June 2009 Dear Parents, We begin the final half-term of this academic year with a packed agenda. There are a number of activities planned for the children which we hope you will support and take the opportunity to come into school. Yours sincerely, Jenny Davies (Headteacher) ***MUSIC EVENING*** Thank you to all pupils and parents who took part in the Music Evening. It was, again, a great success and enjoyed by all. The evening showed how much fun music can be especially if the whole family are involved. Thanks also to Mr Brown Evans, and Mrs Hollinshead-Bland who obviously train our musicians well. Finally, well done to staff too, who received enormous applause for their efforts. ***PARENT ASSEMBLIES*** Parent assemblies begin again this week. I hope you will all take this opportunity to come in and spend time with your child sharing their work in an informal way. DATE TH

***SPORTS DAY*** th
It is sports day on Monday 8 June. The Infant Sports will be in the morning beginning at 9.30 a.m. and the Junior Sports will take place during the afternoon beginning at 1.15 p.m. There will be a mixture of activities to suit all abilities including a competitive element and traditional races. The team spirit will be encouraged by each individual winning points for their school team – owls, eagles, kites (red) and kestrels. We ask that children wear a t-shirt reflecting their team colour. Eagles – blue, Kites-red, Owls – green and Kestrels – yellow. Can I please ask that parents do not encourage their child to leave their group? We need to know where children are at all times. ***SPONSORED BOUNCE*** As part of Sports Week we are finding a number of ways to encourage children to keep active. The local charity – Caudwell Childrens Trust is providing the school with the equipment to carry out a fun activity on space-hoppers on Tuesday 9th June. To take part all you need to do is return the signed envelope sent out before half-term. N.B. no child can take part without this signature. Sponsorship is of course voluntary. Any money raised from the event will be shared equally between the school and the charity. ***HELP YOUR CHILD WITH WRITING*** Data shows that nationally primary children do not find high achievement in writing easy. We at Offley have been working really hard to find ways to encourage children to write and to support their development in this area. Like any concept to be learnt progress is greatest when the skills are practiced regularly. Many parents have asked how they can help, especially with homework and we have had a number of very positive responses to the changes we have made to the writing tasks given for homework. To find out what we as a school are introducing to support learning and how you can be involved in your child’s progress Mr Walker (Deputy Headteacher and Literacy Co-ordinator) will lead a meeting for parents of pupils from Reception to Year 6 on Wednesday 10th June starting at 7.00 p.m. We hope you will come and join the staff in this informative and fun evening. ***PRE-SCHOOL VISITS*** We are welcoming 46 children to the Reception classes in September 2009. The induction process has now started with the children being invited to a Teddy Bears’ Picnic last term and the pre-school afternoons start this month. We are sure they will enjoy their time with us at Offley ! We are also really looking forward to Rainbow Pre-School (Formally Wesley Avenue) being based at Offley from September. Again, preparations are already taking place with final alterations to the room taking place at the end of term. This is going to benefit children in preschool and Reception as the staff work together as a team providing the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. ***SCIENCE WEEK*** nd
During week beginning 22 June the school will have a focus on Science. A number of parents and outside agencies have offered their support in developing our children’s enquiry skills. We hope you will take the opportunity to come and see what is happening either on our Open Day 23rd June or maybe after school.
***OPEN DAY*** We will be holding an Open Day for all family and friends of pupils at Offley on Tuesday 23rd June 2009. Why don’t you come along and see the school in action? Spend a little time with your child and visit the different classes. School will be Open from 11-12 noon and 1.30 – 3.00 p.m. .***FRIENDS OF OFFLEY PRIMARY*** The FOPS are busy preparing for the Summer Fair and Barbecue which will take place on Friday 10th June starting at 6.00 p.m. Last year’s event was a great success and I hope you will enjoy the evening they have planned for you this year. To support the event we will be holding a non-uniform day on Friday 3rd July. We ask that you send in a bottle with your child – this could be wine, squash, shampoo, anything that comes in a bottle!!! We are very grateful for all the support Parents give to our fund raising events and we hope that you will enjoy the evening too! ***DATES FOR DIARY*** 8th June
