ponder the full meaning of the notion of peace, seeing that The International Day of Peace is observed around the world each year on 21st September. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a 'Culture of Peace'. The theme for 2017 is Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All. Sadly South Africa features 123 out of 163 on the international Peace Index and Iceland, New Zealand, Portugal, Austria, and Denmark feature as the most peaceful countries while Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, South Sudan, and Yemen are deemed to be the least peaceful. Yet when we look around it seems that peace is such a hard thing to accomplish and what is it anyway? Maybe the best answer here is to read the beautiful words given to us by Khalil Gibran in his poem entitled Peace:

We are incredibly proud that we can celebrate Odyssey Magazine's 40th anniversary with this edition. What an accomplishment indeed. It has never been an easy ride, yet perseverance is something we are most familiar with. This journey at Odyssey's helm has moulded and shaped our character and made us all the stronger. Within that vein we shall continue.

The tempest calmed after bending the branches of the trees and leaning heavily upon the grain in the field. The stars appeared as broken remnants of lightning, but now silence prevailed over all, as if Nature's war had never been fought. At that hour a young woman entered her chamber and knelt by her bed sobbing bitterly. Her heart flamed with agony but she could finally open her lips and say, 'Oh Lord, bring him home safely to me. I have exhausted my tears and can offer no more, oh Lord, full of love and mercy. My patience is drained and calamity is seeking possession of my heart. Save him, oh Lord, from the iron paws of War; deliver him from such unmerciful Death, for he is weak, governed by the strong. Oh Lord, save my beloved, who is Thine own son, from the foe, who is Thy foe. Keep him from the forced pathway to Death's door; let him see me, or come and take me to him.' Quietly a young man entered. His head was wrapped in bandage soaked with escaping life. He approached her with a greeting of tears and laughter, then took her hand and placed it against his flaming lips. And with a voice which bespoke past sorrow, and joy of union, and uncertainty of her reaction, he said, 'Fear me not, for I am the object of your plea. Be glad, for Peace has carried me back safely to you, and humanity has restored what greed essayed to take from us. Be not sad, but smile, my beloved. Do not express bewilderment, for Love has power that dispels Death; charm that conquers the enemy. I am your one. Think me not a spectre emerging from the House of Death to

visit your Home of Beauty. 'Do not be frightened, for I am now Truth, spared from swords and fire to reveal to the people the triumph of Love over War. I am Word uttering introduction to the play of happiness and peace.' Then the young man became speechless and his tears spoke the language of the heart; and the angels of Joy hovered about that dwelling, and the two hearts restored the singleness which had been taken from them. At dawn the two stood in the middle of the field contemplating the beauty of Nature injured by the tempest. After a deep and comforting silence, the soldier said to his sweetheart, 'Look at the Darkness, giving birth to the Sun.'

International Day of Peace

May this indeed be so for all of us, should each one of us welcome a change in perception within and without. Wishing you a blessed time ahead and thank you for supporting us.

LIFE’S LIGHT ‘Tis the dance ‘tween the light and the dark That provides the essential and creative spark That flares into flame, A most wondrous fire Bright, beautiful and wise, By which the inherent desire For the essence of being to so devise Means for life’s becoming to be ours to claim Where we work on our unique way of seeing Becoming each day more fully ourselves As we resolve our own manifested, aspects of being In which both bright light and fathomless dark Reside as our still slumbered Awakening For the expansion and enfoldment That then so dissolves Into knowing that’s full, complete and the seeing, Which is the condition in each longing heart, And is the very point of each living part Of every embodied soul, Whether young or yet so very old.

SPIRITUALITY AND QUANTUM PHYSICS Quantum physics is verifying what Buddhists and other spiritual practitioners have been saying for years, helping people to accept their inherent spiritual nature all around the world. We are fundamentally connected to everything around us, and science is finally proving that. Nevertheless, there’s still a lingering dualistic air surrounding science and spirituality: You have religious people denying scientific facts and scientists identifying themselves as self-proclaimed atheists. However, we’re simultaneously seeing a merging of the two, and it’s truly beautiful. In November 2015, Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, attended a two-day conference on quantum physics and Madhyamaka philosophy in New Delhi. Madhyamaka translates to 'one who holds to the middle' or 'the middle way' and belongs to the Mahayana school of thought in Buddhism, which was developed by the Indian Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna during the second century. GRAVITY-FREE ZONES Gravity, we're told, is just a theory. Or at least, in science we use theories of gravity to explain why objects tend to fall towards the Earth. Gravity is the theory; that objects tend to fall towards the Earth is the fact. But how does science explain weird places where gravity doesn't seem to apply? For instance, scattered around the world are a number of strange, physics-defying 'mystery spots', places where objects appear to roll uphill rather than down, where cyclists struggle to peddle down rather than up. The real explanation, it turns out, is pretty simple, but you might still have a difficult time believing it. Take, for instance, this anti-intuitive gravity hill found in Aryshire, Scotland in the video above. Cars on this road appear to roll uphill, a spooky mirage that has long confused anyone driving along it. But when a road surveyor was asked to take precise measurements, there was nothing spooky about it at all. The end of the road that seemed like it was uphill was actually downhill. So despite appearances, gravity was working exactly as it should. In other words, gravity hills are really just optical illusions. Your brain is being tricked into believing that up is down and down is up, and it comes down to a simple matter of relative perspective.

'Broadly speaking, although there are some differences, I think Buddhist philosophy and Quantum Mechanics can shake hands on their view of the world. We can see in these great examples the fruits of human thinking. Regardless of the admiration we feel for these great thinkers, we should not lose sight of the fact that they were human beings just as we are.' - The Dalai Lama ODYSSEY 10 •

THIRD EYE SPIES

REVOLUTION OF TENDERNESS

Cancelled or banned TED talks are nothing new. When coming across information, no matter how much evidence it has behind it, any topic that challenges the current accepted framework of knowledge will always encounter a harsh resistance. Scientists and new discoveries were and are still scorned by those in power, a classic example would be Galileo and the Catholic Church, or when we realised the Earth is round, but have things really changed that much? Well, judging by the fact that TED continues to censor information, perhaps not. Russell Targ is a physicist, author, pioneer in the development of the laser and laser applications and a cofounder of the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) investigation of psychic abilities in the 1970s and 1980s. His TED Talk was cancelled, which is odd considering that his topics aren't exactly 'debatable' as his results were officially de-classified after more than two decades of secrecy. Third Eye Spies is a new documentary feature film by award winning director Lance Mungia consisting of compellingly cinematic re-enactments of actual remote viewings done at Stanford Research Institute for intelligence agencies. This includes amazing new data retrieved from recently declassified documents via the Freedom of Information Act, and over 30 interviews with every top player involved and how those discoveries are being used today.

Pope Francis has been featured in a lot of headlines lately, as he’s become a popular beacon of light for many non-Christians because he preaches equality and kindness, offering a very different (and frankly more compassionate) perspective than previous Popes. This has caused some confusion, given that the Vatican is perceived negatively by many due to its ties to sexual abuse, inequality, knowledge suppression, and more. Nevertheless, Pope Francis has an important message for us all, which is that we need a 'revolution of tenderness'. This time around, his message came by way of a surprise video that aired at the international TED conference recently. Pope Francis delivered this message in front of a room full of scientists, academics, tech innovators, investors, and cultural elites. Many people who follow Christianity choose to only abide by the staunch commandments and old belief systems taught by the religion, further perpetuating separatism, racism, and inequality. This often includes the people who are considered to be at the top of the chain like popes and priests. It’s fascinating that the Pope chose to mention this parable, as it paints a more negative light upon the 'higher members' of the Christian faith.

LOVE WHAT YOU DO: A Motivational Video with Steve Jobs

THE TIME IS NIGH Are humans an endangered species? Some scientists think so. Author Phil Torres wrote a piece for Salon detailing evidence from various sources – from climate change data to a recent article by theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking – showing the possibility of an apocalypse that could occur in some of our lifetimes. Torres said, 'We are in a unique moment of human history, one marked by an exceptionally high probability of disaster.' Climate change isn’t the only issue humanity must contend with today. Overpopulation, ocean acidification, antibiotic resistance, and the potential of a global pandemic threaten us. In a December 2016 article for The Guardian, Hawking said, 'Now, more than at any time in our history, our species needs to work together…we are at the most dangerous moment in the development of humanity. We now have the technology to destroy the planet on which we live, but have not yet developed the ability to escape it.' But we don’t have to go the way of the dinosaurs just yet. Hawking said humanity must break down barriers inside and outside nations, and help equip people for a changing economy with training and financial support. He said he is an optimist for our species, but elites must learn lessons from 2016 – and 'above all a measure of humility''

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL WITH NEW CROP CIRCLES IN THE UK The UK is no stranger to crop circle formations. Four more incredible designs popped up recently with the first design being discovered on May 21 in the county of Wiltshire. The circles were documented via drone footage, thanks to Matthew Williams, via Crop Circle Connector, a website dedicated to documenting crop circle formations all over the world. Keep in mind that there are also many hoaxes out there, clearly the work of a bunch of pranksters. But we shouldn’t let that fact take away from the fact that there have been hundreds of documented formations that are so complex and so unbelievable in their nature that they’ve been subject to scrutiny at the highest levels of science. The video footage above is extraordinary, especially with regards to the close up footage where you can plainly see the pattern in which the crop has been pushed down

WATERY ATMOSPHERE ON NEPTUNE-LIKE EXOPLANET

OUR TWIN SOLAR SYSTEM MAY HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED

Using the Hubble Space Telescope, Hannah Wakeford and her colleagues looked at exoplanet HAT-P-26b and were happy to discover water in its atmosphere. Sitting about 440 light years away from our solar system, the exoplanet shares a mass similar to Neptune’s.

Astronomers at NASA have uncovered a solar system they believe to be 'remarkably similar' to Earth’s. The system, around the star Epsilon Eridani, is considered a possible breakthrough in better understanding how our planet and its neighbours were formed.

WEIGHING THE MASS OF A STAR IS NOW A RELAITY

Quantum entanglement transmitted through space

Society has come to respect Albert Einstein for his astonishing intellect, particularly after he mapped out his famous theory of general relativity. However, one of his predictions, which he never thought would be directly observed, has recently been proven correct.

Of all the anti-intuitive phenomena of quantum mechanics, entanglement might just be the most unbelievable. It defies every intuition we have about space and distance and challenges us to consider that distance might actually be a figment of our imaginations, that space might be unreal on the quantum level. LINKS TO ATLANTIS? A Portuguese news outlet has reported the discovery of a very large underwater pyramid, first discovered by Diocleciano Silva, between the islands of São Miguel and Terceira in the Azores of Portugal. Silva says the structure is perfectly squared and oriented by the cardinal points. Current estimates obtained using GPS digital technology put the height at 60m with a base of 8 000m2. The Portuguese Hydrographic Institute of the Navy currently has the job of analysing the data to determine whether or not the structure is manmade. Further investigations, based on more recent scans, are pointing to the possibility of this actually being an underwater volcanic hill. While more information should come come out soon, some believe this new explanation may be a coverup, but that position remains speculation at this point.

HAS ATLANTIS REALLY BEEN FOUND? In this video, right, television crew for History Channel followed a group of explorers who believe they may have found evidence of the lost ancient civilisation of Atlantis. The ancient Greeks were divided as to whether Plato’s story was to be taken as history or mere metaphor. Since the 19th century there has been renewed interest in linking Plato’s Atlantis to historical locations, most commonly the Greek island of Santorini, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption around 1 600 BC. From time to time, archaeologists and historians locate evidence – a swampy, prehistoric city in coastal Spain; a suspicious undersea rock formation in the Bahamas (as in the video, right) – that might be a source of the Atlantis story.

According to the legend, there was an eighth continent known as Atlantis. This mysterious continent was said to have sunk a long time ago and when it did it took all of its orichalum with it. Orichalcum is a metal that is mentioned in several ancient writings including the story of Atlantis in the Critias dialogue, which was recorded by Plato around 360 BC. According to the dialogue, orichalcum was very valuable and was second only to gold in value. In 2015, a team of divers said they had recovered no less than 39 blocks of this precious metal from a shipwreck that is believed to have happened 2 600 years ago. A more recent analysis showed the 'orichalcum' found was an alloy of 75-80% copper, 15-20% zinc, along with some traces of nickel, lead and iron.

KING TUT'S TOMB STILL CONTAINS MYSTERIES A team of Italian researchers plans to open a new investigation into the possibility that his tomb has a secret, hidden chamber, reports Seeker. Researchers from the Polytechnic University in Turin plan to enter the tomb and use radar technology that is capable of scanning depths as much as 32 feet. This will be the third probe into the tomb in the past two years. But the project director physics professor Franco Porcelli said that this probe will reveal once and for all if King Tut's tomb hides a secret chamber.

5 000-year-old city surfaces The remains of a 5 000-year-old city, including a cemetery and several houses, have been unearthed at the site of Abydos in Egypt. The city, whose size is not clear, dates to the early dynastic period when the first pharaohs ruled a united Egypt, said Mahmoud Afifi, the head of Ancient Egyptian Antiquities at the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities. Photos released on in November of 2016 by the ministry show the remains of buildings made of mud bricks and organic materials that are now mostly decayed, along with pottery and stone tools found inside the structures. In addition, a necropolis (cemetery) holding at least 15 burials was found near the city, according to the ministry statement.

NEW PHAROAH STATUE UNEARTHED A massive, broken statue possibly dating back more than 3 000 years was recently discovered in the Cairo suburb of Mattarya. Archeologists from Egypt and Germany made the discovery while working in a muddy pit near the ruins of Ramses II's temple in the ancient city of Heliopolis. They believe the statue, carved from a tough stone called quartzite, depicts Ramses II himself; one of the most famed and powerful rulers in ancient Egypt.

There are some people who speculate to this day what exactly the Knights Templar discovered when they excavated the Temple Mount (now called the Dome of the Rock) in the early years of the 12th century. But, possible finds of great archeological treasures aside, most of what the Templars found is there for all to see – you only need the eyes to look and to know what you are seeing. The Templar tradition of hiding things 'in plain sight' has also been followed by their spiritual successors, the Freemasons. The latter are not, despite hysterical and poorly argued conspiracy theories, a bunch of dark-minded maniacs plotting in back rooms to 'take over the world'. They represent but one of several threads of a truly ancient 'wisdom tradition' which has its origins deep in the many millennia of our dimly perceived prehistory. It is a tradition of ideas and ideals, embedded in symbols, rituals and practises, that stretches back far past the earliest Greek times and beyond, before even the era of Egypt at its pyramid-building height. And almost all of this can be worked out simply through observation and a minimum of study, though it helps to know something about recorded history too. We take a closer look.

n the intelligence community, the way people (spies) work is called 'trade-craft'. The combination of both a 'trade' which is also a 'craft' did not start with this

community – it is older yet than James Bond by far. But in some fashion the term applies because spies are good at doing what they do 'in plain sight' – people just don't realise it. The same may be said of the Templars and Freemasons, among others. The whole notion of a specialised 'trade' which is also a 'craft' – and which, in its practical and symbolic application, carries embedded knowledge that represents much of humankind's collective memory of itself as a species – lies squarely, if one might so say, with what today is known as Freemasonry. The reliance on systems of codification, along with use of what was then advanced design technology, and the practical applications of both 'crafts', in peace and war, were key aspects of the methods of the Templars and their co-creators, the Medieval masons. Working together, masons and Templars literally and figuratively built the foundations of what today is called the 'modern world' – neither could do it without the other group's collective skills, knowledge and distilled wisdom, and both required a lifelong dedication to a cause much

It is no accident that Catharcism arose in the Languedoc region of France at roughly the same time as the Templars emerged – both groups share their roots in the same ancient wisdom tradition

Knights Templar

The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (in Latin, Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Salomonici), also known as the Order of Solomon's Temple, the Knights Templar, or simply as Templars, was a Catholic military order recognised in 1139 by papal bull Omne Datum Optimum. The order was founded in 1119 and active from about 1129 to 1312. The order, which virtually instantly became wealthy and very powerful, was a favoured 'charity' throughout Christendom and grew rapidly in membership and influence. Templar knights, in their distinctive white mantles with a red cross, were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades. Non-combatant members of the order managed a large economic infrastructure throughout Christendom, developing innovative financial techniques that were an early form of banking, and built hundreds of fortifications, cathedrals, churches and abbeys across Europe and the Holy Land.

Working together, masons and Templars literally and figuratively built the foundations of what today is called the 'modern world' – neither could do it without the other group's collective skills, knowledge and distilled wisdom, and both required a lifelong dedication to a cause much greater than the individuals involved. That is the known 'exoteric' story of the Templars – the 'inner truth' is even more interesting and significant. That the Templars were ever formed is due to a line of tradition, handed down, father-to-son, by people who once lived in the Holy Land but had relocated to France shortly after the time of the man most people know as Jesus (whose actual name was Jeshua ben Joseph). The period from Jesus's birth to about three decades after his death was rife with rebellion in Palestine/Israel/ the Holy Land, culminating with an uprising that saw most Romans occupiers killed by the zealots, along with most collaborators. Some well-to-do Jewish families fled during the uprising, but many more did so too when the Romans determined to wipe out the Jewish rebels once and for all, sending at least three legions to get the job done, which they did. The Romans made a point of destroying Solomon's Temple (for the second time, the Babylonians have already done so several centuries prior) and eradicating the last surviving zealots at Masada. But that was not before many 'treasures' were buried beneath the Temple Mount and a number of leading families managed to flee with much of their wealth. Where did they go? To southern France, directly

These were some of the achievements of the Templars. But they were too successful. So it was that Philip IV of France – deeply in debt to the order – took advantage of circumstances to eliminate his debt. On Friday October 13, 1307, and, in collusion with the weak Pope Clement V, over whom Phillip had almost complete control, the French king had many of the order's members in France arrested, tortured into giving false confessions, and burned at the stake. Others were imprisoned and tortured, only to be released after 'confessing', and then were re-accused of heresy and put to death. The Templars ostensibly then 'disappeared' through most of Europe, the order finally being disbanded, again under Papal decree, in 1312.

In plain sight

But the Templars had always known that what they held as sacred was not strictly doctrinally 'correct' and that they had, therefore, to be highly secretive with both their initiation rites and practises, as well as with their system of cyphers and codes. Part of what they had brought back as 'ancient wisdom' was not merely the technology to build soaring new edifices to the Divine in the form of Cathedrals like Chartres in Paris, but something about Christianity and the Divine itself

But the Templars had always known that what they held as sacred was not strictly doctrinally 'correct' and that they had, therefore, to be highly secretive with both their initiation rites and practises, as well as with their system of cyphers and codes. Part of what they had brought back as 'ancient wisdom' was not merely the technology to build soaring new edifices to the Divine in the form of Cathedrals like Chartres in Paris, but something about Christianity and the Divine itself – something, from their perspective, incredibly dangerous and, from the church's, highly destabilising to accepted Catholic doctrine.

and, from the church's, highly destabilising to accepted Catholic doctrine. It was, in essence, that God was not merely 'Father', but also 'Mother'. That Divinity in incarnation was not merely Jeshua but also twinned with the Magdalene, and that the overly masculinised Christianity of the early part of the second millennium AD was a gross distortion of what had been taught at the feet of Jeshua. At the root of this notion is the fundamental principle that masculine and feminine, as dualistic expressions of the 'inexpressible God', had to be in balance, both within individuals and within society as a whole (see accompanying box Masculine & Feminine Divine). That state of affairs could not have been further from the reality of 12th and 13th century Europe. So the Templars put their message out there for all to see for centuries to come, on the understanding, also born of ancient wisdom teachings, that when collective consciousness had shifted and evolved sufficiently, such 'secret knowledge' would be – and would have been in the intervening centuries, for the few that might pick this up – right out in plain sight for anyone to see. Look at the entrances of the great Gothic cathedrals built in such short order by the Templars and their highly skilled masons (and herein lies one connection between

Many – including most of the 'missing' fleet – simply sailed to Portugal where they were welcomed and where they set themselves up as the 'Soldiers of Christ', not even bothering to change their red cross on white tunic uniforms. Almost all the Templar funds that Phillip hoped to seize were also gone when his soldiers moved on Templar properties. Through much of Europe where the Pope's influence was undiminished, the Templars lost their properties, but they did not lose their movable wealth and they retained their knowledge, including that of sailing which they had developed and advanced through extensive sea trading over 200 years, mostly in the Mediterranean but also beyond. And with that one realises in a single sweep why Portugal, within 100 years, was the world's leading sea power and explorer nation. The Templars, in their new guise, kept most of their old symbols, also shown in plain sight – like their fleet's flag or ensign, made up of a skull and crossbones on a black background. If this sounds familiar, as in 'Hi, ho me harty, and pass the rum' pirate-like, then you have it. Why the skull and crossbones? It was a reminder to all that at the end of every human journey lies the grave and the

promise – and for some hundreds of years, the sight of it filled sea-going nation's captains and crews with terror. It was not that Templars at sea were suddenly vicious killers, all one-eyed and peg-legged and filled with murderous intent. It was, at first, that those showing this sign were not aligned to any nation and could, therefore, take on any state fleet on the seas, specifically the Spanish. In later years, the use of the Jolly Roger as it became known was less and less associated with its origins and increasingly with plain old piracy, Blackbeard-style – but it was still used with the knowledge that those flying it owed nothing to any earthly authority.

Stone & ritual

Determined never to allow their hard-won knowledge and skills to be suppressed into submission, the Templars declared their beliefs (there are several that Rome didn't like, such as the idea that without John the Baptist there is no 'Jesus' as we have come to know him and so John too must be revered along with Jesus) in stone and in ritual. You may wonder where today you could find this knowledge. In stone, it is in the Templar-built edifices across Europe. The ritual part of a portion of their knowledge can be found by anyone, male or female, and largely unchanged, in the rituals of almost any genuine

what must have been hundreds of years, of the containment walls of the Sphinx, mean that the conventional explanation for the rise of the Egyptian civilisation does not work even remotely adequately. Either way, according to Cayce, the destruction of the last great prehistorical civilisation, Atlantis, culminated with the end of the last Ice Age about 13 000 years ago. Far-flung remnants were left in Egypt and a few other places, such in Turkey at a place recently discovered called Gobekli Tepe, and with scatterlings left through parts of Meso-America, later to be called Mayans or Olmecs by 'for-themost-part-guessing' modern anthropologists and archeologists trying to understand megalithic stone constructions in that part of the world.

Very ancient

However far back this body of knowledge goes, it has elements unchanged over the eons of time which have, for most people, separated the root from today's fruit. These elements are to be found in the ancient megalithic structures previously mentioned which provide incontrovertible proof in stone of a technology long lost to even the most modern of us. To be clear, this technology included the ability to move, with apparent ease, massive stone blocks, and cut them with a precision and methodology yet to be rediscovered.

Not only do we owe the Templars, the Mason, the Rosicrucians, and many others, much of what we now call the modern world – we owe them even more. In their buildings and in their traditions, secret or in plain sight, they have held and still hold the greatest 'secret' of all – and one of the most revolutionary – which is that all people are inherently equal, that none is by birth made 'better' than any other and that it is in how we treat one another as fellow humans, and even how we treat the world in which we live, that we might find the true measure of high-quality people who have allowed us to inherent and develop the freedoms so many now take for granted.

But the evidence is also to be found in more modern

ODYSSEY 27 •

DIGIMAG

structures, such as the many Templar cathedrals and in modern-day Masonic lodges. They are to be found in the practises of both Masons and their Templar brothers (yes, there are indeed modern day Templars) as well as sibling bodies such as the Rosicrucians and some other less well-known mystical or esoteric orders, of which there are a number. You may have followed the argument to this point but wonder at the need in modern society for organisations like the Freemasons, Templars or Rosicrucians to not simply divulge the details of their initiations and practises – after all, anything now goes, more or less, so what's there to hide as it only gives ammunition to know-nothing conspiracy theorists? The answer is that these organisations, and others like them such as some Mystery Schools still teaching aspects of this supposedly arcane ancient wisdom tradition, are not 'secret' in themselves – their practises are kept

fore-knowledge of what is to come. Yet to the knowing eye, almost all that is carried by Freemasonry, today's version of the Templars, the Rosicrucians or any similar bodies, is so apparent as to seem almost 'obvious'. As has been the case for as long as we have had history, some parts of what has come before remain. When expressed by those charged with the care of guarding painfully-garnered and distilled human experience – in other words, wisdom – it is still usually done 'in plain sight' since the purpose was always to protect the wisdom itself, not to hold secrets for their own sake. If you had or have the eyes to see what is on the buildings of the streets you walk along, the statues you may pass, and symbols embedded in all manner of things, then you are alive to this ancient tradition, and it is as clear as if writ large in plain text.

Linguistic clues

But it is not merely in monumental structures and allegory that the wisdom is held – it is alive in our common, daily language too, 'hiding in plain sight' in the words we use. A few examples: doing things 'on the level' and 'by the square', hence a 'square deal'. Or how about 'giving someone the third degree'? Or even how about 'hooking someone up'? The idea of being 'black balled' comes out of the same tradition of usage. Core cultural concepts around the value of wisdom, strength and beauty, as well as faith, hope and love, are all

tradition, which is as present and evident in the parallel Hermetic tradition, is the equivalence of men and women, not just as people but as expressions of Divine creation. More than that, the Masculine and Feminine Divine, in terms of these traditions, reflect the underlying duality of everything. In this understanding, there is an equal and opposite aspect to all things in manifestation, though the 'collapsing' of these dualities does not result in annihilation but rather a transcending synthesis which is the destiny in consciousness of all self-aware beings, such as you and I. This complementarity of 'oppositional' forces is considered in these systems as necessary for the maintenance of the Cosmos as we know and experience it. This idea stretches from the sub-atomic level of oppositional charges and spins, as we now know them, to astronomic features such as black holes and energy-spewing pulsars. We humans, with our domain located somewhere roughly in the middle of those two extremes of physical manifestation, are just as much part of the dualistic picture as any other level of what we might term 'Creation'. While there is some element of 'contention' between

It is no con-incidence that at this time, Sirius lines up perfectly with the Great Pyramid in Egypt. The Goddess Sekhmet who is the Lion Headed Goddess and destroyer of the Ego, is associated with Lions Gate. She is the protector of our Spiritual Nature and fiercely fights to assist us in remembering who we really are, mighty powerful spiritual beings, not the insignificant tiny 'things' that our ego would have us believe. As humans, we need to balance our Feminine side now. Ego, which is masculine in nature, has become far too dominant. Feminine energy is soft, flowing, abundant, loving and joyful. It is no co-incidence that the mystical Sphinx embraces and enhances our Feminine nature. To sit between her paws is to be nurtured by the Goddess, bringing feelings of surrender, trust, flow and pure love. Now is the perfect time to start remembering your magnificence and acting on it. The portal was open, the energy being felt most significantly on 8.08.17, but persisting for some time thereafter. Ask the Goddess Sekhmet to assist you to remember your Divinity and let go of the ego that keeps you acting small.

Gods & Goddesses Many of us go through our lives struggling. We get hurt by the opinions and selfish acts of humanity. We retaliate with that same energy. If someone is nasty to us, we feel hurt and fight back. We have forgotten that we are Magnificent Beings. We have also forgotten that those very people who hurt us are also Magnificent Beings. How can we change this behaviour? How can we put an end to this tit-for-tat nastiness and ungodliness? Simply by remembering that we are Gods and Goddesses and allowing ourselves to be just that. That is why we are here on this earth – to end the cycle of birth and rebirth, reincarnation. That is the sole purpose of our life on earth – to remember that we are Unconditional Love. It may be difficult to do this or it may be easy, it is a choice. We either allow our egos to dominate our lives, or we allow Unconditional Love to dominate. The one path is difficult, fraught with fear, lack, greed, selfishness and anger. The other path is filled with joy, abundance, greatness, kindness, fulfilment and love. It is a choice we make. Publisher's Note: In the context being used by the author, the increased 'light' quantum referred to is not something one might measure on, for instance, a lux meter which could tell you how much light your living room lights are producing. Rather, this is a reference to 'light' in the esoteric sense of a greater radiance across the full electromagnetic spectrum, especially those parts not visible to the eye necessarily but which are powerful in their effects on human consciousness. Small increases in this part of the spectrum of electromagnet energy (which can be referred to as 'light', albeit much is unseen and unseeable by us with our eyes) have dramatic and disproportional effects on our consciousnesses, whether we are aware of these effects or not. Being aware of such effects, however, allows us to work with them consciously, thereby enhancing their positive impacts.

Well-known writer and speaker Mike Dooley, who is coming to South Africa soon, discusses how he came to experience what is generally called 'channelling' in this extract from his recent book From Deep Space With Love. In 2014 Tracy released Frank Talk: A Book of Channelled

Wisdom, which while fabulously mind-expanding, raised many more questions. I have since had the great privilege of posing those questions to Frank; their answers created the entirety of this book. At first I simply wanted as much information as possible from these distant and obviously enlightened guides. Yet with hindsight, I saw that both the questions and their answers were forming a foundation of knowledge and contrast from which any reader could begin imagining how to build a better world here on Earth. Now, before you shrug this off, I'd like to make a bet that based on your answers to just three little questions, I'll be able to bring you on board. If I lose, you need read no further. If I win, you'll give this book a try. Deal?

Do you believe there's probably life on other planets? Of course you do. To imagine that Earth, among two to three trillion planets – in the Milky Way galaxy alone (as guesstimated by a few scientific geniuses; the number is not yet knowable) – is the only one with life, while it alone has many millions of species, is naïve (to be kind). Then consider there are 100 to 300 billion more galaxies. Meaning the universe may have 2 500 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 (2.5 trillion x 100 billion) planets. Statistically, if you could play your local six-number lottery one time for every planet in the universe, you'd win 178 571 430 000 000 000 times. (The chance of your winning such is 1 in 14 million.) Which is to say, hypothetically, if the chance of there being life on another planet is 1 in every 14 000 000 sampled

Do you believe that our minds are more powerful than presently understood? That we likely have latent conscious abilities that now escape use, such as extrasensory perception (telepathy, clairvoyance)?

abilities to a far greater degree than we have? You have to. I mean, if some can presumably fly spaceships here through technological feats that we can't even comprehend, naturally they'd be more advanced in other areas of creature development. To think that we are the most consciously sophisticated of all life-forms that exist upon 178 571 430 000 000 000 planets calls into serious question the intelligence of the life-form drawing such a conclusion – proving the likelihood of the point. On board? If so, you're actually ready to go where you've not likely gone before: considering the premise that there are extra-terrestrials who've already developed their conscious abilities to such a degree that they've discovered ways to astral project (Google it) to far-flung reaches in space, not only to find us (among others), but to initiate contact. Also that there are ETs eager to share word of their existence and lessons learned as a species and civilisation, solely wanting to be of service. You'd do the same if we were to find an attentive, eager-to-learn, primitive tribe in some unexplored jungle on Earth,

Channelling, in case you don't know, is the ability to slightly alter one's conscious focus to allow the spiritual energy of another, or that of your higher self, to physically communicate through you. taking dictation. The length of time I can sustain this will depend on how tired I am and my state of mind. Usually, after a few paragraphs, I will stop and do a quick edit for typos, misspellings, and word usage, but I will very rarely tweak the verbiage. In a live channelling session I once did, an audience member asked Frank if they could channel in languages other than English, and the answer was quite intriguing. They said that they communicated through frequency, and spirit aspect of our beings, we have been able to witness many historical events on your planet, and it is through the understanding of your planet's evolution that we have been motivated to step in and express our perspective on the direction that you are heading and what could be done to improve that trajectory.' When asked how Tracy could reach Frank at any time – I mean, what if they're sleeping, or in the shower, or mowing the yard when Tracy wants to chat? – Frank explained that like us, they are multidimensional beings, but for their fully developed conscious abilities, they're able to simultaneously lend fragments of their combined consciousness to Tracy, even as they tend to their lives back home. Here are some notes from Tracy on how she channels Frank: The method of channelling Frank can best be described as an intentional relaxation. It is best done during a quiet part of the day, when there can be minimal interruption and noise; many times this will be late at night, just before I go to sleep. I enter a state of relaxation with some deep breathing and, through my intentions, allow a space for Frank to come in. There is a sense that I 'step aside' to the left while Frank's energy enters through the right. It is a very gentle and subtle sensation when I am writing, but will be a stronger shift of energy when I channel verbally. In this relaxed state, I will read the question being posed and then close my eyes with my hands on the keyboard of my laptop. The words will come into my head as though they are being dictated to me, and I simply transcribe them as though I were

not through language, which means that the energetic frequency they are transmitting to me as the channel is being automatically interpreted by my brain into my native language, which happens to be English. If they were to work with a channel whose native language was other than English, that is how it would be transcribed. This also means that the interpretation will be limited to my own stored vocabulary and word usage; as such, when Frank uses the male pronoun he, for example, when speaking of Source or God, this is more of my translation from their frequency than a literal sense of this energy being referred to as male. Other words such as people or person, when referring to their own population, can also be seen as an interpretation of their word for a collection of beings, and not necessarily as referring to a collection of human beings. I urge you to take these new ideas one at a time – never accepting anything that doesn't resonate with your own logic and intuition – and, when ready, to be awed as your mind expands to never before known dimensions. Prepare to be subtly astounded. O * PUBLISHER'S NOTE: The universe is generally considered by astronomers and cosmologists to be 13.7 billion years old. 'Hello humans,   this is   Frank   speaking' Frank is not a person in the normal sense of the word but rather a name for a collective of advanced consciousness beings communicating with humankind from a far-off galaxy, says international author, teacher and speaker Mike Dooley. Frank is said to be benign in intention and rather more advanced than we humans. The latter point is not too hard to believe, if one concedes to the numerical inevitability of other conscious life-forms roughly equivalent to humans existing on other life-supporting planets in our galaxy and the many billions of other similar worlds that make up a component of the cosmos. This article is Frank's introduction of 'themselves', extracted from Dooley's latest book, written in collaboration with Tracy Farquhar, who has developed a link in consciousness with Frank and is the source of the material that makes up that book, entitled From Deep Space With Love.*

Transforming Consciousness for Social Change

All elements of consciousness – from awareness of Self and emotional/ psychological reflections to spiritual meditations – are rooted in energy relationships. To shift energy, we need to grasp its critical elements – from the physical energy which we obtain from food and exercise, to emotional energy from supportive relationships to spiritual energy from meditations and prayer. These elements are the foundational building blocks to shift consciousness. Transforming consciousness requires a (not surprisingly) conscious effort guided by specific teachings and involves setting an intention, effort and invoking grace to reduce the negative consequences of greed, anger, lust, ego/pride and selfishness to invoke love, kindness, acceptance, compassion and care. We take a closer look.

ow do we undertake this transformational journey? Every human being has the potential and capacity to change – however modern living

has created many obstacles and challenges on the path, limiting our human capacity to rise to its highest level. The fourth industrial revolution – combining rapidly-moving developments and convergence of the physical, digital and biological worlds – impacts on all disciplines, economies and industries, and even challenges our ideas about what it means to be human. Both human and artificial intelligence are converging to expand the potential for human consciousness far beyond our current understanding. All human consciousness exists at multiple levels: from the grossest basic level functioning in the primitive brain located around the parietal areas, where the 'flight or fight'

Photo frame for relationships Need to bring harmony to your relationships? Collect love gems such as Rose Quartz, Rhodonite, Rutile Quartz, Emerald, Topaz and Garnet. Place a photograph of you and your partner in a frame and include with it a piece of paper filled with positive affirmations and thoughts for you both. Attach the gems onto the frame with Prestik or glue and place it in the bedroom.

Manifesting goals with crystal grids Have you heard the saying, 'Where thought goes, energy flows'? Our minds are powerful and what we send out, we attract back. Crystal grids are an excellent tool for manifesting your desires, goals and intentions. The key is to focus on a specific aspect of your life and to select stones that are aligned with your intention in that area. Use the list below to guide your choice of crystals. Then create a personal or business grid by placing four stones (of mixed or single type) in the four main compass point directions – North, South, West and East. Add Black Tourmaline to the corners to anchor and protect and place Clear Quartz in the middle of your layout to promote clarity and unity. Abundance – good luck – wealth: Aventurine, Jade, Malachite, Green Tourmaline, Smokey Quartz, Apatite, Moonstone, Tiger’s Eye, Citrine, Garnet, Ruby, Carnelian, Moss Agate, Aventurine Angelic connection: Kunzite, Moldavite, Calcite (pink, blue), Clear Topaz, Chrysoprase, Apophyllite, Selenite, Celestite, Angelite, Aquamarine, Danburite Balance: ink or Green Tourmaline, Lepidolite, Calcite, Prehnite, Amethyst, Quartz, Fluorite, Tiger’s Eye Calming/relaxing: Aventurine, Amazonite, Lepidolite, Lapis, Petrified Wood, Smokey Quartz, Rose Quartz, Jasper, Moonstone, Blue Lace Agate, Onyx, Variscite Communication/expression:

Lotions: Rejuvenate the skin by placing a Rose Quartz into your face or body cream. Drinking water elixirs: Water has a memory. It records and stores information, thus blessing your water with crystal energy prior to drinking it can be an effective way to optimise body functioning. Popular choices include Rose Quartz for love and Clear Quartz for clarity. Place your cleansed, chosen stone in a drinking glass or water jug and fill with filtered water. Leave to stand for at least four hours in the early morning sun – this allows the water to become charged with colourful, vibrational energies and frequencies. Drink regularly throughout the day (use one stone type per jug). O

From crystal expert Judy Hall comes another fascinating book that gives you a personalised, practical and direct experience of the thought-provoking wisdom that crystal exploration has conveyed to thousands throughout the world. Going far beyond a reference guide, The Crystal Experience is more like a personal tutor, leading you through the key ideas and concepts of using crystals via inspirational and holistic hands-on exercises and rituals. A CD is included with features that include interactive exercises that help you to tailor the book to your needs, journaling sections for you to write down your own experiences and a step-by-step learning programme that guides you to revision work and more advanced exercises. Perfect for novice and practised crystal users alike, this holistic, integrated and practical guide is your own personal crystal workshop in a book.

Crystal Prescriptions volume 6 Judy Hall O-Books • 978 1 7853 5455 7 This practical sixth book in the Crystal Prescriptions series covers crystals for karmic clearing, soul integration and healing the family tree. In addition to our own karma, we are hampered by ancestral memories, attitudes and beliefs that are not necessarily ours. Fortunately, some extraordinary new crystals have appeared which help us to quickly and easily break lineages and clear our 'junk DNA', without having to relive the trauma of karmic history. With the assistance of these crystals, and some old favourites, it is possible to heal far back into the genealogical line and our own karmic past. The healing is then projected forward into the future so that generations to come can have the benefit of garnered soul and ancestral wisdom, but without the baggage.

ANCIENT LIFE TRAPPED IN GIANT CAVE CRYSTAL REVIVED Scientists working within Mexico's Naica Mine cave system have revived ancient microbes that have likely been trapped inside the massive crystals found there for 50 000 years, reports Phys.org. Naica Mine is an otherworldly place that is both so strikingly beautiful and hot that it's called Fairyland by some, and called Hell by others. It's perhaps best characterised by the enormous selenite crystals that grow within it, so large that they dwarf the human explorers who walk among them. And, it turns out, those crystals have been harbouring an ancient secret, vestibules for bizarre organisms that are so different from all known living things that scientists don't know what to make of them yet.

An Epic Journey   From   Past   To   Future

ODYSSEY 66 •

DIGIMAG

It was in July 1977, in a meeting in Tokai, Cape Town, that the idea for and impetus behind Odyssey Magazine began, inspired by the example of Findhorn in the UK and seeking to offer South Africans – then living in a very closed and narrow world – alternative ways to view themselves, community, society and human beings as a whole and at all levels. Maria Ascencao, one of SA's leading complementary and holistic health entrepreneurs, takes a look at Odyssey's odyssey over the 40 years of its existence and how this magazine's journey through changing times, rapidly moving technologies and the challenges they bring are paralleled in developments in 21st century health care.

I

t is amazing that Odyssey Magazine has existed for 40 years – very few titles are so long-lived, and there are especially few that have set out to cater to an

audience other than the core of the mainstream. That there has been and still is such a magazine in existence in South Africa is therefore extraordinary – and all the more so as it has gone through several 'incarnations', including dealing with the challenges of the information and digital ages which have swept us all up. When Odyssey started out, it was reaching a relatively

tiny audience of mostly like-minded people at a time when the mainstream perceptions in South Africa around anything 'alternative' were, in the least, highly suspicious and sceptical. And given that Odyssey, in its own quiet way, was decades out in front of most of the rest of the local media – indeed, of the international media, with one or two exceptions – it is almost surprising that it was not banned at some point in its journey through the darkest years of apartheid and political repression.

Odyssey has experienced several phases of being. First there was what can be called the 'launch era', from mid-1977 to about 1983 when Jill Iggeldon who launched the title from her home in Cape Town edited the magazine and did almost everything. With the help of a few loyal friends, the magazine was distributed to the then few health shops and esoteric bookshops in Cape Town and Johannesburg, in the main, and often hand-delivered. Slowly, the magazine drew a growing audience and established itself as a reliable source of information of then 'off the wall' alternative lifestyle options like vegetarianism and 'sensible nutritional', yoga, massage therapy and meditation. It was a useful resource for information-starved South Africans on a wide range of matters, from Buddhism (practice and theory) through Hinduism and other religions and spiritual philosophies to health matters, especially natural health, herbs and good eating habits, as well as earth-friendly ways of living. Through the 1980s and well into 1990s, Odyssey remained much as it always had been but grew in both content and audience under its second editor Rose de la Hunt. In early 2001 Rose suffered a cerebral accident and the reigns of editorial and management of the magazine passed into the hands of Chris and Silke Erasmus, who continue to publish and edit the magazine, respectively. But Chris and Silke have also been at the helm during

ODYSSEY 67 •

DIGIMAG

the greatest changes in how information is published and shared in human history – and they have been required, as with all of us, to keep pace with these rapid changes. Having established the magazine in a more mainstream look and feel, Chris and Silke saw it rise in circulation as the title became commonly found at most leading retail outlets during the first dozen years of the 21st century. At the same time, the way we were all doing business was rapidly shifting with increasing reliance on the internet and digital technologies to not only communicate but to create publications and, as of the beginning of 2013 in Odyssey's case, to go full time-into the digital zone. All this while, medical technology and only our understanding of how the human body works, not in general but increasingly in the specific with each person, was also rapidly evolving. As Odyssey has been required by the powerful tides of this time in history to shift in its method of operations – the digital jump taken in 2013 being the beginning of the title's latest iteration – so too have we all been, and

HOMEGROWN AMAZON We take water for granted far too often. Whole civilisations have fallen as a result of over-exploiting water sources, according to Royal College of Art graduate student Pratik Ghosh, so it’s imperative that we treat what we have with care. So Ghosh designed Drop by Drop, a plant-based water filtration system that explores more sustainable methods of obtaining water. The system is capable of cleansing home wastewater, and growing herbs at the same time. Drop by Drop filters water much like transpiration processes in the Amazon rainforest. According to Ghosh, his prototype is a mini biosphere that operates by keeping four factors crucial for transpiration – humidity, light, heat and wind – at optimal levels.

MORE THAN 35 COUNTRIES HAVE BANNED GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROPS FROM THEIR COUNTRY – here's why The global resistance against Genetically Modified crops (GMOs) is growing at an exponential rate. A few years ago, you were almost ridiculed for suggesting that GM foods could be a problem, and now scientists and researchers are presenting information that has 19 new countries joining an already long list of nations to completely ban, or have severe restrictions on, GMOs – as well as the pesticides that go with them. These countries will not allow genetically modified crops to be grown in their country. The opt-out countries are requesting that biotechnology companies exclude their territories from GMO seed sales, and some countries, according to RT news, are simply putting things to a halt until more research is conducted. So why are these countries doing this? Two of the main reasons have to do with environmental and health-related concerns. Alongside all of these troubles (according to Reuters), some countries simply want to take time to do proper research — flying in the face of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) decree that GMOs are completely safe. There are many who disagree with this assertion.

Desert Farm Grows Tons Of Food Without Soil, Pesticides, Fossil Fuels Or Even Groundwater Innovations that will one day make the human race thrive on Earth, saving its finite resources from extinction, are something we should embrace without a second thought. We get our food from plants and animals. As we grow in numbers, so too does the global demand for food. Currently, activists are fighting the spread of Genetically Modified Food (GMO). The argument for GMO proponents has been that the world is running out of its resources, and hence, we need to find ways and means to sustain us. According to them, GMOs will ensure that we maintain our food production level. This argument might sound convincing on first hearing, however, deeper probing of GMOs has revealed that the harm caused far outweighs the good it does. We, therefore, cannot accept GMOs. It will bring a plethora of health problems to the populations who consume them, in the long-term. We must find other alternatives to boost our food production. Thankfully, some innovators are coming up with sound and efficient ways by which we can grow our food – without relying on our finite resources. A start-up, called Sundrop Farms, has developed high technology greenhouse facilities that use a number of solutions to grow crops with less reliance on finite natural resources, than conventional greenhouse production. Sundrop Farms has offices in London in the United Kingdom, and Adelaide, in southern Australia. But with Sundrop Farms, these resources can be reinvented the other way around. In 2010, Sundrop Farms opened its first pilot facility in Port Augusta, South Australia. Located in the middle of a desert, it would have been impossible to grow food in the area using a tradition farming method. But Sundrop is changing the game. It is growing crops in the desert through the latest innovative means, combining seawater and sunlight. Sundrop treats the seawater from the Spencer Gulf, reusing it in a massive greenhouse lined with cardboard. By doing this, it avoided having to rely on groundwater for its operations. Sundrop also grows hydroponically, which reduces the overall need for water, while making the need for soil a moot point. Utilising a bevy of mirrors to redirect the desert sun, all the farm needs is sunlight and some seawater to grow 17 000 metric tons of food every year.

Foodstuff Tony Jackman Human & Rousseau • 978 0 7981 7289 9

The cookbook as memoir, or memoir as cookbook? With FoodStuff, maverick food writer Tony Jackman presents us with a refreshingly original take on life and food. He relates every heartache, every joy, and does not shy away from imparting the pain of loss of a family member or his troubled relationship with

his father. The stories of his journey towards adulthood are counterbalanced by rich tales from his life. FoodStuff has many meaty recipes, spicy poultry dishes, some of Jackman's eccentric signature dishes, and desserts he likes to spoil his friends with. Jackman, known in particular for his article Sliced & Diced in the Weekend Argus, invites you into his world, from humble beginnings in an English working-class family to an illustrious career as an unapologetically eccentric South African foodie, playwright and author. This book tosses together tales from a rich, nomadic life with masses of meaty recipes (Obies oxtail potjie, beef fillet with melted French Brie, parsley-crusted rack of lamb); spicy poultry dishes (tamarind duck curry, chicken coconut curry); a handful of signature dishes (spanspek soup, bacon-and-beer braai bread); and the desserts with which Jackman likes to spoil his friends (the chocolatiest chocolate tart ever, lemon syrup cake, pears in Chardonnay Pinot Noir with a Parmesan wafer).

Become the 'Observer of Reality' – it's more fun Observing reality requires that you understand that life is impartial. Life merely is. When you give it meaning (which inevitably translates to limitation), such as life is fair or unfair (polarised and still in judgement of what is) – you are placing a cap on the immeasurable. Manifesting reality in this way may still work to a certain degree but not nearly as efficiently as when you place no limitations on creation or how you're going to get from point A to point B. Instead, when you allow life to transpire in a state of love and joy (where you are operating in a higher vibration and in alignment with spirit), life will have no other choice but to unfold miraculously to your benefit in a way your ego self couldn't possibly have dreamt of. 'There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.' – Albert Einstein The Law of Attraction isn't something outside of ourselves, it is who we are – its primary principle works on energy and vibration. Whatever frequency you are transmitting is getting picked up by the Universe and you are magnetizing more of that to you. Trying to control the Law of Attraction is as futile as trying to control the beating of your heart – these are things that just happen naturally, with effortless ease (with a little help from 'intelligent design' or the mysterious Tao). Look about you, everything you have in your life right now is a product of the Law of Attraction whether you were trying to control it or not. We consciously, subconsciously and unconsciously create all the time through our energy emissions, which is regulated by our thoughts that affect our emotional output. We don't have to concentrate on our blood circulating or make sure our eyes blink every five seconds – they are ingrained functions of our body. The Law of Attraction is an integral part of our physical existence, as well as our soul's path, and following our bliss and synchronous markers are our unforced breadcrumbs to finding our way home – home, in this sense, being a metaphor for our place in the cosmic creation. Understanding that nothing and everything are one and the same brings balance and harmony in a seemingly discordant world. Allowing the great mystery to unravel on our journey is one of the most exciting aspects of existential life. O

PRESENT PARENT Let's face it, life with kids is challenging. Yet you see those moms who seem to breeze through it all, unflappable. They have an annoyingly effortless way of seeming cool, collected, kind, peaceful and in control – even when surrounded by chaos. Julie Kailus writes for the website GAIAM and offers these five tips making a calm mom look like child's play.

1

4theKids

5 WAYS TO BE A

FOCUS ON RIGHT NOW Turn off the cell phone and the radio when you're in the car and use that time to connect with your child.

2

GIVE KIDS SOME SPACE Look at how you might be 're-parenting' yourself, perhaps because of some shortcoming you perceive in the way your own mother parented you. Try creating physical space in your home, too. For example, clear off the kitchen table every night and make it a sacred place for mealtime.

3

SIMPLIFY Over-scheduling is a recipe for a short fuse. You don't need to do it all every day. Look at what you can 'undo' in your day. Look at the week's chores and decide: No vacuuming this week! 'I don't know anyone who's died from a messy house or spending the day in their pajamas.

4

NURTURE YOUR NON-MOM IDENTITY Ignore the voice in your head about what constitutes a perfect mother, and just be you. Make time to reconnect with what you loved to do BC (before children) and don't feel guilty about it.

5

BREATHE If 'take a deep breath' is something you try to remember to do when stress starts mounting, you're on the right track. Numerous studies have shown the benefits of proper breathing and employing specific breathing techniques. They range from lower blood pressure, increased lung capacity and a strengthened immune system to reduced stress and improved focus and concentration, to name a few. Babies should be our guide. At birth, children naturally breathe deeply from the belly rather than shallowly from the chest like most adults.

THE PUZZLE BOOK We all know that books are good for your child's brain but they're also a health booster. In fact, new research says reading daily can even lead to a longer life. We also know that puzzles are an excellent way to help build specific early childhood skill sets in kids, including physical skills, cognitive skills, and emotional skills. This five-page book called the Codex Silenda is an intriguing wonder that features thick wooden pages, each of which has an intricate puzzle attached to it. In order to read the book, readers must solve each page's puzzle before the next page will unlock.

Telepathy between a mother and her child is a strange phenomena that proved to be true in a couple of cases. But is it a proof of telepathy or a subtle body language that can be understood between the mother and her child? Five year old Ramses Sanguino has astonished his mother by displaying signs of telepathic abilities. But a mother can exaggerate her child’s abilities, so one scientist decided to test if what the mother claims is actually true. The child is a genius, no question about that. At just five he is already learning seven languages and solving complex mathematical equations, even tuckling algebra. See video, right, for more.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD The map that we have come to know was actually based on a cartographer’s projections from 1569. The AuthaGraph World Map (pictured, left) by Hajime Narukawa, recent Grand Award recipient of Japan’s Good Design Award, attempts to remedy some of the many inaccuracies in previous models. The result is a map that more correctly represents the distances between continents and displays the true size of countries and continents.

DANCE SOUTH AFRICA! Rudi Smit, an incredible dancer and choreographer from Cape Town created a video hoping Meghan Trainor would see it, and it has literally 'viralled' out of control – in a good way. The routine was crafted to Megan Trainor’s recent song 'Me Too' and features over 27 of South Africa’s most talented dancers that you might have not heard of before, but have to see. Smit was surprised that in less than four hours, the video had been viewed over 13 000 times. It now has over 950 000 views. Not bad for a crew from this corner of the world. See the video, right.

TEEN BUILDS Nuclear Fusion Reactor Taylor Wilson believes nuclear fusion is a solution to our future energy needs, and that kids can change the world. And he knows something about both of those: When he was 14, he built a working fusion reactor in his parents' garage. Now 17, he takes the TED stage to tell (the short version of) his story. See the video, left.

TEEN PHYSICIST'S NEW THEORY ON GOD Max Loughan is an inspiring young man with a big vision. 'As cheesy as this sounds, from day one on this planet, I knew I was put here for a reason. And that reason is to invent and to bring the future. My true goal is to help. It is to invent a future where people can be happy, where they can be safe and sound.' His eloquent theories on God, the universe, the Bible, and physics, are sure to touch your heart and mind. See the video, right.

MINI MONET While most 14-year-old artists are content to have their work exhibited in the hallway at school or adorn the family's walls, a British teen, who has been dubbed 'mini Monet' sells out professional shows within minutes and is reportedly worth R35m. Kieron Williamson has been inspired by nature since a very early age, and at the age of six, he began sketching boats during a family holiday to Cornwall, England.

Lies we Believe About God Wm Paul Young Simon & Schuster • 978 1 4711 5239 9

As a 'conventional' Christian, this author writes from within the mainstream, but manages at the same time to challenge many widely held but poorly thought through assumptions dealing with religion and, in the case of this book, God in particular. Using, primarily, Scripture as his basis of argument, the author encourages one to think through belief not previous fully penetrated – and to see that some of what many Christians take to be 'self-evident' about their belief is not necessarily so, or even, not true at all. He discusses ideas such as: 'God is disappointed in me', 'God created (my) religion', 'God loves us, but doesn't like us', 'God is not involved in my suffering,' and 'God is One alone'. This is one probably for the 'beginning seeker' who has finally found the courage to think outside of conventionality's box – and who may be rather surprised by what they find there.

Radical HOPE: Letters Of Love & Dissent In Dangerous Times Edited: Carolina de Robertis Virago • 978 0 3490 1010 6

This book was written in the immediate wake of the election of Donald Trump as US President. This book of letters from a wide range of people, some known many not, come together as a sort of 'vox populi' of collective angst at the prospect, then potential but now realised, of an increase in hate crimes across America, driven by the vitriol and un-evolved consciousness of its new 'leader'. Let South Africans and those living in other democratic nations take note – look at what you get as a so-called 'leader' if you play to your lowest instincts instead of your highest aspirations.

Norse Mythology Neil Gaiman Bloomsbury • 978 1 4088 8680 0

For the Norse, before 'the beginning' there was nothing – no Earth, no heavens, no stars, no

sky; only the mist world, formless and shapeless, and the fire world, always burning. From these roots spring the rich and seething world of Norse mythology. Norse myths have invaded and woven themselves into our culture and the fabric of our storytelling to the point that we may not even be aware of their influence. From Tolkien to comic superheroes, we can trace the Norse influence. In this retelling of that ancient body of mythology, the author recaptures the sense and essence of their time, tales of dwarves and frost giants (think Game of Thrones), of treasures and magic and of Asgard, home of the Gods. If you've ever had an interest in mythology and in particular the especially colourful mythology of the Norse men, or Vikings, then this is a great read.

No is Not Enough: Defeating the New Shock Politics Naomi Klein Allen Lane • 978 0 2413 2088 4

Well known social and political commentator, Klein takes on the new world order of shock-

jock tactics in high office – as applicable in South African terms as it is in British, American or in a number of other countries. But rather than us all pulling back into our shells, Klein deconstructs what's going on – scary as it is, it offers opportunity to turn around the apparent lurch towards the lunatic right – and shows us how to fight back, and effectively so. In many respects, this is a 'call to arms' (the kind that link together, not the kind that shoot bullets) which a growing number of people across the world realise is their one great strength against the powerful elites who would otherwise run roughshod over our collective rights and lives. A mustread.

We: A Manifesto for Women Everywhere Gillian Anderson & Jennifer Nadel Thorsons • 978 0 0081 6640 3

These authors – Anderson perhaps known to some from The X Files – have proposed an imagined sisterhood across all creeds and cultures; an unspoken agreement that, as women, they

will support and encourage one another. They offer a road map on how to live more meaningful lives and how women can come together for their mutual support and assistance. They offer nine principles as a way of achieving their ideal. If you are interested in women's rights and the issues raised in this book, this may prove a major coalescent point on your journey.

Where The Universe Came From New Scientist / John Murray Learning 978 1 4736 2959 2

It is hard to believe that it's just over a century ago that a young, previously unknown scientist, Albert Einstein, came up with his general theory of relativity, utterly thereby transforming our way of seeing reality. We don't even think about space and time in the same way – or, at least those familiar with his theory don't. This book is designed to be accessible to those with a 'reasonable' education, without requiring advanced studies in physics. In other words, it's both

a primer and a general overview of the Cosmos's 13.8 billion year journey to where we find it today, using Einstein's insights (among others). Really good for getting your head around concepts which may, previously, have seemed exceptionally obscure, weird or difficult to grasp.

Though this book is fiction – something we rarely review – we have determined to place it on our pages simply because of the relevance of what it reveals about one of the world's most reclusive, authoritarian, irrational and unstable regimes. Though 'fiction' the book is based on real circumstances and events and is arguably all the more important and timely now that America has an almost equally unstable and irrational leader who is proving to be as bellicose and belligerent as North Korea's.

South Africa has been considering shale gas development in the Karoo – an arid part of the country that spans more than 400 000 square kilometres – to add to its energy mix. The possibility of 'fracking' in the region has provoked heated debate. The Conversation Africa's Ozayr Patel asked Robert Scholes and Greg Schreiner to unpack the issues.

If rights are granted, exploration activities could start within the next 3-5 years, conditional on the results of site-specific environmental impact assessments. If it's found that gas from deep shale layers can be liberated at commercially viable flow rates, the Karoo could be the location of a domestic gas industry within the next 20 years, lasting for several decades. The public and the regulators have had lots of questions about the potential development of shale gas in the Karoo. The scientific assessment assembled a team of over 140 experts to evaluate these questions, clustered under 17 broad issues raised by the stakeholders. HONOURING

ARBOUR Trees play a vital role in rural and urban populations. They are needed to enrich and anchor soil, to maximise water supplies, to beautify and humanise townships and urban areas and to provide shade and shelter. They are also crucial for biodiversity conservation. Every year in September, schools, organisations and businesses participate in community 'greening' events to improve the health and beauty of the local environment and develop a green future for South Africa. Events are held around the country highlighting the benefits of planting and conserving trees to offset carbon emissions and for greening to improve the quality of life and uplift the environment, and communities. We take a look at a few innovations in honour of Arbour Day 2017.

PARK OF MUSIC Plenty of cities feature live music in their parks during the summer months – indeed it's one of the many joys of the long, warm days of the season. But in a park in Denmark, one can hear music year-round and on-demand. No, not on a stage or in a bandstand, but among the trees. It's all part of the city of Aalborg's public art project, where trees in the Park of Music host tunes from musicians who have performed at the nearby cultural center. It all started in the 1980s when the city asked visiting musicians to plant a tree as a memorial of their performance.

The Great America In America, everything seems to be 'great' – everything is bigger, better and faster. It’s no wonder that they are calling this the 'great' eclipse. Margarita Celeste writes this with tongue firmly in cheek.

E

clipses, by nature, are dark and ominous events. Many thousands of years ago, early humans watched the light of the Sun or the Moon get

swallowed up, and were overcome that light had fled from the world entirely – until they got smart and realised that the light always came back, and that over time, these eclipses seemed to repeat themselves. However, in Astrology, we really are studying light – the light of awareness, the light of consciousness descending upon us from the Creator, the light to banish the shadows of ignorance. In astrological terms, the Creator does this via the planets, filtering divine light to us through each one, bestowing us with awareness. And so, of course, when the light of these planets vanishes, so too does the symbolism of light, and in the dark, we imagine terrors, the monster under the bed. Throughout history, eclipses have been proven to

disappearing of light. Temperatures drop a good number of degrees during an eclipse, and many agree there is a general feeling of anxiety and queasiness during this time. There are two types of eclipses – a Lunar, and a Solar eclipse. The Solar Eclipse is a supercharged New Moon, when the Sun and Moon are together in a holy marriage, and a Lunar Eclipse is a super-charged Full Moon. Eclipses occur in 'seasons', with a Solar and Lunar Eclipse following a few weeks after each other. In astronomical terms, a Solar Eclipse happens when the sun is briefly onscured by the Moon which is passing between the Earth and the Sun. A Lunar Eclipse happens when the Earth blocks light from the sun, causing a dark shadow across part of all of the moon. In terms of being coined 'cycles of consciousness', these eclipses tend to wake up old, usually difficult patterns in our lives, which bring us to a crisis point, a turning point some may say, and usually decisions made over this time carry a large price tag. They have consequences, in other words – big ones. People feel very angsty over an eclipse season, particularly if the eclipse aspects a personal planet or point in their birth charts. If this is so, the eclipse heralds enormous changes, something to be snatched away from their lives, and it is almost never easy. Solar Eclipses tend to herald new, external beginnings,

even achievements, and Lunar Eclipses tend to herald internal crisis and turning points. There is certainly a shift in consciousness, and a potential awakening for humanity, for the individual. Or at least, an opportunity to do so. Eclipses are like opening the gates of consciousness, and we can certainly shift our collective visions. We can plant seeds for future changes,

This particular cycle’s flavour is said to be about 'personal relationships, hasty decisions based on false information, health problems'. This series occurred in 1909, 1927, 1945, 1963, 1981, and 1999. What happened in those years? Well, in 1909, American President William Taft was assassinated. In 1927, the famous 'Pineapple Primary' elections happened in America, a campaign marked by numerous acts of violence when Al Capone’s mobsters ruled the roost. There were also many huge natural and manmade disasters over that time – tornadoes, floods, gas explosions, and hurricanes. In 1945, Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs were dropped. In 1963, JFK was assassinated. In 1981, Reagan was almost assassinated. And in 1998/99, Bill Clinton was impeached. In addition, this will be the first time since 1918 – the start of WWI – that an eclipse is so visible in the USA. One has to wonder, then, if eclipses are so ominous, what kind of effect it will have on millions of Americans? Will the eclipse herald a time or a shift in consciousness, perhaps so sorely needed? Or will it bring about violence, as

We all have a wellspring of talents, abilities and strength waiting to be uncovered, but we often suppress our potential because we lack confidence. To a large extent we create the world we live in. Our minds enter another frequency, become more receptive to the invisible world. I know many people that are stuck on certain traditions and always have paper and a pencil next to the phone. They're always mindlessly scribbling things down while they talk to someone. When they hang up, the scribbles are generally symbols of the Tradition of the Moon, the most classic of them all, which uses the traditional paths to achieve knowledge. When we begin the path, we always have an idea of where we are supposed to meet. The women usually bring the Other Part, the love that they should find on earth, while the men look for the Power. Neither one of them want to learn, they want to get to that which accomplishes their goal. But the path of magic, as is generally the path of life, is the path of Mystery. To learn something means to enter into contact with the world, about which we have no idea about. It is necessary to be humble in order to learn. Pay attention to the eyes of the people that talk on the
