As you all know nightlife in NYC has made and is still making many changes... places closing, parties moving and new bars and clubs coming. That being said, XL Nightclub has opened its doors to welcome promoter Dougie Meyer to its venue. He’s the man producing the XL Saturday Night Dance Party. On the main floor was DJ Steve Sidewalk who turned out the dance floor for hot gays who worked their moves to a packed house, wall to wall and shirtless as they carried on...yummy just yummy, I tell you. It was an interesting night and I made it a point to sit back and take it all in, indulging myself for the first time into voyeurism. I have to say the gay community can be a wild group, and probably no other community would see us as boring. We have the right to have fun, be different, and yes gay; and the opening night of Dougie’s Saturday Night Dance Party was proof of that. The room was on the move as was the staff member from Splash Bar who joined in. They are in their new home and from what I can see, the transition to the new venue went well. XL has put into place Musical Mondays with VJ Tony Built, Gay College Tuesdays and XL Saturday Night Dance Party with Dougie Meyer and music by DJ Steve Sidewalk. Incredible night guys, congratulations! Always a pleasure seeing: Roze Black, Skyla Versai, José Colón, Kristian Becker, Nathan Kelly and Jk Prima. I was asked by Chris Ryan and Darren Melchiorre to emcee the Shineout Music Festival Spotlight Series at XL Nightclub. Being a singer and gay man, I gladly signed on to show support for the event. The night was incredible. The love and support in the room gave true meaning to the reality that music is universal and can overcome all. Music by Dychro. Nice tunes, mister! The artists all performed live, and that in itself gives credence. Should “big artists” remember this when they opt to lip-synch? The performers were fabulous and giving of themselves for the cause. night: Andromeda, Night Club, Liquid Diet, and of course, our very own Meg who is loved and adored by so many on the nightlife scene. I have tell the tale about when Brian Landeche first opened the doors to Splash Bar, a place so many called home, it was quite grand. It marked a turning point in New York City Gay Nightlife that changed the way we partied in our city. He gave us beauty and hard bodies along with great music by great DJ’s and fabulous drag queens and dancers. Each time we walked into the now legendary Splash Bar, we always left happy.

So many memories come to mind, but I have to say, the greatest one of all was the time Splash Bar had a float in the New York City Gay Parade. The Splash staff was dressed as Egyptian Pharaoh’s, and yes, the outfits were small and revealing as their beautiful bodies and chiseled faces looked out upon the crowd that lined the streets of New York City. You heard a loud roar as they went by, people screaming, and cameras flashing. It was a moment in time that may never be again. Brian’s vision and love for beauty became known worldwide through the eyes of Splash. When gay men made their way to our fine city, they always made it a point to say “I want to see Splash and the Beautiful Men”, and that’s just what they saw upon entering. Splash was an amazing place that gave so many wonderful memories which we’ll forever speak of...Thank you, Brian, for giving us Splash. It will always stay as “Among My Souvenirs” (Connie Francis). Best to You Always... Love, Hugs and Kisses. Best always, Frankie C. thecolumnbyfrankiec@gmail.com Follow me on twitter: @FrankieC_ thecolumnbyfrankiec.blogspot.com

WIGS THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF

BY SHERRY VINE

I admit to gushing over drag performers. It’s not because I’m kissing ass. What could I possibly gain by kissing Bianca del Rio’s stubbly, pimply ass? Excuse me, I’ll be right back - I have to barf. Seriously, I happen to love drag and am thrilled when I see talent. It excites me and it inspires me and makes me happy. Well, right now I need to rave about RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5 Winner, Jinkx Monsoon. Jinkx is starring with Major Scales in the sold out hit, “The Vaudevillians”, and I am telling you… you need to go! It’s hilarious, creative, smart, bawdy, and so much more. I was literally on the edge of my seat, cracking up, unable to take my eyes off Jinkx who is the campiest (in the absolute best way) performer I’ve seen in a long time!!! SEE IT! Speaking of Bianca, I ran into it in Cherry Grove this weekend. I was performing at The Ice Palace with one of my dearest sisters, Porsche. What a gorgeous night! First we went to see the legendary (yes, this word is overused, but in this case it is true!) Chita Rivera!! Honey, this is how it’s done! Chita is 80! Yes, someone is actually older than Lady Bunny. But that did not even slow her down. She looks phenomenal, was kicking up her heels and turned out every single note of every single song. I was taking notes because Chita knows how to sell a song! She set an example of how every performer, myself certainly included, should treat each show as if it’s the most important show of your life. There was no phoning it in. Here was a legend who has worked with EVERYONE at the Ice Palace on Fire Island working her tush off! Brava Chita!!! After Chita, Justin Vivian Bond and I were gagging over the show and sharing a delicious Jack Daniels and ginger ale. Viv is the one who introduced me to this delectable cocktail. Then Porsche and I rocked the packed house with our show. Was so fun, and I love seeing DJ Chuck and the gang. Once a year is not enough. Also ran into Tina Burner,

BIGNEWS:

Ice Palace: Icon Series but luckily I was leaving as she was arriving. LOL. Just kidding!! Love me some Tina - um, Burner that is! I did many, many Pride Events this summer and the last one was in Wilkes-Barre, PA. I rode up with Adam Barta and the Von Legges (Francis and Tracy). The car ride alone was hilarious, especially our stop at Friendly’s in a very rural part of NE Penn! Saturday night, I performed at Twist with the local queens who were beyond nice!! Soooo sweet! They definitely like to booze it up, and so my “I’m just having one drink and heading home early” turned into “Oh shit, the lights are coming on and I’m bombed!” lol. But it was well worth it… until the next morning at 10am when I had to get in drag to begin the 6 hour outdoor Gay Pride Festival! lol. Luckily, it was a beautiful day and not too hot. I was surprised not only that there was a Pride event in this part of the country, but that there was such a great turnout. Lots of straight people who were supporting us too. Not everyone is a homophobe - thank goddess! They were loving the show. I was on last as there were so many kids, and my show is very adult! So at 5pm I made the announcement that they had 10 minutes to clear the field before I started singing about sucking cock! No one left! lol. After that, I had about 2 hours before the club appearance. So what did I do? Rest? Eat?

No - we shot a video in the woods! The video of Lady GaGa practicing Marina Abravomic method had just come out and since I was in the woods with Francis, we were like, “We have to”. So we did. You can see it on my YouTube channel. Then I re-powdered to cover my incoming beard and went to do our final show at Twist before the drive home. The drive home was a trip. We got lost twice - thanks Siri - and had to pull over at a 7-11 in bumfuck. We asked the lady at the register how to get back on the highway. Well, she looked us up and down and said we better get on the highway asap as this was not a place for us to be lost! lol. Adam was like, “Huh?” I said, “That means queens and homes - hit it!” She cracked up and we hightailed it out of there and finally made it home. Whew! MEOW! LADY BUNNY

During Bush’s presidency, Britney Spears was asked how she thought he was doing. Her response was something like, “I just think we ought to trust the president.” (At the time, the president was engaged in a baseless, illegal war against Iraq.) Britney is stupid and seems to be on drugs. So what’s your excuse for trusting the government? Now our top news story is chatter which has revealed possible Al Qaeda plots to attack embassies and as a result, we’ve shut many of them down all over the world. I don’t want terror attacks and we should be on guard for legally-obtained chatter, but I also can’t ignore these points. In the same way that Bush manipulated us into a state of panic with the color-coded terror alert system, this chatter comes at a very convenient time. The Obama administration and Congress are unpopular. What perfect timing! The chatter will make us afraid and in fear, we’ll rally behind the government which can protect us from the Muslim boogeyman. Our government will magically become heroes and protectors and not so unpopular all of a sudden. And we’ll forgive the government for its surveillance on US citizens which has ODYSSEYMAGAZINE.NET • AUGUST 21–SEPTEMBER 3, 2013

BRITNEY IS STUPID AND SEEMS TO BE ON DRUGS. SO WHAT’S YOUR EXCUSE FOR TRUSTING THE GOVERNMENT?

shocked the nation since it was discovered how heavily the Obama administration was spying on us. With this mounting Al Qaeda threat, we’ll gladly give up more civil liberties just to stay safe. (Safe from a threat that we’re learning of from a government we shouldn’t trust unless we’re Britney Spears.) Republican hawks like Lindsey Graham, the Sissy Hawk, are using this chatter as an excuse to justify the NSA program—actually agreeing with democrats for once. And yes, it’s easy for obstructionist republicans to reach across the aisle and agree with them when democrats start acting like republicans. Obama’s a specialist in this field. As Glenn Greenwald pointed out: “And so, here we are in the midst of, you know, one of the most intense debates and sustained debates that we’ve had in a very long time in this country over the dangers of excess surveillance, and suddenly

an administration that has spent two years claiming that it has decimated al-Qaeda decides that there is this massive threat that involves the closing of embassies and consulates throughout the world.” I hope there isn’t a threat at all. But if there is a real threat, anyone who exploits it is a low-down skunk. This seems like it could be a bipartisan coalition of skunks in both parties designed to trick us. And if we were truly worried about stopping terrorism, maybe we should stop creating generations of terrorists who arise directly as a result of US foreign policy. You don’t wage illegal wars like the one in Iraq and send drones to bomb innocent children without serious repercussions for decades to come. They’ll pop up at 9/11, at the Pentagon, on airlines and at marathons in Boston. Unless we stop the US foreign policy which creates more of them.

Come fly with WE! WE Party comes to NYC with Labor Day’s Biggest Dance Party this Labor Day weekend. The greatest party in the world flies into the greatest city in the world for the biggest holiday party ever. Thousands of sexy party boys are flying in from around the world to experience WE Party: Airlines as it lands into New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Saturday August 31st from 10pm to 6am. The legendary concert hall will be transformed into an airport with check-in counters, gates, concessions, and special lounges. Also inside will be the world’s most spectacular mega club complete with six points of line array concert sound, hundreds of moving lights, full color lasers, 3-D LED visual walls, and stunning performances direct from Spain. NYC’s own original queen of the circuit, Morabito, will kick off the journey, followed by Spain’s hottest export, DJ Manual de Diego. DJ Brett Henrichsen will then step into the cockpit adding a healthy dose of turbulence followed by a smooth landing. “This will be the first time New Yorkers will actually enjoy going through security,” promises Victor Pallas of WE Party Madrid. “Once past the friendly T&A screening, passengers can choose between stepping into the pressurized, climate controlled cabin and embarking on the flight of a lifetime, or relaxing in the Mile High Club airport lounge for some special on the ground services. In both areas, specially trained flight attendants will attend to the every need of passengers before, during and after departure.” The Hammerstein Ballroom has hosted several large concert events for major pop artists including Kylie Minogue, Patti LaBelle and Rihanna as well as a massive dance event for Tiësto. Several seasons of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” have also been taped at the theater. The last time a dance event of similar magnitude was produced at Hammerstein was Victor Calderone’s landmark Caligula Pride Event of 2001. Caligula featured a full symphony orchestra accompanying Cyndi Lauper as she sang her classic hit, “True Colors”. “We are re-introducing NYC to this spectacular venue. This Labor Day event will be the biggest WE Party ever produced in the entire world,” continues Pallas. Tickets are available now at www. wepartyairlines.com. Passengers can choose between economy and first class fares, each with their own special amenity packages and access to special areas of the plane. There are even a limited amount of tickets available for the exclusive MILE HIGH CLUB.

DESTINATION: DOMINATION NYC Aims to Reclaim Gay Party Capital Status

KRISTINE W

BY TOM HUTNICK “Destination will be about movement, motion, evolution, sex and sensuality,” promises two-time Grammy nominated remixer and producer, DJ Tony Moran about his new party, accelerating into XL Nightclub (512 W 42nd St) on Saturday, August 24th. Moran will steer the decks, along with Brazilian DJ Gustavo Scorpio. Partygoers will also be treated to special live performances by international superstars Kristine W and Vernessa Mitchell and will get to experience never before seen Tony Moran-mixed music videos, seamlessly integrated into Tony’s musical set, displayed on a customized fifty foot video wall. Doors open at 11pm, with free admission before 12am.Tickets are available now at www.xlnightclub.com. WHERE DID THE IDEA FOR DESTINATION COME FROM? I wanted to recapture the greatness of a New York City dance floor. I love all the Spanish parties but I want the Spaniards to be copying NYC again.

WHY LAUNCH THE EVENT AT XL? XL gave me creative freedom to bring in extra sound and audio-visual equipment to take the experience to a higher level. It’s not just about me in the booth. It’s about making the dancefloor special and unique -- to emblazon new memories. HOW WILL YOU TRANSFORM XL FOR DESTINATION? We are creating a gigantic DNA installation that will ompletely cover the dance floor. THE PARTY WILL FEATURE A SEAMLESS INTEGRATION OF MUSIC VIDEOS SYNCHED TO YOUR MIXES. HOW IS THIS MADE POSSIBLE? This is a brand new feature of my parties. I won’t be becoming a video jock, but rather, using Pioneer Pro DJ technology with technology that I’ve hunted the world high and low for. As we speak, my full length mixes and remixes are being synchronized by my studio team to have a visual element. I can completely beatmix the songs with video into my set without interruption. The idea is for the visuals to be much

DJ TONY MORAN

VERNESSA MITCHELL

more than just the dancers, performers and lights. This will bring to life many more songs than it’s possible to do by having performances. Consider it many sequenced performances in one night, non-stop!

FLAVA

BUT YOU WILL HAVE PERFORMERS, INCLUDING KRISTINE W! Kristine and I go way back. She’s iconic for New York City since her first song, “Feel What You Want” was broken in NYC. I just finished a remix for her that I’m so proud of. It reshapes her new song, “So Close To Me” for the progressive worldwide movement. YOU WILL ALSO BE DEBUTING YOUR FIRST EVER COLLABORATION WITH VERNESSA MITCHELL. HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? The timing was just right! I’ve always admired Vernessa. Her voice slays me and I love the message of her songs. I had been reaching out to her over the past few months. Luckily things just fell into place. I created it with the engineer who created all her

hits. Now he’s on my team! Our track is gonna blow NYC away. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE FLAVA TO HOST? Flava is not just a a performer. Flava’s a choreographer and a co-creator of the whole Destination experience. Flava’s all about evolution and starting a new revolution at Destination. Quite simply, Flava’s a genius. IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL TO BRING DESTINATION TO OTHER CITIES? You bet! In September we will be announcing the next destinations for Destination. We plan to travel to many cities worldwide, just as the Spanish parties do, but we want to go beyond the circuit sound and make our parties more of a New York City thang.

DOORS OPEN AT 11PM, WITH FREE ADMISSION BEFORE 12AM. FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO PURCHASE TICKETS, PLEASE VISIT WWW.XLNIGHTCLUB.COM ODYSSEYMAGAZINE.NET • AUGUST 21–SEPTEMBER 3, 2013

GAYS GOIN’ WILD CELEBRATING TEN YEARS AT SIX FLAGS BY RICHIE ALLEN In celebration of 10 thrill-packed years, Fairgrounds (better known as “Gay and Lesbian Day at Six Flags”) is going wild! Taking place Saturday, September 7, with extended hours from 10:30am til midnight, this year’s event will be the first time in its history that guests will have access to Great Adventure’s all-new Safari Off Road Adventure! The ride takes guests on an intense, up-close animal experience through ponds, up hills, across bridges, and over rugged terrain. It takes 90-minutes, and the attraction closes at 5pm, so producers recommend arriving to the park early. Also open for the first time at Fairgrounds will be the “Sky Way”, a ride that transports guests from Lakefront to Frontier Adventures while offering a bird’s-eye-view of the park in a personal cable car. Ten thousand people are expected to attend this year’s Fairgrounds. “We’re selling tickets to people in Washington DC, Boston, Pittsburg and the entire tri-state area. Fairgrounds

has truly become a gathering for all the area’s LGBT communities,” says co-founder Gage Kristofer. Six Flags Great Adventure is world renowned for its award-winning roller coasters. Amusement Today awarded “El Toro” coaster with its Golden Ticket for being the #2 top wooden coaster in the country. At a record-breaking 76 degree incline, El Toro features the steepest drop of any wooden roller coaster in the USA. They also awarded a Golden Ticket to the “Nitro” coaster, ranking it the #3 steel coaster in the country. Nitro blasts riders 230 feet in the air with a 215-foot drop at speeds approaching 80 mph. There is also “Green Lantern”, a stand-up coaster that delivers a smooth, white-knuckled adventure, upside down on a 15-story ride of twisting steel! Other maximum thrill rides are Batman, Bizzaro, Dare Devil Dive, Kingda Ka, Rolling Thunder, Slingshot, Superman: Ultimate Flight, The Twister and Sky-Screamer, a towering swing ride that climbs twenty-four stories off the

ground and then spins around at 40mph. All will be open at Fairgrounds X. Even with the anticipated record crowd this year, the park can handle 60,000. Six Flags Great Adventure is prepared to keep ride lines moving swiftly at Fairgrounds X. Plus, this year’s VIP pass insures quicker ride access after 8pm. At 8pm, the park will be closed to the public and remain

open exclusively to Fairgrounds X ticket holders. Season passes will not be honored. It is the one night each year when LGBT attendees can walk hand-in-hand and enjoy the open-air thrill rides without fear of harassment. “With the recent supreme court rulings, we have a lot to celebrate this year,” says co-founder Mark Nelson. “Come out to Six Flags and let’s get wild.”
