CREWS AND TANGOS CUTEYS
BY MICHAEL AIN December past in a flurry of ice-covered streets and massive power-outtages, while Toronto Odyssey’rs kept warm and toasted with winter happenings from holiday concerts to New Years Eve Balldrops. Toronto’s LGBTQ Community Chorus, Singing OUT, kicked off the month with a Lights of December concert on Dec. 7th, at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. While a week later, Toronto’s Men Chorus (Forte) moved us through an incredible classical journey of the 12 days of Christmas at the Metropolitan United Church. However, the true stars of December aligned during a wide spectrum of New Year’s countdowns at venues across the city. Culture Addiction by Mode Events at 1134 Dupont St. featured appearances by Montreal’s DJ Mike “Kidd” Savoie, and DJ AVS (Alfredo Scaini: Toronto), with a music set by The Kerouacs ringing in the New Year. Over at FLY Nightclub, Charles Pavia hosted an incredible countdown with Deko-Ze spinning ‘til 6am, continuing the party throughout New Year’s Day over at The Comfort Zone. At Crews and Tangos, a troupe of drag royales assembled including Jada Hudson, Ivory Towers, Carlotta Carlisle and Tyler Uptight. Meanwhile I woke Jan 1st with recollections of late-night tequila, Chinatown karaoke in Chinatown, and 6am late-night noodles at Pho Pasteur (525 Dundas St. W). And suddenly ... Holy crap! ... It’s 2014! No sooner then Jan.4th were venues packed again. Steamy, hot and bothered, ready for January Nights. FLY Nightclub hosted DJ Kitty Glitter for her first appearance of 2014, while hotties: Mike Batt, Javier S., Pavil and Daniel Valdes, jammed the room with beau’mec fierceness. Late night gossip sessions with Cassandra Moore shared bets on Drag Race Season 6 (#teamcourtney), while Kitty Glitter purred in fascination over her first Canadian snowfall. Queens and Drag Race royals continued to own the runway on Jan.11th, when OUTtv, Embrace Productions, LogoTV and World of Wonder, teamed with PRISM events, to stage RuPaul’s Drag Race ‘Battle of Seasons’ at the Danforth Music Hall; a battle-royale hosted by Michelle Visage featuring former tv series ODYSSEYMAGAZINE.NET • JANUARY 15, 2014

contestants Willam, Ivy Winters, Pandora Boxx, Manila Luzon, Carmen Carrera and Jinx Monsoon. Local queens can bob their weaves to salute Gairy Brown and Walther Aguilar for bringing a killer troupe of Big-Wigs north of the border. Note: RuPaul’s Drag Race, Season 6, begins on OUTtv next month (February). But it ain’t all a drag in Toronto. According to Trevor Hamden of World Pride 2014 a whole spectrum of Arts and Culture Events are heading Toronto-way. A detailed Arts and Culture announcement is scheduled for release later this month, chock-a-block with info hinting at 10 days of spectacular programming - a unlike any regular pride, this Supermegatron ‘World Pride’ of Prides will start with an unforgettable Opening Ceremonies filled with music, artistry, colour and flare. Congrats! to Pride Toronto’s Executive Director, Kevin Beaulieu, named by The Toronto Star as a person to watch in 2014! WANT TO MARCH AT WORLD PRIDE 2014? Registration for the WorldPride Parade is NOW OPEN for anyone from around the world interested in participating - you can now sign up. For more information check out WP14TO. com and on FB and Twitter @WP14TO. On a more somber note Odyssey Magazine shares condolences for village icon George Smitherman and the loss of his husband Christopher Piloso. A community memorial/tribute was held at the Wellesley Community Centre on Jan.3rd with attendence by former Mayor of Toronto Barbara Hall, Ontario’s Premier Kathleen Wynne, Olivia Chow, The 519’s Salah Bachir, PFLAG Moms Marla Green and Jill Holroyd, along with 103.9 ProudFM’s Pearse Murray.

A MAN’S WORLD
BY JOEY VIOLA 3... 2... 1... Happy New Year Odyssey Readers! The clock struck 12 and the ball has dropped! Happy 2014! It’s out with the old and in with the new. 2013 has been quite the year, but now January has arrived and it’s colder than a witch’s tittie in a brass bra. Nobody likes to freeze their balls off so dive into Toronto`s perfect recipe of events to get your chestnuts roasted this record-breaking, iced-over, and frigid winter. Steve Palmer and Francis Gaudreault’s monthly PIT BULL party has become a way of life for the two event coordinators/ promoters and their following. PitBull Xmas Unwrapped at Fly Nightclub (8 Gloucester Street) with DJ Mark Falco and Dwayne Minard, and PitBull Red Light Disctrict NYE at Phoenix Concert Theater (410 Sherbourne Street) with DJ’s Sumation, Mikey Robotic Kid, John Cafferty, and “the walking wet dream” headliner Brian Maier (San Francisco), were just two weeks apart with exceptional turn outs! Both nights brought out the best of the city for some major holiday fun! Sexy Santa Bear made a special appearance at Unwrapped, & hunky headliner Brian Maier led the Red Light Disctrict NYE go-go boys in a masculine debacle of a sweaty good time! (For more info visit www.pitbullevents.com or search “Pit Bull” on Facebook & check out their next two events, F*** Winter, Saturday, February 1st at Fly Nightclub and 2014 Caribbean Cruise, February 8-15, departing from the Port of Miami.) Whether you want to hit the
slopes going skiing, snowboarding, and tubing, or enjoy the many other activities Blue Mountain has to offer like the aquatics center or the ridge-river coaster, there’s a lot to do indoors and out, top to bottom. Valentine’s Day is still some time away and winter is far from over. This season might be nature’s way of saying “up yours”, but the bears in this city aren’t the type to hibernate.
The Q&A Featured Artist
Scarlett BoBo gets up close & personal with:
TRISTAN JACKSON HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC? Eclectic! When I write, I pull inspiration from so many different genres and I like to experiment with a lot of different sounds. In the end we blend it all out into some really great sounding Pop music. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO THE MUSIC BUSINESS AND BECOME A SINGER? For me, music is like a drug. From the time I was 5 years old I was singing along to every song on the radio. My parents put me in piano lessons when I was 7, and when I entered highschool I experimented with any musical instrument I could get my hands on. Any chance I had to get on stage I took and each time I did there was a passion in me that kept getting stronger. When I was 21 I bought some studio equipment, the basics that I needed to start writing my own music, and my inspirations continue to evolve and grow today. YOUR SONG AND CAMPAIGN "SAVE THE WORLD TONIGHT" IS VERY INSPIRING AND THOUGHTFUL. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT IT AND WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU? Save the World Tonight has such a strong message that relates to courage and the power to overcome. When I heard about what happened with Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, a donation to the Red Cross just didn't feel like enough. As a musician I felt that I had a bigger platform to go out and try to make a bigger difference, through a medium that has had such a positive impact on my own life. WHO WOULD YOU SAY IS A ROLE MODEL TO YOU. PERSONAL/FICTIONAL. DEAD/ ALIVE. WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO? This is a very interesting question for me. In my personal life, I have always been very ODYSSEYMAGAZINE.NET • JANUARY 15, 2014
independent. I am the type of guy to blaze my own trail and never really felt the need to look up to anyone else because I set such high goals for myself. Musically, I have always had so much respect for Alanis Morrissette. Her style, musicianship, and her ability to articulate herself in a way no one else does is really something to admire. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR CAREER? I can barely see where I'll be in the next 5 days! I take each day as it comes, right now I have been working on a few EDM tracks for DJ's in the USA as well as overseas and some right here in Canada. These collaboratoins are something I would like to continue to work on and grow. My career goal over the next while is to get back to writing and compile some great new pop songs, along the lines of Save The World Tonight, for a full album. I'VE BEEN CREEPING YOUR FACEBOOK AND DANG, YOU'RE CUTE. TELL ME WHAT YOUR LOVE LIFE IS LIKE. (IF IT'S NOT TOO PERSONAL LOL). ARE YOU SINGLE?! AND IF SO, WHAT WOULD IT TAKE FOR A GIRL LIKE ME TO GO ON A DATE WITH YOU!? My love life is...stable. Let's leave it at that lol! I am a romantic at heart, I love to be surprised, and I love creativity. If you are going to win me over, don't take me to dinner and a movie. I LOVE YOUR HIT "ANTIGRAVITY", (I THINK I'M FAN GIRL-ING). WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION AND MOTIVE BEHIND THE WRITING OF THAT SONG? Antigravity is really about your first experience with love. We put so much effort into finding it, wondering what it feels like, is it right, is it wrong? Sometimes it is right in front of us
but we are too busy looking everywhere else to really open our eyes and see it. SO FROM ONE PERFORMER TO ANOTHER, DO YOU EVER GET STAGE FRIGHT? AND IF SO, WHAT DO YOU DO?! YES! That's why we are performers, we love the rush and adrenaline that getting up on that stage gives us. If you don't get nervous there's something wrong! For me, the best thing is to go for a walk or run by myself - try to shake out some of the nervous energy. After that I rely on the people around me to slap me around a little bit! ANY ADVICE FOR FAN GIRLS LIKE ME OR LITTLE SINGERS LOOKING UP TO YOU?! Never give up. Whenever you hear that little voice in the back of your head, squash it. No one in this world can tell you how big to dream, so figure out what you want and go after it! WHAT CAN WE EXPECT NEXT FROM YOU?! SPILL THE T!!! There are a few really exciting collaboration projects in the works right now, and the possibility of a music video for Save The World Tonight. Be sure to keep an eye on www.tristanjackson. ca for all of the latest news, shows, and happenings with me. Also, BIG NEWS!! THE CUCARACHAS FT KEVIN AVIANCE - Sushi Darling (Kinetika) This has been the track of the year for me. Super excited about my new collaborative project The Cucarachas, and always love some Kevin Aviance fierceness. Darling, we better do it and work! 2. ROGER SANCHEZ - My Roots * Technasia mix (Stealth) This is the perfectly balanced track for me right now. Super hot groove and one simple hooky vocal totally tweaked out with effects. Could dance to this all night. It’s so amazing! So amazing! 3. MIKE Q - The Masterblaster (Fade To Mind) Runway alert! Mike Q takes on one of my all time favorites and turns it out in his ballroom style. It’s really doing it for me right now in a big way!!

Resident DJ at Pitbull (TO), Maninfest (MEX), Church On Church (TO), Tech-tosterone (NYC), Steamworks (RO) ♥ Loves: Double Baselines, Roller Coasters, and my Mama ♥ 1. HA*RVEY MCKAY - Lost * Original Mix (Drumcode) This deep tech track has an old school feel but tears up the dance floor like thunderous tech. The vocal and deep synth give this track soul but the drums make it a peak hour gem. 2. TOM STEPHAN & PAGANO - Give It * Oscar L NYC Remix (Almibar) This dirty remix by Oscar L stomps in like a beast. Wrap that up with a diva sample from the past and you get this amazing dance floor killer. 3. BREACH - Everything You Never Had (We Had It All) feat Andreya Triana (Extended_Club_Version) (Big Beat / Atlantic) House music for ever! Breach, aka Ben Westbeech, has been turning heads on a more mainstream level bringing back ‘House Music‘ to the charts with “Jack”, and now this beautiful track!!

Resident DJ at Guvernment, Fly, Footwork / Coda, Comfort Zone (TO), Hush (Victoria) and has burned up the decks in the US, Mexico, UK, Germany and Taiwan. ♥ Loves: onesies in winter, Armistead Maupin and ginger bears ♥ 1. CHUS, CEBALLOS & OSCAR DI RIVIERA – Blowin Minds (Stereo) Once again, a Kylie Minogue sample is brought back to life with this sexy, late night, dark and menacing groove. This makes my mom dance around the room like a white girl!! 2. JAY VEGAS & RESCUE - Power Express * Jorge Montia & Deko-ze (Jungle Funk Recordings) The original version is a full on peak time stormer! I teamed up with Spain’s Jorge Montia to do a deeper, bass driven tech house mix. 3. FULL INTENTION – ‘ll Be (BluFin) A blissed out, melancholic track using a classic Tranquility Bass sample. I ended my set at Fly on NYE and saw all the guys with smiles on their faces and their eyes closed as they got lost in this deep groove.
