in an email last month. “A judge with an enormous potential bias did not disclose that possible bias to the lawyers to give them the option to seek a new judge,” Castor said. In explaining why he made the deal with Cosby, Castor said: “I thought making Mr. Cosby pay money was the best I was going to be able to set the stage for. I was hopeful that I had made Andrea Constand a millionaire.” Constand did reach an out-of-court civil settlement with Cosby worth $3.4 million. Castor reiterated that he granted Cosby immunity from prosecution and that future prosecutors were bound to honor that deal. Castor also blasted Steele. “A sitting prosecutor spent $1 million proving Cosby is guilty in campaign ads, before charges were ever brought,” Castor said. “That’s in direct contravention of written ethics rules which says prosecutors cannot do that. What is happening to Cosby, as bad a man as he undoubtedly is, should never happen to anyone in America.  I’m 36 years in the justice system, much of it at a pretty high level and I’m disgusted that any citizen entitled to the presumption of innocence has been treated this way.” Castor continued: “I didn’t say anything, because it is up to the judge and the lawyers to police their own conduct. I kept waiting for someone to ask me, but it never happened.” Matt Pinsker, a former prosecutor and magistrate who is now a criminal defense attorney and adjunct professor of criminal justice at Virginia Commonwealth University, said he was appalled when he heard about the jurors in the Cosby case. “It’s completely inappropriate for jurors to be planning a book deal, and it could result in a mistrial,” Pinsker said. “Jurors should be focused on doing justice, and not profiting from their public service. A prospective book deal is legally and morally problematic because it gives jurors a profit incentive.” Kimberly Bathgate, a spokeswoman for the Montgomery County Court, said the judge and district attorney would have no comment. Cosby’s spokesman Andrew Wyatt could not immediately be reached for comment. In April, Cosby, 80, was found guilty on three counts of aggravated sexual assault stemming from a 2003 or 2004 incident involving Andrea Constand at his Elkins Park home.

He’s scheduled to be sentenced later this summer and faces up to 30 years in prison. Ryan Babcock, a trial lawyer who owns a firm in Brunswick, Ga., said juror misconduct can be a serious problem at trial, particularly with technological advances made in the last decade. “The parties are entitled to jurors who don’t have their minds made up about a verdict before the trial starts, and jurors who are not influenced by third parties outside of the courtroom trial,” Babcock said. “That can be especially challenging in a high-profile case like Bill Cosby’s. The comment about [the book deal] alone would not amount to juror misconduct. In any event, juror misconduct could result in a new trial or reversal on appeal, but should not impact the sentence itself.”

INVEST NOW AND REAP DIVIDENDS

By Ronneisha Davis-Lewis In South Los Angeles, healthy food options are scarce and fast food is far more accessible than fresh fruits and vegetables. As a child care provider at South Los Angeles’ Moore’s Daycare Preparatory School, Inc., I have an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of the children who are in my care. It’s important for me that they have an environment complete with healthy foods, opportunity for physical activity, and limited time in front of a screen. Parents, who often times work long hours, trust me to provide the healthiest environment available for their children. And they are not alone. In Los Angeles County, 50% of children 0-5 spend at least part of their day in child care. They will carry some of the habits they develop in child care throughout life. It is critical to invest in our children’s health via introducing and reinforcing healthy lifestyle choices when they are young. This will reverse some of the poor health trends current youth and adults are experiencing, such as higher obesity rates, increased incidence of diabetes and dental disease. And meal time is a great opportunity to start. Many childcare providers like to use meals and snacks to incorporate healthy eating habits, as well as introduce kids to new foods, learn new words, and discover how to share with others. By introducing kids to healthier options, they learn to eat nutritious meals and snacks at a young age, which provides a platform for healthier eating as they mature. Food can be a source to strengthen a community’s health and wellness. By providing and introducing healthier food options, I know it will increase the likelihood these kids will become healthier adults. Yet, there is more to building a healthier lifestyle than healthier food. We also need to provide opportunities and space for kids to be more active. This investment will allow early childcare providers to purchase items such as tricycles and safe climbing equipment for age appropriate physical activities. We would also invest in resources that allow parents to know how much time their children spend engaged in these healthy habits. For example, a checklist board that shows how many vegetables the children ate that day, how much time they spent playing outside, and how much time they spent watching TV. This is a tool that would allow the children to help track their engagement, while allowing the parents to see the improvements this investment helped create. Our community has an opportunity to invest in our children’s future, which in the end is an investment back into our community. Supporting an increase in funding for family child care homes would allow me and other providers to better incorporate nutrition standards and provide even healthier food options to the young children we look after. These resources would also allow those in low-income communities the opportunity to implement and provide even healthier standards and more access to fresher, healthy food. In an effort increasing awareness to a situation that is far to often “swept under the rug, “ Veronica Loving and LaDarrion William teamed up to  develop  a Stage Play which was based off a true story that was chronicled in the book  authored by  Veronica and  co-authored by  her daughter Jazzmine Jackson published in 2012. The Stage Play  Feeding A Monster  was Directed by Art Evans  best known from the movie ‘Die Hard 2’  is theatrical interpretation of the book, with the same title. Though altered slightly, the passion of the plays writers experience was encapsulated exceptionally well by the carefully selected cast. This story of betrayal, pain, and anguish threatened to rip this family apart, which could be easily understood. Yet, the strength and courage of Veronica and Jazzmine to bring their experience with the horror of domestic violence and sexual abuse to print and onto the stage is commendable  and selfless. This mother-daughter duo agreed that this story should be shared and discussed amongst families rather than being hidden and kept in the dark. Veronica’s 21 year marriage is the backdrop of the play. She has been the bread winner and support system

for her daughter and the man who has raised her daughter Jazzmine as his own. Her husband, a former minor league baseball player, consistently seeking the next fruitful partnership, to the detriment of his expenses and supposed partnerships. In the play Jazzmine, was in a personal crossroads trying to decide between school and perusing her passion for music.  Rhea,  Veronica’s sister and Jazzmine’s aunt, and Eli, Jazzmine’s friend from college, act intermediaries through this saga, were additional characters that were added to bring an even more relatable experience to the audience.  Even though the play switched venues since their initial showing, none of the intensity of the actors and actress was lost in the process. We all should be grateful that Veronica and Jazzmine have been willing to share thier painfully honest truth, for the benefit of families all across America. Because there is a right and wrong way to address this haneous crime I felt the Stage Play captured the imaginations of the audience with their real raw truth. The cast of “Feeding A Monster”included actors Conisha Wade Dorsey (playing Rhea), Fayley Patrice (playing

Veronica), Doyin Domingo (playing Jazzmine), DeJuan Christopher (playing Kenneth), and Andre Jefferson (playing Eli). This dynamic cast delivers an impactful performance that really evokes the feelings of anger, disgust, self-discovery and rage from the audience. Howard Schultz, Founder and Executive Chairman of the Starbucks Board of Directors does understand Starbucks culture \and he understands America. He knows that the Starbucks success is tied to communities’ success. He is unafraid to try new ideas even though those ideas might fail. However, this seems not to be the Starbucks way today. In 2015, Starbucks tried to convene a ‘Race Together” dialogue through its stores. America was not ready then. In 2018, America is coming apart racially, socially and religiously. America is now ready for Howard Schultz’ ideas. But this effort cannot be owned by Starbucks alone. Other corporations, government agencies at all levels, foundations, faith-based and civic organizations along with social institutions and others must partner with Starbucks to make America and the world better. Mr. Schultz’ leadership style has been described as transformational. He does not think like a businessperson. He thinks like a person wanting to make the world a better place. But even he, super-rich, powerful, and well-intentioned, needs the help of the world to achieve this transformational vision and reality. Starbucks, well established in business history, now has a chance to establish itself in human history. In the words of Mr. Schultz: “…if we think about the country today — and I’m not talking about politics — I think the country needs to become more compassionate, more empathic. And we can’t speak about the promise of America and the American Dream and leave millions of people behind. And it’s my view that — leave Washington aside and all the politics aside — businesses and business leaders need to do a lot more for the people we employ, the communities we serve, and we can make a significant difference.”

Schultz says that he knows the Starbucks chain “won’t bridge the racial divide on its own” and that a coffee company “can only do so much.” However, he hopes to keep pushing forward and pursue initiatives that matter to him with the “same vigor he pursues corporate profits.” The Montgomery Bus Boycott that changed America forever lasted 381 days.
