write this President’s letter in Beijing, China. It is morning here and from my window in the China Conservatory’s guestroom I can see the rooftops of the conservatory building. Further away, the contours of the mountains stand out clearly in the morning sunshine. This might become rather a hot day, a little above 30 degrees centigrade. Most of the other days spent here this August have been different: mainly foggy or cloudy with occasional showers of rain and a few days with temperatures below 30 degrees. The evenings have been really pleasant with a soft breeze. If

it is repeated next year this is what we can expect during the World Conference, which will be held in Beijing during the first week of August 2010. The National Conference on Music Education, organised by the CSME (China Society for Music Education) and hosted by the China Conservatory, has just ended. The conference attracted more than 300 participants, mainly music educators and students from institutions in China that will host Commission Seminars next July. In many respects this conference has been a preparation and rehearsal for next year’s World Conference. It has, for example, provided information about ISME, the organisation of the World Conference and Commission Seminars, submissions and the reviewing process. There were also special sessions for World Conference volunteers, who will be needed in large numbers. The Chairs of the seven Commissions and the Forum were invited to this conference and have been able to meet with representatives of their respective host institutions. All of them had the opportunity to visit their Seminar venue, whether in Beijing or in other locations in China. This is, to my knowledge, the first time that all Commission Chairs have been able to meet their hosts one year in advance, and it has been one of the rare opportunities for the Chairs to meet with each other. We have also used the time to discuss other ISME matters, not least the visibility of the Commissions during the upcoming World Conference. Planning for the World

Conference is moving into a more intensive phase as we work through proposals for performing groups and, after 1st October, the submissions for presentations. We will soon have a good indication of the expected number of international delegates. k k k k It is customary that the ISME Board meetings are held at the site of the World Conference, one year ahead, so that they can be informed of the Conference plans and visit the venues. This meeting took place in Beijing at the beginning of August. During the meeting there was a report from the Chinese Conference Organising Group (COG) and a visit to the conference venues: the China National Convention Centre and the China Conservatory. There were also discussions on strategic issues. These will continue over the coming months with the aim of developing a strategic plan. A report from the Membership Focus Group brought the types and principles of ISME membership to the Board’s attention. Detailed actions arising from this will be relayed to the membership in due course. The Board discussed the importance of attracting Board members who reflect the geographic and cultural breadth of ISME as a world organisation. The Board approved ISME support of Board members from countries classified by the United Nations as Low HDI (Human Development Index), with ISME covering the cost of all travel and lodging costs for Board meetings. Board members from medium

nn

HDI countries may receive partial support depending on their application and individual situation. One-year Individual ISME Membership for members from low HDI countries was lowered from US$20 to US$5. These are important changes that we hope will both generate more participation in ISME and facilitate nomina-tions of Board members from a representative range of countries. It is very important that ISME members nominate candidates for the upcoming elections, the deadline for which is 15th December. Please read the nomination information carefully and consider nominating candidates for the Board. HĂĽkan LundstrĂśm President (2008-2010)

The call for nominations is included in this newsletter on page 12 and the form as a separate insert.

DURING THE FIRST WEEK of August 2009 the ISME Board met in Beijing for its annual meetings. During the last week of August, due to the generosity of the Chinese Society for Music Education (CSME), the Chairs of the Commissions and Forum were invited to Beijing to take part in the National Conference of Chinese Music Educators. BOARD IMPRESSIONS Victor Fung: ‘Beijing is one of the most exciting cities in the world. Evidence of some of the longest history of the human race is side-by-side with the latest contemporary innovations. A wide range of cuisine choices is available. The city offers the most authentic Chinese experience in a safe and secure environment. Tips: Once landed in China, most expenses are relatively cheap, but cash in Chinese Yuan (RMB) is necessary for food and transport.’ Marvelene Moore: ‘Beijing is an exciting city, filled with many cultural and historical places to visit. The architecture is impressive, the city is clean and the people are very friendly and accommodating. The conference venue, located in the former Olympic Village, is spectacular and more than adequate for the needs. There are restaurants throughout the city, including Western fast food ones, so visitors can taste local cuisine as well as foods from other cultures. The upcoming ISME World Conference, has all the signs of being a ‘must attend’ conference not only because of the quality sessions that we anticipate, but also because of the conference venue, the people and the city of Beijing.’ Phil Mullen: ‘I am very much looking forward to the ISME World Conference in Beijing. I believe it will be a historic occasion with real sharing of information between Chinese music educators and their colleagues around the world. Following my recent visit to Beijing I am excited by the quality of the organization thus far and the emphasis on both practical learning and very high quality speakers. I look forward to meeting you there.’ Regina Murphy: ‘I found the Chinese people to be very friendly and welcoming with a good sense of humour. Getting about by taxi was easy and inexpensive. While I did not meet a lot of fluent English speakers, it is amazing how far a few simple greetings in Mandarin will take you and it’s fun trying to speak in tune. I’m practising “ni hao” (hello) and “xie xie” (thank-you)! It’s easy for Eurozone members to convert to yuan – and good value for money. No shortage of ATM machines makes cash withdrawal easy. Bargaining in the silk markets was enormous fun – can’t wait for next time!’
